Oh, the occasional embarrassments of something strange making it into a document dump.
This one, via Josh Marshall, is an all-time great bit of unintentional ironic comedy. Look what made it into a list of emails supporting a stiff sentence for Bernie Madoff in a submission from the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York:

About Firedoglake
At least the “male enhancement” pills aren’t picking on Madoff.
The quality of paralegals at the USA office is suspect. Either that or someone is a prankster.
The third Mt. Redoubt eruption happened about 20 minutes ago. The ash flow is sort of NNE, missing Anchorage, and a bit west of most people in the Mat-Su Valley.
The first ash fall into inhabited areas is starting to happen right now.
Mr. Teller, the “scary smart” Governor of Loisiana (R-Obviously) has told us volcano monitoring is a waste of money. Can’t be happening.
Is.
got my garbage bags, tape, tarps and pantyhose ready.
Pantyhose? The only thing I can think of is ash mask…? Hope the winds stay favorable.
Who needs volcano monitoring research anyway?
sorry stony – missed yer comment
I suspect the latter.
The quality of supervision is suspect.
Good morning, pups. It’s Cohen and Krugman (still no sign of Little Mr. Douthat). Mr. Cohen, in “From Tehran to Tel Aviv,” says one of the strategic issues of the Obama presidency will be a painful but necessary redefinition of America’s relations with Israel as differences over Iran sharpen. Mr. Krugman, back from Yurp, writes about “Financial Policy Despair.” He says if Barack Obama’s bank rescue plan fails, it is unlikely that Congress will come up with more funds to do what should have been done in the first place.
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and the biscuits are out of the oven. It’s 40° degrees here this morning. I’m ready for spring to come back, please… Have a great day.
Good morning MArion
Frankly I think his bank bailout is bound to fail as the motivation of the bankers to do any banking when all the money they need just keeps rolling in from the gumint is little or none. On the other hand if all the damn money was put into the hands of the people that need it, would spend it, and ‘f’ the damn banks we would pretty soon have a viable economy up and running.
It is still 23 here this AM, regardless I put in peas yesterday just before it snowed!!
Which holds the greater danger spouting off, Redoubt or Palin?
ET -
Watching a rerun on C-Span Q&A of part of the Ted Stevens special they’re doing. What’s the word on this Rich Mauer reporter with ADN?
I get 3 or 4 of these e-mails per day.
they’re very imaginative, and theoretically, I’m makin’ a pretty good chunk of change.
Being something of a connoisseur of these letters, I’d give the one shown above a seriously low grade. Dude’s only offering 10%? Lame-ass story too – no one is dying or anything?
I think that my favorite was the one from the F.B.I., signed by Robert Mueller (who has a kinda funky-looking e-mail addy, btw).
Did you watch the Pearl Fryar documentary last night? It really was wonderfully well done.
Write the rest of the damn thing yourself.
I’m going out to buy bottled water and bear traps.
There’s a guy in my hometown that got sucked into one of these email scams. He’s not a very bright guy and he thought he had $15,000 in his acct. He got arrested for passing bad checks. Charges were eventually dropped but he has to pay back the $15,000. Evil people.
I heard on the radio obama is not going to support the 90 percent tax on bonuses
I am REALLY getting pissed with this guy, he BETTER get that money back from a differant avenue if he’s going to undermine congress
I represented a young lady for more or less the same thing. In her case, she was told that she’d hit a (Canadian) lottery, but that after she deposited her (forged) check, she needed to take care of “the taxes” immediately. She caught a C Felony Forgery (2-8 years) charge, and I didn’t think I was ever gonna get the goddamned State to drop the charge…
Even located and talked to the guy behind the scam, and he said (essentially) “yeah, that was me, and there isn’t a thing you can do about it”. And he was right; brought in the RCMP, but no joy.
And my client is also still paying off her bad checks.
What is it about human nature that so many people do. not. accept. the reality of “if it sounds too good to be true, it IS too good to be true”?
Ah, the Republic of the Congo letter. I got a couple of these, years ago. Are they STILL sending these out, or did someone just shove an old letter into the “Madoff Outrage” stack?
Are they STILL sending these out…
oh yeah – they’re back – I’ve gotten four of ‘em since I went to bed last night.
I got 2 last week.
I felt so sorry for the guy I know. Just not very bright. So, of course, that made him a perfect prey. Send out a few thousand email, you’re bound to find one or two patsies.
The scam he got sucked into had to do with being a secret shopper.

that question’s above my pay grade, but I think that one whole hell of a lot of businesses and individuals, from State Lotteries to the Madoff’s of the world, are pretty happy that they don’t.
P.S. In my client’s case, she did in fact play on-line lotteries quite a bit. Just thought that she’d finally hit one….
Oh, lor’….don’t get me started on the subject of lotteries….:-(((

those are still out there too.
The “nigerian” scam email. Trivial compared to our government’s way of fleecing the people to give to their contributors. But I think they forget one thing. We know who gave you the money, and we know you gave them the money. You don’t stand a chance on the streets now due to your being an admitted criminal. You would be better off behind bars where there are so many that will understand you. Bernie, meet Dukey. Dusty, meet Gorilla Snot. That is just his nickname. He used to be shooter.
jayt- Do I gather that eventually you DID get the DA to drop the charges?
grrrr – the prosecutorial mind…
