Hmmm, I don’t know about any bond being posted, but I do know that I was called yesterday, being asked to contribute to a legal fund for Franken. They are expecting that Coleman will fight this all the way to the US Supreme Court.

As I understand their laws in MN, if someone challenges the results from the recount and loses they are responsible for all the costs. At this point, since Coleman lost, the court can make him post a bond in the amount already expended.

The inquiry, which is examining the activities of a number of investment companies, focuses on what has been a widespread practice among hedge funds and private equity firms — paying so-called placement agents to gain business managing the pension funds run by states for public employees. Such payments often raise questions about conflicts of interest and concerns that they lead placement agents to bribe public officials.

The Carlyle Group, which over the years has employed George H. W. Bush and the former British prime minister John Major, is among the most prominent of the firms under scrutiny, and manages $1.5 billion of the state’s pension assets. Carlyle’s efforts to gain pension business in other states have drawn criticism before, but company officials have never been charged with any wrongdoing.

Mornin’ All,

They are expecting that Coleman will fight this all the way to the US Supreme Court.

go ahead on then . . . Scalia’s Nightmare

billmon:

“what Norm is threatening to do — if he can’t get his way in state court — is to demand that the US Supremes go storming through the equal protection door they opened just a crack, and then promptly tried to close again, in Bush v. Gore.

But if we’re really going to start vigorously applying the 14th Amendment to how votes are cast and counted in this country, then a whole bunch of GOP-friendly election realities are going to be open to constitutional challenge. How, for example, is it “equal” for poor and urban precincts to have 1/5th the number of voting machines per capita as wealthy surburban ones? Is it “equal” for election officials to routinely deny elderly, undereducated or inexperienced voters the assistance they need to understand complex, confusing and/or poorly constructed ballots? Is it “equal” for prosecutors to aggressively pursue registration fraud cases against ACORN, while generally ignoring those against GOP-leaning groups?”

Can you say “disparate impact”? How about “protected class”?

If that’s the case, I’m wondering why I was called in California. I hope there’s not some kind of scam going on with this.

IMHO, the right-wing corporatists will be more than happy to fund such a bond. It worth a lot to them to have one fewer Democrat in the Senate, given that the Dems are so close to the 60-vote threshold.

Think of it this way: one fewer dem is as good as one more republican, when it comes time to count the votes. How much do the Republicans spent per Senate election? Whatever the cost of keeping Franken tied up in court and out of the Senate will be small potatoes to these guys.

Franken’s campaign would not have access to the money until the appeal is done. By posting the bond the Coleman group would be assuring the courts that the money would be forthcoming when the case is finally lost.

I also saw that sort of request on the internet…it was pretty straightforward about wanting to be clear that Franken has whatever funds are needed. The opinion itself rewarded costs to Franken. But I guess that payments can be slow. The explanation I saw looked very reasonable…but what do I know? In this case, any Franken show of power & clout is fine with me.

Yep…and a pretty good way to focus Republican lack of fairness/integrity/goood sense. Something to make the most of at this point…and coverage has it that the folks of MN are ready for this to be over and have a new Senator. Like the Bush/Gore tragedy….Republicans are deep pockets and sore losers. Here in TX it will be interesting to hear what pretty boy Cornyn has to say, if he continues to interject himself.

i really don’t want any kind of war – metaphorical or otherwise. i’d rather find a win-win solution, even with a corrupt and greedy elite.

however, even though i may sometimes have to be dragged kicking and screaming to it, i’m coming around to the idea…

via naked capitalism’s links:

World will not meet 2C warming target, climate change experts agree

The poll of those who follow global warming most closely exposes a widening gulf between political rhetoric and scientific opinions on climate change. While policymakers and campaigners focus on the 2C target, 86% of the experts told the survey they did not think it would be achieved. A continued focus on an unrealistic 2C rise, which the EU defines as dangerous, could even undermine essential efforts to adapt to inevitable higher temperature rises in the coming decades, they warned.

Mornin’ Rev,

this little dfh loves the idea of their having to take anything from those deep pockets – they continue to trail Dems 2 to 1 in fundraising – and I could be wrong, but believe there will be more critical Senate Races for them in ‘10 than 08 – so go ahead you short sighted chuckleheads, let it ride :D

For some strange reason though, I’m thinking of that saying, If it weren’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all. I guess any level of class is better than no class. Or, maybe I strive to show a kind of class that has nothing to do with pearls and fancy heels?

Somehow, “No struggle but class struggle” just doesn’t do it for me. *g*

If you boycott retail chains, buy mostly organic food, boycott companies, e.g. Coca Cola, that have harmed the environment or other living things, attend and ask pointed, focused questions at candidate forums or other events where candidates attend, write LOE and to your congressmorons or any number of other actions (like being active on foul mouthed, dfh feminist blogs) then I’d have to say you’re a classy class warrior, like it or not.

I’m doing alright. I want to find more balance in my emotional life. I’m usually kinda up or down. Going to get some yard work in today. I always enjoy that.
As to wardrobe, I keep a pair of black slacks and a black jacket that I can wear anywhere, any time. Class it up or down with the kind of top you wear. Ha!
