FBI Zubaydah Interrogator Calls George Bush a Liar: “No Actionable Intelligence Gained from Using Enhanced Interrogation Techniques” |
| By: Jane Hamsher Thursday April 23, 2009 10:06 am |
Ali Soufan, an FBI interrogator who stayed mum for seven years about “the false claims magnifying the efectiveness of the so-called enhanced interrogation techniques like waterboarding” breaks his silence. Along with other CIA and FBI agents present, he questioned Zubadayah in June of 2002 before “harsh techniques” were introduced:
Under traditional interrogation methods, he provided us with important actionable intelligence.
Tribune Corp Asks for $13 Million in Bonuses While 53 Reporters Get the Axe |
| By: Lisa Derrick Thursday April 23, 2009 9:01 am |
Tribune asked U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware to authorize bonus payments would amount to about $13 million for 693 managers (over $19,000 per person if averaged out). Chief Executive Sam Zell and nine other of Tribune’s top executives would not be eligible for the bonuses. Tribune’s rationale: These payments are vitally necessary to reward participants for their extraordinary contributions during an exceptionally difficult year.

FBI Weren’t the Only Ones Objecting to Torture — So Did the Army, Marines & Air Force |
| By: Jane Hamsher Thursday April 23, 2009 7:08 am |
As Digby notes, there were already serious objections to the use of torture in 2002 — the FBI chief Muller had already refused to let his agents participate in the CIA’s “coercive interrogations” in June of 2002 (per Marcy’s timeline, the Bybee memo didn’t make them legal until August 1).
But it’s not like the FBI was the only one who had a problem.
Stand Up for the Rule of Law; Stand Up for the Next Head of OLC, Dawn Johnsen |
| By: Christy Hardin Smith Thursday April 23, 2009 6:08 am |
Honestly, why on earth do they let John Cornyn anywhere near a reporter to pretend to discuss anything substantive? “I just don’t think she’s qualified for the job,” Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas. “First of all, she’s an ideologue … she has actually questioned whether we are actually at war against terrorists. She questioned whether the wartime paradigm that the president is the commander-in-chief was the appropriate framework of analysis for determining what the president’s powers are during a time of war.” I can see how Dawn’s years of work at OLC, where she was universally respected by her colleagues and even opposing politicos and commenters, and did an exemplary job already running the office as acting head for a year and a half would make her seem really unqualified to Mr. Empty Hair.
