From the Hill:
Lieberman, the self-described independent Democrat who questioned Obama’s credentials to serve as commander in chief during the 2008 campaign, has panned the Obama administration’s proposal to cut the nation’s missile defense shield.
Lieberman’s opposition is problematic for the Obama administration because he is chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, the panel charged with assessing threats to the nation.

Can we please swap Joe for Avi?
Because it couldn’t be any worse.
Well seriously, who could possibly have predicted that letting Joe keep his HSC chair would come back to bite us in the ass?
Gimme some shoes.
When do we get to throw him under a bus? Figuratively speaking, of COURSE.
when does the 2012 election cycle start?
i’m really hating the democrats right now, but i’d be happy to canvas for just about anyone if it might help get rid of lieberman.
This is what happens when records quit spinning backwards… he starts shooting more billions into space and nobody questions his lunacy.
I think Joe should fund missile defense with his wife’s big pharma salary.
Not this again…
HARRY! Seat Franken now! Cut Joe Peckerhead loose!
At the bottom of the story Lieberman throws in the Israel/Iran angle:
Lieberman declared in Monday’s letter that the United States must continue working with Israel to develop a missile shield.
“The State of Israel faces a uniquely pressing threat due to Iran’s ballistic missile program and pursuit of weapons of mass destruction,” Lieberman wrote.
“In response, we have long cooperated with Israel to develop the Arrow family of missile interceptors and are now working together on the David’s Sling missile defense system to defeat medium range rockets. These are critical programs that should not be abandoned.”
—-
I’ve never heard of the Arrow or David’s Sling program. But what do they have to do with a missile shield for the US? Is he going to try to conflate them? I am sure he would never do that. He is an honorable man.
I don’t mind a debate on the merits, and since I have never heard of Arrow or Sling, I do not know the merits of them.
But I do not trust Lieberman to foster honest debate.
And Inhofe is starting the ‘Obama is CUTTING defense spending’ meme, which is not true -he is shifting priorities in the context of an overall defense spending increase.
We need a Loon Or Liar Watch (LOL Watch) whenever people like Bachmann, Inhoffe or Lieberman open their mouths. Or The Great Orange Satan (Boehner), or Issa, or McConnell, or any of these LOLs open their mouths
puravida, you beat me to the punch.
i wish obama would cut defense spending. what a big waste.
My understanding is that John McCain supports Gates’ proposed defense cuts. Does that mean Gerbil Joe has left the comfy confines of McCain’s ass to strike out on his own?
lol, i’ll second the:
AAAAAAGHHHHHHHHH*%@#!!~$%#@&^%$#@#$%#%^!!!!!!!!!!!
He held a HS committee hearing a few weeks ago and was willing to throw money at Janet Napalitano like there was no tomorrow. Time to set up some real tests that the contractor cannot rig. Demonstrate the program to be the hoax it is and label Liarman as a gullible spendthrift.
Just how many dimensions is Obama’s chess game now? Wasn’t it OS himself who called off the calls to jettison this POS?
That chairmanship is not etched in stone is it? Can’t Reid and the dems remove him at any time? Obama saved his chairmanship so now the first time he votes against Obama’s agenda he should be thrown out on his ass.
metaphorically speaking…
That seems reasonable.
I think BOOTS are what we really need for Joeliar, a good stiff one right up his B*tt hole. Of course he would die from that as I am sure that is where his brain is!!
This kind of fits in with Obama putting the fox in the chicken house. Summers giving away the ranch to his buds in the Banks. Timmy at treasury finding new ways to get around congress with the pay thing. Joe at homeland defense, with Obama’s blessing, finding ways to screw up the restructure the military. Eric at Justice singing the States Secrets to keep people out of court, now dumping the prosecution of Stevens but not talking about Siegelman.
I’m begining to wonder about the Dream Team.
Thank you. I feel much better now.
pretty scary how much is riding on that chess game. from krugman (!) today:
Separation of powers, the Senate is not there to blindly implement the president’s agenda so no, they cannot remove Joe for this reason. It was to avoid a situation like this that the Dems should have had the brains and courage not to let Joe retain his chair in the first place.
I think the worst situation is to have these LOLs prevent an honest debate. The debate on money for IMF, for example. Best thing would be to get IMF funds needed to deal with probably Eastern European financial cirses, using consensus methods for dealing with financial crisis, but not performing weird IMF macroeconomic experiments, or finding a pretext to give more favors to the crooked U.S. mega-banks.
But… we will get lots of nonsense fantasies about impossible totalitarian world currencies.
When these Loons or Liars get on the TV, we need to pounce everytime the press does not call them on their nonsense.
And, I agree, Lieberman needs to lose his chairmanship. He can’t do it right even when he is (or maybe trying to be) honest.
So what is the procedure to take a chairmanship from someone?
T-hee! I first read “assessing” in Jane’s quote from The Hill as “assigning.”
Happened about the same instant JLie’s photo cleared onto my screen.
No one could have forseen…
Figuratively speaking? Just in case that was a typo:
http://www.wmata.com/rail/schedules.cfm
Who could ever have imagined…?
I’m shocked; SHOCKED, I tell you!
Follow the money. Let’s get to the bottom of which Ray-Gun defense contractors give Joe the most money and hang it around his neck. Cash for votes worked for Bloggo, let’s use it on Joe.
Sort of OT: Frontline tonight on Saudi, Bush x 2 or 3, etc., sales, arms, oil, blah blah. So what else is new?
No one ever could have predicted…
but i don’t think the democrats want an honest debate. that’s why they don’t do anything about the LOLs. camouflage.
So how much of that fantasy system is being built in Connecticut?
Here’s a 45. You go to Siberia and fire it up in the air. I’ll stand in Kansas and guess when the bullet is coming, fire my 45 and knock your bullet right out of the air.
Yup, Smokin’ Joe has it all figured out.
I’m not positive, but I believe that Reid has a lot of control over which pieces of legislation are sent to which committees.
Time for Lieberman’s committee to deal with legislation on new ways of making lemonade; send the real work to committees on which Lieberman does not sit.
It’s becoming increasingly obvious that they don’t want an honest debate about anything. Weasels.
Me too
AAAAAAGHHHHHHHHH*%@#!!~$%#@&^%$#@#$%#%^!!!!!!!!!!!

AAAAAAGHHHHHHHHH*%@#!!~$%#@&^%$#@#$%#%^!!!!!!!!!!!
Heckuva job, Harry.
WTF?
“In a stunning defense of President George W. Bush’s warrantless wiretapping program, President Barack Obama has broadened the government’s legal argument for immunizing his Administration and government agencies from lawsuits surrounding the National Security Agency’s eavesdropping efforts.
In fact, a close read of a government filing last Friday reveals that the Obama Administration has gone beyond any previous legal claims put forth by former President Bush.
Responding to a lawsuit filed by a civil liberties group, the Justice Department argued that the government was protected by “sovereign immunity” from lawsuits because of a little-noticed clause in the Patriot Act.”

there’s a problem with my computer. everytime i refresh to see new comments i see a picture of someone’s ass.
/sfixed it
LOL. thank you. that’s how i originally had it, but was afraid i’d get advice about my computer and added the snark tag in edit. i shudda known better.
Beginning? Eventually we the people (probably about the time they decide to steal social security) will realize this is a class war, that the elites use the political system to keep us apart. I guess when the middle class is taken down a few pegs, we will start see how much we have in common across the political divide…
You could say Bush is stupid, you can’t say that about Obama. This isn’t good guys just surrounded by bad advise; we can’t afford to be that naive anymore…
We can say crazy people worried about losing their guns is Faux news’s fault but ‘everyone’ is feeling squeezed by economic pressure and betrayed by our government (both parties), that’s how EVERYONE I know feels. How we react to that is what separates the angry citizens from the crazy ones…
Digg it right here!
on cue:
my contempt for Joe Lieberman will never subside.
Dugg!
i’ll see your wtf and raise you one.
add in hr875/s425 with bills requiring anyone growing/processing food to use chemical pesticides and fertilizers or potentially be a criminal.
that’s what this whole last eight and a half years has felt like.
it’s forkin’ exhausting and breathtaking the speed at which we’re being taken over.
the language is prettier and more civilized but where is the change? where the fork is the change? AAAAGH, etc.
You can’t say Obama didn’t “bring it on.”
hey Joe, you ignominious pr*ck – your car’s about to be towed.
true, unfortunately, for most of us citizens of the world.
KO just figured out Obama doesn’t mean what he sez.
I would have thought obama was suave enough to get some gaurantees from liarman
not
I have no problem what so ever ko going after obama for the same things he went after cheney bush
good on im
…and my contempt for Joe Lieberman knows no bounds.
I’ll say it again. Heckuva job, Harry!
and the plate – just right
I hope you’re right and that Nepalitano can have some influence.
It’s not as though the signs weren’t apparent months ago. As predictable as no WMDs in Iraq (and the other 9 lies of all time).
Funny that it took KO & Turley so long to figure out what kind of a powermonger Obama is.
Resp to LS at 38
So, really no matter who we elect, the Constitution no longer applies to the
dictatorPresident and the other branches are irrelevant except as a rubber stamp?Scarecrow’s diary Front-Paged!
Oz Leaders Directed to Solve Financial Crisis
what did he say?
When Obama removed his shoes at the mosque, I’ll be he didn’t have a hole in his sock.
Well, we don’t need to sit still for this crap. Good to see you, LS.
Mainly about the response on wiretapping, asserting that you can’t sue the govt unless you can show they’ve done you harm. Turley sez it’s a breathtaking expansion of sovereign immunity, even more that W asserted. And the earlier guest who said that Obama won’t pursue torture prosecutions.
yes. i’d be interested to see your list of the 9 other lies of all time.
TeeHeee..Thanks for that. Perfect
They’re the standard ones, might be modded out, and I can’t remember them all. (I promise not to come …, for example.)
Given that we’re barely past two months, I’m sure they were giving him the benefit of the doubt. However, the handwriting is now on the wall. It’s time to start digging in and calling it like it is…
thanks. that’s excellent.
that one was the only one i could think of that HAD to be on the list.
I presume you mean my reporting is excellent not Obama’s stand on the issues. *g*
lol. your reporting and ko’s and turley’s statements.
obama, not so much.
Oh good, KO is gonna have one of Cantor’s ambush victims on (I missed her name). I wonder what she’ll have to say.
MaryJo Kilroy of Ohio, who acquitted herself very well, I thought.
She really did.
Tomorrow Joe sits down to Seder on the first Passover night, but the Angel of Snark won’t wait. Poor guy, he’s still digesting Purim’s hamentashen of prunes and poppy seed.
Right, poppy seed was GWB, for one.
About forkin’ time!
FunnyD
I’ll start screaming “AAAAAAGHHHHHHHHH*%@#!!~$%#@&^%$#@#$%#%^!!!!!!!!!!!” if Reid or Obama express surprise.
The Lurking Mod does not understand many of the words in this comment. We certainly hope it is not out of bounds. :)
The sympathy is genuine, though I don’t know the senator, and I would never wittingly traduce FDL’s reasonable guidelines.
Followed up on the Yiddish. We cool.
He can’t at this point without compromising America’s security.
… and no, some troll did not steal my nom de blog … *g*
“poppy seed” was given ‘honorable mention’ by The Nation mag in its 2001 contest for what to call the unelected Bush, since the editors didn’t want to call him ‘president’.
*sniff* *sniff* … you just don’t know how much you upset poor li’l Harry Reid when you make fun of his BFFAE !
Eli is upstairs!
Fauxlanthropy
Time for a second briss. I’ve got a shaky hand…
Wall St. The Biggest threat to national Security.
Campaign Funding. A big threat the national security.
Helth Care. A bigger threat to nation security.
Bloated Defense Dept. A gargantuan threat to national Security.
Wish someone would cut Harry Peckerhead loose.
Surprised the Republican notion of “ambush” doesn’t include a rifle with telescopic sight. All in due time.
Why the heck did Harry the weak Reid let this guy keep any seat on the Democratic side of the aisle? Come to think of it, why the heck does Harry have his position?
(Love the year on that photo up top. Don’t I wish it was accurate!)
Its still a good old boys club and Harry Reid identifies much more closely with Joe Leiberman than he does with you and I. If he made any noise condemning Holy Joe’s actions during the electing, it was just for show.
So this is the thanks Obama gets for supporting Lieberman’s continuation as chair?
When will Rahm have a little heart to heart chat with Joe-boy?
Bob in HI
Doesn’t surprise me at all.
What leads any of us to believe that this wasn’t part of the plan all along?
And if it wasn’t part of Obama’s plan, then, frankly, he got what he deserved. He kind of asked for it.
I’m not shocked at anything any more.
That pretty well sums it up for me, too.
“Ti-i-i-i-me ain’t on his side…” ohh I pray “Cause he keeps comin back…” Ain’t it time to put him out to easier going pastures. Maybe create a Dept of Crapola, go well with his Chairmanship of the Dept of Same Old Crapola.

You must be joking. Emanuel and Lieberman have intimate little chats every day about how much they both heart USrael.
I find it interesting that little of the discussion seems to consider the implications of the fact that the missile defense system does not work and the threat–third-world ballistic missiles–does not work much better. Lieberman is saying that we are in danger if we do not waste money on a weapon that can’t defend us from a weapon that can’t attack us.
I’ve followed the subject fairly closely over the 30-odd years that missile defense has been a topic, and I am unaware of a single, indisputably successful test intercept of a ballistic missile under anything like realistic conditions. When you get a trade publication and read the fine print, the “technically” and “partially” successful intercepts announced in the mainstream media all turn out to have been near misses against unrealisticly large targets and targets that carried beacons to help the interceptor lock on. Similarly, during the first Gulf War, we heard a lot of noise about the success of the Patriot missile against Iraqi SCUDs. The post-action analysis, which showed not so much as a near miss, got almost no mainline press at all, and we bought lots more Patriots at ridiculously high cost. Now Aegis destroyers and the son-of-Star-Wars system in Alaska are getting the same treatment. Israel just announced the success of its Arrow-II, after years of failures.
Interestingly, at the same time, the propensity of the scarey North Korean ballistic missiles to break up in mid-flight like the SCUDs before them also goes largely unmentioned. The Iranians buy this technology. Iranian missiles probably have the same problems–it’s a simple technology in theory but hard to engineer in practice. So the threat missiles are, in all likelihood, self-intercepting.
Which leaves us with questions about Lieberman’s motives. Dare one suggest that he and the Iranian extremists share a common goal, like Reagan and the ayatollahs of old? Might we conclude that, by agreeing to wield a non-existent defense against a non-existent threat, Lieberman and his counterparts in Teheran and Jerusalem are deliberately escalating international tensions and courting hysteria for domestic political reasons?
I wonder if Joe’s more concerned about kickbacks or does he really have this bullshit right-wing war on terra view of the world?
. maybe Holy Joe is reading the economist. I have this March issue, “How China sees the World.” I wonder how many wonks read these articles in *gee whiz* fashion. If so, it’s a wonder that they even see the Chinese as human beings and not some people on a mission to mars. And it’s no wonder Greg Staph kept pushing at Rice on Sundayre:N.Korea, saying, but but but “isn’t pushing china the answer? Shouldn’t we be focusing on pushing China?” Like yes, rightards, China is big. No rightards, Asia is a complex place. It’s a place where China has gotten it’s ass beat by fierce little countries like Vietnam. And Japan can flap right-wing style. G*ds! I am so fed up every time a George Will, Greg Steph brings up China. Why don’t they *read* something? anything! besides the so-called “conventional wisdom” ?!?
Their articles on Iran seem all riddled with bullet headed logic and scarcely veiled rightard hegemonic concerns.
Weren’t they launching a satellite that went off like a missile on a limp dick?
Satellite or missile
