Okay, so, let me get this straight: Arlen Specter switches from Republican to Democrat in a blatant act of voter-shopping (“I’m not prepared to have my 29-year record in the United States Senate decided by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate”) to prevent his ass from being kicked by Club For Growth wingnut Pat Toomey.
Specter then promises to continue voting like a Republican, and singles out EFCA as a Democratic priority that he will continue to oppose:
My change in party affiliation does not mean that I will be a party-line voter any more for the Democrats that I have been for the Republicans. Unlike Senator Jeffords’ switch which changed party control, I will not be an automatic 60th vote for cloture. For example, my position on Employees Free Choice (Card Check) will not change.
Specter’s self-serving move only gives the Democrats the illusion of 60 votes (assuming Franken gets seated before he dies of old age), so how do the Democrats play it? Do they recognize that Specter needs them more than they need him? Do they give him a motivation to change his mind, at least on cloture? Uh, not so much…
I asked Reid spokesperson Jim Manley if Reid would support Specter in the primary if his EFCA position remained what it is today. “Senator Reid is going to support Senator Specter in the primary,” Manley replied.
Brilliant. And my sleazy machine pol governor goes him one better, Torsella and Sestak notwithstanding:
Asked if Specter could win a Dem primary, Rendell said: “He’d be unopposed. The Democrats in the Senate would welcome him. We in Pennsylvania would welcome him. He’d be basically unopposed for the Democratic nomination.”
Oh, and Harry also promises to let Arlen keep his seniority, instantly making him the 8th-ranking Senator in the Democratic caucus. Well played!
As Chris Bowers puts it:
So, we not only get no new votes, but we lose the ability to challenge those votes. Apart from the image of total Republican fail, this isn’t a good thing at all. Not only do we have to deal with Specter’s voting record, which is worse than any other Democrat in the entire Senate, but we are denied the opportunity to even challenge him.
Well, technically, Specter would have had to survive the Republican primary before we could have challenged him, but yes, we lose an excellent chance to put an actual Democrat in that seat.
This all might not be too awful if it turns out that D-Arlen’s not an evil guy so much as a spineless coward who suppressed his better impulses for fear of primary opponents or lost committee assignments, as some people seem to think. But that strikes me as a triumph of hope over paying attention.
So, can anyone tell me what the Democrats gain by adding a feckless wanker like Specter to their team? What will become legislatively possible that wasn’t possible before? Because to me it looks like the Democrats just richly rewarded D-Arlen for doing nothing more than saving his own ass, and asked for nothing in return. I haven’t seen a move this clueless and lame since, well, a few months ago.
UPDATE: D-Arlen is opposed to Dawn Johnsen too. But he’s a "loyal Democrat"!

About Firedoglake
he’s a miner, forty-niner
His role in the Democratic caucus will be to make Lieberman look good.
Ding!
What did they deal away… for nothing? Setting aside the issues, how about letting so-called ‘moderates’ move an already slippery Democratic party farther to the right?
I am so sick of this slide.
And his shoes were number nine.
The GOP shrinks, the Democratic party gets diluted and polluted.
One party is small but pure, the other is large but completely unreliable.
That’s a pretty tall order.
So he’s going to be a nominal Dem? “In what respect?”
I think he’s up to it.
You answered your own question: “Nominal.”
Right. Let’s have 2 parties at each others throats, rather than one large, squishy right-of-center mass and screaming harpies at the extremist right fringe.
Just what the Founding Fathers had in mind.
So can anyone tell me what the Democrats gain by adding a feckless wanker like Specter to their team?
An intra-party wanker majority?
I think they already had that. I suppose it improves Harry’s chances of getting re-elected as ineffectual Majority Leader.
Oh, just what we needed. Another fucking DINO.
More literally than most.
There is only one good deal to be made with Specter, and the Dems have neither the brains, nor the balls to make it: vote to end cloture every fucking time. Now that would have been worth something.
Thou art lost and gone forever,
Dreadful sorry, GOP permanent majority.
Not just another fucking DINO – a DINO who got to keep all of his seniority, will get to elbow other Democrats out of committees, etc . etc. And…..we got what? Another Lieberman vote? Crud. Who’s next — Olympia Snow?
My bet is the Dem’s, and Harry, want him for funding and ‘contract’ connections’ = lobby money.
Spectre (sp) defects to influence the party in control to benefit his ‘benefactors’, and spreads some of that benefactor love around, too. Likely generating NEW benefactor love to share with others.
Life is simple. Mostly, it’s corrupted. *G*
Vote for cloture and get primary support and a committee chair. Vote against it, and we will back your primary challenger and “reset” your seniority.
Ah.
Good God, I hope not. Arlen Specter fucking is something I just don’t want to know about.
Your other Democratic Senator, Bob Casey, really really really hopes that there won’t be a primary in the Democratic party for the Senate seat in 2010. He’s on Rachel Maddow now.
Watching Rachel – Methinks Mr. Casey has a few martinis in him. Rocking back & forth ever so gently…
;~P
So Specter says that he’s still against EFCA, still against Dawn Johnson, etc.
And that will endear him to PA Democrats just how, precisely?
Was a deal made to absolutely not put a primary challenger in front of him? (have been away most of the day – don’t know all the details)
Coulda, woulda, shoulda.
Didn’t.
So, WHY didn’t?
Moolah, baby, follow the moolah.
They wouldn’t do it to Lieberman, and he was in open betrayal of his chosen party.
Harry Reid’s Dems: forty paces and 30 years behind the political curve.
The longer it goes the worse it gets.
I think you got it…What would LBJ do?
Methinks Mr. Casey has a few martinis in him.
I forgive him.
hey – if I worked in D.C., I’d never see a sober day.
Rendell sure made it sound that way. And from the Chris Bowers link:
Of course, Harry and Nancy’s goose will really be cooked when Al Franken gets confirmed. I for one plan a post:
All this talk from DeeCee Democrats about how they can’t really accomplish anything without a filibuster-proof majority will go out the window.
I believe ELI is eligible for the primary.
But I bet we’d see some kick-ass bills, eh?
Surely they expect him to bring something to the party…wouldntya think?
crap. thanks, but – crap.
Maybe by then Arlen will have stunk up the joint so badly the Rendell will be forced to reconsider.
More proof that the major parties are two heads on the same fat maggot, gnawing on the bloated corpse of Democracy. Regardless of which head is currently taking bigger bites, the prognosis remains unchanged.
I sure *hope* they were tougher behind the scenes, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they were content with the symbolic victory.
Since I can’t stand to watch, would someone please tell me what the pundits and the Beltway Blowhards are saying re Arlen….. in general, that is.
you betcha. full-goose gonzo, Fear and Loathing In Washington D.C. representation.
Bomb a shit house in Bihn Dihn province.
It occurs to me that even Joe Lieberman can’t claim to have betrayed both parties in one day.
Doesn’t matter what Reid does. It’s up to the rest of us.
The deal for Specter is simple: if he votes like a Democrat he gets a free pass. If he votes like a Republican he gets a primary challenge.
On EFCA he might as well be given a pass, because conservadems like Blanche Lincoln are already going to vote for the filibuster, and he promised such a vote. However, going forward, either he votes for cloture consistently or he does not.
One more thing: the Senate should delay any reorganization measure until the Minnesota race is settled. That way Coleman will be forced to quit.
Who will be Pennsylvania’s Ned Lamont?
I think we’re heading for a showdown between Labor and the PA and national Democratic parties.
Right now, Sestak sounds like the best bet. But he’s not exactly progressive.
What a great line. I will put it among my favorites.
His name starts with an E and ends with an I
SnArlen used to be co-sponsor of EFCA, so I don’t think his unprincipled nature, which he proved again today by switching BACK to the Democratic Party after a 43-year flirtation with the GOP, would prevent him from voting to close off debate on EFCA.
After all, it was only last month that he vowed to be a GOP forever.
The man is shameless in his pursuit of what he wants: his Senate seat. I think a lefty challenge can only help, though, especially if it comes with heavy labor support.
Rick Santorum?
O My God…maybe I should be more serious….but you cracked me up…hurt myself laughing…What will the neigbors think? I really was thinking of LBJ the majority leader….should have been more clear.
You can have him, Eli. He’s sure not my D-Arlen.
Isn’t that song about a PA-R-Specter?
Sorry, I have a limited frame of reference when it comes to that skunk.
While I agree with you wrt Arlen’s ethics, the landscape looked the same or very close to it when he uttered that promise. Why wait until now to announce, leaving that turd on the record?
Something else shifted. I’m sure Harry was a player.
I’m sure Harry was a player.
that can’t end well.
I’m sure Harry was played.
But you haven’t lost your sense of humor…one for the books. I probably woke the dead, I hafta say.
707
Exactly. If there’s a bad deal for Democrats in the offing, Reid is nearby.
I just looked at Wiki and Arlen is 79 years old. I didn’t realize he was that ancient – even older than me.
Teddy – I think it is not only his senate seat. I just read a piece that analyzed the last time someone changed from the GOP – Jeffords – and how Specter felt about it: He was livid and tried to get legislation passed to stop party changes…because with the reshuffle, he lost his chairmanship of the Veterans Affairs committee. I think he craves all the power he can cover himself with and that is why his end of the deal…was that he would keep all his time in the Senate…so he can be King on the Dem side in the Senate.
my contempt for Arlen Specter pales in comparison to my contempt for Joe Lieberman.
He wasn’t a favorite of the dog demographic either, especially the long-eared varieties.
Holy crap!:-)
Reid: “We welcome Snarlin’ Arlen’s craven cave-ins.”
If you believe Harry Reid is a sage political operative, one reason he might have accepted Arlen’s rancid terms on cloture and EFCA could be that he expects one or two other defections, and soon.
Many assumptions in that scenario, but it could happen…
HAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Look, up yonder in the sky, now, what is that I pray ?
It’s a bird it’s a plane, it’s a man insane, it’s my President LBJ
He’s flying high way up in the sky just like Superman,
But I have got a little piece of kryptonite,
Yes, I’ll bring him back to land.
Said come out Lyndon with your hands held high,
Drop your guns, baby, and reach for the sky.
I’ve got you surrounded and you ain’t got a chance,
Gonna send you back to Texas, make you work on your ranch,
Yeah, yeah, oh yeah.
He can call Super Woman and his Super Dogs,
But it sure won’t do him no good,
Yeah, I found out why from a Russian spy
That he ain’t nothing but a comic book.
We’ll pull him off the stands and clean up the land,
Yes, we’ll have us a brand new day.
What is more I got the Fantastic Four
And Doctor Strange to help him on his way.
Said come out Lyndon with your hands held high,
Drop your guns, baby, and reach for the sky.
We got you surrounded and you ain’t got a chance,
Gonna send you back to Texas make you work on your ranch,
Yeah yeah, oh yeah.
Yeah, gonna make him eat flowers.
Yeah, make him drop some acid …
I believe Harry Reid is sage brush, just tumblin’ across the Nevada desert.
I have plenty of contempt space for both.
Facts not in evidence. And if I were Gooper in search of another party, I wouldn’t want to follow Specter – I’d want to go with him.
Don’t drop acid, take it pass/fail.
There are 51 Democratic Senators who have less seniority today than they did yesterday thanks to Harry Reid’s deal with SnArlen. I wonder if any of them might be inclined to lead a rebellion against Harry’s leadership?
Rep. Joe Sestak, perhaps? I don’t know his politics in any great detail, but he said (on the Ed Show, I think) that he’s still considering a run, irrespective of Specter’s move. He’s got to be better, as he is a Democrat. Really.
If you want to go all the way there, he also has had cancer. IN PA does the Gov. appoint for vacancy? (Sorry…you started it first;)
Jonathan Chait of eventheliberal New Republic has a more optimistic take. And I am officially ending my “Draft Eli” campaign, as it doesn’t seem to have picked up any heat.
I like to see things in real black and white these days but I could tell you some stories about the quad.
We get change we can believe in, of course.
I still think we should convince JoeLie, Arlen and the Maine duo to start their own party of mindless spinelessness. Their platform will be: will do whatever to get votes…
I think what I miss most is feeling like I had the free time to do things like that.
We went from “change we can believe in” to “change we’re resigned to” in a depressingly short time…
I heard that, what ever happened to DMT, the businessman’s lunch?
I was wondering about that today. Seriously, is this the best Pennsylvania can do? Can’t Arlen go off into some retirement where he can snarl, Holy Joe can whine, and Broder can grumble.
Who are you kidding, plenty of people here never gave it a chance from jump street.
Here’s a link to a list of Specter’s voting record on various issues.
The Jellyfish Party!
Mindless, spineless and you can see right through them.
I never had the opportunity but always thought it sounded like a winner.
Portuguese Man o’ Waver
scary shit
“… but yes, we lose an excellent chance to put an actual Democrat in that seat.”
What is their problem?!
wow – that has the potential to be one big fuckin’ party….
yep, everyone but the people here
Portuguese Man or Whore? Party.
I like that. The Jellyfish Caucus.
Congratulations. The Senate Dems will, after Franken gets seated, have a majority of 58.1251. The 1/8th will be Arlen. JoLie is only rated 0.0001.
whoredom is the linguica franca of DC
When Blue Dogs are figured in the equation they’d probably need (at least) 70 seats to be filibuster-proof. The magic 60 is just a media perpetuated myth.
Some kind of pasta?
Ain’t that the truth?
When it comes to cloture, I think they’re actually in better shape than that. I think 63 or 64 would probably do it.
Just think – if the Dem’s ever get 81 seats, they could filibuster themselves…
Big IF but if current polling trends continue the midterms hold promise.
Bad for the eyes, or so I’ve been told….
They are a far bigger threat to themselves than the Republicans are right now.
My progressive bifocals concur.
judas priest eli.
so we’re talking about wankers again?
I also have progressive bifocals but it is completely unrelated, or at least that’s my story and I’m sticky, er, sticking to it.
Variations on a theme.
heya Suz – did you see that Justice Fat Tony today decreed that there are to be no more “f-words”?
fork.fork the forking fork-face
He hates to feel left out.
So what about starting a campaign fund for anyone but d’Arlen? Maybe someone better will come forward, if we raise some serious cash.
Vafforkulo.
If it’s good enough for vice president(s) it should be good enough for TV.
My lenses just fogged up a bit… need to go buff ‘em. Back in ten.
;~P
Something like this?
I wanna be the “F-word Czar”.
The day is now complete – Michele Bachmann has blamed Obama for the swine flu outbreak. What’s next?????
I saw that, it’s people like Bachmann who give schizophrenia a bad name.
I wonder if Barak Obama has ever used that word in his entire life.
Yes, like that. I will sign up.
fuck both of her.
How about John McCain?
Will John leave the GOP given the crap the crazies say???…he has no right to talk about tortue because he was actually tortured per FAUX.
Now, that would be a blackeye.
It’s because he Socialist and wants the US as we know it to fail because he hates this country….But I am sure you knew that already.
oh yeah – pretty hard to play a serious game of b-ball without editorial comment….
Nah, she’s just the paranoid delusional sort. Kind of a shame because another persona could only be an improvement on the one she uses.
Yes, anyone who was actually tortured must recuse themselves from any torture debates.
That means that anyone responsible for torture should be required to do so as well, right? Right?
He’d feel differently if he was a U.S. citizen…
Yep…all those hippie parents who wouldn’t settle down; HA doesn’t count.
Please take a bow…what a night, Darlin’
she actually went quite a bit further than that. She outright accused us of waging a liberal bioterror conspiracy.. saying that Carter caused a pandemic and now Obama has again. That woman is a disgrace to th US Congress. In saner times, she’d be censured and then run out of town on a rail.
Too bad the 1976 swine flu outbreak actually happened when Ford was president. She is beyond stupid.
Great fun tonight, Eli. Thanks.
Also we are seeing some serious money for Marcy – let’s keep it going.
her hyperbaric chamber has 3% Carbon Dioxide.
My pleasure. The Dems’ penchant for capitulation and self-sabotage infuriates me beyond words – but I try anyway.
You are so rarely beyond words…we’ll try to bring you back to the lingual world.
Sure, he’s bringing lobby money from the Rethugs, cuz they can’t enact legislation anymore, and the Dem’s can.
Everyone in the Dem Senate and House will get a trickle of this trough.
That’s what Spectre (sp) is bringing. Satchels full of moolah.
Life is simple. *G*
That sounds… kinda kinky, actually.
perhaps cunning?
“if he votes like a Democrat he gets a free pass. If he votes like a Republican he gets a primary challenge.”
There’s a comment just above a bit that spells out what the Dem’s gave him.
And voting like a Dem is NOT a part of the deal. He got a freebie ride into the party, with top seniority.
WHY? Ask yerself why?
Money. He’s bringing in HUGE sources of lobbying money.
C’mon folks . . . . anyone else on that page?
hehehehehe and not a single f-word was used in the sentence
I could probably find time to be “Czar” of that too….
And to help save Reid’s sagging balls – and his buddy Bybee.
And because the Right is worse than us banana republic[ans].
We need a massive letter writing campaign to encourage a strong gutsy Progressive like Chaka Fattah to run. Wharton grad, NO on the war, NO on assault weapons. Fattah would kick the asses of Rendell, Reid Specter and Biden.
Let’s see Obama dump Chaka for Specter. HA!
vaulting ahead?
And it will only happen because they are losing their lobby money and connects.
Switch to the ruling party, bring all that money with ya, and spread it around.
Life is simple.
Absolutely one of my favs ever, from Joe Mac and The Fish.
Nice hit, hoss . . . . *G*
All I’m missin is a flat bed truck parked at UC Berkeley.
Geebuz, another one who knows of the 60’s and the Bay Area? *G*
Yes.
Simple answers to great questions.
And really, our only saving grace, within our own party.
Given, they is all bought and paid for.
Damn politics is dirty business, ain’t it . . .
The view of the quad from the windowpane was at times, clear, at times, melded.
It’s a corrupt system that is incapable of reform from within. People would rather believe in the illusion that “now things will really be different” when in fact it will merely be more of the same.
The bounce back time is very important . . . ya need some time to heal before ya bounce back.
Who’s got time to waste that way no mo, huh . . .
Yeah, but hey, it ain’t TOTALLY over yet . . . . there’s a lot of good fight to focus upon.
Thanks for being one of those who helps us focus, BTW. *G*
Shit, yer killin me . . . you wanna be up forever, or what . . LOLOLOL
Unpredictable, more so than lysergic stuff . . . very, scary, in any form ingested.
I was lucky. I saw some who weren’t . . . they just faded away . . . . over the years . . . .
Sausage.
Splash, splutter, cough, hack, blown keyboard, stained shirt and pants, merlot splattered everywhere. Dang, give out a shout if it’s gonna incite reaction, will ya hoss?
*G*
By Eric Sayt He?
My first thought!
Laboratory science and serious cooking are other endeavors.
Hold up here. I agree that Snarlen isn’t what we want, but let’s not get on someone for their age. That ain’t fair, and it ain’t accurate. Lots of smart people in their eighties.
Right, it works both ways.
What if, and this was a fairly random thought, though Specter did quote Kennedy in his statement earlier…what if he was blackmailed into the move because certain Democrats that might know of his secrets (EM Kennedy, R. Byrd??) decided it was necessary to break the logjam the Repubs seem determined to protract as long as possible??
Reid is hammered rightfully so BUT “Seven minutes later, President Obama reached Specter to tell him, according to the aide, “You have my full support” and that we are “thrilled to have you.”
Against EFCA and Johnsen yet Obama is ‘thrilled’? How long does this guy get a ‘honeymoon’? Day 101?
He he, that’s funny. Person with split personality goes to shrink and the shrink tells her not to fight it since her ‘real’ personality wasn’t all that great. LOL
Arlen Spector is and always has been a absolute stinking piece of shit… I hope the Democrats pay a heavy political price for selling us out! Here’s a quote from Glen Greenwald that puts this into context:
“Arlen Specter is one of the worst, most soul-less, most belief-free individuals in politics. The moment most vividly illustrating what Specter is: prior to the vote on the Military Commissions Act of 2006, he went to the floor of the Senate and said what the bill “seeks to do is set back basic rights by some 900 years” and is “patently unconstitutional on its face.” He then proceeded to vote YES on the bill’s passage.”
Greenwalds entire article: http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/
We need more Senators like Spector who vote for their constituants views over their party’s hard line and we will get closer to this and more moderates in the House as well as the Senate if we get the Gerrymandered congressional districts broken up.
I am a moderate, and just like the founding fathers of this country have a very hard time seeing how ANY political party power is good for America.
However, in support of the Democratic party – Will Rogers’ quote is very much relevant and complementary in my mind.
In response to larue at 138 and following, i was just scrolling thru the comments to see that the jokemeisters were out in force and no one was loving your earlier comments, I wanted to be the first to say that your analysis seems quite apposite and relevant to discussion that would actually go somewhere …
Democrats seem to be okay with Specter, but should true progressives welcome him?
I am a bit concerned that Specter switching into the Democratic primary will prohibit new blood being infused into the Senate. In particular, Congressman, Joe Sestak. He is a military vet, and a true progressive; that combination is hard to find.
See how important organizations rate Specter on his voting history below.
