Just sayin’. . . .
Jane went on The Rachel Maddow Show tonight to explore why our Democratic president and a large Democratic majority in Congress has to worry more about a few Democratic Senators and their new coalition, led by the aforementioned Senator, one Even Bayh of Indiana.
Why is Bayh bucking his party—and, more importantly, his own state’s population—to go to the mat for the banks? Maybe this chart has something to do with it:
That’s a list of Bayh’s top campaign contributors from 2003 to 2008.
Just sayin’. . . .

About Firedoglake
Really, there isn’t a lot more to say about bayh and who he really represents.
That chart is fugly and needs to be, I don’t know, shopped around.
Kicked his butt.
Way.To.Go Jane!
wish it could be EVAN…BY BY
jane was great on maddow – the conservadems didn’t factor the jane response into their DINO calculations.
Let us hope Rahm has a good plan for Bayh and friends.
Thanks for the info on Bayh. Would you provide the same info on the other conservadems? I think writing e-mails with this specific type of info might get their attention. By the way… you looked and sounded great.
Digg Jane Here!
Bright, smart and articulate …. what a wonderful representative for progressives
dugg
Do they ever factor in Jane:)
Jane is so great!
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.
This is exactly EXACTLY what Bayh needs to answer for.
Saw you tonight on Rachel’s show, my most favorite, and decided to check out your website. I signed up, thanks. BTW, you were great on Rachel tonight.
Dear Senator Bayh…. I need universal health care and I need it now. You and your conseradem buddies are standing in the way. I know there are millions of Americans who need it too. Get out of the way of the American dream.
yup – as cotten13 said at 6 – we need to get the same info on the other conservadems.
hi and welcome to fdl
Student loans no more banks taking a cut for doing nothing!
Do you think that the contributors will be that much different from the other dems?
Indiana ranked 10th in percentage of households affected by foreclosure in 2007
sure will be interesting to find out mac – my gut says they have very similar contributors
Howdy Welcome to the Lake if you have any questions just ask someone should know the answer.
How many college kids with bank loans in these conservative Dem states? I wonder in we could put out an email maybe someone from the Dept of Education could slip us a mailing or Emailing list so we could micro target them and their parents?
Somebody in the Dept of Education must have future political ambitions and would want our support later on.
Welcome~
that would be a violation of their privacy if someone slipped us that info things
Imagine if we were Goopers and we asked for that list…
I wonder how much more these companies gave to the Republicans? Bayh and his friends are happy to take smaller portions of the lobbyists cash pie just so long as they get a seat at the table,… the children’s table.
I like your gut. And also like Jane. Every time (and I think this is the third) I hear her she’s sharp, cool, and tonight persuasive.
Good contrast with Maddow, who goes for the knockout too much.
Great job tonight, Jane. I really enjoy seeing you directly challenge these hacks by quoting dollar amounts of the
campaign contributionsbribes they have accepted. Pretty difficult to argue with data that is right there in the public record.thanks mac – she really was good with maddow and i thought rachel was kinda in awe of jane – the way she opened and closed the interview.
Indiana ranked 11th in percentage of households affected by foreclosure in 2008, with foreclosures up 64% over 2007.
Welcome. It’s fun around here. And the stuff we learn? Whoa…
Excellent, Jane. Home run.
*spitting* bayh is doing his contributors forking dirty work.
Bayh has come on the Maddow show to shovel his ‘centrist’ BS twice now. I suspect there will not be a third with that chart floating around.
Are you sure I ended up somehow on a GOP mailing list once, an anti immigrant mailing list. I wrote a letter in response to the local news paper and got it published.
I think I was on the list just because of where I lived or my Drivers License information. I think the GOP Sec of State sold my information to the GOP.
Maybe a mass mailing to college towns would work?
Weird part he has in his hair.
You are probably right about that. Rachel has a good habit of inviting people onto the show to answer for specific points, however. If he doesn’t show, he hiding. If he does show, he’s gonna have some splainin’ to do…
voter registration info is not the same as financial loan information things. you are asking to get the names of everyone who took out a loan – not who registered to vote.
If he is unwise enough to try and explain that contributors list, live on her show, I’m not going to complain. I will be watching.
What kind of business model do the banks have that the only way they can make money is to buy politicians so they can cheat kids getting student loans for college? How many more kids could go to college if the banks were not taking a cut?
Not to mention violation of federal and state laws, too . . .
Mz. Hamsher sounds good . . . great to see her ON RM’s show, with all its ratings.
This place has jumped leaps and bounds in the past year . . . it’s become a mover and shaker.
Well done, all.
And I’d like to acknowledge William Black, Matt Taibbi, CHS’ TALF Talks, EW’s recent threads, and many of the folks who comment so proficiently on the econ crises.
When I read Mz. Hamsher’s thread with the questions to pose to Teh Hearings Today, well . . . it made a big impression on me as it covered all I’ve read in the past month or so about all the econ issues (whew, complicated).
From Deep Capture/Patrick Byrne/Mark Mitchell, to Francine McKennah, Yves Smith and ‘Naked Capitalism, William Black and Matt Taibbi and such . . . . all that with FDL, TPM and others . . . the story is told, in full. For all to see.
Well done, FDL. h/t
That would be some really good entertainment on the TeeVee Box Machine.
i’ll bring the popcorn
That very technique was probably a much-vaunted MBA project produced by some dipshit at Harvard Business School.
That would work too people with college educations vote more and are more likely to have kids going to college and I suspect their kids are more likely to be registered to vote and need student loans.
hey larue
And after seeing his buddy Dodd get just creamed 2 days in a row on CNN, I suspect Senators are keeping it pretty close right now.
things – would you want your information blasted all over the net for everyone to see and know that you took out a student loan?
it is illegal.
No one cares about kids who NEED student loans, they are NOT the favored grads with jobs awaiting at the top of the carton of cream . . . . only kids WITH money, with parents WITH money, and past history of pro business, and such are admitted into the ranks of the business at the top.
The rest are a burden to the 1%.
If we were GOPers we would get that list in a second.
That’s a very big “if” my man.
We need to get those college loans OUT of the hands of the creepy, crooked bankers. Who do I write. Who has the info on this? I want the loans held by college graduates to be rolled over into the public system. My kids are mortgaged up to their necks in school loans but own no property. Sure they have an education but where are the jobs?????????
Is that THE Carlyle Group i see there?
oops
They’re probably using cloaking devices they got from their black ops buddies over at the Pentagon…
They want to cut back on the mandatory minimum tax that hits the middle class, they want to eliminate President Obama’s signature “making work pay” middle class tax cut.
Apparently, higher taxes for the middle class are fine. On the other hand if you want raise taxes on the AIG bonuses, you need to need to put down the pitchfork and shut up because you just don’t “get it”.
The 600+ billion in President Obama’s budget set aside for health care changes over the next 10 years, that’s gone.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03…..38;emc=rss
What he needs to do is make his National Service program retro-active. Put in 2-3 years and get your loans paid off.
Yeah cheating kids 101 Its an open market with little competition because all the ethical people won’t do it so no
competition except from unethical people.
And we wonder why the banks are in trouble and why their are so many Ponzai schemes. If you hire unethical people willing to cheat kids well you must expect them to be willing to cheat everybody.
yup, in the top 20 at #15
I was just about to ask that same Q. They’re in for $32K+.
I thought the C Group was/is R. so why is Bayh a D ??
Why would I care? But if its illegal then fine we can still do a mass mailing on this just use voter registration information.
Evan Bayh is up for
re-electionDE-election in 2010. I can’t wait. Can we have Birch (his father, former Senator) back please?!Suzanne at 59– well that explains a lot.
Senator Bayh Cheats Kids sounds like a campaign slogan if we can Primary him.
Senator Bayh who cares about people losing their homes just so long as the Banks pay Me!
conservadems – just another name for that old showing of true colors formerly known as DINO, democratic in name only
r’s in sheep’s clothing is more like it
http://www.muckety.com/Carlyle…..57.muckety
Enjoy.
A much-admired Democrat.
DUGG Jane Right There!
Jane is always right on top of the subject at hand and these SO Called Democrats will be looking over their shoulders and seeing Jane Speaking Truth to their LIES! DOG help them!
I wonder if FDR had the same problem with fake Dems?
Lilly and Cummins are major employers in Indiana.
Something that had been tickling my memory recently was an Indiana insurance company – Conseco, which according to wikipedia: Conseco was the trigger for the creation of the current structure of the credit default swap market.
Hay! ;-)
Somewhere there’s a pun with bail, or bale, waiting to surface after that salutation . . .
Spring there, yet? 73F today, and climbing.
Windy, pollen, suhneezes galore.
All that sunshine is blinding. ;-)
Would it was shining on our pols, Treasury, FED, Wall St., DTCC, and more. . . . *G*
That list of items in the bailout plan that Matt Taibbi wrote about is insane, speaking of Teh Dahk:
“There is the Term Auction Facility, the Term Securities Lending Facility, the Primary Dealer Credit Facility, the Commercial Paper Funding Facility and a monster called the Asset-Backed Commercial Paper Money Market Mutual Fund Liquidity Facility (boasting the chat-room horror-show acronym ABCPMMMFLF). For good measure, there’s also something called a Money Market Investor Funding Facility, plus three facilities called Maiden Lane I, II and III to aid bailout recipients like Bear Stearns and AIG.”
We had Hooverville, we’ve had Pottersville suggested, and BushVille suggested too, as the New Depression Housing Zones . . . . I suggest we call them all HicksVille, cuz of Dan Hicks’ ‘Where’s The Money’.
Can’t find the utube of that, so here’s this, something we likely all do, at times in our lives:
Lurvs Me Some Dan Hicks
Sigh, lo the days of Winterland, The Fillmore, Avalon Ballroom and Maryann Price And Naomi Eisenberg. Milkshakin Mama’s, both . . . then and now. Voices as smooth as ice cream. *G*
Another little secret is that credit card companies pay universities to have access to college students so they can get them signed up for credit cards…… So they have exclusive access to thousands of kids who probably have NO financial education ending up with not only high cost student loans but credit card debt…..
Yep. And TeamObama has had this for quite a while.
If he did he sure managed to overcome them! Lets hope BO can do the same and get the Bill he wants that will help the people and not all these predatory lenders who have already gotten Billions from the Government!
The conservative Dems must have seen the how Newt purged the GOP of moderate GOPers. We have 2 lost wars, a banking Crisis, the big three car makers going under, with the airline industry probably soon to follow, people losing their jobs, healthcare and homes pushing the country Left.
Not since FDR have we had such a mandate for change, Newt never had this much political anger backing him.
The conservative Dems are going to get smooshed.
Agreed:)
Thanks, Jane. Where are the Dems in speaking out? Or is it impolitic to suggest one’s colleagues, like their GOP counterparts, want power more than responsibility?
We should ban credit cards at least until you are old enough to drink.
Charlie Rose has a group of Villagers on discussing the President’s news conference. It is as painful to listen to as it sounds.
Nowhere near the problem. The house of reps was ALL democrats and the system followed in the house was rigidly controlled by party leadership.
Roosevelt’s problem was the judiciary.
On the Muckety list of participants I note Mark Johnson worked on Obama’s campaign, fund raiser. I am so depressed.
Bravo Jane!
hey npb – how’s my plants?
that is very discriminatory as I raised one kid who I know handled a credit card very well and continues to today. What needs to happen is that kids need to have education, they need basic use of checking accounts, credit cards and, how money moves through the system and budgeting.
What happened to those high school classes that taught that? Oh NCLB really left them behind didn’t it……
Jane, very glad to see you with Rachel Maddow earlier this evening. Would be nice to see you often there.
I don’t think well of Evan Bayh. He’s been elected because of his father’s legacy – first Governor, then Senator.
When I’ve visited his office in Washington I’ve been given a brush off, unlike Lugar’s office where I met with different staffers specific to the issues I wanted to discuss (drug law reform, employee non-qualified stock option accounting).
I don’t think the people of Indiana are going to nominate someone else in a primary. I also don’t see a Republican that would be better than Bayh getting a nomination. Bear in mind that Dan Quayle and Dan Coats were the previous holders of that Senate seat.
Evenin’ All,
pleasantly surprised to find this thread’s still live:
‘zup Ms. Suzanne and Katymine ? oooh weeee ! Jane Hamsher on the tee vee putting the wood to Lieberman 2.0, ummm get it gal – she gave out sooo much information – fabulous
What Evan Bayh lacks in charisma he makes up for in wanton douchebaggery.
-G
This is the kind of info we need to ascertain where they are coming from. What can be done to make them open up their web sites to those of us who aren’t their Constituents?
late late nite 2 flights up
If you want to compliment Bayh, this isn’t the thread…
admired his father.
appreciate your assessment – sounds sadly realistic
gonna have to do some reading – what in the world does he see as his advantage in this ? and dear god, what about Rahm ? if half the cw on Rahm as enforcer is true, what do these guys think he’s gonna do when they fu** with the WH on Budget ?
and what is this C student going to do when his largest patron’s brand suddenly goes toxic or has he failed to notice the focus now turning to GS ? jeepers, even some of the villagers are sniffing around. maybe it’s just havin’ lots of money in the bubble that is Congress makes ya careless
.
11/4/08 was the beginning of a fight, not the end. The corporatist Right is never simply going to give up, and they will not compromise. Neither can we, the progressive majority. Whether Obama is one of them, or simply gaming them and biding his time, we have to push him to push them out. No one in Washington can be trusted until the Right is gone. It’s up to us, not the politicians. They have to be pushed every day. They have to know that the jig is up, business as usual won’t cut it, they’ve put us all in a terrible corner and now they can either change or we will exchange them for something better.
.
While you’re looking at Bayh’s list of donors, why not continue on and note that the leading Dems all accepted money from the same type of companies (ie Pelosi and Senator Schumer accepted money from GoldmanSacs and Citigroup among others). President Obama and Chris Dodd received the top two recipients of money from AIG. We live in a repubic and not a democracy. In a pure democracy, 51% beats 49%. In other words, the minority has no rights. The minority only has those privileges granted by the dictatorship of the majority. So whether you like it or not, the Republicans who are in the minority right now, and all the people who didn’t vote democratic or a conservative democrates, as Bayh, have a right to be heard and stand up for their convictions unless you feel that we are being ruled by a dictatorship!
Jane, just saw your interview on RM’s show and you were great.
Can you please identify the individual senators and representatives in this conservadem cabal?
I hope there are none from my home state of Michigan. If there are, I have many more letters to write….
Fine. How many are putting together coalitions in their own party, seeking to undermine the President’s agenda?
I’m longing for an Obama press conference where the “press” is the DFH bloggers.
I don’t think Rahm would be at the back of the room smirking at that.
Obama would, when so confronted, gain special appreciation for Chuck Todd.
Let’s make it clear that that was the DAD Senator Bayh [Birch Bayh], not the current tea bag son.
You are right. Fell a good distance from the tree, and would not want them confused.
I think I can shed some light on this from Indiana. This group could make the Republicans totally irrelevant while securing reelection for themselves. If the white house budget asks for 3.2 trillion budget and the dems fight back on all fronts and since the media even Fox will eat it up, if Democrats dominate the news… and then they finally end up with a compromise of 3.1 trillion dollar budget haven’t the conservative Democrats and President Obama just made the Republicans totally irrelevant?! I believe so, and I know that Bayh will be re-elected having shown his state what they want him to show them. Evan Bayh became our 32 year old Secretary of State and then became Governor for 8 years before becoming Senator 1998. All of these elections made him the 1st Democrat in those spots for years and years. Yes, our state voted for Obama and we literally screamed with excitement election night, BUT I can tell you that Indiana voted for a Democrat for the first time in 44 years because John McCain wasn’t conservative enough for the majority of our voters so they didn’t vote. And fortunately, for the 1st time our candidate spent time and money here apparently realizing that Republicans weren’t going to vote for McCain. It is amazing to all of us that everyone in the state keeps re-electing Senator Bayh but if he is not on the ballot in 2010 we will lose his seat to a Republican. Maybe things will change after the 2010 cycle if the dems can gain some seats but until then my Senator has to buck his party and I imagine it is the same for the others in this group. Look at our congressional maps and congressmen and you will see what I mean. Slide us through until we can redistrict this country after the census and we will all have a better chance of being represented by Democrats. If and when we have a bigger majority there will be bigger changes!
Hamsher was great on Maddow. I love her. I love them both. With people like this on our side, how can we lose. I’m feeling very positive about this plan. I love this plan. Let’s do it.
Gregg, thanks for this. I missed the show. Jane was terrific, as per usual.
That is why 2012 will be more than revealing. The bubble is such that now, they don’t want to hear that they have the wrong string on the wrong yo-yo, from anyone but those who agree with them. They aren’t accepting emails from their Constituents only. The days of buying elections and stealing votes are over, in some places, but they haven’t received the memo.
I started a petition when I saw Rachel’s show on the 19th. These Conservadems have got me fired up! If you agree, please sign the petition. I am going to send copies to each senator once I get a solid number of signatures.

It is time for a president AND a congress who are willing and able to act.
No more turncoats!
