Naturally, this incident was reported on right-wing blogs 180 degrees opposite of reality and Obama becomes "Mr. Teleprompter" — like the device had been invented on January 20, 2009.
Yesterday, unrequited John McCain apologist Ron Fournier who I imagine considers Obama’s use of a teleprompter "arrogant" took up this theme. Now comes Michael Gerson who writes a mealy-mouthed defense of the teleprompter industry with this statement:
It is amazing how swiftly a presidential tendency turns from observation to joke to meme. Barack Obama — called "the most eloquent political speaker of our time" — has become known as the teleprompter president.
Yeah, how on earth does stuff like that happen, Mr. Washington Post Editorial Page Columnist?

About Firedoglake
G’day, and g’nite, late night Firepups!
See y’all again tomorrow…
After two weeks home sick (stupid stubborn cold), I’m determined to get back to work tomorrow.
Bob in HI
It works because there’s a lot of fucking fucks who actually want to believe these fucking fucks. Fuckheads, all.
It works because there are a lot of fucking fucks who actually want to believe these fucking fucks.
This is all they got? A Bush speechwriter whining about teleprompters? Alrighty then.
It is exactly all they’ve got.
That is why they will repeat it 24/7…
Citizen Smugumby:
Yes, lotsa stuff is changin’ as old institutions go broke includin old technologies like the television and cable news…I’m jest waitin for Obama’s monetarist whiz kidz ta get with the program and move us out of a financial services economy and back into a production based economy…we either do that or we become a protectorate of the People’s Republic of China.
I’m watchin Rachel’s replay on MSNBC, The pukes said socialism, fascism and dictator in relation to Obama this week.
Here’s a nice piece from the Oakland Trib:
Watched it this morning also. My favotite story was the republican budget plan that seems to consist of cutting revenue. The brilliance is staggering. Massive shortage of income for years resulting in enormous budget defecit, so…………reduce income. But this is the correct thing to do because the socialistfascistdictator in chief reads a teleprompter.
Citizen Raven:
What the fuck is that all about…I’ve missed a whole bunch I guess??!!
Even jackass Joe is hammering Boener etal.
Citizen oldnslow:
“The stupid it burns!”
Stopped this dude in East Oakland. He killed 2 cops on the street and then ran in his sisters apartment and killed 2 more with an AK. There is also dna evidence that he raped a 12 year old girl.
Good morning, pups. It’s Bobo and Krugman today. Bobo is still addressing military matters. In “The Winnable War” he opines that at the end of a trip to Afghanistan, despite personal skepticism, it was hard not to be infected by the optimism of the people who are working there. Mr. Krugman, in “The Market Mystique,” says that the top officials in the Obama administration still believe in the magic of the financial marketplace and in the prowess of the wizards who perform that magic.
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got banana pancakes today. I’m running late, so I’m vanishing to do all the things I need to do before I leave for work. Have a great day. [POOF]
I earased a little response to your #6 because it came off on reread as an attempted justification for the killing of 4 cops. But it should be understood that this part of Oakland has been, since the end of WW2 almost exclusively African American, desperately poor, hopelessly unemployed and brutally repressed by police. This part of Oakland is very close to the train station where the BART cops shot and killed a teenager a couple of months ago. (Also very close to where the H.A.’s shot it out with cops in the ’60s or ’70s.) For a long time the highest murder rate in the country.
It should also be noted that there has NEVER been a serious or sustained attempt to address the underlying socio-economic issues devestating the area.
I know that.
Thanks attaturk.
Posted a longer commentary on this ridiculousness over the weekend and continued to follow it on the blog. When Maureen Dowd and the Associated Press D.C. bureau chief get in on the action, you know it’s no grass-roots event–it’s a media phenomenon.
The imbecility still gains momentum…
Citizen oldnslow:
Didn’t Jerry Brown get a political “retirement” job as Oakland’s mayor back in the 80’s? And didn’t he represent the “white pioneers” who had visions of gentrifyin’ the place and makin’ it into a yumpie paradise…er did I jest get this confused with another of ol’ Governor Moonbeam’s assaults on rationality?
Deep Thought:
Why doesn’t Cass Sunstein Nudge the banks to act more responsibly?
Or is social engineering just for the
dirty peonstaxpayers?I suppose when you are living in a ghetto, treated like scum you might have a lot of pent up anger. This country needs to address poverty and racism and not ignore human beings and heard them into ghettos and lock them away in prisons. This will explode from time to time until the conditions are human and the underlying cause of the problems are removed. There is little will to do more than harsh policing and willful disregard and lock em up.
We need to change.
NorFla, the answer to all that crap is ‘no’: Brown started as Mayor in ‘98, wasn’t retiring as he’s now California AG, was not a gentrifier, and you’re confused.
Well, if he stooped to criticizing rethugs it must have lasted all of two seconds.
The right wingers have nothing against President Obama….not even a budget plan….so they’re concentrating on the teleprompter meme in the hopes it will infuriate Americans!
I’m telling you….the wingers are fun to watch today. They’re a mess.
Citizen toma:
I was about 10 years off but I do recall that he started out in the job as a savior for the “folks” and ended up bunkered in his office with the “folks” outside his door…not a lotta love lost in the end for the bastard.
I was finishin’ undergad stuff in the UCAL system (UCI) when Brown was Governor jest before he was knocked out by St. Ronnie…I must say Brown was a good Governor but he surely got lost in the tall grass as the years went on.
Bonjour les pups.
Fournier is quite a piece of work. At least he doesn’t make any secret of it. It was sad when that great ship went down, as the song says. And it ain’t coming back up. The thugs should be looking for life-rafts that don’t leak.
so they’re concentrating on the teleprompter meme in the hopes it will infuriate Americans!
Sad.
And they used to be so good at infuriating Americans.
Not intentionally, of course, but quite good nonetheless…
Morning!
why indeed.

Just read Paul K’s piece. Think about the way banks used the risk-shedding feature of securitization to actually increase their risk. It’s a lot like the way automobile manufactures (outside Europe) used the improvements in engine design and other automobile characteristics to raise performance — i.e. acceleration — rather than hold the acceleration capacity constant and raise mileage. I’m getting the same mileage on my subcompact bought in 2001 that I got in my first subcompact bought in 1971.

good. Now I know which part of my day to set aside as being too sick to turn on the teevee…
thanks, Elliott.
you could ask him a question:
journal@c-span.org
I’m sure the 12 year old he raped before he murdered the cops will be glad to hear your analysis.
thanks, but – no.
Kristol makes my fingers sick too.
Citizen Raven:
Ya get no argument from me…once the terrible crimes have been committed the sociological analysis kinda loses somethin’.

subtitle – “Yeah, the First one Sucked, but This Time We Have Some Really, Really, Good Ideas. Really.”
And of course the fight for a better life for everyone is not mitigated by these crimes either.
I loved how yesterday during their Big Budget Plan Outline Blueprint Call-It-Whatever-You-Want-But-Don’t-Call-It-A-Real-Budget-Just Yet, John Boner said, (paraphrasing) “We are against bailouts! No more money for bailouts!”, and then 10 minutes later (or less), Boner was asked again about bailouts and he said, “Ummmmm, we’ll see”!
My, my, my how the right wingers of America have come apart at the seams. I like to picture them late at night in the corner of their bedrooms in the fetal position asking for Momma.

All this talk about teleprompters is Rovian politics. Attack their strength (whether it makes sense or not). Obama, being a powerful speaker, is being mocked for how he delivers the speech. Thus, the more powerful the speech, the more they can mock him. It’s thin but so was mocking Kerry’s purple hearts. And we know how that turned out. When you have FoxNews and Rush repeating this garbage 24hrs a day, some of it sticks. Then all of a sudden, instead of talking about what O says (which may hurt them) they can instead spend all their time laughing at his reading skills. The internet is the firewall.
I can’t believe they went before the cameras when all they had to offer was a load of …. nuthin’. Can;’t see the need to invite the press to say over and over “uh, we’re workin’ on it. we’ll get back to you.” and that thing they had printed…. anybody see how many pages?? now, i know that length doesn’t necessarily = quality and I’m not necesarily expecting a completely detailed budget from the opposition. i’ll cut ‘em some slack. but it looked kinda thin to me. what are these guys? pamphleteers? my feeling is it’s always gona be thin because they’re thin on ideas.
was thinking the same thing. more generally. we talk about how t5he R’s got nuthin’ and are pretty ficked up as a aprty right now. true enough. but this “just say no” and attack can work – at least to some extent.
Complete laughing stock and I’m enjoying it so immensely. For 8 years we watched these assholes pump up their chests to show us how ‘tough’ and ’smaht’ they are. Now we’re seeing who they really are: A BUNCH OF WINGNUT NINNIES.
Okay, the teleprompter thing is the usual right-wing inanity but while not equally bogus Obama as “the most eloquent political speaker of our time” is also a joke. He benefits greatly from whom he followed. An eloquent speaker, political or otherwise, can do quite well of the cuff and routinely with any prepared speech. Obama can (on occasion) give a decent speech -no more.
As my nephew would say…
Or actually, would have said a few years ago, because now, at age 10, he’s more mature than the average American, “He who smelt it, dealt it.”
These Village media types figure that the way to throw off the blame for starting these ridiculous memes, is to be the first to comment about them. But the 3d graders in this country are already ahead of them. They’ve seen this tactic employed in less exalted settings. They know that the first to complain about the stink is probably the author of the stink.
