Pretty much everything you read will tie today’s confirmation to our current national frenzy over the new swine flu, but the fact is this was slowed by obstructionist Republicans so they could fire up their base and send out a few more fundraising appeals, and the final approval was long overdue.
WASHINGTON — Senators voted 65 to 31 on Tuesday to confirm Kathleen Sebelius as secretary of Health and Human Services, approving the last of President Barack Obama’s Cabinet nominees. Sebelius won approval as the U.S. is grappling with an outbreak of swine flu. The two-term Kansas governor will also lead Obama’s effort to revamp the U.S. health care system.

Now if they could just go ahead and confirm Dawn Johnsen and Harold Koh (and others) we might actually make some more progress in cleaning up the messes BushCo left.
The modern Republican Party: loves fetuses, hates people.
“revamp” was an excellent choice of word, Gregg.
Definitions of vamp on the Web:
make up; “vamp up an excuse for not attending the meeting”
piece (something old) with a new part; “vamp up an old speech”
coquette: a seductive woman who uses her sex appeal to exploit men
act seductively with (someone)
an improvised musical accompaniment
provide (a shoe) with a new vamp; “revamp my old boots”
piece of leather forming the front part of the upper of a shoe

Yep. And our newest “Democrat” has already announced that he still opposes Johnsen.
good news!
perhaps he’ll change his mind after the ritual hazing rites….
Heh, I wish I could take credit for it, but that is how the source (MarketWatch) put it. Maybe they are as skeptical as you?
Naw. . . .
I agree that it will placed in the swine flu context, and that actually will be why the Republicans will get “caught out” on this as an issue. The irony is that their blackmailing of Sibelius (and Wood) is simply political gamesmanship, and ineffective and foolish. I suspect that the hope that by not allowing these appointments Obama is going to get caught out in some mistake of advice and judgement. If so, this case would show that that could be disastrous for them.
Fortunately the CDC and DHS is well-staffed to prepare for any emergency. Where Sibelius is critically important is on the Departmental funding and lobbying of Congress re. Health Care policy. So the GOP is hoping to stall that.
Where can one get a list of who voted against her? Any have targets on their backs?
once Franken is seated will the Dems be 60-baggers?
I suggest we all e-mail our newest Dem and tell him what we expect him to do. Or he can Cheney himself.
OMG. We’re doomed.

Lieberman’s new strategy…
I confess to being a mite disappointed. I had hoped the Republicans would keep shooting themselves in the feet on Sebelius.
hopefully Rahm is keeping track. He has to be useful for something…
Yeah, my only hope is that while he was a Republican, he used Democratic talking points and then voted Republican. He said the Military Commissions Act would set back jurisprudence 900 years by voiding habeas corpus–and then voted for it. Will he now complain about Johnsen–and then vote for her? That would be the complete switch to using Republican talking points and then voting Democratic. I’m not going to hold my breath waiting for that one to happen…
is the sebelius vote.
Are we seeing those little green sprigs of hope? O how I hope..
HipHop Steele an’ the rethug ganstas on Specter’s fate:
“If Sen. Specter survives in the fall — get ready to go to the mat, baby, because we’re coming after you and taking you out,” added Steele.
um…

HERE is the sebelius vote.
Agreed. But it is interesting how quickly this went through after the swine flu outbreaks caught the nation’s attention.
The GOP ridiculous position of opposing vital government functions such as geological survey work, and preparations for dangerous infectious disease, has legs. TPM links to an embarassing interview with Steele today on CNN.
Even though some DLC type Democrats also dissed the flu spending, it is good that this story has legs. The GOP deserves the attention, even if some Dems like Nelson and Schumer were also guilty. But, there will be time to ask them to explain themselves.
“McCain (R-AZ), Nay”
thanks for clarifying where you stand, Senator Maverick
Is Steele by any chance a member of a gang? “g” Just kidding but he certainly does sound as if he could compete.
But we know he’s a jerk; maybe he would have preferred Palin. And Maybe Maghan will go after him again…
The GOP is a disorganized criminal enterprise.
And our two phenomenal senators from the great state of Texas voted nay.
It’s about damned time.
How did the lame-asses from Kansas vote? Probably Nays…
I’ll be damned. Roberts and Brownback voted yea?
Did hell just freeze over?
all I can say is if we used such language on FDL, I’m reasonably sure we’d get banned. and justifiably so. and this guy’s the head of the RNC.
It is my opinion that thirty one rethug senators voted to violate the US Constitution. They voted against her nomination to placate the religious right for her position on abortion. Abortion is a religious issue. Article 6 section 3 states that a religious test shall not be required for any position.
Jeff Kaye is upstairs!
How APA Made a Pact with DoD & CIA over Torture Interrogations
Well, she is the governor of their state. That was actually pretty nice of them (and meaningless since she had it in the bag already).
Finally! now let’s get Franken into the Senate. Maybe with Specter joining up with the party that at least wants to MOVE America ( not sure what direction yet) we can break these suckers backs.
they can stay in church and leave the rest of US alone.
Other than Kennedy & Rockefeller, who were NVs, all Dems voted Yea.
Republicans voting yea were Bond(MO), Brownback(KS), Collins(ME), Gregg(NH), Lugar(IN), Roberts(KS), Snowe(ME), Voinovich(OH).
Specter, Lieberman & Sanders were all Yea.
