Corporate opponents of workers’ freedom to form unions repeatedly have shown they are not interested in the welfare of their employees or any of the pseudo-lofty ideals they cite while fighting the Employee Free Choice Act.
Now, they’ve made clear they will do anything—even destroy jobs, communities and harm the U.S. economy—to ensure that more American workers do not have a voice on the job. (And this just in—they’re now using Joe the Plumber as an anti-Employee Free Choice Act spokes-idiot. That guy can’t seem to keep a job.)
In Wisconsin, a local economic development official in Eau Claire County said a project was derailed because of the proposed Employee Free Choice Act. According to today’s Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, the unnamed project would have brought a
$50 million investment to Eau Claire County in the next five years, along with creating up to 800 full-time jobs, Brian Doudna, executive director of the Eau Claire Area Economic Development Corp., said in a news release Wednesday evening. Construction was expected to begin this year. The first employees were to begin work in early 2010, with about 100 new jobs being created. [snip]
“Proposed federal and state legislation, as shown by this company’s decision, can impact location decisions and limit the private sector’s ability to create quality jobs for Eau Claire area residents. This is especially disappointing given the condition of our current national, regional and local economies.”
Yo, Brian: What’s “disappointing” is the blackmail screaming out here. The threat by employers to destroy the community they theoretically are invested in just so those employers don’t have to actually talk with workers across a bargaining table about what might make for a safe workplace, what they need to support their families and retire without working until they die.
That’s bad enough. But here’s the kicker:
Doudna said if the bill is approved, the project will not occur—at least not in the U.S.
Blackmail, big time. In short, U.S. corporations are saying: Give us unlimited control over the lives of our workers, or we’ll go to another nation where “human rights” is a dirty phrase and “workers’ rights” even worse.
The local Chamber of Commerce’s response is to attack government.
Bob McCoy, president of the Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce, said the government essentially is stopping growth in the Chippewa Valley.
“I think it’s one of those situations when the state starts trying to generate additional revenue or put certain criteria on business, it can reverse itself,” he said. “There’s a potential for the Employee Free Choice Act, and (businesses) can’t afford those types of consequences.
Because the Wall Street way worked so well for us, huh, Bob?
There’s a lot to be said about corporate greed fueling the opposition to the Employee Free Choice Act. But as the nation’s $4 billion annual union-busting industry shows, more than money is involved. When corporations are willing to spend far more to fight unionization than they would spend on a unionized workforce, when they are willing to rip out the economic guts of the community—then something seriously is wrong with the culture of those who call the economic shots in this nation. Because the corporate threat screaming from Eau Claire is not just blackmail. It’s anti-worker. Anti-you. Anti-me. Anti-American.

So, I’m trying to figure out how they take stimulus funds and then build a local economic development project in China. How dumb do they think workers are?
I am confused on this issue. What I have heard/read is that this act would eliminate the secret ballot. I find it hard to understand how eliminating the secret ballot helps the cause of democracy.
State and local government has no problem with giving companies the tax breaks and subsidies the companies say they need to locate there.
That’s bribery.
This is more like extortion: ‘we’ll make you wish you’d paid those bribes instead’.
It does not eliminate the secret ballot. That’s the lie they’re pushing to get people to oppose it.
You need to read better, more reliable, more truthful, less industry-dominated sources.
The assertion that the secret ballot is in any way trumped or subjugated by the EFCA is fallacious at best and a near-criminal falsehood at worse.
The corporate side has spread the lie that the Employee Free Choice Act would take away the secret ballot.
The Employee Free Choice Act will not take away the ballot election for workers considering whether to join a union. Rather, the Employee Free Choice Act will give workers, rather than management, the choice of whether to vote on unionization via ballot or to indicate their support to join a union via majority sign up (also called “card check.”)

you might have noticed that we’re in debt to china for over a trillion dollars. a little bit of the stimulus is not the issue – it’s the union busting, anti-worker anywhere and anywhere mindset that is.

It was an honest question about an issue that I have not read about other than casually. I’d hoped that here, of all places I could get a civil and enlightened answer. You owe me an apology. To the rest who kindly answered, thank you. The whole process seems legally porous from both the worker and management side. There has to be a simpler and more democratic way. And, for the record, I strongly support freely elected unions.

I agree about the theme of economic terrorism, the shock doctrine, whatever you want to call it. Its purpose is keep us confused and not knowing how to react. The leaders of Wall Street have done more harm to our country than Osama bin Laden ever dreamed of. The difference is that he was a pike who lives in a cave whereas they live in luxury on the Upper East Side.
Anyone thinking about what happens if we can’t get the 60 votes? What happens then? We wait until 2011? Maybe we need to think about how we can up the ante.
I think there is more than a passing possibility that the mess we’re in now is the result of “smart money” (meaning those in the loop) recognizing global demographic realities a long time ago. They could have taken the Clinton route to secure America’s future by making us the indispensable country–a kind of world glue that holds democracy and freedom together, or the empire route. The advantage of empire is that a new royalty is established via accumulation (looting) of massive wealth. The empire choice was made but the Cheney cabal did not count on things spinning out of control. Our shot at empire was barely a flash in the pan because the world is far too interrelated for any country to dominate for long. China has the challenge of getting rich before it gets old, and right now its population is aging faster than its wealth is accumulating. They were on track to fulfill the demographic forecast of dominance, but the crash has also dashed their plans.
Maybe, post crash we’ll find an alternative economics to consumerism. A system of ecological balance that provides safety, comfort and intellectual challenge in place of material productivity (make more, buy more and more and more).

Just to clarify – the Employee Free Choice Act offers two options; 1. Card Check in which a defined percentage of employees express willingness to form a union (30% to 50% of employees)by signing a card or, election – the current practice where an interest in forming a union is announced, followed by an employer response that includes any manner of advocacy against forming a union (including firing workers, threatening to close a business and other actions that are in violation of the NLRA). What’s new is that currently, only the employer gets to choose whether or not the employees get to have union representation.
If you want an example of the benefits of having a Union, please look no further than Chesley, “Sully” Sulenberger and the successfull rescue of 151 passengers and crew – the “miracle on the Hudson.” You will find that the entire matter and amazing outcome was largely attributable to the skills and dedication to safety of ALL INVOLVED! Almost everyone involved was a union worker. Workplace safety Must come before profits, and fair and equitable pay for hard work is simply not too much to ask.
When secret ballot is an option, thuggery will not allow it to be used. It’s NOT the employers who stop the unions, it’s the secret ballot used by workers who do not want the union and cannot be intimidated, since their choice is private.
