Watching this clip of the Villagers discussing torture is, well, torture.
Sam Donaldson comes the closest to making any sense at all, but even he has trouble stating the issue succintly: we’re a nation of laws. Period.
Meanwhile, George Will wrings his hands about "the cost" of letting "the bad guys" know what "techniques" we can use on them (you mean criminals willing to blow themselves up to kill unarmed civilians have an advantage in a free and open society? who knew?!), and how "intelligent people of good will" believe the President of the United States can do whatever he wants to "defend the country."
Bizarre.
But easily the most vapid and annoying performance was, of course, Nooners:
It’s hard for me to look at a great nation issuing these documents and sending them out to the world and thinking, oh, much good will come of that.
Got that? Nooners doesn’t have a problem with the brutal, illegal, un-American acts of torture committed under Bush/Cheney. She’s just worried about the bad PR.
Memo to Nooners: great nations don’t torture. It’s stuff of petty dictatorships. And memo to Will: those pesky laws that give the "bad guys" such an unfair advantage and restrain the actions of the chief executive are not an annoyance — they’re who we are. They are what make us great.
These wingers say they love this country but they don’t possess even a rudimentary understanding of what makes it so special.

About Firedoglake
Peggy Noonan is the…
FreedumbSkank.
Ronnie Raygun would be so proud.
I would love to see the magic dolphin lady retire.
Dugg.
And stripped of that which makes us great, the elite prattling is revealed for what it is: empty justification for their own dominance of the student council.
Great critique of the pundit kush. Thanks.
Noonan is just an old southern belle (even though she is not southern). Appearances are more important than reality. You can be sweet to the maid that works for you but know full well her children don’t have enough to eat.
I hope she hasn’t raised any children.
It’s comforting to know that through all of the turmoil, illegalities, war crimes, and patent stupidity since Reagan shrank the presidency, there’s still Nooner- deliberately and completely ignorant and wishing that you were too- pining for a time that never was, fearing for an america that never will be, she marches on- one silly foot before the other.
Only a matter of time–whether in Asia,Central or South America–one or more Americans will get swept up,caught or be in middle of a situation gone very awry and once captured may/will be totured for any number of similar reasons WashingtonDC is now rolling out.
Naturally WashingtonDC and the Villagers who as shown above have threaded several needles and counted angels on pinheads for why USA can and should and would do torture will suddenly be aghast that Americans are being tortured which they will quickly and in a very linear fashion point out is against Geneva Conventions and whatever other laws they can flip flop on.
How these people get on American TV clearly has very little to do with the quality of analysis they are capable of and much more to do with who can be a good parrot.
It was painful to watch the Sunday AM “week in review and lets talk about it” TV shows today in regards to the tortured reasons and comments both hosts and “guests” were so ignorantly spouting and blurting.
The craven strategies of reasoning being presented gave real cause for one to want to move to New Zealand and disavow this crowd of American misfits and panderers.
The southern belle is from New York City and quite Irish:
Noonan married Richard W. Rahn, who was then chief economist at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, in 1985. They lived in Great Falls, Virginia. Their son Will Rahn was born in 1987.[2]
Noonan and her husband were divorced after five years of marriage. In 1989 she returned with her son to her native New York. In 2004, according to an interview with Crisis Magazine, she lived in a brownstone in Brooklyn Heights with her son, who attended the Saint Ann’s School (New York City) nearby. [3]
Noonan currently lives in New York City.[4]
It is a great mystery how the Republics get people who do not benefit from Republic rule to vote for Republic candidates by continually using the same tired social issues over and over. Those voters never notice that the Republics never do anything about those issues except talk.
George Will wrings his hands about “the cost” of letting “the bad guys” know what “techniques” we can use on them
As already pointed out on many blogs, the “techniques” are not being used anymore so from that aspect, it doesn’t matter. The only possible reason that these twits may have for objecting is that knowing the kind of sickness that the US has been exhibiting will be an effective recruitment point for al Qaeda. But that isn’t valid either because the “techniques” were already in the public sphere from numerous sources including released victims, disgusted torturers, and the Red Cross report.
Will also comes in with “how “intelligent people of good will” believe the President of the United States can do whatever he wants to “defend the country.”
I had that same question years ago when we invaded Iraq, when the illegal wiretapping was exposed, when Bush shut down habeas corpus, when Bush authorized rendition and black sites, and many other occasions.
For some reason I mixed her up with Cokie Roberts. Go figure.
These Sunday panels scare me. Why? This is what passes for the best and brightest in Oz.
Over at Columbia Journalism Review, Charles Kaiser skewers “beltway journalism”
Beltway Journalism, “Swallowed by an Hourglass”
This Week this morning is exactly what the CJR piece describes. And it is disgusting. Sam Donaldson did OK, the rest are a waste of airtime.
Inbreeding
There is a paucity of brilliance on the current scene. It’s hard to look clever when your country is goin down the toilet in a final swirl.
This is disgusting. How elitist for the NY times to even consider this as somehow “unfair”. Where are they to defend the poor who pay upwards of 17% of their already meager incomes in taxes? The poor who do not use our infrastructures as much, who cannot even afford their own homes much less decent food for themselves and their children! When are these people going to get the hint that paying taxes is patriotic and to not pay their fair share is downright unAmerican??? Why don’t THE RICH pay 17% of their incomes??? At least they would have enough left over to live on, which you cannot say for the poor.
Gawd!

The Villagers also overlook the fact that one of the things that makes America great is our willingness to hang the dirty laundry out there for all to see.
Torture is the perfect symbol for the Bush/Chaney ‘banana style republic’. Torture is their trademark. Other despot accumulations include black CIA ops and crony capitalism and imbeded corruption.
Another absurd aspect of the “You can’t let the terrorists known how we torture!” claptrap is that even if AQ knew how we tortured it didn’t matter. You can’t train away suffocation, the gag reflex and CO2 saturation. They are physical effects produced no matter how what you do. Knowing it’s coming doesn’t help you.
she pulled this same tsk-tsk sh* when Mark Felt outed himself as Deep Throat – “opening old fissures” doncha know
and p.s. – she has never opened that yap about atrocities in Central America, including the kidnapping, rape, torture, and murder of nuns and lay workers – but hey, the Pope is groovy ain’t he, Peggers ?
Cokie, Cokie, Cokie. You are the worst of the lot because you pretend you are civilized. But Cokie, you are a neo-con thug.
You admit that the destruction of CIA evidence of torture is a good thing to you.
“It was the wrong thing to do but I am really glad they did it.”
But I think Cokie, that you enjoy the rough stuff.
One would think that getting the word out that the US tortures would serve to make those captured more likely to talk, not less. This is, of course, all bullshit anyway. What these goopers are really saying is that it’s unamerican to make public documents that embarass the country to the world at large.
Georgie Staph: “There are different kinds of accountability.” Villager Law, and law for the little people.
I hope nothing bad ever happens to Peggy Noonan, because if something ever does, I will be in the vanguard of those encouraging her to “just keep walking!” What an outrageous tool she is!
And these people cast themselves as Law-and-Order types. Never in a million years!
“Neo-con thug” is a euphemism. Godwin’s Law is dead, any American who would rationalize torture is nothing less than a neo-Nazi.
AARRGGHH! Sorry about that …I thought I was on the article for the NY Times.
Still Noonan IS torture, though I do not want to make light of the subject. I wonder how this lush feel about being a right wing tool and prostitute for torturers. Has she no shame?

During Vietnam, we had a “secret” bombing campaign in Cambodia. It was secret from only the American people. Surely the folks in Cambodia knew they were getting bombed. Same thing here. All this stuff has been in the public domain heretofore and in any event, unless we executed all our prisoners so they wouldn’t talk, they knew they were getting tortured and would tell about it. It is silly what the Republicans are talking about today and have you noticed they are all on the same page?
As far as the CIA chiefs, they are subject to going to jail for war crimes so they will claim that torture works and the memos shouldn’t have been released. Just like always, the repugs won’t take any responsibility. Peggy Noonan doesn’t get it. She’s good, but she’s not good for this country. Never was.
Well Peggy “gets it”. All of her training and experience tells her that she will never lose money betting on the gullibility of the american people- so she’s “All In”. She doesn’t actually believe a word she says- and even her tone of voice is a frock put on for a special occaision.
I think what bothers me the most is that the dimwit rethugs took what was basically the SERE(Survival-Evasion-Resistance-Escape)program-I underwent SERE training in 1969 prior to my deployment to Vietnam due to my security clearance-which was set up in response to what the North Koreans did to our guys during the Korean war and turned it around again to pretty much copy what the NKs did 50+ years ago. And the idiots in the CIA-I had interactions with these idiots for over 18 years when working for the FedGov so I believe that I am correct in calling them idiots,I think that they believed their press and thought that they were all really James Bond-actually thought that this kind of crap would work. Actually, different kinds of torture do work on people, say if you heard a woman screaming and were told it was your wife and that your children were next, would you talk? If you were not threatened yourself but were told that an innocent person that you did not know would be tortured unless you talked, would you? There are many ways to make a person talk. The USSR stopped physical torture and went to psychological torture in the late 50s early 60s and found it worked much better. Communist China and North Korea did the same(so we were doing things based on what NK did back in the early 50s that even they had given up as not working the way they wanted, those who we placed in power were idiots who watched to much TV) Now my bosses back in the day always told us-briefings-that everyone breaks when the right pressure is applied. Also, one size(torture) does not fit all. They waterboarded a guy 183 times? Really? And he either knew nothing(the likely reason) or else he was a fanatic of the first water. At any rate, we were told that if captured we would tell everything we knew, so, we were told that we might just as well save ourselves lots of pain and just tell what we knew-what we knew would change the day that we were caught, so no harm, no foul.
However, my point is that it is well understood that people who are tortured will say anything to make it stop-and SERE training reenforced that(SERE training was changed sometime in the 80s due to having had at least 1 or 2 people(pilots) dying on them)so whatever information is given is useless, unless that information comes out within about 24 hours of capture. So the CIA was torturing people for what exactly? After 5-6 years they most certainly could not get any intel that was any good now could they? I understand that all this torture BS kept many people running all over the world attempting to confirm BS. thousands of man hours that could have been better spent using interrogation techniques that have proven sucessful for over 50 years. That is what happens when you put armchair commandos in charge of anything. These dimwits still use the TV show 24 as an example to prove that torture works. Or the nuclear device that will go off in 24(note how clever that is, sneaking the TV program title in) hours. All BS, but is goes over great with the sheeple.
What in the f**k has our country sunk to? We have a major political party not only using torture but talking about it. We have a dem prez and congress who are apparently scared to death that if they actually put these torturers on trial that they will piss off the sheeple and lose their jobs. I am not sure that I want moral cowards running the country. Except the choice seems to be moral coward or torturer. Is that it? We don’t want to piss off the rethug machine or the MSM which backs them up? Well, shit.
Ive just returned to the page. Not to let up on Noonan, but it is not clear to me why she is being hit here so much harder than Will. His assertion about intelligent people and the US President doing whatever he wants is not only bizarre, it is genuinely psychotic. Not only is it an assertion that is contrary to law, we have considerable evidence that “doing” maybe = to dictatorial and certainly not in the best interest of the country. He has gone off the rails.
Will is annoying- Noonan is insufferable.
Doesn’t their Bible say something about this.
John 8:32 “And you will know truth and the truth shall set you free.”
Guess their faith only applies when convenient.
George Will and Peggy Noonan are a waste of perfectly good molecules.
We would do well to eliminate the mysteries that Noonan and her ilk would offer us. The mystery the villagers do provide this country that we would do well to consider and act upon is this: after promoting so much bias, willful ignorance, deception, mis-representation, and hubris so that so ill serve a functioning democracy, why does anyone accord them a platform for attention?
This mystery, like all mysteries, might be resolved with a simple acknowledgment of the truth. The villagers have given us more than enough evidence…
Interesting how the argument of “deterrence” does not apply here.
Deterrence for nuclear war. Death penalty deterrence. But not torture.
These people love them some “deterrence.” Hmph.
Don’t know….maybe it is really a “draw” in their both being divorced from reality…yep, a bit scary.

Every time I watch these old farts on This Week I can practically smell the Ben-Gay wafting thru the toob.
Peggy, Shouldn’t Newt Gingrich and republicans have left that mysterious stain on that dress affiliated with Clinton to the secret presidential scrolls. Did we really have to go through that Peggy?
And Peggy, I can call you Peggy can’t I?
Do you really feel better with out of sight out of mind?
After all, it is realy harmless to make a suspect talk about something you are not so sure he knows anything about. By finding their 5 year old child and taking a hammer to his testicles in front of the suspect you want information from that your not quite certain he has.
No of this is really required citizenship to address on the moral side of what our Gov’t leaders do in our name when they tell us they are not torturing. When accused. And as long as it is not in the citizens public eye it is fine. That a lawyer down mid way in the justice Dept can write laws this nation is supposed to abide by?
Really, Mrs Noonan?
Oh THANK YOU 707!!! perfect. I shall chuckle through the day instead of ranting.
I can’t stand to listen to those clowns, and I was trying to summon the strength to listen to the clip. Now I shant, for it is thus, as you say it. Done. Set aside to mold per usual.
Bravo to you, and deep thanks, heh heh. ;->
I fergit. Whut planet IS Peggy from? I get a reading of “no known life form” every time I tap on it.
