Richard Cohen wants you to remember:
First, let me state my credentials: I am a funny guy. This is well known in certain circles…
And he proved it after Stephen Colbert’s performance before Bush and the media nearly three years ago.
Commentary, though, is also what I do, and it will make the point that Colbert was not just a failure as a comedian but rude.
So who better to condemn Jon Stewart this morning than Cohen?
The hunt is on for culprits and scapegoats, and Stewart has served up a cliche: the media. As with the war in Iraq, for which credulous media should take some responsibility, the sins are blown out of proportion.
And Cohen’s sins — especially — are blown out of proportion, for example, invading Iraq, not because of evidence, but because Colin Powell said so:
Only a fool — or possibly a Frenchman — could conclude otherwise.
Any other punchlines about Iraq, Dick?
In a post-Sept. 11 world, I thought the prudent use of violence could be therapeutic.
Therapeutic…and funny.
C’est la vie.

What, you couldn’t find a picture of Cohen?
Good job, though, of photoshopping Alfred E. Newman’s picture.
You came pretty close to Cohen’s likeness.
Fred Hiatt paid for today’s column ny Cohen. Whadda maroon.
Thanks Attaturk.
Cohen’s
imaginedcomedic skills remind me of Lt. Steven Hauk, played so ably by Bruno Kirby (RIP) in GOOD MORNING VIETNAM.Fred Hiatt’s editorial page is calling for an investigation (not prosecution) into the torture accusations. Although the editorial is the usual flawed Hiatt editorial, at least it’s a start. That ICRC report really shook them up!
The Truth About Torture
An independent panel must ferret out the facts.

Anne Applebaum, columnist at WaPo is also calling for investigation but only of CIA prisons. In addition, she is calling for leaders to be held accountable. Another flawed piece but better than nothing.

By the way –
Happy St. Patty’s Day!
Cohen and his unfunny, wrong-headed opinions are part of the reason I no longer subscribe to the online Post. However, given Anne Applebaum’s call for an investigation into CIA prisons has me rethinking my previous position. Her idea doesn’t go far enough, though: Congress should investigate ALL potentially illegal moves of the Bush admininstration, including the Cheney assassination team, Guantanamo, etc.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all.
Everytime I see Cohen’s picture, I think he is really a lightly disguised David Letterman. His columns are looking like mean sarcastic Letterman skits.
Maybe there was a mistake and it was published two weeks too early.
But, beside that fact that two of the major points of the article are totally wrong, I see no problems. Stewart did not single out Cramer, Stewart went after CNBC, and Cramer went out and yelled “Bring It On!” with disastrous results.
And half a dozen world famous economists have been warning about a financial crisis for several years. Krugman, Stiglitz, Shiller and Galbraith come immediately to mind. Then there is Dr Dooom Roubini.
As for Cohen trying to convince us that it is OK for a major business news organization to be completely incompetent because it was only just as much more clueless as would be expected than a very wise and immensely knowing man like himself was? Well, that is just Cohen displaying he reasoning powers of a daft pompous, but tragically retarded elderly toddler, or the dry double mind **** of a nasty Letterman skit.
Just by writing this, he made Jon’s points even stronger.
Cohen’s in some dark corner right now laughing because he thinks he “got” Jon.
He didn’t.
(By the way Richard Cohen…Had your chance. Muffed it.)
Jon 2. Media O.
Fuck-off to Richard Cohen and other rich celebrity media hacks, sycophants, and all around dipshits.
Per Annie Appelbaum:
An excellent description of the role of a special prosecutor.
And Jon Stewart is so much more articulate…
Cohen = disingenuous. Criminal at worst.
Good morning and Happy St. Patrick’s Day, pups. It’s Bobo and Herbert this morning. Bobo gives us “The Commercial Republic,” and gurgles that the United States is addicted to the pace of commercial enterprise. After periodic pauses, the country inevitably returns to its elemental nature. Mr. Herbert, in “Stifling an Opportunity,” says Chicago’s politics and notorious “pay-to-play” tradition have stood in the way of a proposed airport, which has the potential to unleash thousands of jobs in the city’s South Side.
Here they are.
The coffee, Irish Breakfast tea and hot chocolate are ready. I’m too decent a person to inflict green grits (a staple down here on this day) on the unsuspecting innocent so I’ve got corned beef hash. I like mine with a poached egg on top, so I’ve got poached eggs too. We had a lovely soaking rain last evening so the azaleas are happy. Have a great day.
they’ve gotten a little slow on their feet, they usually go to the “kill the messenger” strategy immediately, took them about a week this time
Ditto…………
I made a big pot of Irish Oatmeal.
Topped with brown sugar or natural maple syrup, pecans and your choice of dried or fresh fruit.
Cream on the side.
Slightly OT. Last night Barney Frank was on Rachael’s show. He didn’t say outright but strongly implied that AIG hasn’t gotten any money since O has been pres and the current problem is that BushCo didn’t attach any limits on bonuses with the TARP money that they gave them.
Is the part about no money from Obama to AIG true?
And look who they found. A writer of zero quality.

Top O the morin’ to you!
Mark Danner has an excellent article on the ICRC report in the latest NYRB.
oo thanks!
This AIG news is shoving that report back into the shadows.
BTW, my little klynn wants breakfast at your house!
It was just announced he’s, “Skippin’ the oatmeal stuff!
Shorter Cohen:
“It’s not the media’s fault. After all, what can we do?”
And remember: in the Village, Cohen is considered a liberal.
Watching MSNBC (no Joe this a.m.). Par Buchanon looks like he’s aged 20yrs in the last few months. He’s joked that he’s no longer rich, I think he’s taking a beating in the market. It’s been a good conversation. Maria B’s on and they’re talking AIG and the fact that much of the AIG money went straight to Goldman Sachs. It was implied that Paulsen was looking out for his cronies at G-S. No one’s happy with that.
By the Village idiots?
and here’s more on that story from Air America

Interesting. That same article was a recent oxdown diary: http://oxdown.firedoglake.com/diary/4256
It’s a good article, and the Danner article to which it refers is excellent.
