Poor Jane Harman. I feel her pain:
Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) raised the possibility today that more members of Congress could have been wiretapped by the NSA or FBI.
Defending herself against reports that she was caught on tape offering to intervene in the espionage-related case of two former employees of the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Harman said other members are worried that they were taped as well.
"And let’s see who else was wiretapped," Harman told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. "I mean lots of members of Congress talk to advocacy organizations. My phone is ringing off the hook in my office from worried members who are asking whether I think it could have happened to them. I think this is an abuse of power, Wolf."
Lordy, that’s horrible. Who could ever have imagined that anyone with the ability to spy on people without consequence would do so with members of Congress? Well, anybody who ever read the Church Committee report, but let’s not quibble.
It’s understandable that ordinary Americans like Harman and other members of Congress would be horrified and want an immediate investigation, which is actually what happened when the ACLU and the EFF filed suit and demonstrated that millions of innocent Americans had been the victims of illegal surveillance. But Jane Harman thought that their right to know was trumped by the demands of national security, and voted to give retroactive immunity to the telecoms.
I may be late to the party here, but I. . . I think she may have been right. I’m worried that such a program might be essential to national security, and that its disclosure might damage critical intelligence capabilities. After all, the program under which Harman was spied upon was legal and necessary, as opposed to the people in the ACLU and EFF cases, who were the victims of illegal surveillance. I’m — well, I’m afraid that if we start looking too closely at these things, gosh darn it, the terrorists are gonna know what we’re up to, and then they win.
I know because a wise woman once said so herself:
"You should not be talking about that here," she scolded me in a whisper. "They don’t even know about that," she said, gesturing to her aides, who were now looking on at the conversation with obvious befuddlement. "The Times did the right thing by not publishing that story," she continued. I wanted to understand her position. What intelligence capabilities would be lost by informing the public about something the terrorists already knew — namely, that the government was listening to them? I asked her. Harman wouldn’t bite. "This is a valuable program, and it would be compromised,’ she said. I tried to get into some of the details of the program and get a better understanding of why the administration asserted that it couldn’t be operated within the confines of the courts. Harman wouldn’t go there either. "This is a valuable program," she repeated.
We have ever so many problems before us right now. Why do we want to look back in anger and retribution? As Glenn Greenwald says, the last thing we want to do is look shrill and unhinged. Besides, we might start wondering what the world would look like today if people on the Intelligence Committee hadn’t abused their positions and lobbied the New York Times to spike the wiretapping story before the 2004 election, citing "national security."
I mean, do we really want to go there?

Hey Jane H., why are you talking to yourself?
HA HA!

Jane Harman pwn3d. Also.
Oh fer chrissakes. Does anyone really think that there is a single secure line in the Capitol Building?
I mean, do we really want to go there?
Anybody got Peggy Noonan’s number?
Oh what a tangled web we weave ….
Jane Hamsher once furrowed her brow and asked the meaning of the term “hoisted by one’s own petard.”
And yet she keeps providing these brilliant examples.
pwn3d
Would you kindly explain what this means. I’ve seen it, but I don’t get it. Thanks.
“I mean, do we really want to go there?”
Harman went there a long time ago, IMO. I just don’t understand why a woman who represents the ultra-liberal beach communities of LA is allowed by her constituents to keep her job after claiming, as she has, that she is the best Republican in the Democratic Party. There’s a disconnect here for me.
Jane Harman hoisted by her own Petard and apparently blackmailed by Gonzo I wonder if Jane will flip on Gonzo?
These people deserve whatever they get x 10.
yea, she is a teabag hag.

If anyone on capital hill doesn’t think every word they utter or write isn’t being collected they are insane. Not that ever word is but every word might be.
That this Harmon had a leadership position in the congress has always been prime evidence of how bankrupt the Democratic party is. Which in turn explains why the congress itself is a sick, pathetic, powerless joke. It cannot be saved. Hope is not a strategy.
I know, in an hour or two most will hope again. I wonder what the common hopes will be when the economy is 50% smaller in a few years.
If this is how Bush treats Blue Dogs by spying on them and blackmailing them well then just what is the point of being a Blue Dog?
Where are the perks of membership what did the Blue Dogs get for being Bush’s lackey’s?
No, Harman wasn’t blackmailed by Bertie Walnuts, she was protected by him. She ran defense very early on in the illegal wiretapping program and Gonzo took note. When he saw an investigation coming down on his Joe Lieberman with tits, he quashed it to keep her unsullied for future use.
Allegedly.
Any investigation to clear Jane would have to examine the Gonzo blackmail claim.
Jane wants the powers that be to help her or else she will call for an investigation.
This should be interesting nobody on the GOP side wants this issue brought up.
the main perk is probably the abundant campaign contributions (and luxurious junkets) from the likes of AIG, Bank of America and Citicorp.
Your right its still illegal though any investigation of Jane to clear her gives us Gonzo.
Any investigation to see who else was spied on puts the Telecom immunity issue back into the press.
The GOP wants this issue to go away.
So I at least am happy:)
They can’t help her now. I wonder what does it take to lose your seat in the House? Could this scandal rise to that level? Should we be looking at a replacement for her?
Remember, if you aren’t doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about.
Seriously, I have no sympathy for Harman. She wanted to give the president wiretapping powers with no oversight. It’s some sort of Greek tragedy (or is it a comedy?) that she is now a victim of it. She sold out her party, and some would say her country, for a government that would never treat her as one of them. Not as adept at the art of politics as she thought, it seems.
Jane, both you and Glenn are having way too much fun with this.
And we love it! *g*
Old home days around here.

And now that you understand the details Ms. Harman, the only thing left would be resignation. She sure changed her story quickly today? From, “I want to see those tapes” to “everyone does it”.
Harmon’s whining is all for show and will quickly subside.
She let herself be used by the Bushies.
She knows what she said in her call.
She has no good name to clear, she just wants to be able later to say that she denied it, and count on the American lack of an attention span to save her.
Me? I like the idea of doing a thorough investigation of her, keeping illegal wiretapping front and center, and messing with a Blue Dog, all at the same time.
Karma may be slow, but the Justice it brings is SWEET!
The flavor of the irony, I haven’t quite figured out yet. Bitter, savory?
Anyway a lesson for torture apologists. Get on the right side of right because if you don’t, this karmatic destiny is yours. Also.
Harmon doesn’t have to worry about “retribution.” If she’s found guilty, POTUS can pardon her or vacate her sentence.
Did anyone notice that Dick Cheney has begun to gasp like Darth Vader?

huh – change the gender references, and you’re talking about Joe Lieberman.
Thanks, Mike. I always forget about that dictionary.
Polecats from the same litter.
Rightards may want to revisit the power it gave to gummit now that it is in Democratic hands. Recent Homeland Security reports warning of “right wing extremist groups” have caused much wailing and gnashing of teeth. Bush spied on the Amish, Catholics, peace protesters, PETA and environmental groups. Now those in the right are more nervous than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
Jeebus, a top terrorist cheerleader in bed with the Gonzolabad.
And her truth was so truthful when she was young and dumb.
Well, back to the coverups.

I could not agree more!
By the way, has anyone heard a peep about what is going on with the supposed testimony of Rove, Miers and Card ?
Why would Obama do that what has Jane done for him?
Rupert gave her cash? Fox News Rupert? This could not have happened to a more deserving Blue Dog! I wonder how Fox News is covering this story?
I bet they don’t mention their boss giving her cash.
Eli is upstairs!
Republican Bigotry Roundup
Oilfieldguy!
heh, I remember that; and yes she does.
Zelikow, you Bastard!
Jane Harman, just another oligarch that deserves to be thrown on the trash heap of history. Putting the interests of the oligarchy and a foreign power before her constituents.
Jane..I am not sure that all of you should be avoiding digg. Maybe the opposite?

” Over the last few months, it looks like the wingnuts have undertaken a specific and systematic effort to try and downrate items that don’t reflect well on them at places like REDDIT and DIGG.
Of course, lots of recommendations on those two sites result in thousands — if not hundreds of thousands — of more eyeballs to the various stories we run here at The BRAD BLOG — stories which are often not seen anywhere else in the media, even in the Progressive Blogosphere for that matter!
So your REDDITs and DIGGs actually do matter quite a bit, particular now since the wingnuts seem to have begun their downrating campaign. Click here to see the amazing number of DOWN votes at REDDIT, for example, for last night’s “Franken Isn’t ‘Leading’; He Won and Coleman Lost” story. Without all that downrating, the story would easily have made it to the front page of REDDIT for a long while, and therefore been propagated across dozens of other key sites on the net as well. “

Jane H goes to jail, I don’t care they are but break the law bye-bye.
Poor Jane Harmon!
In order to clear her name, that investigation that Gonzo quashed obviously needs to go forward!
“Time to Look Forward, Not Backward in Anger and Retribution”
great title jane…
since we’ve been shown certain laws only apply to certain people – i guess the same goes for being selective about whats worthy of being looked back upon eh?
“Zelikow, you Bastard!”
HA!
my comment from jane’s earlier thread about joe klein

phillip zelikow weighs in on teh torture memos in a nyt article (p2).
all i can muster is a pathetic chuckle….. can anyone spell h-y-p-o-c-r-i-t-e
“In an April lecture, Philip D. Zelikow, the former adviser to Ms. Rice, said it was a grave mistake to delegate to attorneys decisions on the moral question of how prisoners should be treated.
Mr. Zelikow, who reviewed the C.I.A. detention program as the executive director of the Sept. 11 commission, said the “cool, carefully considered, methodical, prolonged and repeated subjection of captives to physical torment, and the accompanying psychological terror, is immoral.”

BlueButterfly can you vote down a story at Digg? I never have or wanted to I mean whats the point you just stop reading a bad story.
Jane,
Thanks for this excellent bit of snark, of the dry wit kind.
I enjoyed it a lot!
Bob in HI
Beautiful Jane: you connect that long line of dots that extends into the horizon.
AND show how corrupt the system is to ignore all interests that are not of the oligarchs for the oligarchs until they are of the oligarchs and for the oligarchs.
And there’s no downside to this one … losing Harmon works for me. Exposing ANY part of this sordid story works for me.
A good day for us!
Same here. Thanks, Jane!
Silly Harman! Listen to her –wanting the government to treat her fair and square. Why can’t she just hang tight and trust the government? If it tells us Harman is guilty, then she’s guilty guilty guilty!
No habeus. No judicial review. No chance to rebut secret proof of her guilt. Just trust the government, Jane!
Over the last 8 years our Congress have taught us to trust the Unitary Executive. Only He knows how to protect we the little people. Isn’t it true the Bill of Rights was just a draft? a mere policy paper to be debated and rewritten without 2/3 majority vote?
If it comes to it, I hope our new Dear Leader Obama thinks to steer her case out of the courts, steer it clear of any and all judicial review. Yes, we’re at war. We’re at War with an Evil Enemy, so we don’t have time for guilty people to spin their tales in court and waste our resources.
Plus, what if Israel helped with the wiretaps? We don’t need a public airing of this fact in court. That is inappropriate, because it would reveal sensitive sources & methods and harm business and/or sensitive diplomatic relationships. State secrets, I say.
It’s really hard to think of these craven, spineless, unprincipled dolts as any better than the Republicans. Seriously, why do we Dems elect these POS’s as “representatives”?
and no Habeas corpus either!
Yep.
When’s everyone gonna start focusing on the fact that the 1% own it all, that both houses of Congress ARE the 1% and are doing the 1%’s biddngs?
A flush of this entrenched system would require an effort greater than Hercules diverting the river to flush the stables.
It’s entrenched, they are all guilty, and they will all stand together as they always have. Obama, The Senate, The House, Obama’s admin, DOJ, DOD, all the Cabinets, etc. ad nauseum.
Does anyone really see a way out of this short of some huge upheaval? Like, mama nature, or such?
Do any of you folks really think Obama is the way out of this mess, and all that’s required is that we MAKE him do it? You think the system will LET him, or anyone else, or us, change it?
I’m lookin for hope here . . . anyone? Bueller?
Solid answers only please, is there a chance in hell of getting any changes to benefit the masses given what we’re dealing with?
Now THIS is subversive information to be acted on . . . .
The Repubs bein the subversive one’s.
Blockin the com channels, once again.
The one’s they don’t own, yet.
Hence, look for any and all legislations to control the toobz.
Oh, You Know, Like, THIS Shit From Jay Rockefeller
Just sayin . . . (spits)
That numbers is surely unlisted. Just keep walking.
I guess you didn’t know she planned to retire and then changed her mind. Maybe after this she will change it again and retire for good.
Just think of all those areospace jobs that will be lost if we are not trying to blow up the
caged ratsworld. Jane has to watch out for her constituents: Boeing/McDonnell/Douglas/Lockheed/Military. I mean, lets be serious: our congress people believe that they have to do whatever they must to bring as many dollars as possible to their district, regardless of how any funds are actually distributed. Jane needed Bush and Cheney as much as they needed her.I wonder who will actually come to her defense. I bet Karl Rove is chuckling right now.
Hope may not be a strategy but it is necessary if we are to think in terms of alternatives. Do you have any strategies? I have a few which I’ve obliquely suggested but got no takers.
