A retention bonus is like a signing bonus. You give it to people who have an excellent record in expectation that they’ll continue to do excellent work.
What the fuck is with the notion of giving “retention bonuses” to people who have screwed everything up?

Suz you missed the good news….. Feb CT – no new nodules…… increases were very small (0.2-0.3cm) and one SHRUNK ….. 0.5 cm……. shrunk did ya hear…… woohoo…
no, of course not. but there are no doubt legal and ethical ways of deterring future misconduct by people like the AIG losers. such as prison terms and large fines. I hope NY Atty General Cuomo is exploring those options as we speak.
the point of all that being that we the taxpayers do not need to pay millions of dollars in bonuses to these slimebags to get them to stay around and clean up their mess. we can make them offers they can’t refuse. IF our public officials have the fortitude to do so.
No one has been able to answer the one question I have about the bonuses….. this was to the London financial services division……. congress wants to tax it but how many of those employees are US taxpayers?
i’ve not heard that question nor the answer katy – i would think they would likely be londoners – and not subject to us taxes. but that is just a wild assed guess

The CDSs should be voided. They were cynical hardball – churning fees and disguising/enabling risks. Everyone involved knew exactly what they were doing.
Every legal opinion rendered on those transactions (and there are undoubtedly tons of them) should be made public, let the chips fall where they may.
They weren’t bad judgment, exuberance or aggressive financing. They were criminal interactions among players. Folks must be imprisoned if we hope to salvage our financial system. Justice must be done and be seen to be done.

Judging by the comments after his article, they’ve yet to become significantly smarter.
Oh, wow! a world-class consultant, too. Excellent. Excellent news.
Thanks for the compliment, but I didn’t see your reply before I commented. Ya did fine.

I know sweetie…….. not going into my rant on money and cancer research…..
the hardest thing to cope with is that there is no cure for kidney cancer, Interlukin is the only drug that seems to make it go into remission but for only a very small percent (5-15%). All the current drugs just pushes the end further out…… I have heard of KC patients living 8-16 years after diagnosis but that is not common.
Thankfully I was diagnosed when there are several drugs that do push the end out and there are quite a few new ones in the pipeline. Now if we can get congress to approve MORE for KC research ….. we can do better than $1.5 million from last year right?
Might have made this point around here before, but I saw an interview on Charlie Rose with Watson of Watson/Crick, and a bio researcher. They agreed that the Bush Administration was a disaster for medical research. That’s particularly telling, I think, because usually that’s the last kind of research politicians want to cut (assuming it’s not military, of course).
It’s one thing Obama seems to be doing better on. There’s a lot of ground to be made up, though.

From what I can gather….. AIG got more money in bailout than ALL cancer research funding in the US…… the big name cancers, lung & prostate received around $100 million in research dollars last year.
No it was fall of 2007 because it was after the surgery to remove my kidney….. I was wearing those granny pants with the elastic waist…. The pictures are on my FB site

Retention bonuses to people whom you should pay to leave.
What the fuck?

maybe “retention bonus” means you are paying them to “retain” all your dirty little secrets, as in not blab about them after you leave.

hi you all;)
Life is too crazy now. And I though it would get better somehow, after the election. It is a long slog.
tis 41 and for the first time since friday, there is no wind.
this is part of finding out all the bullshit that went on during the bush years margot. i fear it is only the tip of the iceberg
went to St. Pat’s day parade today. Sunny, and I’m sure it was over 80 f, did not hear an official high
A windy time of year…
when i lived in sf, i never missed a st patricks day parade. of course, that was back in the 70’s. it was great.
SO last week, we hear about Cheney’s assassination squad, then the ICRC report on torture. Now everybody is following the bright shiny AIG bonus story.
What great luck for the Bush mob.
won’t let me read the iditarod race article without registering :( so i went to the race web page
I know how to find out how warm it is, I know how to find out how warm it’s supposed to get
I don’t know how to find out how warm it got
weather dot com should provide ya with that info – just type in the city and state and the day’s info should come up
the aig hearing is tomorrow morning – the other stories about the cesspool created during bush cheney, such as the assassination squad and torture are not going away.
This year’s race is interesting. The wind storm near the end is bunching up about 20 teams on the edge of the Bering Sea.
isn’t that the area where winds are usually a problem? the free tracker only tracks 6 mushers
neuro, seems I recall a bru-ha-ha about natl weather service putting that info online, because it could be sold to a fee-charging entity :(
thanks suz, did not know about that site
so it actually only got to 78 today officially…
daffodils are coming up, and some of the trees are starting to flower
i put up some spring is springing photos over at my place, included some of the daffs.
I think the “free tracker” part of the site is forked up.
it took forevah to load
I checked that out, Suz. that’s what I actually meant to say–daffodils are blooming, not just coming up
rather than “retention” bonuses, what they ought to do is prosecute some of those AIG people for defrauding the shareholders with their reward-for-failure schemes, then maybe part of the plea-bargain could be explaining to their successors how they screwed things up and how to fix it
i wanna hear there are grand jury indictments being announced in the morning.
Listening to Metallica’s song All Nightmare Long.
It’s a good title for this fucking recession and AIG mess.
Suz you missed the good news….. Feb CT – no new nodules…… increases were very small (0.2-0.3cm) and one SHRUNK ….. 0.5 cm……. shrunk did ya hear…… woohoo…
then, bust out their headlights and windshields and scratch their paint jobs, metaphorically speaking, “before they cheat again.”
woohoo!!! good news indeed katy (big ass smile on my face)
I’m happy for you to hear that, katy
We’ve got tons of blooming bradford pears and *glorious* weeping cherries.
But, WTF do many folks prune their weeping cherries every fall? They look like blunt-cut lampshades.
for some of them that would include revoking their attorney licenses, or broker licenses, or whatever kind of professional credentials they have
metaphorically speaking of course
my video choice tonight in no way at all encourages going after cheats of any sort in the manners depicted.
I’m on a two day snoopy dance marathon…..
only two?
citrus trees are in bloom….. nothing more heavenly is the combined smell of orange, lemon and grapefruit…. and the jasmine is getting ready too…
hey tomorrow will put it into day three… ;)
Katy, went to bed last night with a very big grin on my face about that.
You are a model of grace under pressure and your sharing is a real gift to us.
no, of course not. but there are no doubt legal and ethical ways of deterring future misconduct by people like the AIG losers. such as prison terms and large fines. I hope NY Atty General Cuomo is exploring those options as we speak.

getting down to the basics: actions have consequences
“offers they can’t refuse” referring to legal remedies
not been very graceful about my hair falling out……
