For school districts across the country, the hits just keep on coming in a very long, very hard season of layoffs.
Over 1000 pinks slips went out in the fifteen districts of Santa Clara County, California (the San Jose area). 122 in Boise, Idaho. Western districts are feeling the pinch, as demonstrated by the 8,843 layoff warnings that went out in Los Angeles. Midwestern districts are getting squeezed, like Kaukauna, Wisconsin. Southern districts aren’t immune, like Charlotte, North Carolina. Up in the snow belt, Pontiac, Michigan is taking a real hit.
Some of these announcements are a "worst case scenario." Districts have to announce who might get let go for next year now, but may end up hiring some of them back in June or July when the budget becomes clearer. Even so, this "worst case scenario" is worse than anyone has seen in a long, long time.
Rich districts, poor districts, my district, your district . . .
But look on the bright side. The FDIC didn’t have to take over any banks yesterday.
Update: The Obama stimulus funds are helping to keep these layoffs from being even worse. Unless, of course, you live in South Carolina:
Remember that adorable, brave little girl sitting next to Michelle Obama during Barack’s first State of the Union address? She wrote in movingly, hauntingly to ask that her falling-down “school” provided by the state be brought up to code.
South Carolina Governor and professional racist Mark Sanford’s decision to turn down $500 million in education funds means that 7,500 teachers in SC will get laid off and schools like Ty’sheoma’s where classes have to stop several times a day when the train rolls by, shaking and rattling the school ain’t getting fixed anytime soon. Sanford is planning to turn down $700 million dollars of Recovery Act funding in all for reasons that just don’t make sense . . .

Peterr! You are able to maintain a positive outlook on this catastrophe, a trait that will serve you well in the uipcoming times.
Here in Maine teachers are giving up part of their income to save the jobs of other teachers who need it:

Wow.
Around here, I’ve heard of a few older teachers who are taking retirement a year or two before they had planned, in part to spare the jobs of some younger teachers.
that’s heartwarming.
No Child Left Behind but All Schools and Teachers Left Behind
AOL had a front pager story about the top 25 worst schools in the nation.
South Carolina was lit up like a Christmas tree with red dots. I think they have around half of the top 25 worst schools.
I bet that Mark Sandford wears that infamy like a badge of honor.
The GOP is determined to turn the US in a rotten to the core nation of many have nots and a few haves.
Look at the quality of life numbers and the South is leading the way in that direction.
Rancid people.

My sister works for in one of the bay area school districts, she is working two different positions, one job on M-W-F and the other on T-TH as the person who had the other position is gone. She was the school district psych. She has to remind herself what job she is working day to day.
It is heartwarming and wonderful, Elliott & Peterr. I love it when union members stand up for other union members. US Congressman Mike Michaud of Maine is the only card carrying Union member in all of the Congress.
Not sure if you’ve all read this article yet, but the Big Man at Beth Israel Hospital has decided to reduce his salary along with the other higher paid employees (they agreed to do it to with tears of happiness in their eyes!) to save the low wage earners of the hospital:

This kind act should go viral in our nation, because what some are forgetting is we are all in this economy together!
if you are a teacher k-12 you sure aren’t in it for the money.
best friend teaches art at a catholic high school. (Other side of the state)her school cut the position of librarian a few years ago. just took a 1/3 pay cut and bigger class load. she wasn’t the only one. she said the curriculum they are offering isn’t up to par. many teachers left. she wanted to, but didn’t find another job. she wants to stay, but is torn that the curriculum is being sacrificed by ignorant decisions from administration…i.e. wanted a religion teacher to teach graphics to add to his class load to justify keeping him full-time. he doesn’t even use a computer.

counties around here, they cut school nurses. for some kids it is the only health care and health education they would/will get.
you would be shocked to see the schools here in se ohio. poorest counties in the state.
good post peterr.

If we got rid of No Child Left Behind how much money for education would we have?
grover norquist and the rest of the republican scabs are laughing their asses off at how well they’re drowned government in their bathtub.
This is absolutely ridiculous

Oh good grief!
I’m sure it was part of a decision that said “everyone with less than seven years experience gets a layoff notice . . .” but if you are looking for an example of cutting off your nose to spite your face, this would be it.
Michigan schools are “privatizing” custodial. Secretarial will be next. At the rate we are going, the few jobs that will be left will all be crappy jobs.
Anticipating such narrow-mindedness the stimulus bill includes a provision that allows state legislatures to override a Governor’s decision not to accept federal funds. I don’t know anything about the composition of the South Carolina legislature, but this may be a possible strategy.
1,495 foreclosure notices in Santa Clara County in February as well. Silicon Valley is hurting. Santa Clara county has about 1.7 million people, this means about 8 people out of 10,000 got a foreclosure notice in February, teacher layoffs amount to 5 teachers fewer per 10,000 residents. Per pupil the layoffs are 2 fewer teachers per 10,000 people under age 18.
Interesting how numbers look different when given per capita isn’t it?
It kind of begs some analysis of what leads to a layoff notice – Merit? Seniority? How much administrative staff is laid off? (After reading the mercury news article – seniority is being used to determine who is laid off).
I am concerned mostly about the cuts in Special Education (my son is autistic). For the Los Angeles Unified School District to be contemplating 8,843 layoffs is sheer madness, particularly since the Obama Administration has, with its Recovery Act, just elevated the Federal funding of Special Education from 17% to 27% of the actual costs (still far short of the promised 40% promised when IDEA passed in 1975).
The purpose of the Recovery Act is to save jobs and maintain (or increase) funding for Special Education. This is vitally important not only for our children with special needs, but for the sense of justice, equality, and fairness in our national educational policies.
Unless you protect the weak and the underrepresented, you will fail as a nation. You don’t need religion to practice morality.
