Over the weekend, dday and other California bloggers made the trek to the California Democratic Party convention in Sacramento, and pushed through a resolution calling for the House to begin an impeachment inquiry into Torture Judge Jay Bybee, who sits on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. dday led the impressive online effort, so we’re helping him out. If you were of a mind to contact the members of the House Judiciary Committee and ask them to take action, you could do it here:
| House Judiciary Committee | |
| John Conyers, Michigan | Howard Berman, California |
| Rick Boucher, Virginia | Jerrold Nadler, New York |
| Robert C. Scott, Virginia | Mel Watt, North Carolina |
| Zoe Lofgren, California | Sheila Jackson-Lee, Texas |
| Maxine Waters, California | Bill Delahunt, Massachusetts |
| Robert Wexler, Florida | Steve Cohen, Tennessee |
| Hank Johnson, Georgia | Pedro Pierluisi, Puerto Rico |
| Luis Gutierrez, Illinois | Brad Sherman, California |
| Tammy Baldwin, Wisconsin | Charles Gonzalez, Texas |
| Anthony Weiner, New York | Adam Schiff, California |
| Linda Sánchez, California | Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Fl |
| Dan Maffei, New York | Lamar S. Smith, Texas |
| Jim Sensenbrenner, Wisconsin | Howard Coble, North Carolina |
| Elton Gallegly, California | Bob Goodlatte, Virginia |
| Dan Lungren, California | Darrell Issa, California |
| Randy Forbes, Virginia | Steve King, Iowa |
| Trent Franks, Arizona | Louie Gohmert, Texas |
| Jim Jordan, Ohio | Ted Poe, Texas |
| Jason Chaffetz, Utah | Tom Rooney, Florida |
| Gregg Harper, Mississippi | |
dday says: "So what do we do now? Members of the California Democratic Party include 34 members of Congress, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and six men and women who sit on the House Judiciary Committee, where an impeachment inquiry would be remanded. They need to hear that their party just recommended that they open an immediate Congressional inquiry into Judge Bybee, with all appropriate remedies and punishments available. In fact, the entire House Judiciary Committee needs to hear this."
Getting the Bybee resolution passed was an amazing effort, and dday richly deserves everyone’s support.

About Firedoglake
Jane,
I have to agree something just doesn’t sit right with us invading countries where human rights are being violated egregiously and then imposing a different type of human rights violation on them, sanctioned by people like Bybee. Pathetic.
He should be disbarred…

My ears were burning.
Too bad the deadenders on the committee are the wingnuts of wingnuts! Lungren, Issa, King, Sensenbrenner, ad nauseam. They’d make a maggot gag!
Will other Democratic parties follow California’s lead?
Congrats, dday
Way to go, dday!
I emailed my guy, Adam Schiff. Thanks Jane for making it so easy. Thank you Adam for being someone I’m proud of.

“The memos on torture represented a deliberate, and internally well-debated, policy decision, made in the proper places — the White House, the intelligence agencies and the Justice Department — by the proper officials.”
I’ve really been thinking a lot about this quote from Broder’s column this weekend. It’s plainly obvious to me that it is wrong on many levels. In light of all the information available, it’s baffling that an ostensibly informed columnist could make this claim. So, why did he write it?
At first, I landed on the Establishment/Village defender theory, but it just didn’t ring true to me in this case. He could easily defend against prosecutions without making this claim. Many others have. This is just too easy to refute. It’s just not credible. If his goal were just to shape opinion against prosecutions, why would he undermine his whole argument with this obvious falsehood. I just couldn’t get my head around it.
Then DailyKos linked to Gerson’s piece in the “Daily Pundit Roundup.” Again, just unbelievable. The moralist was making the case that after reading the memos he was convinced that the decisions reflected sound, pragmatic and moral judgment and avoided moral relativism. I immediately hit the link and read the column though I detest Gerson. I had the same reaction I had when I read Broder’s column and the same reaction I had to Hiatt’s editorial touting the need for “unflinching” advice. I wanted to post online and reveal their corrupt idiocy and hypocrisy.
Then, it dawned on me that my reaction could explain why the WaPo editorialists were in lockstep on this issue (Hiatt on Friday, Broder over the weekend and Gerson on Monday). By making these outrageous claims they are very predictably driving liberal bloggers and readers crazy…and it’s good for them.
Broder’s column has over 1100 comments, a large majority of them rebuking him. Same for the Hiatt Editorial where he hosted a “debate the editorial” comments section. After Broder’s column posted, I repeatedly returned to Greenwald anticipating the rich rhetoric of rebuke.
Seems to me these guys are playing us. They are hitting our hot buttons on purpose and what they get is the rich life’s blood of traffic. I’ll bet you Hiatt gets hourly stats on traffic streaming in from HuffPo, Salon and DailyKos after a particularly noxious OpEd or after a Greenwald or Digby takedown.
With subscription down, website traffic is is critical for WaPo. By infuriating us (quite predictably), they are earning more advertising dollars and seeming more relevant.
I propose that we all ignore them. Do not write about them. Do not link to them. Do not demolish their arguments. Do not post in their comments. Starve them.
Currently, we’re simply rewarding their idiocy and I think they know it.
