As Jane told you earlier, there will be citizen-organized protests all over America today. As opposed to the greedy, gimmicky garbage being pushed by News Corp & Friends, these protests are calling for transparency in the federal government’s financial relief programs, and real, systemic reform.
Any bank that’s "too big to fail" means that it’s too big for a free market to function. The financial corporations that caused this mess must be broken up and sold back to the private market with strong, new regulatory and antitrust rules in place — new banks, managed by new people. An independent regulatory body must protect consumers from predatory practices.
There are dozens of protests across America—Lafayette Park in Washington, DC, Union Square in NYC, the US Federal Reserve Bank in San Francisco, Steinbruek Park in Seattle—click here find the protest nearest to you.
Jane will be speaking at the rally in DC, and if you’re not in DC, well, then you probably have better weather—so get on out there!

I wish you luck, but think that your protest is doomed to failure. Big organizations do not pay any attention to protests. They are so 60s. Besides, most people are so conditioned by TV that we the people have become apathetic about our ability to force change on any organization. BTW, that includes elections. Only 65% voted in 08. How many vote in local elections? How about school board elections? In both cases only the committed extremists bother to vote. In the case of school boards this is a major problem as those who vote are mostly hard core extreme right wing conservatives whose desire is to destroy public education and place everyone into state supported religious schools. Where the Fred Flintstone version of history exists, where the bible is the only thing you need to read, where evolution is out and ID is revealed truth.
Your efforts would be better served if you got involved in your local school board or local govt rather than attempting to get multinational corporations to change. Because all your protests are is sound and fury, signifying nothing. Want to bet that the tea baggers get more air time than cyou do??
Bite me.
They don’t pay attention to modern protests because modern protesters tend not to do things like boycotts, and things which cost money, but if they really did imitate the 60s and included activities which costed elites money, the elites would have to pay attention.
Thowing pie in their faces and making them socially uncomfortable would help too.
Yeah, what BL said. I woke up with a fever and hacking cough yesterday. I’m bummed beyond despair that I can’t be in Seattle. I was going to risk bringing a pitchfork. Damn.
If people are too apathetic, then clearly, the first target of protests are other people. It’s a demonstration as in “demo” – saying, look, see, this is a possible thing to do. Provide a focus, some basic concepts, and (to coin a phrase) a way forward…
To which end, I was really not pleased to find myself having helped provide a platform for Cindy Sheehan and her endless self-promotion, or for tedious anti-Fed conspiracy theories. The rally in SF was OK – not huge but not lonely – but the way it ended reminded me of everything that spells FAIL about the permanent protest factions in the US.
Early days yet, though. And I do realize you go to politics with the malcontents you have. We’ll see how it goes on.
To Hello@anewwayforward.org:
I’m writing to let you know that what I had hoped for in San Diego,CA never came to pass.
The ‘organizer’ -”Stepheng.bishop@gmail.com”- never responded to an email I sent, changed the location without notifying me(originally scheduled for the Embarcadero, then changed to ‘City Park’) so I could notify those I had alerted to the ‘protest’ and listed a phone number that is out of service (858-331-1817).
Supposedly 260 people indicated they would attend but there was no one at either City Park or on the Embarcadero.
I had even sent the press releases to the local newspaper and local ‘online’ paper. So to say I”m frustrated and p.o.’d is accurate.
Since I was the person who first posted about ‘anewwayforward’ on Oxdown Gazette and have been encouraging others to move their monetary assets away from the banks and to credit unions, it is truly disappointing to have an opportunity like this pissed away because someone couldn’t handle being an organizer. And the opportunity to have 260 people come together in San Diego is truly rare given the apathy and ‘kickback’ attitude that inundates San Diego.
You can’t have been at the protest otherwise you would be there now.
Dameocrat, I really take offense to those that call me a liar; I was at ‘City Park’ at 11:05 and then the embarcadero at 11:20; the 2pm was EST ,NOT PST as per the press release.
Maybe you need to go back to school to learn about timezones?

Alas, Boston was a washout as well, both figuratively and literally. According to the New Way Forward web site there were 471 people signed up for the event on the Boston Common. It was raining, so I’m sure some people stayed home, but as far as I could tell no one showed up. Not a banner or a sign anywhere. It was very disappointing…
Jane Hamsher was such a little coward at the DC “new way forward” whateveryoucallit. When asked about proof about her claim that the Tea Parties are controlled by the evil Fox News…she ran away like a puppy smacked on the nose with a newspaper! lol
