One of the factors that frequently limits the value of demonstrations in the modern era is that no matter how many people you pull together, if the media decides it’s not going to cover something, the impact is minimal. The teabagger demonstrations were rather small relative to the hype and free media time lavished on them — Nate Silver estimates that across the country there were 250,000 people attending, with the largest being 7,000. By way of comparison, many demonstrations for immigration reform in the spring of 2006 had more than 300,000 people at a single event.
That probably wouldn’t have been a problem for the teabaggers — right-wing robber barons with professional PR outfits had a long reach into the media, and on an otherwise quiet day, there would have been significant coverage. But as Cillizza notes, nobody factored in the Susan Boyle effect — a genuine populist phenomenon. I watch a lot of cable news, and it was in heavy rotation all day long. It was all anyone could talk about, and rightfully so. I must’ve watched it 5 or 6 times myself. How can you not? Despite the petty, mean putdowns by the narcissistic asshole judges (or perhaps because of them), it’s impossible not to tear up as you watch her walk on to the stage and take her best shot at the unlikely dream she never gave up on. It’s up to 12 million views now.
So bottom line — nobody cares, Karl. Susan Boyle kicked your ass, too.

About Firedoglake
Jane, yes Susan did kick his ass. And you know why–she was utterly and completely genuine. From her heart and soul. She is what she is. She was wonderful and she made me cry. I watched her at least three times (before the TV replays) and all I could think of was her courage to do that, of all things. I think my dreams are too small.
Kinda reminds ya of the last great President giving his farewell speech and some guy named Sullenburger just goes and sullies the day, now don’t it?
Susan Boyle is my hero(ine).
What a testimony to the triumph of the human spirit.
I am still verklempt!
Good post, J.
Just a note. By one teabagger estimate there were 3,000 people at the party yesterday here in the City Beautiful. Gorgeous day. When the year is over it’ll be in the top 5 or 10. Anyways, that was a teabagger estimate, not a CBPD estimate. March 22 they had a tea party here. Got 4,000 people. So they actually got a smaller crowd – on a perfect day – tahn a little over 2 weks ago. Now they might say “Well, there were smaller local rallies and if you add them up, the total will be more.” Maybe, maybe not. I have doubts. Point is, after having this hawked by FOX 24/7, there was no uptick in attndance. I’m not impressed. They had been planning more of these but i expect in teh future it’s going to be smaller and smaller with only the looniest loons turning out.
“The fear of future federal tax hikes is fueling the tea-party movement.”
The GOP has become the party of made-up, imaginary issues. Impending tax hikes, fairness doctrine, and so on. The real issues like illegal wiretapping, economic disaster, energy, global warming, and on and on get nary a glance.
I wonder why that is, Karl? Karl?
Boyle offered us a true moment of beauty and clarity. Unlike the idiots who prattle on in print and on the teevee about “grassroots” douchebaggery.
She is the winner of the week in every category.
My typing really blows. Sorry.
Boyled teabaggers.
Yes, the judges are meant to be ########. To their credit, at least two of them owned up to it. One called Susan’s performance a “wake up call” to not so easily dismiss a person such as her. I particularly loved the first judge swallowing hard to contain himself, he was so moved.
I was also quite resentful of how Fox wingnuts are preempting “grassroots” with yet more of their artifice.
I Dreamed A Dream lyrics
There was a time, when men were kind
And their voices were soft
And their words were inviting
There was a time, when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time it all went wrong
I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high and life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted
But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they turn your hope apart
As they turn your dreams to shame
He slept a summer by my side
He filled my dreams with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came
And still I dream he’d come to me
That we would live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather
I had a dream my life would be
So different from the hell I’m living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed
Oh yeah. The teabagginbg didn’t even make the A section of the local paper (the March 22 teabagging was front page stuff). you need to go through 2 limnks to get to it on the website.
People have to stop putting that link in front of me. I am powerless before it.
And here I thought I was a sap for tearing up when Susan Boyle sang.
During the barricade days at BayWalk in St Pete we had more protesters than the DC teabaggers.
No dream is too small.
I don’t begrudge the teabaggers their media coverage or whatever success they had yesterday. The wingers don’t do protest marches as often (or as well!) as progressives, so when they do have an event the media should cover it.
The question is, why does the media dismiss progressive events that draw huge crowds and have enormous popular support?
Start small with the dream you have, and grow it over the years.
Because Fox leads and the others fall in line.
So am I. That was amazingly moving.
Susan Boyle was wonderful. I have watched it 4 times and still get goosebumps. The shock on Simon’s face was worth a million. I wish her every success and I will buy her CDs.
The teabaggers can’t compete with that.
Still smiling and crying over Susan Boyle’s performance.
Misty didn’t cover it for me dosido.
Full on fire hydrant is more like it. Thanks for your Oxdown.
This video is so awesome…I love a good cry…what a voice..
Oh..and some breaking news: Obama to release the memos…
http://www.dailykos.com/storyo…..BUPDATE%5D
With the names of the prisoners and the methods used redacted.
“Nate Silver estimates that across the country there were 250,000 people attending, with the largest being 7,000. By way of comparison, many demonstrations for immigration reform in the spring of 2006 had more than 300,000 people at a single event.”
I have seen Ms. Boyles wonderful performance and am glad 12 M views have occurred BUT when I compare the turnout for ‘anewwayforward’ on April 11th to the teabag demo’s, one has to pause and reflect on the last stanza of the song.
Here’s what happened in San Diego,CA as reported by the local newspaper.
We can ‘bash’ all we want BUT until we can ‘rally’ like the teabaggers AND realize the commonality of grievances amongst the population and combat the demogogues effectively, the ‘living hell’ will continue.
When I read about 1500 Indian farmers committing suicide, it’s tough to be cheered even with Ms. Boyle’s outstanding performance.
Blue Texan’s new post is ready for your pleasure: “Wannabes: Teabaggers Draw Less Than Half of ‘08 Spice Girls Reunion Tour”
From the Dkos “I don’t want to jump the gun on what will or won’t be released, but I think the overall point the President might be trying to make is that “There have been dark moments in the past. Here is an idea of what happened. Here is how torture was justified through legal mumbojumbo. We won’t pursue these practices anymore. And now we must move forward.”
I would make a bet that Obama is NOT going to prosecute anyone nor will he reveal every single detail about what happened.”
So crimes were committed and Obama wants to ‘move forward’; reminds me of the Clash song lyric “Imagine if all the boys in jail
Could get out now together
What do you think they want to say to us
While we were being clever”
From Bible Spice, to McGramps coming to our economic rescue during his campaign, to Minn. Normie’s doomed Senate contest, to their ‘Budget Without Numbers’ routine, all Republicans know these days is failure.
So, grasping at anything, it’s always easy to get attention railing against and about taxes, never mind that (as Gibbs pointed out) the largest tax cut in history was just passed by Democrats.
Reality has no place in their party, just delusion and greedy self interest.
Not just 12 million views on YouTube. A friend e-mailed me a link earlier this morning to another version on YouTube that has over 800,000 views.
Yeah, it’s interesting…Obama’s MO seems to be to ignore the subject personally but perhaps, just perhaps, have it pursued behind the scenes and come out in some other way down the line where his connection to supporting investigating something has some personal distance….the States Secret stuff left me pretty chilled though…my personal jury is out on this administration. I just dunno.
Wow, just wow. Thanks so much for posting that. It was the high point of my week so far.
Am I the only one who thought the Boyle spectacle was just another piece of pre-cooked Fox crapola?
She was nothing short of wonderful. I cry every single time that I watch this. God bless her.
I would really love to hear her sing Another Winter in a Summer Town from Grey Gardens. Wow.
One little leaf adrift in the breeze, refuses to fall from the sky,
Blown by the wind, it clings to the tree, unwilling to wither and die
Here’s to you, Susan. Wishing you success and happiness in the future.
Thank you for introducing me to Susan Boyle. How can I not pursue my own dreams after seeing her. It brought tears to my eyes.
The judges, the staging, everything around the production of the show — yes. Absolute crap. Those judges knew exactly what was coming and their hokey responses put their truly terrible acting skills on display.
But you can’t change the fact that the lady got her shot on the world stage, and with a voice like that, there’s no doubt it was her dream. And she delivered.
Wow. I guess I haven’t been watching TV. I’m kind of reeling right now, that was so awesome.
And it’s her voice, unsweetened and undubbed — the slight West Lothian lilt is still there. Tremendous range, power and grace, with no strain at all on the topmost notes. Think of the great British folk singers — Julie Driscoll, Sandy Denny (though Boyle’s voice is a balance between Driscoll’s raw power and Denny’s delicacy).
And really, even if Simon et al knew in advance of her quality, that little bit of stage-management doesn’t compare to the weeks and weeks of foofaraw and tens of millions spent by Fox and the teabaggers for far less effect.
In your face Glen Beck! In Your Face Lou Dobs!
Thanks Jane.
I saw that vid a couple days ago, two minutes into the song, i was blowing snot bubbles.
I do believe that the blonde judge was reading a script.
I had wondered about that. I mean how are the contestants chosen before showing up. someone had to know.
There you go. I don’t know if the whole audience (and we) were manipulated, but it remains that this poor woman still had a hard life, did take care of her mother, and did come up with the courage to take us all on. That. is. something.
Perhaps we should play her video for the detainees and they would devolve into bowls of jello and tell all their secrets??? It could work.
Didn’t Obama get more than that to the inauguration as well as a similar number in Germany? Tea baggers. What a joke.
