I had a post all ready to go on something else, but it occurred to me that pretty much everyone and their mums, like farmers, and farmers’ mums, will be watching the damn Daily Show and not reading my otherwise incredibly pithy blog observations on World Events. It’s not often that you get to see a bald nitwit consistently wrong basic cable financial pundit eviscerated on live teevee, after all. Though it may be hard to watch — Cramer seems to be kind of quivering, hardly even able to properly bake pies with Martha, the other Stewart:
CNBC’s Mad Money host Jim Cramer got a warm-up for tonight’s Jon Stewart show by stopping by Martha Stewart’s show today – to bake banana cream pie. When Martha asked him about facing off with Stewart, Cramer said, "I’m a little nervous." She replied: "You should be nervous."
Jim: "Is he going to kill me?" (laughing)
Martha: "He’s fast as lightning."
Jim: "I’m slow as molasses."
Martha: "Ah, no you’re not. But I would take the banana cream pie we are going to make a little later on. … You can either feed it to him if he calms down or you can throw it at him."Later, Jim said, "I mean he’s going to be standing there giving me the business, I’m going to have to fight back. I’m not a doormat. Do I impress you as a doormat?"
Marther: "No way. That’s why I’m going to watch. That’s why everybody in the world is going to watch tonight."
Head to comments for the blow-by-blow. For all you west coasters, I promise there won’t be any spoilers, except for, uh, all the spoilers.

About Firedoglake
Cramer is not quite the brave fellow he was on Scarborough…
Commercial break to allow Cramer to rewrite his script.
He probably soaked his Vitters.
Thersday! Sweet celebration of Teh Snark!
So Cramer beats on dough on Martha Stewart’s show and Jon Stewart has the comeback, “Mr. Cramer, don’t you destroy enough dough on your own show?” Of course he notes that she’s the one who went to jail on securities fraud. The D. goes to jail. What else is new?
If Cramer had any shame, he would be wearing kneepads right now.
Alas…
Hey Thers!
It’s only just begun.. and Stewart has delivered mega blows without breaking a sweat.
Cramer is doing a royal kiss up. What a tool.
Stewart is being too nice. Also, Thers = eleven Hitlers.
fork i’m time zone challenged from participating in all teh snark
Stewart points out that Cramer ran a hedge fund and Cramer said “hyperbolic.”
If Cramer had any shame, he would not be on CNBC.
Cramer is quite busted by this video about him encouraging short selling…
Likewise.
I don’t watch that network, but if indications are correct, that is exactly where he belongs.
Stewart, bless his heart, is doing what he did to Crossfire—at least he’s doing the same kind of “shame on you.”
Thank you Jon!!!!
The strong dollar should mean I am only = six Hitlers.
Me neither. Don’t have any money to begin with and I wouldn’t trust those asshats if I did.
This is great!
Cramer sez, wow we shoulda coulda.
That’s great. Jon usually saves his best slammin for Hitchens.
Not just the “D.” The little lady goes to jail, but the big manly man is “just joking around.”
Cramer, is saying in essence, “yes, Godfather. What do you want me to do? It’s done.”
But we all know it ain’t gonna happen.
Damn! You mean that the dollar has dropped against the Hitler? Now how are we going to short sell all those rightwing asshats? Nobody else will buy them.
Cramer sez golly gee why didn’t Jon Stewart call us out sooner.
Stewart is no longer being nice.
”This isn’t a game. I can’t tell you how f—ing angry that makes me.”
Cramer sez he was a tool. We agree.
Yeah, ’cause a comedian is just the oversight we needed.
a comedian is providing more oversight than any of the forking regulatory agencies are
Why is he not being arrested?!? Completely illegal and proudly admitting on tape.
Sounds like he’s just gonna do the “Aw shucks, ya know I just screwed up but look how down to earth I am, so let’s just be buds, ‘kay?” Bill O’Loofah does this same thing and mostly gets away with it. These “people” deserve no airtime or respect whatsoever.
It seems to be the only oversight we’ve got.
Pathetic, ain’t it?
Cramer sez who coulda thougt.
That is because there was a clown in charge.
This is almost painful. Cramer is completely cornered. The videotape says he knew what was going on and thought it was all fun and games.
You will never, ever see anything like this anywhere else on the television.
U betcha. and isn’t that sad.
OK, Stewart is ripping him a new one. I withdraw my previous comment.
i sure as hell hope our congresscritters and those in charge of regulatory agencies are watching this
or will be when it airs in their time zone
So do you think anyone at the SEC might could be watching Jon Stewart lay out their case for them tonight?
So when Cramer goes on the Today show tomorrow, will he refer to Jon as a ‘comedian’ again?
Fucking amazing Jon Stewart the voice of reason !
Looks like this is going to be the whole show. Wow.
Honestly, I have never seen anything quite like this. Cramer really should not have come on, for his own self-interest… glad he did, though.
I would hope that at least Barney Frank and Chris Dodd are. That would be a start.
We are watching a true classic here folks! It’s almost as good as sex. Good sex.
fyi – for people who have comedy central on their tv. if i heard correctly today during the house financial services committee hearing, simon johnson is going to be on the colbert show.
How many Hitlers am I down to? Are they dancing Hitlers?
Too bad Jon didn’t have a shot at Bernie Madoff on the air.
Evisceration! No way anyone should worry about “spoiling”. This is so good I know i will watch it twice. (Tivo running)
Jon is GREAT when he’s serious. He’s serious tonight.
You are six hitlers and three dancing leprechauns.
You are right of course. But what in Hell could Cramer have expected after the last few days?
He’d McCain-Letterman his way through?
They should sell a boxed set of the Cramer shows. It would be a hot seller.
the SEC that obama chose mary shapiro to head?
from LA Times:
maybe. but not going to count on it.
The news tomorrow will be how Stewart takes this guy apart at the joints, and where the fuck is Congress?
Way.To.Go.
Whoo hoo!
whoa .. we need to get jon to take on the yoo memos and the torture issue .. screw congress ..
It would be cathartic if only Cramer and those of his ilk had souls or consciences.
I’m not convinced they do.
I’ll second that.
Stewart must have lost a mint.
Standing O for Stewart.
He deserves to win every award there is for broadcast JOURNALISM. Hell, make some new ones to give him.
Didn’t his parents get hosed?
This is the best and most important financial coverage I’ve seen maybe ever, and it’s on a comedy show.
Sounds like a wonderful show!!! I can’t wait to watch it! I will be sure to get my schedule clear for tonight!
the meaning of hitlers and dancing leprechauns is, i’m afraid, beyond my comprehension.
sad in a way that this ends up on a satire based show and not in MSM
Colbert isn’t going to tag-team Cramer with Stewart?
I think it was his parents who lost lots—he kind of intimated it on another show this week.
Pulitzer.
Stewart mentioned his parents getting hosed a couple of days ago, and I thought it was a joke. I don’t think so any more.
I think Yoo is too smart to go on TDS. Remember that he had that Berkeley gig before he became Dubya’s houseboy, so he can’t be all that stupid. Then again, Rice was a dean at Stanford. I take that back, he really could be that stupid.
Peter Singer will be his guest—that’s what I thought I heard.
Just done. Wow. Cramer had better lawyer up. Maybe that’s why he went to see Martha Stewart today. She was giving him the names of hers.
In any case, CNBC and Cramer are only one sordid layer of the rotting pile of manure. The mechanisms to steal money from the middle class and move it upscale are legion. This is just today’s denouement.
Stewart’s anger would suggest that he himself lost money in the market collapse
$5.1 billion
$114 Million
Cramer surveys the smoldering ruins of his ‘career’ and asks himself how he could have underestimated the guy who took down a franchise rag at CNN? What a doofus.
Should be used for generations in business schools.
About time we hear someone say For Shame, in many more words.
Generally, Thers is worse than ten Hitlers. And dancing leprechauns frequently appear on his “web log.” But with the exchange rates…
Stewart on Yoo won’t happen — but he should have on any journalist/pundit who botched that story.
After tonight though, they’ll be running for their lives.
Hers didn’t do so well for her, did they?
On second thought—by all means, let him hire her lawyers.
Be nice if they stayed hiding under their beds for a few weeks.
And Larry Craig’s as well.
Thers, thank you for putting up a live blog thread for TDS. Not being able to do this because of the spoiler threat has been a real drag. I, for one, appreciate being able to share TDS with others at the Lake.
is this stewart / crammer interview as good as when steward went on crossfire? for that i’ll blow $1.99 and download it from itunes.
and Scooter Libby’s too while we’re at it.
yes.
But if you wait until tomorrow, it will be all over the internets and you might be able to download it off a youtube or C&L clip.
And of course, you can always watch it on the TDS web site.
I for one will have to wait for the early rebroadcast tomorrow. Show comes on well past my bedtime here.
ahh dr. i once though yoo was “smart” too .. but then i got to read his “legal opinions” .. i beg you consider the dif a’twixt smart and simply “too clever by half” .. :)
dugg
Note to Tweety: this is how it’s done.
wow. thanks. will get it. i have the crossfire ep on dvd somewhere – pure genius.
Simon Johnson on Colbdert.
or his staff’s 401K plan.
It is that good and much more. Don’t you think it will be on the TDS web page in a few hours?
Usually I would respect teh spoilers, but this is kind of a special occasion. Anyway, this show went as you’d expect in a best-case scenario: you can’t really “spoil” it except to get rid of the tension as to whether it’s worth watching — yes, it is.
Note to
Tweetythe entire press corps: this is how it’s done. There, fixed it for you.
The ComCent site is being bombarded right now. Very very slow to load.
I’ve got it on my iPod along with countless TDS and TCR as well as Olberman clips. Fun things to collect. Quite a history lesson.
thank you
Thanks, dude.
This is the kind of thing that could even make it to the newspapers—at least those that wouldn’t be embarrassed by having been trumped by a comedian.
Then again . . . never mind.
wow .. cramer went to a battle of wits totally unarmed .. is “mornin’ joe” next .. [i hope i hope] i see gold in them thar hills .. imagine the amount of material faux news supplies on a “daily” basis for this type of deconstructive truthiness ..
I thin Stewart may have just earned himself a substantial raise.
sad but true, your fix is more appropriate.
re simon johnson. here’s what i wrote for the hearing this morning:
And which would those be?
The MSM’s problem is that once one net covers it, the rest will have to follow.
NBC is going to have to take their medicine tomorrow, or explain why not.
Wow, we have just witnessed a classic which will be viewed for years and years.
And perhaps the collapse of a “career”.
Did you hear Cramer say he was basically going to stop doing the entertainment and take up the cause? Cramer crying uncle. It was a work of art. I cannot name another “journalist” who I’ve seen do what he just did.
I’m sure this was so much worse than Cramer thought it would be.
Just awesome.
I can only hope that when Big Al Franken hits the Senate we’re going to get used to the comedian take-down.
The fact that McCain never broke a sweat last year until he appeared on The View illustrated how rancid and useless the Press Corpse has become.
Jon Stewart is Alan Grayson with a bigger salary and no restrictions whatsoever.
I think after this he’s gonna need to crawl into a hole somewhere. His personal appearance days are over. Unless he thinks that Stewart will now leave him alone. If he thinks that, he’s more of a fool than he’s shown us already.
and a bigger megaphone
I wanna see it!!!
Wow, just Wow! Jon is my hero. And my 401K is in the shitter, too.
You’re assuming that BigMedia, print or broadcast, care about journalism.
They don’t.
They’ll give it some coverage since so many people are talking about it and it can’t seem TOO obvious, but for the most part they’ll try to keep the damage minimal. They exist to prop up the the corrupt and fundamentally flawed system, and Cramer is one of their troops in the trenches, so they’ll provide cover.
We really must stop calling Jon a comedian. He is a journalist in every sense of the word. Maybe a hybrid name like journedian or satiralist would be more apt.
He’s probably getting coached by David Gregory…:-)
I don’t know. These guys have huge egos and Cramer has amply demonstrated that his is even larger than most.
I’m not holding my breath on that one.
My guess is that they will do their best to ignore it and put Cramer himself off to pasture, at least for a while, hoping it will blow over.
I don’t think Brian Williams or David Gregory will want to touch it.
I am afraid to even look.
More like Tucker Carlson. But yeah.
even though i couldn’t watch, it was fun to read all of your reactions. thanks.
As the clip from few years back shows, Cramer can lie and lie and lie without any regret or show any signs that he’s lying. He’s probably doing it know as a damage control measure.
He’s not going anywhere…unless he’s arrested.
Hee hee.
I mean, you can’t “spoil” a car crash, you have to see it. Or the circus. There’s really nothing to spoil, it’s just a spectacle.
Appearing on TDS was a tactic, probably insisted upon by his bosses. Public penance, take your lumps and hopefully tame the tiger. Safe bet Cramer hasn’t learned anything substantive or lasting in the process
The court jester was always the truth teller. The rest of the court was never smart enough to get it.
But no one with a pulse will ever take his word for anything ever again. And I would be just fine with that.
Check it out online when it comes up. It’ll be all over the place.
Bingo!
Don’t look — we sat around at work and stared at one another in disbelief. “Who could have predicted…”
who has ever come out of the confessional box and never sinned again?
you are assuming that his audience at CNBC are people who are likely to watch TDS.
Never understood the allure of (confessional) boxing…
Karl Rove appears almost daily somewhere in BigMedia and is treated as a respectable pundit. Cramer will be just fine IMO. They’ll circle his wagons and prop him back up, just as they’ve done and are doing to Rove right now. This is the whole game they run.
He didn’t seem very convincing on the clip Thers put up. Seemed like a liar.
Big Media is like prostitution with the service element removed.
Not after admitting that he gamed the system. Guys got some problems to look forward to.
Hope you’re correct. It’ll have to law enforcement IMO, since BigMedia will be trying to save his hide.
yeah ..you’re right stagg ..somehow commejurno doesn’t have the same ring .. in the old days incisive but funny journos were called ’satirists’ in the tradition of say will rodgers ..
Well that, and BigMedia is much more diseased.
we can all hope so.
Unlike the Crossfire clip—which was just about egos— it looked to these not-lawyer eyes like Jon had film on him confessing to doing things that just might not have been legal. Anyone here with more insight into what he admitted doing?
I’m off to bed. Those young minds aren’t going to corrupt themselves in the morning.
Thanks Thers. That show was so good I’m staying up late for the repeat.
I’d love to see Jon take on Michelle Caruso-Cabrera of CNBC. She’s been
sounding like a paid hack lately. Maybe GE’s drop in stock price has the
NBC $$$$ people a bit nervous about their contract renewals.
Just put him on Rushmore and let history decide.
They need us to get the job done! Niters DrDick!
he thinks he can just bygones this and it will go away
ComCent has freaking great lawyers. I would assume Jon consulted with them recently.
g’nite dr dick
Has Jon ever had Geithner on his show?
I must retire also. Evening, all.
Anyone know if Fitz ever watches the show?
That clip would never have been seen without the New Media. Still get shivers thinking what things would be like if the Internet wouldn’t have developed when it did. The American Experiment would be over by now. I really believe that.
When it came out in the Scooter Libby trial that Cheney’s office considered Tim Russert a useful tool, he paid no penalty. After his untimely demise, his colleagues shed a river of tears and lauded his alleged integrity. Big Media is an exclusive club and they take care of their own. Actual insight and professionalism are not required of members, merely that they know which butts to kiss.
Thanks Thers for TDS blogging thread. What a show. Night!
In a world of any real sanity, no one would ever give Cramer, or CNBC, or any financial news network any credibility again. Seriously, this interview should have the same impact on financial reporting as this photo did for the Vietnam War. However, by midday tomorrow the “he said she said” spin will overtake Stewart’s cold, clear truth-telling. If there were any equitable justice in the world, CNBC would shut itself down tomorrow after a day’s worth of apologies for being the public fluffers for an entire array of Wall Street and corporate criminals. Cramer, Santelli, and their ilk are the financial world’s Billy Mays(es), selling this toxic shit to their viewers as hard and fast as they can shill. I imagine that if you were to sit Mays down for an interview, he would calmly tell you that what he does is actually expose OxyClean for the ripoff product that it is.
Cramer said he would cut out the overcaffeinated “shenanigans” (what he does is shenanigans — what he reports is criminal behavior) and begin doing some real, adversarial journalism on his show. I’ll bet you my entire 401K that come Monday he’ll be screaming and throwing plastic livestock around his studio again. (Joke’s on you — I don’t have a 401K.)
Monster thread. Thanks and nite Thers
g’nite thers
Me too. But first I have to set the TiVo to record the replay.
Those of you who have yet to see it—savor every minute. It’s worth it. Tomorrow evening when the 8:00 replay comes up I’m going to pour a nice cognac or Grand Marnier to enjoy while I watch it again. BooYa.
G’nite Thers, DrDick and everyone else, as I am powering down also.
Excellent point.
yup.. i aint taking that bet
and hi – welcome to late nite – if its just my faulty memory and you are not new, the hi stands
Some will try and brute their way through, but the effort will be for naught.
And welcome to Late Nite.
g’nite ratfood
only 10 diggs? this fantabulous thread has only 10 diggs?
FORK… screwed up the links.. this is the real one
I absolutely agree. The great experiment would have been gone without the tubes.
Nite ratfood!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5JkHBC5lDs
nite rat
True, but they never really proved other ways Russert had been used or what agenda he actually promoted. Less I missed it…
Timmeh was an all-purpose shitheel.
Sorry, Luke.
Nite Thers, thank you!
They didn’t see it as their job. We were the ones covering Timmeh’s rather persistent lame assed “journalamism.” I would imagine that if an indie study was done on who he fluffed and who he attacked it would become pretty obvious. But since he’s no longer of this world it won’t happen.
Enough for one night. Sleep calls, and then tomorrow’s reruns.
‘night all.
Agreed, but was anything Timmeh did for Cheney proven?
Night RevDeb. Nice to see you.
Except for what we witnessed at the trial, the convention coverage, and on Sunday mornings, I know of nothing.
Hey Margot! I was off checking gmail and stuff — did you see the show? Pretty wild, yes?
Stewart needs to find footage of that chimp or orangutan the gives stock tips and see if he went bearish long before MSNBC…or maybe find footage of Punxtawsawney Phil and show the btter correlation of Phil’s guesses vs. Cramer’s!
HA! He was definitely a tool, no doubt. But proving that he worked for Cheney is another issue. Course I entered the internets rather late (2005), and had to find my way to safe sites.
Dugg!
Hiya neuro, what a show. How are you? We are up late listening to Silly Wizard and Land o’ the Leal.
Colbert totally pwned Cramer last week! The damn kittens and puppies are just too much.
Suzanne is upstairs with music!
Late Late Nite FDL: Gives You Hell
Yeah, when I heard today that Karl Rove is THE most influential Twitterer in DC I wanted to vomit.
What a pack of sociopaths to still want to hear anything that congenital liar has to say.
I’ll say it again, these people should be greeted with a hail of rotten food wherever they go.
-G
Fixed for you.
Up!
It is interesting to watch Tweety squirm, about this. He loves the MSM (is one of them), yet sometimes Keith seems to have gotten to him.
A good example is of him interviewing Ari Fleischer (or Tom DeLay). He asks some hard questions, and makes them mad — esp. Ari — but usually by the end of the program, he makes nice and says they are good buds.
One day, I think his head will explode.
New to both LateNite and FDL, so thanks. Won’t be posting much in the late night threads because, like the earlier poster, I, too, am in charge of corrupting young minds during the daylight hours, but Stewart’s steamrolling of Cramer kept me up.
