The AIG Scandal, Brought to You by Light Touch Regulation

By: masaccio Sunday March 29, 2009 10:30 am

Scott Polakoff has been put on leave pending investigation of his role in permitting federal savings banks to falsify their financial statements. Maybe someone should check into his role in supervising AIG.

“Sixteen Tons”: A National Anthem?

By: Glenn W. Smith Sunday March 29, 2009 9:30 am

Despite the claims of the rich, wealth does not equal morality. The American economy won’t recover until we understand that.

Citi and AIG Didn’t Still Don’t Get It

By: emptywheel Sunday March 29, 2009 8:18 am

Fox Business News has an article describing what it got in response to a FOIA request for Treasury documents on the bailout. While most of the interesting details were redacted because of attorney-client privilege, the documents do reveal the extent to which Citi and AIG were as arrogant when Treasury was negotiating this stuff as they have been in recent weeks.

Their Children’s Birth Certificates: The Next Fight in LGBT Equality

By: Lisa Derrick Sunday March 29, 2009 7:30 am

This week New York City joined the rest of the state in allowing married lesbian couples to list both women as parents from when one of them gives birth, though the state itself does not yet perform same-sex marriages. In May Gov. David Paterson ordered state agencies to respect out-of-state same-sex marriages saying that recent court ruling could subject agencies to discrimination claims. New York City keeps its own vital statistics separately from the state; the city’s Board of Health voted unanimously to make the change.

Late Late Nite FDL: Kiddin’ The Kitten

By: Suzanne Saturday March 28, 2009 10:00 pm

Kiddin’ The Kitten starring Dodsworth.  This 1952 Warner Bros. Inc. Merrie Melodies production was directed by Robert McKimson.  Story by Tedd Pierce.  Animation by Phil DeLara, Charles McKimson, and Rod Scribner.  Layouts by Peter Alvarado.  Backgrounds by Richard H. Thomas.  Musical direction by Carl Stalling.

This cartoon reminds of me of Wall Street fat cats and politicians.  What’s on your mind tonight?

BREAKING: Vampires, Gays Insufficiently Frightening; Children in Grave Danger of Inappropriate Sucking

By: Thers Saturday March 28, 2009 8:01 pm

NRO warns the nation that just like gays, vampires are becoming disturbingly trendy, unlike the good old days, when they were, correctly, killed on sight as incorrigibly evil suckers of repulsive bodily fluids.

Poison Takes a Holiday: Rio Grande Aerial Weed Killer Spraying “Indefinitely Delayed”

By: Kirk James Murphy, M.D. Saturday March 28, 2009 6:35 pm

Last Tuesday Homeland Security’s very own Border Patrol announced they were canceling their plans to begin aerial spraying of the pesticide imazapyr along a stretch of the Rio Grande the following day. In other words, the agency that demands billions to seal America’s borders in large part so they can prevent Americans from voluntarily putting dangerous chemicals in their own bodies grudgingly changed their own plan to involuntary expose Americans to dangerous chemicals.

Earth Hour Tonight: Let’s Do It in the Dark

By: Lisa Derrick Saturday March 28, 2009 5:25 pm

[Earth Hour is TONIGHT from 8:30 to 9:30 (or 20:30 to 21:30, if you prefer) wherever you might be in the world. Elliott has more video of this global event, and TBogg takes note of the wingnutosphere's self-aggrandizing, self-absorbed, and downright selfish response. Check 'em out! --ed.]

Turn off the lights, set some candles aglow and draw a bath.
