Talk of secession is so morally repugnant it’s hard to adequately condemn. Secession is a racist code word being used by some Republicans to improve their 2010 chances. They should repudiate it.

Based on the torture memos just released, I had trouble seeing how John Ashcroft, a devout fundamentalist Christian, could have allowed himself to approve. But having re-read the gospel story of Jesus’ arrest and trial, it suddenly became clear: Ashcroft is the 21st century version of Caiaphas.

The torture apologists are out there claiming that we got “half” of what we “know” on al Qaeda from torture. But as the May 30, 2005 Bradbury memo makes clear, they’re talking about sheer number of reports, not quality of information.

Scott Johnson of Power Tools has discovered the true meaning of the term “tea-bagging,” and finds the concept shocking and repulsive, although perhaps strangely intriguing. And this from somebody who for years has been intimate with someone calling himself “Hind Rocket.”

The “torture memos” released Thursday show us how America’s gulags systematically and deliberately committed torture – a war crime – under explicit polcies of the Bush White House Office of Legal Counsel. President Obama’s decision to release the torture memos is a major step forward for the rule of law.

Why you would hide the torture memos: it’s not the torture, it’s the tortured reasoning.
