We’re all familiar with the tale of the scorpion and the frog, n’est-ce pas? Scorpion asks the frog to help him across the river. The frog demurs, fearing that the scorpion will sting him and he’ll die. "Nonsense," replies the scorpion, "if I sting you while we’re crossing the river, we’ll both drown."
Accepting that logic, the frog agrees to give the scorpion a ride on his back. Halfway across the river, the scorpion stings the frog. "What the fuck?!" cries the frog. "Oh, like you didn’t know," the scorpion sneers, as they sink to the bottom. "It’s in my nature."
There has to be something in the pathological makeup of Beltway Democrats, that, like the gullible frog, they keep agreeing to get stung, over and over. And for the second time in two days, stung they got by that old scorpion, Arlen Specter. From the Huffington Post:
It didn’t take long for Sen. Arlen Specter to let his new colleagues in the Democratic Party know that his vote won’t be taken for granted.
A day after abandoning the Republican Party for the Democrats, saying the latter better represented his political philosophy, Specter voted against President Obama’s budget — which he and other Democrats have described as a manifestation of the party’s political philosophy.
Specter was greeted warmly by his new fellow party members on his way into the chamber.
"Welcome," said Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), extending his hand when he saw Specter exit the elevator.
No word on whether Specter bit Levin’s hand or merely ignored it.
Honestly, what the hell did Harry Reid, the Senate’s top invertebrate, think he was getting with Specter? The day after he switched parties and THEN announced that he wouldn’t support Obama’s choice for OLC, Specter cheerfully explained his motives:
Arlen Specter, the longtime Republican senator who switched parties Tuesday, admitted Wednesday the move was driven partly by a desire to keep his seat.
The senator, who has represented Pennsylvania in the upper chamber since 1980, said he was "anxious" to stay in the Senate — and he did not want to face a Republican primary in order to keep his seat next year.
"I was unwilling to subject my 29-year record in the U.S. Senate to the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate," he said. "But I am pleased to run in the primary on the Democratic ticket and am ready, willing and anxious to take on all comers in the general election."
And President Obama, Vice President Biden, and Harry Reid all think that this blatant, craven opportunism is just wonderful for the Democratic Party, so fantastic, in fact, that they’re willing to deny real Democrats a chance to run for the Senate seat.
Well played, suckers. Let me know when those wire transfers from that Nigerian bank finally come through.

who could have anticipated…
Ui-Kacha!
That’s alright. The Party can do as it likes and those of us actually in the party can fund any and all challengers as much as we can afford and the law allows.
I think they put something in the DC water supply.
Anybody with a pulse and two functioning neurons.
Shorter Dems: “Doctor, it hurts when I do this.”
they keep doing the same thing over and over and anticipating different results. it wasn’t that long ago that they got stung by joe short ride lieberman.
the very definition of “insanity”.
I tell you, it is something in the water. The DC press corpse, the politicians, everybody is affected.
maybe they like the sting – that is the only logical conclusion i can come up with.
The whole thing was telegraphed by how they handled Liebermole.
Even though I seriously detest Snarlin’ Arlen, I am basking in the Schadenfrude.
How’s that working for ya now, ya crazy rat bastard fundamentalist right wing Republicans?
Oh, by the way, my contempt for Joe Lieberman is infinite and eternal.
“Hey, Harry – see that pile of dog shit sittin over there?”
hey harry, watch me pull a rabbit outta my hat
I am afraid that the Blue Dogs and moderate Republicans are staging a coup in the Democratic Party (actually I think it happened under Clinton) to create a center-right party. It may be time for the actual progressives to create out own party.
I bet their feet smell and they have bad breath.
Think I will call it an early night. Take care all.
Reminds me of an old joke about a guy who goes bear hunting and ends up getting sodomized by a bear. After he recuperates he goes back and the same thing happens again. After several repeat occurrences he returns and upon entering the woods is confronted by a bear who tells him, “Face it Bill, you ain’t coming out here for the hunting.”
Agaiiiiin?
ARLEN is a teh old goat
g’nite dr dick
nite DD
Sign me up dude.
After watching Pelosi, Reid and quite a few others shit in our nest, I am all for it.
hey PA aintcha got no better than old magic bullet?
Much as I’ve lamented the two-party system progressives splintering off from the Dems would just pave the way for Republicans to return to power. Best course is what we’re doing now, fund progressive candidates and encourage primary challenges against the Blue Dogs.
who as been around since the Cretaceous period
This is it exactly. I’ve been saying this since about 1995 and it’s been so out in the open for the past few years. Can’t for the life of me understand why so many other Liberals don’t realize that Reid, Feinstein, Bayh, etc. do what they do ON PURPOSE, and not out of bumbling stupidity. They are there to prevent any real Liberal reform to The System from happening.
It’s in their nature!
Like with Clinton in the 1990s, people usually say back to me, “Well, Senator so-and-so did get this one good thing through,” and yadda yadda, but this is so simple as well, because of course they have to throw a bone or two our way to keep up the charade, otherwise they eventually wouldn’t be able to call themselves Dems.
This Senator MagicBullet switcherewski is pathetic and all part of the dance. They need to be voted off the show, and that’s the ONLY solution. Viva Blue America!
i concur
Way too hard. Much easier solution is just try to reclaim the Dem Party, of which we’ve been having some success. Let’s just keep building on the momentum, yes?
yup…corps own these cretins…well cretins are more honest actually
The frog and the scorpion may be the perfect analogy. While I am dismayed and shocked that the fabled and feeble Dems ran out into the street to greet Grandpa Arlen, after the crown and scepter (ryhmes with Specter)they gave Lieberman, I should be surprised at nothing. The President made a very gracious (but gratuitous)phone call and it took only a few hours for the self-aggrandizing aging Senator to urinate on the red carpet they rolled out for him by saying he would support the agenda and then promptly voted against the proposed Presidential budget.
In addition to being dense, gullible, naive and stupid, we are dense, gullible, naive and stupid. I wonder what enormously ridiculous stunt we will fall for on day 200?
Me 2. Barbara and I were talking about this earlier.
It’s a long, slow process. But, I think it’s good for our country in the long run. In as much as a lot of folks have been disappointed in the current administration’s lack of progressiveness, I think it’s better to establish a center and let the left progressives move away from that. This might just be the opportunity to step away from a two party system. I’m tired of the bi-polar pendulum swinging so far back and forward every 8 – 12 years. That’s just my two cents about it tonight.
I have no problem with anyone calling themselves anything they want to be known as if they believe in the worth and dignity of every human being, the separation of church and state, the right of every citizen to privacy and equal protection under the law, and that truth about our existence evolves as science can objectively validate facts from hypothesis, theory, fiction and myth.
OTOH if someone has issues with the five items I listed above, I see them as irrelevent to the discussion of where we go from here. The above is not gray. The above is not up for debate. The above is not up for compromise.
In that Specter’s “defection” helps to further denounce and marginalize folks opposing the five items i listed above, this has been a very good week for America.
five items you listed above where, dear?
I’m confused.
if they believe in the worth and dignity of every human being, the separation of church and state, the right of every citizen to privacy and equal protection under the law, and that truth about our existence evolves as science can objectively validate facts from hypothesis, theory, fiction and myth.
The surprise about Specter’s defection is not that he was too liberal for the Republican party but that the Democratic party was conservative enough to take him in.
Primary the son of a bitch.
Harry may have promised him no opposition in the Democratic Primary, but when did Harry Reid join the Pennsylvania Democratic Party. Someone, please, put forward a good union-supporting liberal candidate to run against Arlen Spectre [sic].
If he’s really stupid enough to vote against cloture for EFCA, that ought to drive the last nail into the coffin housing the political career of another Beltway Bandit.
Oh, okay. I believe that stuff and I call myself Demi.
Yes, we need better Dems:
The Hill article is true: I’m considering a run at Jane Harman’s seat

What Hugh said.
Then this discussion leads me to believe that you are worth discussing the future with
You’re not really surprised, are you?
You cannot be serious?
RINO to DINO, big whoop.
I’ve often said, Words don’t mean, people do. But, then we have to look at how each individual really feels about those 5 things listed. Idealistically, we all live under those views, as part of our Constitution. But, how we play those ideals out is a different story. I’m looking forward to some diversity so that we can learn from the best of all sides.
Honey, they just off loaded their problem onto us.
Dude, I’m with ya!
Anyone mention yet tonight that Specter is 79 now, would be 80 in 2010 when he ran again, and that a month after the next Congress came in he would be 81 years old. This seems completely screwy to me. I have nothing against elders but I think he is too elder already to effectively represent anyone but himself. The Senate should not be an institution where members expect to be carried out feet first.
Usually when I think “Why can’t President Obama’s administration see X”, it turns out they could see X all along. When Senator Specter gets beaten by a real Democrat in the Democratic primary, I think President Obama’s administration will quietly be as happy as most of the people at FDL. If they promised Senator Specter they would campaign and raise money for him, they have to do it. If they said they would not run somebody against him, they can’t. The fact is he will have a Democratic challenger. Then we will find out what happens when a movable object (Sen. Specter the Defector), meets an irresistible force (the Democratic Primary).
That’s right. Fews if any of his choices would appear to have been the product of deliberation of merit.
Progressive Party anyone? Anyone??
Specter’s ‘defection’ has frightened a lot of very bad people, who are really not interested in anything except more for themselves at the expense of the common good and human decency.
It’s late and I don’t want to try any harder to make myself clearer.
Good night.
g’nite hychka
Well, okay. Have a good one.
I hope it wasn’t something I said.
Plus, hello? 2 time cancer survivor! Time to retire, old dude!
maybe he is afraid of losing that government run health plan and knows with his history, he can’t get private insurance
Maybe you need a skweegee and some vinegar.
Isn’t that the classic definition of insanity (or is is a function of too many years spent east of Leesburg and west of Annapolis)?
Arlen Spectre, snarling pit-bull of the raging center. Scary.
hey jo fish – how ya been?
I was gonna say that! Hey jo fish.
Except fld’ers wont be quiet about their happiness. And anyone who tries to suggest that the Obama folks are hoping for results contrary to their stated desired results is naive in the extreme. Obama is wildly better in many ways than Bushco, but it is wise to remember that, in a;ll, he is still a POLITICIAN.
Brain tumor, heart bypass, 2 occurrences of Hodgkin’s, and old.
But if those were criteria to just sit at home and wait for God, this would be a very thin population.
But man, don’tcha think that he’d rather play golf?? Seriously, why does he have to keep fuckin’ with us??
Good… got a post pending…how are you all this foine evening?
power
He is a habitual politician. He is an addict. He is addicted to manipulation.
Power don’t mean dick to a dead man.
Are you suggesting that a politician would hope for results contrary to their stated desired results? :)
But what about dick cheney?
Lovely, Jo, how you?
No argument there. But he’s fuckin’ with us because we (Harry Reid) as much as told him he could.
We (Harry Reid) said “Come on over, we’ll shift the party Right just for you.”
“And no worries, Arlen – we would never try to strike a bargain with you, like your seniority in exchange for 100% cloture votes, or letting the President have his appointments, or a budget, or his US Attorneys, or, Dawg-forbid, a Supreme Court Justice.”
I’m starting to think that the tent may be too big.
I think the new party that will form from the death throes of the GOP will be a neo-Whig party. They’ll siphon off the Blue Dogs and the other Corporocrats and leave the Party of Lincoln a collection of batshit crazy Reich-wingers based in the Old South.
How’s that Southern Strategy workin’ for ya now?
I didn’t say anything about a robot!
Well, yeah. My point. RINO to DINO, big whoop.
Over the next 18 months, my guess is that there will be several occasions
concerning critical matters [health care, a Supreme or some such] that we will be glad Specter is with us.
How am I? Waiting for Al Franken to be seated, for Olympia Snow to finally follow the Specter Underground Railroad for Moderate Republicans in “recovery” and for Dick Cheney to shoot another lawyer this bird season.
Other than that, I have no expectations of anything changing much. I’m a cynic. :-)
Huh. Hadn’t thought of that. Certainly has a slew of “pre-existing conditions,” but why should he worry since the free market work it all out for him, right?
How are you tonight Suzanne? My suggestion for Late Night…hehe
Just because.
Except those bat-shit crazies aren’t being siphoned off, so much as the slightly less bat-shit crazies are being invited into the Democratic Party. The southern strategy was doomed from the moment of conception, it just took awhile for the abortion to happen. In the meantime, our democratic “leaders” are handing our Party over to THEM!
tonight is eureka springs’ nite for late late nite joe fish – that’s a classic
Hold on. Hold on. I don’t get this. In the UK, I’m pretty sure that voting against your party’s budget would get the whip withdrawn right then and there.
Surely they just bin him? Express buyers’ remorse and send him to sit with Holy Joe.
Did you know that Randy Newman spent half of each year in Lafayette, La? Or maybe it was just the summers. That is why he sings in that special accent. He grew up around Cajuns.
Lovely to read y’all tonite. Good nite, an’ sweet dreams! Mwah!
It was a free vote. We didn’t need his vote. It passed 53-43.
When we need Specter’s vote we will get it.
Evenin’ all … I see that everyone’s in fine form tonight !
Petro shows, thread dies.
Nice one, dude.
aahh i’m dying…..
don’t say that
How’s the lemons?
dood, we know that – i take it no call since you are here
Must be madding, Nahant.
The Blue Dogs are going to get unhappy enough to look for a new home. They aren’t Democrats in the contemporary sense of the word. If the leadership (do you hear me Reid? Pelosi?) pushes them hard enough on important issues, they’ll seek out their natural allies.
I personally think we’ll be better served by a center-right party that understands the facts are the same for everyone. You can reason with those sorts of people. Santorum and his ilk, not so much.
But Santorum is gone. Haaaa.
Thank you jeebus.
I just had to say that it felt so good.
Amen.
Sorry my Sweetie got home so Tucker and I went to see her!

Take him in, take him on, take him out.
Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.

Specter & Lieberman are equal opportunity parasites. Obama cannot shame them into voting for the best interest of the nation over their personal interests. When the economy collapses later this year, they will attack the administration to run for re-election.
or persistence
I think you are looking at this all wrong. No matter what, the Democrats are better off with Specter than without. Time will tell, but I am guessing there are going to be plenty of votes where we can avoid the threat of a filibuster altogether. Plus, we are stuck with him until at least 2010 no matter what, so we might as well have him stick a knife in the republicans’ backs in the meantime…
I mean if I was king of the world it would be different. But I’m not. So I am willing to compromise. That’s why they call it politics.
I don’t have to like it either. But I do have to live in the real world. Much as I would prefer there was only a Democratic Party and a party to the left of that, there isn’t. And it doesn’t seem likely to happen any time soon. So I am willing to take what I can get, I will always strive for more, but at the same time I am thankful for what I already have.
His moving to the Democratic Primary will keep someone who may be a true progressive from attaining the office. I am old enough to remember the Anita Hill crap, when he berated her in front of the country, and then tried to profess his impartiality.
Here is a little blast from the past. Enjoy this potential snake in the grass.

Arlen needs a Dem primary. But it’s not Rahm/Obama/Reid who will support one. Normally I might say the dem party is populated by the likes of Harman, Bayh and other corrupt mother f*ckers, and Arlen is just another addition to the carnival. But somehow Arlen with a “D” *really* sticks in my throat. Especially having watched that guy on C-Span for oh so many years.
And Lieberman just couldn’t make up his mind whether or not to vote for Clarence Thomas or not. Some of his constituents said he had turned right wing at that time.
The sendems are the worst of the worst in dumbass world. Consider all the lies, half-lies, spins and obfuscations fed to them by bushco – they believed, then after the lies were proven they did nothing but commit cranial rectal inversion again and again. They are so afraid of doing the right thing, they overfill their depends just thinking about it.
They know they were getting a conservative. Kossacks are pressuring Snow to join the Democrats at this very moment.
