But does that mean the stress tests themselves are one big confidence game? Perhaps. The playwright David Mamet said such scams get their name not from the confidence the victim places in the con man, but the trust the con man pretends to place in the victim to elicit trust in return. By that standard, Geithner may be the most effective con man around, for better and for worse.

Good morning, pups. It’s Collins and Herbert this morning. Gail Collins gives us a primer on “The Care and Feeding of Arlen.” She says Arlen Specter’s theory was that his propensity to do whatever he wanted should not only be tolerated, but rewarded. Mr. Herbert, in “Far From Over,” says joblessness is like a cancer in the society. The last thing in the world that you want is for it to metastasize. And that’s what’s happening now.

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got French toast made with challah and cinnamon, with Vermont maple syrup. I’m heading out to the garden to pick lettuce. It’s supposed to get fairly hot this afternoon and I want to get it in before it gets wilted from the heat and/or bolts and gets bitter. Have a great day.

This is pretty gloomy…

Actual U.S. Unemployment: 15.8%

This morning’s news that U.S. unemployment has hit 13.7 million, pushing the rate to 8.9 percent, tells only half the story of this recession.

The total number of Americans who are not working full-time but ought to be is actually about 22 million, or 15.8 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Going and listening to the legislators debating the matter has been good, it’s kept me involved in politics since the campaign. It doesn’t hurt that my state rep and senator both recognize by sight. I’m the guy either embroidering, or making needle-lace.

CT, Thanks for the find. I’d love to see DADT nuked.

I’ve been thrilled with my own State Legislature, and have sent a letter, and a phone call, to my Governor, urging him to sign the Same Sex marriage equality thingie into law. (thingie is an obscure parliamentary term, dating to the early 14th century. Really.) (that’s here in NH)

Before his inauguration, President Obama called himself a “fierce advocate of equality for gay and lesbian Americans.” Now, with the same-sex marriage issue percolating in state after state and with the Pentagon’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy ripe for repeal, it’s time for Obama to put some of his political capital where his rhetoric is.
