We invited DCCC Chair Chris Van Hollen over to FDL today to talk about Wednesday’s incendiary Politico piece by Alex Isenstadt. In what Van Hollen’s office claims were out of context remarks, Isenstadt seems to have framed Van Hollen as "calling on liberal groups to back off in their efforts to target moderate Democrats who have been skeptical of President Barack Obama’s ambitious budget." Van Hollen couldn’t make our chat today but his office claimed a NY Times report on the same day by Kate Phillips more accurately– less Drudgily– described what the chairman was saying.
First off, no one is attacking "moderate" Democrats, just the really
reactionary ones who vote with Republicans as a matter of course on
core issues– like the budget, which saw 20 Democrats, including
right-wing Blue Dogs John Barrow (GA), Dan Boren (OK), Bobby Bright (AL), Travis Childers (MS), Parker Griffith (AL), Frank Kratovil (MD), Jim Marshall (GA), Jim Matheson (UT), Mike McIntyre (NC), Walt Minnick (ID), Harry Mitchell (AZ), Glenn Nye (VA), and Gene Taylor (MS) abandon the Democratic leadership and line up behind Republican clowns Boehner, Cantor and Ryan.
Allies of Van Hollen’s tell me, off-the-record, that he’s all for progressive groups encouraging support for President Obama’s agenda. Of course what he doesn’t want– and what many Democrats don’t want– is a situation where any Democrats wind up being defeated by Republicans, who will be just as bad on the core issues and much worse on other issues– the ones that give the Democratic Party the power it strives for above and beyond the principles it may or may not represent. “What I’ve been warning people very clearly is, beware of forming a circular firing squad,” Van Hollen said. “We believe people should be focusing their efforts on expanding the Democratic majority, and that should be their singular focus."
Van Hollen indicated that he had communicated that message to people associated with the liberal groups in question.
Van Hollen was quick to point out that during the 2008 campaign cycle, the conservative Club for Growth ran damaging ads in then-Maryland Rep. Wayne Gilchrest’s primary race. The effort, he said, wounded the more moderate Gilchrest and paved the way for a more conservative and ultimately weaker general election candidate to win the nomination.
Ironically, it did progressives no good at all since the Democrat elected is a reactionary Blue Dog, Frank Kratovil, who frequently votes with the GOP, as he did on the president’s budget. In fact, this is what lies at the heart of the disconnect between the reasonably progressive Van Hollen and grassroots progressives Outside-the-Beltway.
As many of us Outside-the-Beltway have come to learn– the hard way– being a Democrat in and of itself is not necessarily that much of a virtue. Oh, sure, it helps the Democrats control the agenda (and the best parking spots and corner offices for themselves) but the massive Democratic majorities in the House haven’t lived up to expectations of progressive activists. Democrats whose primary interest is representing the aspirations of ordinary working families are constantly dickering and compromising with Republican-like so-called "Democrats," mostly Blue Dogs, who always put the corporate and special interests ahead of working people.
There are currently ten of these so-called Democrats who, on crucial issues, have actually voted more frequently with the GOP than with the Democratic Party! They are, from bad to worse (all radical right Blue Dogs) Zack Space (OH), Gene Taylor (MS), Harry Mitchell (AZ), Dan Boren (OK), Chris Carney (PA), Heath Shuler (NC), Jason Altmire (PA), Brad Ellsworth (IN), Joe Donnelly (IN), Travis Childers (MS)– and with 2 other, Collin Peterson (Blue Dog-MN) and Gabby Giffords (Blue Dog-AZ) voting exactly evenly between Democrats and Republicans. Five Democratic freshman haven’t cast enough critical votes to be rated yet but undoubtedly reflexive aisle-crossers Walt Minnick (Blue Dog-ID), Bobby Bright (Blue Dog-AL), Parker Griffith (Blue Dog-AL) and probably Ann Kirkpatrick (Blue Dog-AZ) and Frank Kratovil (Blue Dog-MD) will easily wind up on the same list.
It is Van Hollen’s job to build as big a partisan Democratic Party caucus in Congress as possible. That is very different from building a caucus that stands behind the values and principles espoused by Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. Strom Thurmond was once a Democrat too and, more recently, so were Jesse Helms, Richard Shelby and Phil Gramm. Their Democratic Party– which looks remarkably like the Democratic Party of John Barrow, Bobby Bright, Joe Donnelly, Walt Minnick and Travis Childers, is a danger to everything we believe in and to everything that makes the Democratic Party even just the lesser of two evils.
Joe Donnelly represents an Indiana district that leans Democratic. Obama won it with 54% of the vote. But Donnelly consistently opposes Obama’s entire agenda for change. He doesn’t deserve to be re-elected. Even if a more horrible Republican wins in 2010, in 2012 there will be at least a chance a moderate Democrat will take back the seat. This week Van Hollen’s DCCC launched radio ads against half a dozen vulnerable Republicans who voted against the budget, Mike Castle (DE), Ken Calvert (CA), Bill Young (FL), Thad McCotter (MI), Charlie Dent (PA), and Mike McCaul (TX). Excellent targeting but the ad would be just as effective if it were to run in South Bend, Elkhart and Kokomo and point out Donnelly’s voting record. Listen:

Once again, Beltway Mentality cripples progressive politics. Those Who Believe They Know Best don’t want us fleabitten rabble messing up their delicate and nuanced political machinations. Really, democracy would work a whole lot better if the population would just shut up and let the politicians do their jobs…
I tried to get Van Hollen to join us today but his office said he’s on the road working on electing Democrats. I couldn’t get them to tell me which Democrats and that makes me think it could have well been someone like Travis Childers in Mississippi, who’s actually voted with the GOP approximately two-thirds of the time on core issues dividing the two parties. Or maybe I’m wrong and he’s spending a lazy Saturday afternoon congratulating Donna Edwards’ constituents on having elected the member of Congress with the single most progressive voting record of anyone.
I bet Van Hollen just hates to get the message: “Uh, Congressman? Howie Kelin has been trying to reach you this afternoon. Says he has a question on something where you were quoted.”
I can just see him hunching his shoulders and trying to shrink inside himself when you call and call him out for something stupid he might have said.
The establishment Democrats will never give up power willingly — it will just not happen. They prefer a system that keeps the “rabble” on the outside looking in while they party on. The fact is that if the progressives in the Democratic Party, including the rank and file voters, want power then they have to take it whether the Van Hollens of the world want it or not.
The Blue Dogs are just the continuation of the takeover of the traditional D party by the traditional R party that started with Clinton. Even my wingnut son thinks Clinton was a decent prez, which sez everything.
And this abandonment of core Democratic values isn’t just a problem in the House with its Blue Dog caucus. In some ways the Senate is even worse, where they have their Evan Bayh anti-Obama Bloc. One of the members, Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) took a look at the financial devastation the country is going through and decided to team up with Jon Kyl (R-AZ) to fight the battle for billionaires demanding a better break on the estate tax– like her liege lords and ladies, WalMart’s Waltons.
The root of all this: corruption– the corruption built into the way political campaigns are financed. This last week I was looking at a relatively liberalish voter in Congress, Debbie Wasserman-Shultz puppet Kendrick Meek (D-FL), who wants to be a senator now. This guy is the ultimate non-leader and basically a complete hack for the special interests who finance his campaign (and his mother’s career). He had a BIG PAYDAY this week at a lobbyist part in DC.
I was gonna hang out with the Blue America gang today but this stuff just pisses me off.
Have a good day, everyone.
Which is why I propose the “False Flag Democrat” meme.
Sigh.
Thanks for this, Howie. Sounds like VanHollen is just as bad as many thugs: beware of creating a circular firing squad = DFHs should be seen and not heard.
FunnyDiva
But this is exactly what the gopliters rely on. If it takes a few election cycles to get rid of these turncoats so be it. If, in the first election cycle, the blue dog gets beaten by a repub then the “enemy” is clear in the next cycle.
In this state, NH, we have a republican lite Senator in Shaheen who is, frankly, further to the right than Sununu in many social issues. Death penalty, income taxes, rights of cohabitation, domestic violence, pro choice but she was elected because she ran under the Dem banner and was the beneficiary of Obama’s coat tail.
Frankly I would rather the devil I know than the devil I don’t. I for one will not vote, and have not voted, for a gooperlite and it is insulting to assume that just because a candidate runs under the Dem banner that they are somehow better than an honest republican.
On a slightly different note, I was dismayed to see the names of four House
Dems who I have supported on Jane’s list of those who
voted for Melissa Bean’s amendment to gut the TARP bonus restrictions:
Rep. Bill Foster [D, IL-14], Rep. James Himes [D, CT-4],
Rep. Daniel Maffei [D, NY-25] and my very own Rep. Eric Massa [D, NY-29].
It seems that bypassing the DCCC and donating directly
to candidates who seem progressive is no solution to the
problem posed by Emanuel, Van Hollen and their ilk .
I am not a happy camper.
When we have the dimocrat “leadership” putting up repugs masquerading as dims there is never going to be a progressive majority in Congress. Just getting a majority of dims in the Congress should not be the aim of the “leadership.” I must say, however, that having rahm sitting next to Obama and the current economic team in place does not give me any confidence that we will really leave the w legacy behind.
That ad is really stupid. Why is the DCCC buying into the GOP’s “tax cut” meme? Why make “tax cuts” the center of the President’s recovery package? Why continue to make people think that the best way to evaluate their politicians is “what did he do for ME today?”
Cutting taxes is a GOP meme. Our guys shouldn’t amplify it. Stupid.
Still, I’m eager for Blue America to make an effort to go after some especially bad Republicans. Jane, Digby, John and I have been looking at GOP budget loon, Paul Ryan, who represents a moderate swing district in southeast Wisconsin (Les Aspin’s old seat). Obama won the district and, aside from Thad McCotter, Ryan is the most vulnerable GOP leader. I even approached the DCCC about working together on this. But you know what? Despite the fact that the district is FILLED with high-powered Democratic state legislators, Ryan has never been seriously challenged– or even semi-seriously– and it looks like he’ll get another free ride in 2010. Democrats I’ve spoken to there want to wait for him to give up the seat (and run for governor or senator or something) before committing. I don’t want to wait and we have a StopPaulRyan page up now.
“Those Who Believe They Know Best don’t want us fleabitten rabble messing up their
delicate and nuancedcompletely idiotic, misguided and ultimately counter-productive political machinations.”Fixed it for you.
AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Howie Klein and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Bless your heart Brother Klein, you get an oak leaf cluster and a star to put on your Norske Medal of Citizenship. It is time for people to understand that we are in real danger in this country with the fascist oligarchy consolidated in the rump Republican Party and the Democratic majorities getting too large to accomplish the progressive restoration of constitutional government absent strong political leadership in the Congress or in the White House.
I’m sure that Van Hollen is a very nice, well meaning man who loves his kids and doesn’t kick his dogs but he is a weak and therefore dangerous political leader at this moment. One Hung Harry Reid is also weak but I’m not sure about how he treats his pets…and Nancy Pelosi is capable and has the most political chops of any of the current elected Democratic leadership but she’s hemmed in with Stenny the Hit Man Hoyer and Van Hollen at her back and Rahm Tiny Dancer Emmanuel in the White House.
This leaves the President who is very strong but has chosen his staff team almost too well and therefore has left the management of the Democratic caucuses in Congress to Rahm and the corporatists in his inner circle.
I am really worried because there is no ideological “middle” anywhere in Congress right now and the real “conservatives” are in the Democratic party…this is setting up to look like the last days of Weimar Germany more and more every day.
Is there any chance that MoveOn and other progressive grassroots folks will stand up to One Hung Harry and Tiny Dancer and declare war on the Blue Dogs and the Quissling “New Democrats”?
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE FUCKIN AMMUNITION, THESE PEOPLE STILL DON’T GET IT!!!
I live in the congressional district right next door to Kratovil and I think progressives should cut him some slack. It’s a tough district for Democrats and the Republicans would have won it easily last year except they nominated some Club for Growth nut job. Kratovil won by only a tiny margin and is certainly at the very top of the Republican hit list for 2010.
And as a practical matter, Pelosi didn’t need his vote to pass the budget bill and probably gave him a free pass on this one in light of this one in light of his re-election problem. Kratovil seems solid to me, so let’s see how he votes on the big issues like health care before we write him off.
Actually, MoveOn is part of a coalition Jane has been working on putting together: Accountability Now. They’re busy looking at quite a few Blue Dogs who are betraying the interests of their own constituents.
“This week Van Hollen’s DCCC launched radio ads against half a dozen vulnerable Republicans who voted against the budget,…Ken Calvert…”
I’m embarrassed to admit that Calvert is my rep in Congress. I will attest without equivocation that he is a complete, fucking idiot, a horrible excuse for a representative. Included on the list of top 20 most corrupt members of Congress for three years running, he consistently panders to the lowest common denominator, voting against anything and everything that even remotely resembles progressive policy. I want to see him stomped in the next election, just humiliated. He came close in 2008, but no cigar. Any help from the Demo party is welcomed and encouraged.
Go Accountability Now!!
we need to start building a progressive party at the local and state levels so we can change the election laws that lock in the status quo. Public funding and requiring the media to run the ads pro bono, they are our airwaves after all. hold them accountable and vote em out if they aren’t.
Strangely, when the tables are turned (not that they ever are these days)
you never hear Republican activists saying things like
Citizen Howie Klien:
Yes dear, I understand what MoveOn and Acountability Now are designed to do…but I also understand that they have at least temporarily backed off of their pressure on the Blue Dogs and “New Democrats” after One Hung Harry called ‘em out. Is that true and if so my question stands…are those progressive grassroots folks gunna give the corporacrats in Congress the bird and run the ads down the bastards’ throats in every Blue Dog district?
This is a district Blue America will be looking very, very closely at for 2010
I don’t know what MoveOn is going to do– and it is the White House from whence the pressure comes they seem to be responding to– but I can tell you this: Accountability Now is absolutely NOT backing off. Rahm Emanuel could try calling Jane or Glenn and won’t get very far.
What a relief it would be to see this dirtbag out on his fat ass…
And while you’re at it, can you target Jerry Lewis (right next door), too? He might very well be more corrupt than Calvert – if that’s even possible.
I’ve said similar things about Baron Hill – that the main difference between him and Mike Sodrel is that Mike will make speeches supporting evil policy, Baron will just quietly vote for it.
Replacing Lee Hamilton with Baron Hill just doesn’t make sense to me. Hoosiers in the same District had no problem sending Lee to Congress for term after term, and his replacement should be at least as liberal as Lee.
Thanx Citizen Klein, that answers my question.
While not a district in which Blue America should expend resources, Mark Souder’s District could be worth looking at by Accountability Now for a Republican primary challenge. Mark is horrible on a lot of issues and it may be possible to replace him with a better Republican.
i’d like two better senators here in texas, if y’all don’t mind!
Since MoveOn has decided to bow in deference to Rahm, I am redirecting all the few shekls I have been givin’ to them and sendin’ em in the direction of Jane and Accountability Now.
Hi Howie, thanks for all your great work.
What sickened me yesterday was that 63 crossed over to vote for a SAVE the BANKSTER BONUSES amendment. Their goddamn states are going broke, and they vote for this?
Maybe, maybe, you give the reps in the NE corridor a pass, if they knew it was going to lose anyway. But, wtf, it was Dems all over the country saying fu to us and hello banking cash. Did they effing think we wouldn’t notice?
How insulated can they be to make a vote like that?
Just venting, thanks again for all your great work, we soldier on looking for less bad candidates.
is there a list of who voted for and against?
I hear ya. We’ve got the illustrious DiFi here on the left coast. She really creeps me out, and the word is that she might go for governor in 2010…and get party backing, no less.
It was Melissa Bean’s amendment: http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2009/roll180.xml
I can just imagine how that phone call would go . . .
ring, ring
Jane: Hello?
Rahm: Hi, Jane — Rahm Emanuel here.
Jane: Why, Rahm! Howie and I were just chatting about you. How’s Al Wynn doing these days?
Rahm: %$%& off.
click
The truth is not pretty. But sometimes it’s funny as hell. Ha!!
It sounds like you were at the bar last time Jane and I did talk with Emanuel!
About that Melissa Bean amendment BooRadley was complaining about, it was meant “to allow institutions that enter into a payment schedule with Treasury on terms set by Treasury to no longer be subject to the bonus and compensation restrictions created by” Grayson’s bill.
thanks, my lovely rep voted against.
ick. could there be a silver lining in the way of a replacement?
Here’s the list
These are my big three lines in the sand. Support this or go tf away.
Solid meaningful public option buy in on health care.
Solid meaningful support of employee free choice.
Solid meaningful efforts towards prosecution of war criminals and fraudulent banksters.
Otherwise they are not worthy citizens, much less worthy democrats.
What is Charlie Rangel doing voting for Bean’s amendment?
Howie, I’m not trying to make more work for you and the FDL writers. I’ll throw this out in case there’s some way to off load it onto FDLers. It would be nice if we could get the big daily in each district of the fallen 63 to do a story about how they voted for big bonuses. IIRC, Wisconsin Democratic delegation, hung together with only one defection, Ron Kind. Problem is he’s on the opposite side of the state from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. His constituents might get the Wisconsin State Journal or one of the Minneapolis papers.
It might be a worthwhile project, because it’s “bipartisan,” it’s taking out all the Rethugs who voted for it. It would be nice if FDLers could keep track and post a link when a paper does a story on it.
A lot of Dems showed their mettle by not crossing over. It’s sad to say about something this obvious, but we need to show them some support. I’m not talking cash, just calls and emails saying thanks from the FDLers in their districts.
This is free advice probably worth about half of what you paid for it.
Here in Honolulu, Hawaii, our nominally progressive Democrat Neil Abercrombie is quitting his House seat in Congress to run for Governor. Unfortunately, the highest profile Democrat running for Abercrombie’s seat is Ed Case is a blue dog. There are a few more progressive possibilities, but we might just be stuck with Case, since no Republican is viable, unless current Governor Linda Lingle decides to run. Our local Progressive Democrats group is looking for someone to support.
Bob in HI
“I will gladly pay you a dollar Tuesday for a hamburger today!”
Okay, you can pay your executives huge bonuses then.
Honestly, I don’t feel that ActBlue ‘attacks’ anyone.
IMHO, you’re simply calling bullshit and trying to build new mechanisms for transparency. Things like ‘the Kiss Float’ simply make people accountable for their votes. They should be accountable for the way they vote on billions in federal money; that’s not ‘attacking’, that’s just a no-brainer.
So today, I’m in for Carol Porter-Shea, and maybe Steve Cohen.
Can I also tip the jar for StopPaulRyan from the same page…?
It sounds like you were at the bar last time Jane and I did talk with Emanuel!
I hope you stuck him with the check. “Another bottle of Dom over here for Rahm and his party…”
thanks – i sent my rep a thank you note.
I’d love to know what Massa was thinking. My own representative, Adam Smith, also voted for it. He’s been fairly consistent in favor of the elite, so in his case it was no big surprise.
Right now, I’d vote for a Republican who had demonstrated a penchant for enforcing the law on government officials over someone like Smith. We need a Congress that is dedicated to playing its appointed role in the government. If we had that, we probably wouldn’t have most of the problems we face today.
whatever is good for charlie rangel :-)
Yeah, I saw that and thought, “wow, wouldn’t I love to be a fly on the wall when some of those people talk to their governors.” Jeebuz…!
at least it would get difi outta the senate – and hopefully a better democrat in her seat.
I’d like that but I’m sure some severe right-wingers will be gunning for the position. Ideally, I’d like to see DiFi vacate the seat and then lose in the gubernatorial primary to someone progressive. And then have someone progressive win the senate election. And since I’m really getting drunk on ideas, get rid of Calvert and make it a Trifecta for me. I’d be doing the happy dance…not that I can dance, but I’d make the shit up. Could be my YouTube moment…
Yes, please.
should all of that happen i will be holding you to the video of you dancing. a small price to pay, no? oh, and we’ll all be celebrating with you….
Who would be running in the Democratic primary to replace DiFi?
I have to wonder if Tom Campbell might opt for running for Senate if DiFi runs for governor. It would be great to have a somewhat liberal Republican choice in 2010.
kay bailey hutchison is also thinking of running against goodhair for governor. god forbid either one of them should use it as a stepping stone to president. but that poses the same question here in texas of who would run for her senate seat.
Don’t expect Foster to be progressive. Foster proudly ran as a blue dog in the ex-Hastert district, having been recruited by Rahm just like Melissa Bean was in the neighboring district. Howie supported Laesch in the primary against Foster, but Laesch was too caustic and immature, although he came within 300 votes of the self financed Foster in the primary. If a good progressive would run, now would be the time to start campaigning.
Is Arnie not going to run? I ask that because I suspect you won’t find another Republican who is anywhere near as liberal for a while yet. They seem to be doing their best to cull them and concentrate on being the best far-right space cases they can be.
That’s what they want us to think. Actually, the blue dogs are the political descendants of the “state’s rights” Democrats.
i’m not in ca anymore (thankfully) so am unaware of who to get to replace her.
Oh, on second thought, I just read the StopPaulRyan page, including this:
Okay, it’s a pleasure to put a couple pennies to get this level of corruption out of office. The fact that this guy is spending $2,200,000 in a house race — as are others — says a lot about what’s wrong with ‘the system’.
If 365 days x 2 years of a House term = 730 days,
And I divide $2,200,000 by 730, I’m coming out with about $3,014 per day for Mr. Ryans’ services on behalf of banks and ‘insurance’. I’m sure AIG and Morgan Stanley figure that they get their money’s worth; for a mere $3,014 per day, Ryan is probably a hell of a deal from their perspective. (Assuming none of them ever get laid off, etc, etc, etc…)
Since we now know that ‘insurance’ includes offshore tax havens and derivative swaps, it’s my great pleasure to put all my pennies toward the ‘StopPaulRyan’ page today. Not much, but if enough of us do this it will add up over time.
Note to Dems as well as Republicans: if your votes for ‘insurance’ have enabled companies that write ’swaps’ and ‘derivatives’, I’m probably not alone in wondering whose interests you are actually serving in D.C…
Are there any plans for Accountability Now to back third-party candidates, like Green Party? I think this can put more pressure on the Democratic Party than simple primary challenges, especially to let them know that our principles mean more than party loyalty. If we lose the primary, we can still pressure incumbents from the left in the general election. I’m not looking for pure left-wing loyalty here, but we really can’t settle for the Blue Dogs running the show.
I’d take a tree stump over her. Smarter and more life-like.
O/T. I just stumbled onto this site. Haven’t had a chance to drill down on it yet, but the title caught my attention.
http://bankimplode.com/
For me, it’s the automatic choice, when no progressive is in the field. Which in AR D party is always the case. Although I must admit I am also willing to consider socialist candidates should they arise. AR Greens are picking up ground at a nice pace these days.
It’s past time to play extremes if it’s the only option available for moving the overton window, imo.
FDR arguably did what he did not because he said “make me do it” but because large numbers of voters left the party and voted socialist.
I hope not. Look at Nader. He had no chance of winning. He just caused somebody worse to be elected. He just became an unwitting tool of his enemies. How much influence does he have now in either party, despite the funding he got from Republicans. Hopefully we can learn from that tragic former hero.
Seconded.
I’m not arguing for this at the presidential level. Although if a true Blue Dog were the candidate, I would personally consider it a valid option. But I think in many cases at the congressional level this makes sense, as one congressperson/senator doesn’t make that much difference, but we have no power if we’re afraid to use the only weapons we have.
False. Even Gore the Lieber-lover version says Nader didn’t cost him the election.. in Fla or anywhere else.
Back off???? If progressive groups do anything they should turn up the heat even more. Out with the Blue Dogs once and for all!
Citizen Eureka Springs:
You have been sellin’ that slush for Uncle Ralphie since 2000 and Al Gore is certainly too classy to pass responsibility off for a loss but WE out here who hafta continue to make voting decisions in the future have the responsibility to learn from the defeats of the past so as not to buy into the charletons and snake-oil salesmen in future elections…the numbers don’t lie, if Nader had released his folks or told them in Florida that that election was too close to protest by voting for him, Gore would have won. And, further, that’s what the obsolete, broken-down political opportunist told everyone he wanned his folks to do and he knew he could swing Florida and he didn’t do it.
One Senator could make a huge difference. Right now the best bills can be killed because we don’t have enough votes for cloture. When Sen. Franken is sworn in we will have 59 including the two Independents that caucus with the Democrats. With just one more, we will have the votes needed without any Republicans. If a bill comes up that would be very unpopular back home, a Senator could vote against it. The opposition would then have to try to cram an explanation of Senate rules into a sound bite for campaign ads.
Congressmen and Congresswomen are also important. Depending on what you want from the Government, your Representative may be the person most willing and able to help you in a variety of matters.
Seriously?
You’re actually trying to make sense out of Chris -”Oh Israel I’m so sorry I sent a letter to Condi about your excessive use of force against Lebanon and I’ll never do it again” – Van Hollen?
Good luck getting a DCCC man to do anything but schill for the Right. Just ask Raaaaahhhhm.

I’d like to see more support for third party candidates, esp. Green Party. Not at the presidential level, but down-ticket, to build a third party strength. Democrats need to know that they have to do more than say, “I am not a Republican” to get our votes.
Bob in HI
If they do, they can count me [and my of course MASSIVE financial contributions] out.
Actually the Blue Dogs only help to give committee control. If you count on the Blue Dogs to give us 60 votes, they control the issue. And again, we gain no power if we’re not willing to vote for and support someone else. We’ll continue to be the “battered spouse” forever.
I think ads on the estate tax votes could be very effective, highlighting how these born-again deficit haters voted,
I don’t think Americans are probably much in the mood to hear about how unfair the estate tax is at the moment.
Plus you get to point at that lowering revenues also increases deficits.
It’s tempting to just say blue dogs are bad, mmmkay.
Blue dogs are all wrong in one way or another, but what they are wrong about varies from member to member.
If you look at the voting statistics over at ProgressivePunch you will see that while the Blue Dogs on average are worse than the Progressives, and worse than the New Democrats, they are still much much better than the the Republicans. You can also see in that chart how progressive they are compared to their district. Looking at those two numbers you can find blue dogs who we should try to defeat and blue dogs who would just be replaced by worse Republicans.
SwingStateProject.com also has some great information on that.
