And another little piece of Carrie Prejean dies.
Maine’s Gov. John Baldacci signed a bill into law allowing same-sex marriage in his state. Maine becomes the fifth state to do so. The other four: Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts and Vermont.
"In the past, I opposed gay marriage while supporting the idea of civil unions," Baldacci said in a statement. "I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage."
Baldacci added, "Adam and Steve, bitchez!!!"

Oh noes. Damned equality. Just keeps poppin’ up all over the place. Worse than dandelions.
Is that vast numbers of sexually repressed bigotheads exploding I hear?
Maybe there is a critical mass for this reform now? Let’s hope so.
I can’t wait to see David Vitter’s head blow off when this becomes the law of the land. He is such a wanker. He said that a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage was the most important issue facing our country.
Whoa, a hat trick. Head, blow and wanker on one line. *g*
Congratulations to one & all!
Remember the Maine!
Critical mass is when over one third of states have this equality. Then then can never be a Federal constitutional amendment.
Hurrah for Maine!
Crazy yankees!
Josh thinks that Maine is the only state so far that legalized gay marriage with no involvement of the courts at any point in the process.
Left you a belated reply in the previous thread.
Skeletor has started whining about how the Dems are treating him. I knew this switch had a lot of laugh potential.
Pardon this bit of diary whoring, but the New Hampshire House of Representatives is voting this afternoon on a slightly amended version of their Marriage Equality bill.
Assuming it passes, folks need to contact their friends and families in NH and ask them to tell Governor Lynch he should follow the example set by his fellow governor from Maine and sign the bill.
(and ask him to sign the Medical Marijuana bill as an added bonus)
I don’t think we’re anywhere near the tipping point yet but it seems to be gaining momentum in the East, at least. Some of the Southern and Western states will never reform until or unless they are forced to by SCOTUS. Might be quite awhile and several more appointments before that happens.
Life is gettin’ so bright I gotta wear shades.
Yes, another good example.
Tell him not to let the door hit him in the ass if the GOP will take him back…
I’m really beginning to wonder if Arlen is having some sort of problem – like forgetting who and what he is….seriously. This whole thing has been very strange to me.
Well, without seniority he’ll have a hard time making the case that he should be relected from PA. Heh. Some cliche about sowing & reaping.
Pretty simple really. The switch was a shameless, self-serving ploy. Think Lieberman…
There’s a breaking headline at rawstory with no story attached yet that Blackwater is accused of smuggling arms. Who could have anticipated …
About time Maine came around! even though they have repuk senators most people in Maine are independent types and figure what their neighbor does is their own business and the state should STFU about what goes on in the privacy of their own homes. But good on Maine!!
The best part is that Hapless Harry promised him seniority and then the caucus voted to strip it. Who would have guessed that it would take Scrapple to get the rest of the D’s to stand up to Harry? In my opinion, this is the best thing to come out of the whole mess.
Remember Teh Maine!
and ratfood @ 16
Specter is out for himself, as usual. He apparently thought Lightbrain Harry made the same deal he made with Short Ride. Zzzzzzzzt. Not. So, yeah, what’s he gonna do now? Switch back? Riiiiiight. This is gonna be a soap opera worth watching. An’ it’s free. The DSCC is really gonna come out of this looking the fools they are. We gotta find somebody who can beat him in the primary. Got to.
Yep. This could be a very good outcome. Maybe we’ll get Sestak as senator & replace him with someone who’s also good. I know, I’m getting ahead of myself, but I’ve been so discouraged that I want to reach for whatever scraps of good news there are. (Notice I didn’t say hope.)
And to Hell with Spain! (I hadn’t known that was the other half of the phrase until I check Wiki. Still topical with the New Spanish Inquisition, dontcha know?)
I want to read a story about Blackwater’s kickback payments.
It certainly was self-serving but he seems very confused by the entire thing – almost as if he really doesn’t understand what he did.
Hey, doesn’t Spain also have gay marriage, and aren’t they the only hope for justice for torture?
Speaking of arms smuggling. Grant F Smith of the Institute for Research, Middle East Policy offered a free copy of his book America’s Defense Line to Firepups a month or so ago. Naturally I took up the offer. There’s a section in it talking about the forerunner of AIPAC laundering money for arms being smuggled to Israel in the 40s. Book is a pre-history of AIPAC and a really interesting read. I used B&N’s site cuz they give more info on books than Amazon.
That story is protected by the powers-that-be. A story on arms smuggling would be less so. rawstory is introducing a new format; it keeps going down, and when I just brought it back up, the headline has disappeared. So maybe not.
You might be right about him not really understanding what he’s doing.
Back to the cesspool.
Namaste
It arrived in my mailbox last week! Goes into the hopper for books to read.
Thanks for that info. Best and most entertaining news I’ve heard all day. D or R, Specter sucks.
OT, hmmm, this is an interesting move..
‘A diplomatic row broke out today between the US and Israel after Washington’s chief nuclear arms negotiator called on Israel to sign the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT), breaking a US tradition of discretion over Israel’s nuclear arsenal.
Israeli officials said they were puzzled by a speech to an international conference in New York by Rose Gottemoeller, an assistant secretary of state, who said: “Universal adherence to the NPT itself – including by India, Israel, Pakistan and North Korea – also remains a fundamental objective of the United States.”‘

Gay marriage means equal rights for all. There is no good reason why gay couples should not be allowed by the government to be as happy as the rest of American society.
Nice. Thanks for the link.
You assume facts not in evidence. I see no evidence that Specter has ever known who and what he is.
Native Mainer, born and raised, and I’ve never been prouder of my state. Have donated to Equality Maine to fight the inevitable fundie pushback.
Good for them Maine and congrats you folks!
You forgot to include Eva and Eve?
Arlen will probably explain later today that it will mean Fido and Eve, or Steve, he won’t be sure.
Rick Warren will come out of the closet and confirm Arlen’s speculation.
the swami has thus spoketh. (the swami always lies)

Yes to both!
Maine has been a pretty well governed state for the 30 some years I have lived there. Even our Senators, if not the best, are sensible women and the best Republicans on show anywhere.
Ahh pwnage – good times.
I’d like to think this was a triumph for demotic, north country libertarianism, of the “I don’t care what you do, so long as you don’t do it in public and scare the horses” variety that makes ‘government meddling’ — whether it’s land-use regulation, zoning, conservation, taxes — or overt attempts to legislate individual behavior — a red flag.
We’ll know better in the fall. There’s still a likely ‘people’s veto’ referendum to deal with. If it shares an off-year ballot with the ‘Taxpayers’ Bill of Rights’ I would expect it to pass. The anti-tax zealot vote and the bigot vote have a healthy overlap.
Baldacci is the first Governor to actually sign a same sex marriage bill into law. I can’t stand Baldacci, but this is the first thing he’s done that is fantastic! Way to go Maine! ;-)
