The unprovoked attack by a stranger on a farm family sent shock waves throughout the whole of Minnesota two years ago. Michael Zabawa drove his truck into a ditch one snowy night and then went to the nearest farmhouse for help — and left a husband and son dead, a mother and wife badly injured. No one had the foggiest idea why anyone would do such a heinous thing.
But Jon Tevlin of the Minneapolis StarTribune has discovered some unsettling information about Michael Zabawa — information I had never before seen or heard in the two years this case has been in the public eye locally. Michael’s father, Donald Zabawa, was deeply involved in right-wing terror groups throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including the Posse Comitatus, the Christian Patriots Defense League, and the Christian Identity movement led by James Wickstrom, who he counted as a friend. The elder Zabawa once shot up a police car, beat up a GI in a bar using nunchaku, and traveled all over the Midwest, particularly in Kansas, plotting other violent actions with his Posse associates. He finally met his end in bizarre Spinal Tap fashion, choking on his own vomit after a night of heavy drinking in 1998, when his son Michael was fifteen. When Tevlin told a sheriff in Kansas that Donald Zabawa’s son had been arrested for murder, the sheriff replied "I’m not surprised one bit."
And yet it took two years for this to come out.
So I guess it shouldn’t be so surprising that it took over two months for it to come out to the world outside of Belfast, Maine that what had originally been depicted as a simple domestic-based shooting is what stopped a potential right-wing white-supremacist dirty bomber in his tracks. Or that the father of the would-be dirty bomber in Maine was himself cut from the same obnoxious cloth as his son, and ended up being shot to death himself as a result. (By the way, here’s the FBI report on Jim Cummings, Jr., the Maine dirty-bomber wannabee.) One wonders what else we’re not hearing about.

Sounds like Crooks with right wing group links do not get mentioned in the news. Just who is powerful enough to do this?
Who cares its obvious letting just a few corporations own our media means that the interests of the few are over represented in the news.
News that these Rich White Guys don’t like never happened.
We have FCC laws about owning more than one newspaper, tv channel, radio station in one market we could enforce them.
We do have anti trust laws.
So the terrorists aren’t coming, the terrorists ARE HERE.
You are not a terrorist if you are a rich right wing nut.
Interesting story PW. I would like to hear more about what Amber has to say.
Second biggest modern terrorist attack in this country? Anti-government right wing white male Timothy McVeigh.
Onward, Christian Terrorists!
There are a LOT more of these homegrown right-wing paramilitary/militia wackos than people realize. The government prefers to turn a blind eye until they are forced to act, since these guys tend not to surrender peacefully. I used to have a coworker whose boyfriend had stockpiled enough guns and ammo to start WWIII, all obtained legally.
Well, it’s for a good cause, right?
watertiger is upstairs!
Mr. Steele, Is Our Republican Leaders Learning?
FBI report says Cummings had filled out an application for membership in the “National Socialist Movement”!!!11111!!!!
Can’t these people come up with any new ideas?
AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Phoenix Woman and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
This is not a new phenomenon, the United States of America is the mother of fascism and historically, terrorism is a very important and accepted method of social control originating in the South. We have been cultivating a couple of generations of self identified terrorists from the KKK through the many militias to the Aryan Brotherhood. The prison system and the United States military now are the institutional training grounds for the shock troops of the fascist oligarchy who now have more power through their tax subsidized corporations than the US government.
We are at war with ourselves here at home, a war sponsored by the corporations who have broken our economy and our government and a war that has been extended into the center of the Middle East with no political solution in sight.
This should not be news to anyone anywhere in this country, we are at war with a cancerous part of ourselves that we failed to irradicate 148 years ago and it has now metastisized. I am afraid for my country but I’m more afraid of the threat our cancer poses to the rest of the world.
It’s time to stop pussyfootin’ around, there is no “bi-partisan” middle ground, there is no “third way”, it’s us against the fascists and I think our president is rapidly findin’ this out.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THE WAR IS NOW IN YOUR LIVINGROOM!!
But you can’t be right-wing AND terrorist, right?
I was acquainted with Donnie Z. in ‘81-82, and he was a crazy fucker way back then. He was a friend of a friend, not my friend. He was too crazy for me!
Around here, also in MN, there was a ricin terrorist group (”Toxic Terror”, J B Tucker) a decade or two ago. A friend of mine here used to know all the players. One was a (small) trust fund baby whose father was also a militia type, one had gone through a big personal trauma (his politics started with MADD after his daughter was killed by a drunk driver), and one (the snitch) seemed to be genuinely nuts. Most of them seemed to be stereotypical unsuccessful entrepreneurs.
My take on this is a lot different than you’d expect. By taking a neoliberal, technocrat, top-down, quasi-academic, professional, establishment approach, the Democratic Party has made itself incapable of harnessing public anger. Angry people by default go to the Republicans, even though the Republicans are total fakes completely under the thumb of finance (probably even more so than the Democrats).
It’s sad, because this area was very radical up until about 1940, under the Farmer Labor Party. When the Democrats absorbed the dwindling FL Party, they put an end to all that, and froze out the angry people.
Based on what I know of them, the ricin terrorists didn’t have to be wingers, except that the Democrats and the left rejected them. They were angry partly for legit reasons, and they didn’t have any real political ideas to speak of.
No, I’m not saying that I wish the Democrats had some ricin terrorists of their own. I’m just saying that I wish that the big Democrats as individuals, and the Party itself, could express the anger most Americans feel about recent economic events. But they can’t do it, perhaps because they’re bought and paid for too.
Just wait until the average soldier/prison guard/torturer gets home for the Iraq and Afghan wars….
Good gawd, Phoenix Woman! It never ends. It does make you wonder how many other crimes committed were done by these neo-Nazi, right wing, hateful, extreme types.
Palli is correct. Our streets are going to be that much unsafer if we don’t give our soldiers the necessary tools when they come home to get them through their mental hell.
Clif on my blog listed out a few more cases like this:

Scary!
Dave Neiwart has 2 more, very recent incidents you left out, the Knoxville Unitarian Church shooting and last month’s Florida nutbag hunting foreigners in his condo complex.

and
http://dneiwert.blogspot.com/2…..-open.html
The latter was particularly curious as well due to a distinct lack of teevee media interest. After all it had a pretty, college age girl murdered in a sudden, tragic way. Lunatic that killed her has worked in GOP campaigns previously but was too kooky to be tolerated by the last election season crew.
This is a growing trend for sure.
Uh Oh, Pelosi wants DOJ to loosen newspaper anti-trust laws. (From TPM)
If any of you are interested in supporting an organization that tracks and legally fights hate organizations you may want to look at http://www.splcenter.org (Southern Poverty Law Center). I have contributed to this group for years and find that they have a very successful multi-pronged approach to fighting hate groups through education and civil lawsuits to bankrupt these organizations.
it is possible that William J, Krar has been released from his Texas prison by now.

my old post about this under reported domestic terrorist is here.
I continue to have problems with politicizing crime. We’re better off if we stick to the facts of the crimes and leave the political judgements out of it. For this reason, I want to do away with the notion of “terrorism”. I definitely do not want to expand it to give the Right equal space on the list with the Left .
Let the ordinary criminal justice system deal with criminals. Where necessary, when they organize, nuke them with a RICO prosecution. Then convict them and forget them, as they deserve. Until they commit crimes, ignore them, as they also deserve.
The problem is that a politicized term like “terrorism” muddies the judicial waters and invites panic, fear, and alarm. It ennobles or at least magnifies the threat posed by the criminal. The law should calm the public not inflame it. It should belittle criminals and reveal them in their full degradation and ultimate impotence. It shouldn’t make them supermen.
“Terrorism” lets prosecutors selectively pursue ideological enemies. These last few years, when some hot-headed young animal-rights or eco-action vigilant spray painted a slogan on an SUV or burned an empty house, the Republicans could call it “terrorism” and impose wildly disproportionate penalties for what was actually vandalism or arson on a vacant property. A bankrupt developer who did the same for the insurance was treated much less severely and a neighborhood kid might not be punished at all. If the last eight years have taught us nothing, they teach that terms like “Terrorism” distort the public perceptions and push us to unjust extremes.
“Terrorist” glamorizes behaviors that don’t deserve it. The thug that bombed the federal courthouse and killed hundreds was not a terrorist–he was a cowardly, murderous, little thrill-seeking arsonist whose name I never willingly utter. The same goes for a number of neo-Nazi “Identity” church poseurs that I once met briefly. The ones I knew were lazy, shiftless, dishonest, and resentful of anyone who wasn’t as useless as they were. Pathetic shmucks. Not “terrorists” or even “terorist sympathizers”. The fact that two of their casual associates went on to murder a Denver radio personality with a machine gun did not make anything more of them. It just made them lazy, shiftless, dishonest, resentful, pathetic, murdering shmucks.
So what you have here is a a murderous shmuck. Let’s call him one.
