my theory is that they always need one external/alien enemy to hate – Muslims, Mexicans, Communists, Nazis, Anarchists, Papists, Chinese immigrants, Irish immigrants, etc., going back in history, but this enemy changes over time. All that hatred is rooted in fear, so it is no coincidence that wingnuts comprise the Republican base since exploiting irrational fear has been the solitary plank in their party platform for many years now.

I think it’s more of a hierarchy of Others. Muslims are worse than gays, gays are worse than minorities and women, and so on. Not sure whether they hate women or minorities more, or whether they hate gays more than immigrants.

I hate to admit it, but I’m descended from a long line of rethug haters and grew up surrounded by them. I think I can fairly say that gays, Blacks, and (secretly) women are the magic trinity (at least for American rethugs) ;P

You’re probably right, they mainly hate women and minorities who don’t “know their place,” meaning that they are insufficiently deferential to their white male superiors. In their weltanschauung there IS no proper place or attitude for gays so they hate them without exception.

I have found over the years it takes conservatives a lot longer than the rest of us to catch on.
Right now they are being led to believe that the reason they were trounced in the last two elections is because they are not appealing to a small enough segment of the voters, so the push is on to appeal to an even smaller segment of the voting population who reflect their “core values.”
The results are predictable…
