John, on the other hand, wrote after it was history. So the threat of destroying the nation rather than “one man” was a palpably real, heart-rending choice, one not available to the real Jerusalem.</p> <p>Mr. Ashcroft’s actions didn’t lead to the physical destruction of his God. They did enable the partial destruction of his legal temple and, arguably, his soul. Mr. Ashcroft has a choice not open to Jacob Marley.
