In a poll taken before the Obama endorsement ad was released in the district, the leader of the Assembly Republican Conference isn’t doing very well:
ALBANY, N.Y. – A new poll shows Democrat Scott Murphy has taken the lead over Republican Jim Tedisco in the closely watched race for Congress in eastern New York’s 20th District.
The Siena College survey gives Murphy a lead of 4 percentage points in a poll with a margin of error just more than 3 points.
The poll released Friday found Murphy, a venture capital manager, with support from 47 percent of voters. Tedisco, a veteran of 20 years in the state Assembly, had 43 percent.
Needless to say, a Republican running behind in a district with a 70,000+ Republican registration advantage isn’t very good news for the people who are trying to nationalize the election as a referendum on Obama.
I think it would be nice to do well in that particular referendum, so below the fold, a few ways you can volunteer to help in the last few days before Tuesday’s election, both inside the district and nationally (and, as ever, any donations can go here)

they have yet to learn, the more they obstruct the peoples work and progressive agenda the more they will lose their seats to power
the problem is, the democrats haven’t learned that either and they continue trying to govern as though they are “moderate” when in fact that “moderation” is entirely right wing nut agenda
here’s what they are missing;
the republicans constituents do not want what the republican polititians promote, both democratic and republican constituents want a government FOR THE PEOPLE, not a government for and by corporations
we ALL have to board that ship
Julia, I totally digg that you are keeping us up to date on this race. Thank you!
The downside to this is that if Tedisco loses, Michael Steele would probably be toast, as well.
And that would be a shame.
This has been gangs of fun. It’s a soap opera.
You know, I’ve been thinking that very thing.
Sort of makes you wonder why a party that doesn’t want that to happen is making so many basic mistakes.
Didn’t I read somewhere that Murphy has said he’s a Blue Dog? Pretty bad when we have to support a Blue Dog just to keep a Rethug from getting elected. I’d say NY-20 Dems have some work to do between now and 2010.
I think the humiliating resignation of the GOP’s first African American chair, and the mad scramble to replace him, perhaps with a (former) racist, may be of more value to Democrats than keeping Steele in place. He may have run his useful course for us; he can only actually improve from this point. Better we have the scandal of his being toppled and the juicy, horrid campaign to succeed him expose the GOP for what it is.
In my view.
And thanks, Julia, for keeping us up to date on NY-20. I’m happy to support Scott Murphy with a wee pittance earlier. Wish I could do more. He seems well-suited to the district.
I’m sort of enjoying Steele myself, but the whole situation, as you say, is a shiny object and it’s so hard for our friends in the wurlitzer to ignore a shiny object…
thank you julia
