A couple months ago Jane called to give me some disturbing news. She warned me that it was heart of darkness time right near where she was living! One of the most reprehensible extremists any of us had ever run across, Barbara Comstock, is trying to get into elected office. Many of us first heard about Comstock when we read David Brock’s book, Blinded By The Right
One night in the winter of 1995, as the scandal over the firings of workers in the White house travel office reached a crescendo on the Hill I received a late night telephone call from one of Ted’s colleagues on an investigative committee, Barbara Comstock. Around the committee, the two Barbaras [Comstock and Olsen] were known as “the Barbarellas,” a reference to the 1968 movie starring Jane Fonda as a space-age vixen whose cosmic adventures take her to bizarre planets via rocket ships. Late night calls from Barbara Comstock were not unusual. She often telephoned with the latest tidbit she had dig up in the thousands of pages of administration records she pored through frantically, as if she were looking for a winning lottery ticket she had somehow mislaid. A plain woman with tousled reddish brown hair, she once dropped by my house to watch the rerun of a dreadfully dull Whitewater hearing she had sat through all day. Comstock sat on the edge of her chair shaking, screaming over and over again, “Liars!” As Comstock’s leads failed to pan out and she was unable to catch anyone in a lie, the Republican aide confided that the Clinton scandals were driving her to distraction, to the unfortunate point that she was ignoring the needs of her own family.
A very smart lawyer by training and the main breadwinner for her charismatic, happy-go-lucky husband and kids, Comstock remarked that maybe she couldn’t get Hillary’s sins off her brain “because Hillary reminds me of me. I am Hillary.” In this admission a vivid illustration of a much wider “Hillary” phenomenon can be seen. Comstock knew nothing about Hillary Clinton. Comstock’s “Hillary” was imaginary, a construction composed entirely of the negative points in her own life.
Comstock invited me to go along on an expedition to the Washington home of senior White House aide David Watkins, the central figure in the travel scandal Olson and Comstock were probing. A short time later, Republican lawyers Comstock, Olson, and other congressional investigators, including David Bossie, and Whitewater investigator Christopher Bartomolucci, pulled up outside my house in an SUV. Though I wasn’t sure what the group hoped to accomplish– they were visibly frustrated with their inability so far to incriminate Watkins– I went along for the ride. Olson explained that Congressman Sonny Bono had cleared us into the private, gated community where both Bono and Watkins lived, in the northwest section of Georgetown. When we arrived at our destination, Olsen giddily leapt from the truck, trespassed onto Watkins’s property, and hopped down a steep cliff that abutted his home. Barbara peered into Watkins’s window where she observed him– watching television. No crime there. (Blinded by The Right by David Brock, p 208, 209.)
But it was Digby who pretty much broke the news that Comstock was acting as the GOP’s #1 oppo character assassin. She’s been in the middle of every Republican dirty trick for 2 decades– from Scooter Libby, Monica Goodling, Dan Burton, the Florida 2000 vote theft, John Ashcroft, and Tom DeLay. And her list of big time right-wing donors reads like a list of all the worst in American politics– from Ted Olson, Eric Cantor, Bill Bennett, Michael Chertoff and Jay Sekulow to Borks and Ledeens, Matalins, Maleks, Toensings, Townsends and even a Scalia! It’s a shame she isn’t running for something in DC, which is where all of her contributors are from and where she has focused 100% of her smarmy political efforts, like her current jihad against Employee Free Choice. She’s certainly never done anything remotely connected to the district she’s trying to capture now.
Fortunately, the seat Barbara Comstock is trying to get her hands on is held by one of the smartest, best-liked and most competent state legislators in Virgina, progressive icon Margi Vanderhye. Watch the brief video interview with her above and you’ll get a feeling for what she’s all about before joining us in the comments section for a live session.
Margi has been active in Virginia community service for over two decades but she’s new to the House of Delegates. In her first term she’s focused on a wide array of issues that are most important for people in Northern Virginia: economic development (especially of the “green” variety), environmental protection, strengthening public education, sensible solutions to the transportation crisis, and improving health care. This year she authored a law to expand the screening and treatment of breast and cervical cancer for Virginia women, which is being used as a model across the country. There’s plenty more about her– plus an opportunity to sign up as a volunteer at her website.
Comstock has one thing going for her: big money from every right-wing donor Inside-the-Beltway. That’s why Blue America has decided to make Margi our first endorsement this year. We started a Blue America ActBlue page for her and we’re giving away cool CD packs to the 20 top donors today.

About Firedoglake
Margi, welcome to Firedoglake– and congratulations on becoming the first candidate we’ve endorsed anywhere this year. Many of our members are very much aware of who Barbara Comstock is and I suspect we may get some questions about her, but before we do, can you tell us how you’ve been doing as a freshman legislator and how you’re fairing with your constituents? And is this a district that has been voting Democratic lately?
Welcome to FDL this afternoon Delegate Vanderhye.
What is the composition of this district?
When you were first elected, was it an open seat or did you defeat an incumbent? Had it previously been gerrymandered for a specific person?
Welcome Ms. Vanderhye. I wish you luck in your race. We don’t need anyone like Barbara Comstock in government anywhere. I have a question. Are you prepared for when the race gets ugly(as it surely will given Ms. Comstock’s history)? You can’t be afraid to take the fight to her.
Welcome to Firedoglake! I was delighted to be one of your early supporters in your previous successful run for office. Can’t imagine letting Comstock take that seat away from you. Keep us posted on your campaign.
Hi and thanks for having me meet with you today! I am so pleased to have the chance to talk about our race and discuss how important this particular match up is for our district. I am running to represent a district that has been trending Democratic since Mark Warner was elected in 2001. We have voted Democratic ever since with the exception of Frank Wolf’s races. I have worked with legislators across the Commonwealth in a bi-partisan fashion for common sense legislation for schools, higher ed, transportation funding and environmental issues. I debated Bob Marshall on the floor of the House on stem cell restrictions to an economic development bill that I so-sponsored, and I have championed energy effficiency bills in committe hearings too. Because I have worked on state issues since 1989, I was able to “hit the ground running” when I got to Richmond. We have a centrist district that appreciates common sense, solution oriented government. That’s what I represent.
The district includes most of MCLean, all of Great Falls, the Fairfax County part of Herndon, and the Wolf Trap precincts in Vienna. The McLean and Herndon areas tend to be more Democratic, and the Great Falls areas are more conservative. One of the common interests, regardless of politics, is the environment because the Potomac River forms the border for our entire district. When I ran in 2007, it was an open seat. I succeeded Vince Callahan, a Republican, who had represented the area for 40 years.
Margi, are there any outstanding issues that are going to determine the outcome of this race? I guess what I mean to ask is if there are any divisive wedge issues that right wing extremists normally use to confuse voters that can come to the fore in the contest. Can she try to make it a contest about same-sex marriage or hatred of immigrants or anything like that? I can’t see her campaigning on something like Free Scooter Libby.
This is a centrist district, and the voters appreciate someone who has actually been working with them in the community for a long time. If the race gets “ugly”, it will very easy to remind voters of the tactics of the last 8 years in Washington and ask them if they are nostalgic for that kind of politics!
Thanks! We keep updating our website and our events calendar too. You can always get in touch with us at http://www.vanderhye.com. As an early supporter, you know that I really DO welcome feedback, ideas, and thoughts about our efforts and message. I don’t think our electorate wants the Bush Government in Exile representing them in Richmond. WE are going to make sure our message gets out!
What is the current make-up of the VA House of Delegates? Are you able to work easily with the folks from the southeastern parts of the state?
The crytic buzz phrases we are hearing at the national and state levels seem to be keeping us “business friendly” which has a veiled anti- working people message behind it. Witness the recent vote during veto session to turn away $125 million in stimulus funds for unemployment benefits – all for people who are trying to do the right thing through job training and part time employment! This is money that will go to to other states becaue the House Republicans wanted to “send a message” to Washington. Now our tax payers will pick up the tab for their short sided partisan approach!
How do the residents there take to the idea of having a “celebrity” who really has nothing to do with local issues jumping into the race? She’s certainly energized the Inside-the-Beltway right-wing donor base. But is she energizing normal Republican voters in Great Falls? Or are people resentful about someone like her trying to use the district as a stepping stone to national ambitions?
The House is currently 55 Republicans and 45 Democrats. We need 6 more seats to take the majority and 5 to share committe chairs. Of the 100 delegates 16 are women, and 11 of those are Democrats. I have been able to work with people across the entire state. I have worked with Republican legislators along with my caucus members on a number of measures such as the breast and cervical cancer treatment bill that will benefit all Virginians regardless of their politics. I think that is the way you get things done – by paying attention to your district and keeping a “big picture” focus on the Commonwealth too.
“Celebrity” is a relative term in the 34th district. We have people whose faces are routinely on the evening news, and people who are celebrated in their fields, yet anonymous by virtue of their work in the intelligence community or in private industry. So people aren’t likely to be swayed by her profile, and as you say, in the district, she is not well known at all because she hasn’t been involved here.
She worked as an intern or something for Wolf when she was just a very young winger. Does that mean anything in the district? By the way, what’s the date of the election?
Do you have a local feel for why medical costs go up 10% every year?
Far, far more than the government overall inflation rate.
I want to remind everyone that Barbara Comstock has access to vast amounts of right-wing institutional contributions– and she’s getting a huge amount of money. Jane, Digby, John and I decided to make Margi Blue America’s first candidate this year because we all felt that donating grassroots money to her race is the only way we can stop Comstock from getting a toe-hold in Virginia politics– and at the expense of a proven and outstanding progressive. You can donate at our Blue America page. I hope we can at least neutralize the money Ted Olson and Eric Cantor have given her! I’ll match every single $5 donation that comes in today.
She has worked for Frank Wolf, Dan Burton, been the public voice of the Bush Justice Department, and an advocate with Tom DeLay and Scooter Libby’s defense teams. Throughout her caree, her work has been focused on selling a divisive and partisan message to a fairly narrow group who welcomes that kind of rhetoric. I expect Frank Wolf to be on “her team”, but I expect to run on my own record with my own advocates who include Mark Warner, Tim Kaine, Jim Webb, and a host of well known and respected leaders. THE ELECTION IS NOVEMBER 3rd. We have 6 months of hard work ahead but we have the right message for the district and we will be getting it out there every day!
Clearly, medical costs and insurance premiums are a major issue in this country. Both national candidates talked extensively about this in the presidential races last year. AS you know, there is currently a debate in Congress about the best way to provide health care to our citizens. In Virginia, one out of every seven Virginians has no health insurance. You may be interested to know that during the veto session, we approved legislation to establish a program for small businesses to provide better access to health care to their employees. It’s a tough issue and I think we can do more along the lines of the program we just approved in Richmond!
Thanks so much! You can be sure we will use the donations to get out our message and talk about what’s important to Virginians: education, transportation, energy and environmental policies that will create jobs and reduce pollution, and the public health and safety.
Margi, is it too early for voters in the district to be aware of this race? Is anything happening yet? Also, will there be any debates? Have there been any media endorsements yet?
Bush increased spending from 1.9 trillion a year to 2.9 trillion a year, (during his 8 years in office), did your district get any benefit besides Medicare, Part D?
It is not too early for voters to focus on the race. We are going door to door and I am reintroducing myself to voters, many of whom have greeted me warmly and remember when I knocked on their door in 2007. AS a legislator, I continue to attend events and to stay in touch with voters on the issues that are important to the district. We would welcome any volunteers who would like to canvass with us, and you can indicate your willingness to help by going to our website at http://www.vanderhye.com. We are having fund raisers and coffees at peoples’ homes, and I am always willing to chat with a group of people of any size to hear what’s on their mind. Debates and media endorsements are likely in the fall when the “campaign season” will be underway – but I welcome early endorsements certainly!
I believe that government contractors, and therefore the local economy, benefitted from the spending that related to the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Having said that, the government to private sector relationship is now and has been historically strong in the 34th district; we include the businesses of Tysons Corner, many of whom have contracts with the federal government in any economy.
Do you see this as a rerun of Janet Howell’s 1999 Senate race where she was presented with a right wing hack who she proceeded to crush?
Margi, is there any message that you want us, as bloggers, to get out that will be most helpful? Is there an overriding issue in the race? Or are people going to see this as a race of Good against Evil?
Hi, I just donated at the Blue America Link and even though Howie doesn’t realize that it is 2009, I couldn’t pass up a chance to have him MATCH my small donation!
If I had a million gazillion dollars to give, this would be a race I’d be putting it up for – I LOATHE Babs.
She’s the scummiest, most self-entitled ass I know (besides David Addington) but that should give you a benchmark to understand what a creep she really is.
I take nothing for granted, and I never assume that people will make the correct distinctions between my record of proven community and government service and my opponent’s record. I think we go out and tell our story all over again every day between now and November 3rd. But let’s be clear: there is are real and important distinctions between my opposition and me, and the voters should know that the choice is stark.
I would welcome the chance to have our message promoted, and to have our opposition revealed for the partisan divisve factions that they represent. I use the term “opposition” deliberately, because this is a concerterd effort on the part of a national group who were dismayed that Virginia voted for a Democrat in the 2008 and would like to reverse the results in 2009. Let’s ask voters in the 34th district and supporters everywhere: do we really want to be represented in Richmond by the guys who brought us the policies of the last eight years?
Margi, do you think you will have Webb and Warner and Kaine in the district campaigning for you? That’s some pretty heavy firepower. Another member of the House of Delegates told me he thinks this is the most important legislative race this year. I notice we’ve about run out of time and I want to thank you on behalf of the whole community for spending the time with us today. Please keep in touch and let us know if there’s anything we can do to help as the race goes forward.
In addition to getting our message out, I would welcome your contributions to our campaign. I really need your help, especially given the funding that the national Republican operatives will be directing to my opponent. Every time we get additional support, we can reach more people. Our website is http://www.vanderhye.com and it includes a contribution link. THANKS!
Webb, Warner, and Kaine are all committed to helping, and we will let you know when those events are scheduled. Thanks so much to everyone who participated today. I am grateful for your help. Margi
