Deutsche Press reported yesterday that:
Israeli forces on Saturday opened fire at Palestinian farmers near the security fence in south-east Gaza Strip … The farmers were working their land in the Faraheen area in the east of Khan Younis city in the southern Gaza Strip when they came under machine gun fire from the Israeli army posts on the border, the witnesses said.
While no casualties were reported, the attack coincided with an Israeli incursion of Gaza:
… three Israeli bulldozers, backed by two tanks, rolled for a few hundreds of meters into Beit Lahiya town, an agricultural community in the northern Gaza Strip. Residents said the bulldozers leveled some groves and withdrew later in the morning.
These attacks are all too reminiscent of events back in November–small scale Israeli attacks designed to provoke reactions from Gazan militant groups creating a justification for wider Israeli attacks. Sure enough, yesterday, “the military wing of the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC)” responded by launching mortar attacks on the Israeli forces–and now Israel has renewed its air strikes on the Gaza-Egptian border at Rafa, hitting four tunnels and killing two Palestinians.
At the same time, the Israeli blockade of Gaza continues to prevent essential humanitarian aid from reaching the civilian population. Items currently blocked include:
The Logistics Cluster continues to request clearance of the following items currently listed in the document ‘Clearance Status of Humanitarian Cargo’:
- PARC wheelchairs – Delayed since 02 April
- Mercy Corps International construction material – Delayed since 01April
- UNICEF children’s toys and musical instruments – Delayed since 03 March
- FAO veterinary supplies – Delayed since 19 February
- UK MAP medical equipment – Delayed since 30 January
- ACF and UNICEF WASH items for rehabilitation of water infrastructure – Delayed since January 2009
Wheelchairs may be blocked from entering Gaza, along with Mercy Corps shipment of windows for rebuilding houses and UNICEF’s educational supplies, but Secretary of State Clinton reassured “the House Foreign Affairs Committee that ‘the crossings are no longer completely closed [and] there are many items that are being transported through the crossings.’"
As Human Rights Watch noted in response:
"Washington should disassociate itself from unlawful Israeli policies that directly harm civilians," Whitson said. "Failure to do so suggests US support for a policy that violates international law."

I’m afraid to ask…but what is Obama doing about it?
Israel, after sending notes and making phone calls to the Palestinians begging for mortar attacks from Palestinian militants, was forced to resort to other methods so that they could have them.
I see a lot of Delayeds here what about a delay on aid to Israel until they stop doing this stupid shit.
Thank you Siun. The numbers of people still homeless, the continuing deterioration of the health of children–the whole situation is beyond infuriating.
Even more than obama doing something, what is rahm going to do? The likudniks will know that they control obama’s reaction as long as rahm doesn’t do anything.
Is Israel gearing up for a new attack? Will they wait until the American Congress is out of session or will they humiliate Obama and Hilary and attack now?
This terrible situation is never going to end. Was just reading that Bibi’s gov’t wants to get the citizens to stop thinking about a state for the Palestinians and to concentrate on Iran. The Israeli gov’t is so paranoid that they would rather start WWIII or destroy everyone – including themselves – than to talk reasonably with the Palestinians.
my heart is crying.
OT: So the only person who went to jail in the AIPAC spying case was the Catholic guy. Hmmmmm.
Rahm will leak some stories to the press claiming that the WH is 100% behind Israel just when is Obama going to fire Rahm the guy is so Obvious when he leaks a story.
Half the time the Rahm leak is false the guy is an Amateur!
Thanks for all your posts, Siun. I am so long frustrated and angered by the Palestinians’ suffering that I can’t bear reading or listening too much on the subject, but I have comfortably come to rely on you to keep me abreast of the flashpoints and horrible, crappy developments therein.
Thanks, Siun. Would it be helpful to call Congresspeople? I want to aim at the Congressional Progressive Caucus. I wonder how many of them will protest.
Corporate media will be ready to spin. This is heartbreaking!
24 Congresspeople sympathetic to Palestine plight who went on the record before: Lois Capps, John Olver, David Price, Keith Ellison, Betty McCollum, Jackie Speier, Donna Edwards, Bob Filner, Earl Blumenaurer, Jim McDermott, James McGovern, Nick Rahall, John Yarmuth, John Dingell, Mike Thompson, Lynn Woolsey, James Moran, Maurice Hinchey, Dennis Kucinich, Joe Sestak, Barbara Lee, Pete Stark, Michael Capuano, Sam Farr
Joe Sestak is on the list! Good.
Evening all,
I’m traveling so can’t stay for comments but wanted to note these developments since they certainly look like a parallel to November – and Netanyahu has said that the Dec/Jan attack on Gaza stopped “too soon.”
The continued blockade of essential supplies is horrifying … and another way the Israeli government provokes reactions.
The video is from an mission to Gaza in March – the pictures certainly tell a very clear story.
Calls are very valuable since there’s been a general assumption that we don’t care about the Palestinians … good list Libby!
Obama will never fire Rahm. He didn’t choose him as a result of naivete, he knew exactly what he was getting… a lying, cheating, weasel. It might not bode well but having such a person serving as WHCOS must in some way suit Obama’s purposes.
U.S. violating international law.
Yawn
President Obama shortly after becoming American President sternly denounced Israeli brutality and wanton killing of innocent Gazan civilians and children so it is unlikely the new Israeli PM–Bibi Netanyahu–will risk more Obama WH adverse reaction.
Right? President Obama did denounce Israel over the Gaza attack did he not shortly after becoming President?
That would have been the decent thing to do would it not?
So–President Obama did the decent thing–did he not?
No–he did not. And Israel will only do more of the same. Illegal occupation and war crimes anyone?
I think the idea is to create a Palestinian state on the West Bank and make Israel live with that reality. It would also be nice if there was a DMZ (about 100 miles wide) between them, but the area is pretty small, so that’s hard to achieve.
This is a winner. Study a map and you’ll figure out that 100 mile wide DMZ
Thank you, Siun. The destruction of agricultural production and bulldozing of orchards is obviously denial of food to the Palestinians as well as their income; and the world demands that the Palestinians just be compliant?
If some of our bordering countries did the same to us, what would be the expected result – compliance?? I think not.
Seconded.
This is a heartbreaking situation. It just continues to get worse and worse, as Isreal’s influence in our government increases. The American, Larry Franklin, who passed intel to AIPAC/Israeli agents is now serving a 12-year prison sentence, but the charges were dropped against the AIPAC/Israeli spies, but not before they used thier influence to derail Chas Freeman’s appointment to the National Intelligence Council chairmanship.
The decision to drop the charges against Rosen and Weissman was taken despite significant objections from FBI officials who pushed up until the very last minute to go through with the prosecutiions.
The lure of money is more powerful than standing on morals or principles, no matter the level of inhumanity – on any issue by most of the members of congress and senate.
Should we challenge them visit Gaza, and to live incognito for a week? Or gather a great number of Americans and Europeans to go to stay in the WestBank and Gaza, to stand on the borders as human shields, and break their repugnant and immoral blockade? They flattened one Rachel Corrie, but would they do the same to 5000?
Things are not getting better. Isreael’s agents of influence control our foreign policy, who gets elected or appointed in our country, and the amount, contitions, and recipients of foreign aid.
Canada is not fairing any better. George Galloway, a British MP has been denied entry, and labeled a terrorist supporter for his work at getting humanitarian aid to Gaza.
We need to come up with some alternate ways to help the Palestinians suffering from this never-ending brutal punishment for refusing to be ethinically cleansed from the land that Zionists covet.
This goes hat in hand with our need to push these infiltrators out of our government. We are both occupied, the difference is only the degree. Their treatment of Palestinians is a perfect example of how they’ll treat us when they finally run the whole show.
We need some new ideas. They old ones aren’t working.

MY CONTRIBUTION: “If I Had A Rocket Launcher” Lyrics by Bruce Cockburn
(EXCERPT)”If I had a rocket launcher…I would not hesitate
I want to raise every voice — at least I’ve got to try.
Every time I think about it water rises to my eyes.
Situation desperate echoes of the victims cry
If I had a rocket launcher…some sonofabitch would die”
