About Firedoglake
Mornin’, pups!
I like the line in the NBC listing:
They’re not even pretending to be balanced! Also I thought Joe Scarborough wasn’t a Puke. Remember when he went ballistic on Pimpster for referring to the Puke party as Joe’s party?
Morning Elliott & RF Looks like I better find something besides TV this AM. Maybe Fareed Zacharia. The yard is in desparate need of work but yesterday was rain and drizzle and today is supposed to be the same. This is after two consecutive weekends of snow.
P.S. Elliott that is a cute video
It walks like a duck, quacks like a duck…

Jeebus, you have been busy!
I quit watching teh Boob Tube, I am already certifiable as it is.
XO,
Busted
Good morning. I think I got over 10 hours sleep last night and I still can’t get my act together. Yawn. All that tree planting must have worn me out. Bad day for TV (Mourning Jack Kemp on cspan, yuck), and rain (which I need for my newly planted trees) seems to be holding off, so I’ll find something else to do outside. Might be a good day for a bicycle ride.
I was hoping that the swine flu would drive down the price of pork, ham and bacon. *G*
Cute video! I wish dating was that easy. ;-)
Man! Where would the talk show hosts be without a confirmed head of HHS?!?
And to think, my man Tommy Thompson once held this post. Scary.
Heh. Reminds me that I have a bit of bacon left in my refrigerator. Might be a good morning for bacon & eggs.
I need some of your rain. They say tonight or tomorrow.
Good Morning
It sure is a lazy one.
Raining here.
Good morning Elliot! Sunny but cool here today.
eCAHNomics, I’ve been tired myself lately. Yesterday I watched ‘King Kong’ (great movie! I balled my eyes out at the end) with my son and then fell asleep sitting up for 2 hours. LOL!
Never underestimate sleep as an enjoyable activity!
oh yes, a huge sigh of relief as the flu story was breaking – recalling Thompson had his very own Brownie in charge of pandemic readiness
Mornin’ All
What a stellar line up of the beltway bobbleheads. Looks like there is no reason to put off the yard work. Cutting back the native grasses, pulling some weeds and removing some privet for tomatoes now under lights.
Just finished chowing down on a big slice of most excellent country ham and some scrambled eggs. Go for it, grrrrrl! *G*
It sure is sometimes!
Just cooked my bacon & eggs and am enjoying it. Like the smell in the house too.
I was hoping it would drive down the cost of a vacation in Cancun.
(yes, I know that’s a shameful reaction)
Read somewhere yesterday that reservations in Cancun are down 45% from normal at this time of year. So maybe . . . .
I wish someone would ask Sebelius to explain her department’s list of likely domestic extremists in the US. Here is one from the list (a 12 page PDF) that will surprise you.

I went to the website of one of the resort chains. I’m looking at an early December vacation. Their resorts in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica show no vacancies for that week. Cancun still available. So, I’m keeping an eye on it.
Like Amy Goodman? I wouldn’t be a bit surprised.
Good Morning Elliot and Pups.
Ellie, you spoil us so! Thank you for all the work of gathering all this info together so we can make the most of our tv time. I still haven’t gotten over “the old days” when I kept finding out who was on the telly just after they finished whatever they’d come to say.
Napolitano, Sebelius, and Sherrod Brown’s better half Connie Schultz. Hmmm. I pestered Sherrod a bit more yestidie. Mebbe Connie can address the feelings of her normally garrulous hubby. Why WON’T he take a public stand on the Dawn Johnsen nomination?! Humph.
Meanwhile, spring IS here. We had another beautiful melodious Swainson’s Thrush or several travel through our yard and woods yesterday, catching a quick snack and practicing their scales. Song sounds positively ethereal.
And two gorgeous male Rose-breasted Grosbeaks have arrived from their winter digs in Central America. Soon the ladies will join them here for the summer. The males have already started chortling and practicing up for the big audition. Our yard is a symphony. It’s hard to stay cranky when spring breaks forth.
Mebbe I’ll leave the porch door open while I multitask at the shredder and put my extra ear on the telly.
Peace, everyone. Enjoy your Sunday.
(((((Katymine))))) Anyone heard any more news about our dear gal?
Connie Schultz is up on CSPAN now.
Couldn’t stomach Ed Gillespie
I am a lot more likely to buy a lb. bacon than I am to go on a vacation to Cancun or back to Isle de Mujeres
oops, THANKS!
Off to the outdoors. Fortified with bacon & eggs. Yum.
Wow! People who plan ahead. Way ahead. I’m impressed. Seriously. I hope you score a good deal. Meanwhile, the press presses forward with trickinosis (spelling intentional). Ya know, they really ought to build a wall all the way across the southern U.S. Mebbe use Social Security funds for that? /s
Connie Schultz aka Mrs Sen Sherrod Brown.
Ed Gillespie said Obama is now responsible but Shrub wasn’t after 9 mos. and that Sean Innanity represents serious thought.
Had to get rid of those expired or nearly expired doses somehow.
**********************
” Source: Congressional Budget Office based on Robinson (2008).
Note: H5N1 is the virus that causes the “bird flu.” A clade is a group of viruses descended from a single ancestor. One dose contains 90 micrograms of antigen. (A microgram is one one‑millionth of a gram; antigen is the vaccine’s acitve ingredient). Influenza vaccine typically expires after two years; 15 million doses have expired or will expire soon.
At two doses per course (the recommendation for pandemic-influenza vaccine), the stockpile would hold enough to inoculate about 13 million people. Because there already are standards for how long seasonal-influenza vaccines can be stored, HHS has begun studies to determine how long the stockpiled prepandemic vaccines can be counted on to be safe and effective. Currently, HHS assumes a two-year shelf life, which is consistent with industry data for the shelf life of seasonal-influenza vaccine. About 15 million of the 26 million doses in the stockpile have already expired or are now reaching expiration, so the approximately 11 million doses left in the stockpile would be enough to inoculate only about 5.6 million people. “

Can’t remember whether I shared this before. MPR posted a parody re H1N1 Warning: purposely politically incorrect to prove a point, pups.
Morning pups, from Paris.
I don’t know if anyone else remembers seeing her dance, but Ekaterina Maximova died this week. She could bring tears to your eyes just standing still.
Bonjour, mon ami. Que faites-vous à Paris?
If the last admin hadn’t been so deliberately ignorant about science, they would have been periodically replacing the stock of those general purpose influenza vaccines. That way they’d still have enough on hand at any one time. As it is, it’s still going to take a solid six months to make one with the strain that the media played up way too much. I’d love to throttle whoever decided to run with this and made all the rest of the talking heads go crazy with it. It drives those of us working behind the counter in the pharmacy batty. Much less the details on the two anti virals that have to be taken in a certain time period to be effective.
So far, it isn’t bad in most places outside of Mexico. At this point, i’m going to be keeping an eye out during the fall when it can resurface during the usual cold/flu season. Along with my usual cynical eye towards the traditional media.
oh my, hadn’t seen that she had passed. was transfixed to see her dance in SF early 80’s.
clips from Don Quixote
Actually, I think BushCo was probably pretty good at preparing for a flu pandemic. Any problem where someone could make money was a priority.
You made my day! Still laughing out loud.
That session with Connie Schultz on Washington Journal was one of the best I’ve ever seen! I agree with the viewer who said she is now on his/her list of “fav” columnists….another bookmark here.
To a point yes, but ignoring the fact that well over half the stock is expired? That just doesn’t fly in typical storage of medications and even with us pharmacies that do immunizations. The minute it expires? It’s off the shelf ASAP to be properly disposed of and another batch ordered. That’s just basic rotation of stock. If it was needed, having the entire cache capable of being used makes more money than just being able to use half.
On that note, i’ve got to run as i’ve work to do!
Ja Matte Ne! (See you later!)
I had seen her interviewed several times on one of the MSNBC shows,
during the campaign, and really liked her. I had no idea she was married to Sherrod Brown. I’m sorry I missed her this morning.
People should just stop worrying. Roche refuses to increase production until a pandemic is declared. After it is, it will take 9 months to hit full production. Full production stops at 400 million. So, the odds of getting the anti viral is not too good, is it? There are much better things to do with our lives than spend them worrying about dying. What I worry about the current mini panic courtesy of MSM and WHO is that we are going to create immunity to the anti viral by giving it when not necessary and the wrong way. Correct me if I am wrong, but all that I have read says that they are to be used within 48 hours of symptoms..not before like a vitamin?
I. can. not. imagine what levels of hell all of you behind the front lines of the health profession have been enduring recently. Thank you for fighting the good fight! The so-called “framing” insanity of the media has been driving me totally bonkers and it only highlights their worthlessness in educating the public……a forkin’ pox on the houses of all the freak-out pundits!
Ah! The smell of good sturdy greasy fare of a Sunday morn! *g*
Go thou and conquer, mighty tree-planter!
What should happen and what does are not always the same thing. Bayer did this and it was settled quietly.
*************
” [Video] Bayer Sells AIDS-Infected Drug Banned in U.S. in Europe, Asia – Unearthed documents show that the drug company Bayer sold millions of dollars worth of an injectable blood-clotting medicine — Factor VIII concentrate, intended for hemophiliacs — to Asian, Latin American, and some European countries in the mid-1980s, although they knew that it was tainted with AIDS. Bayer knew about the fact that the drug was tainted and told the FDA to keep things under wraps while they made a profit off of a drug that infected its patients. If these allegations are true, then both Bayer and the FDA are at fault for this catastrophe. FDA regulators helped to keep the continued sales hidden, asking the company that the problem be ”quietly solved without alerting the Congress, the medical community and the public,” according to the minutes of a 1985 meeting “

I found myself rescuing an errant Mourning Dove (hit the window) right at the wrong time and missed her also. I’ll bet we can catch a repeat. I do believe CNN holds the record these days for repeating their yadda yadda yadda all bloomin’ Sunday ad nauseum. In fact I’m counting on it.
Schultz used be a very popular columnist in the Cleveland Plain Dealer. I sort of thot she gave that up when she married Sherrod, but I’m not sure. I’m not too familiar with her writing personally, since we don’t read the PD much, but it might have been awkward to keep it up and help him campaign, which she has done recently.
Now I’m getting THAT look from spouse for babbling with you guys instead of puffing up and down basement steps with him doing important stuff.
Happy Sunday all. I’m gone, sigh. *poof*
Just one more important thing 1st. Meadowlarks and Wood Thrushes arrived today. Yayyyyyyy! *picks up baton*
Baxter shipped out live bird flu virus to other countries in February 2009. This information only appeared in Canada, not the US. Baxter almost started a pandemic. They have just been given a contract by WHO to develop a vaccine for a swine flu vaccine. WTF? They should be up on charges for what they almost created; not rewarded.
**************
” The contaminated product, which Baxter calls “experimental virus material,” was made at the Orth-Donau research facility. Baxter makes its flu vaccine — including a human H5N1 vaccine for which a licence is expected shortly — at a facility in the Czech Republic.
People familiar with biosecurity rules are dismayed by evidence that human H3N2 and avian H5N1 viruses somehow co-mingled in the Orth-Donau facility. That is a dangerous practice that should not be allowed to happen, a number of experts insisted.
Accidental release of a mixture of live H5N1 and H3N2 viruses could have resulted in dire consequences.
While H5N1 doesn’t easily infect people, H3N2 viruses do. If someone exposed to a mixture of the two had been simultaneously infected with both strains, he or she could have served as an incubator for a hybrid virus able to transmit easily to and among people.
That mixing process, called reassortment, is one of two ways pandemic viruses are created. “

That rings true to my experience. I retired from working in a glass building, with an enclave. When I used to smoke, I would frequently find wounded or dead mourning doves who had flown into the glass. It appeared, like Obama’s description of the economy, they required quite a turn radius to avoid hitting the glass. The smaller sparrows and wrens could change direction at the last instant, and at least hit with less force. Anyway, have a nice day, all.
David Gregory is unwatchable
And if you’re gonna line up people to talk about the flu, make it Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, Rear Admiral Anne Schuchat, and Laurie Garrett. At least they know what they are talking about.
Mourning Doves are the jet fighters of the bird world. Sparrows = more like a Cessna putt putt. Dove might be a newbie scared up suddenly by our friendly neighborhood Cooper’s Hawk, latter of which luvs him some dove as much as eCAHN loves her bacon ‘n eggs. Doves and sparrows around here need every ounce of gitup ‘n go they can muster, either that or a sharp eye. The locals usually are very hard for the hawk to surprise. Newbies not so much.
Don’t get me started on the horrors of tall glass buildings. The carnage during migration season is appalling. The reflective walls fool low-flying night migrants. very sad to this ornithologist. *sniffle*
amen. eeeeewwwww. How can such an idiotic grown man be so thoroughly enamored by his own “cute factor”. It’s obscene.
Good morning, very late to thread, what a lazy day.
Did the city have nesting Peregrine Falcons perchance? If I were a dove, I’d fly into a glass building full force also if one a those were on my tail. In fact the falcons have sometimes met untimely ends the same way. Imagine yourself pulling up out of a 200mph+ dive at a window, protected by an armored suit of feathers.
Hi MM. Good day to sit in the sun? Ours is breaking pretty, and full of singing birds. Bummer. I gotta work inside. So I sneak over to pass notes back and forth and hope teacher doesn’t notice. My bad. *g*
Hi Aide, no its raining here so no sitting in the sun, perhaps a walk in the rain though.
I love spring rain, even when it’s cold. Don a poncho and splash away like a kid. We had our rain yesterday, and I do believe it saved my hash. The day before, I’d split up a whole bunch of bee balm and purple coneflower plants I’d sunk into the veg. garden to divide and multiply (cheap trick to frustrate the nursery grower down the road, heh). They did indeed. and were duly set out to bloom for the flutterbyes and hummers later in the summer. The nice rain kept them so perky you can’t even tell they were just moved.
Hate to gab and run, but I must. Catch ya later… The dreaded paper shredder calls. Today’s special is old grading records from the teacher in the family. Eww. The stories they could tell!
With her horrid experience at the Republican convention, she’d be first in line to discuss this. It was dated March 26, 2009, so maybe she doesn’t know yet. Send her an e-mail, maybe?
