I called WCSH Channel 6 here in Maine when the story broke to find out if they were going to report on it. I was freaking out to them too about this case, and “Ken” at the news desk said that none of the officials have confirmed the FBI’s report concerning the radioactive materials found in Cummings’ home, so they refused to report it. I said, “Well, don’t you think this is a security issue for our state and should at least be mentioned?”. He said, “Nope”.

My bold 2 kinds of Depleted Uranium and we can tell the difference between the two so we can begin to figure out where this Nut got the Uranium from.
Was it the by product of enriched Uranium for a reactor or a by product of a nuclear reactor.
Also just what kind of Depleted Uranium is used on tanks or are both kinds used? If only one kind of Depleted Uranium is used hopefully we can rule out the troops bringing cracked pieces of tank armor home.

If some of these wingnuts were to plant an explosive device at the corporate headquarters or the broadcast offices of one of the “liberal” media I wonder if they would notice then? The police/FBI don’t appear to be covering this up. The reason why Amber Cummings was not arrested for the murder of her husband after she called the police and told them she had done it…is because the police/FBI quickly learned who her husband was. It wasn’t until the FBI document that talked about the radioactive materials & the instructions to make a dirty bomb was posted that Amber was then arrested. I think the police/FBI are on her side and realize that she actually saved a lot of people from being killed by her wingnut husband. This is my take on it, because there isn’t really another good explanation I’ve heard to reason why the police waited almost 2 months to arrest her for murder after she confessed to them.

Uranium metal (generally DU since its more readily available) is available from a variety of sources, including occationally eBay.

DU is uranium which is almost 100% pure U-238; this is the stable isotope, mildly radioactive, not suitable for use in fission applications – those require U-235. The health issues with DU are supposedly related to the chemical nature of the metal rather than the radioactivity.

You will do more harm with DU by throwing it at someone than in attempting to make a “dirty bomb” with it. Gamma sources like the cesium, strontium etc. isotopes mentioned in the source articles are the real “bad actors” in a dirty bomb.

UPS and all the shippers should just by a Geiger Counter and I’m sure we got radar equipment that can detect lead shielding.
Every package goes past the Geiger Counter and lead shielding detector on the conveyor belt.
If you get a beep from either device and the package has no government radioactive sign on it take the package off the line and call the bomb squad.

The FBI report also stated there was evidence linking James Cummings to white supremacist groups. Victims say the weapons are being used on the “targets” to induce symptoms of mental illness and cognitive impairment — in a campaign to have them declared mentally ill and thus “neutralized.”

These are crimes against humanity, enabled by federal programs and policies that have co-opted and corrupted local law enforcement, which is dependent upon federal funding from the agencies that devised these “programs of personal destruction.”

It is time for local authorities to reclaim their autonomy, and their respect for Constitutional rights. There is a new administration in Washington, one that has pledged to uphold the Constitution.

Local and regional officials and law enforcement officers who renounce community gang stalking and prosecute those who have persecuted their neighbors will be praised as upholders of the Constitution and defenders of the rule of law.

Those who continue to enable the violation of civil and human rights may find themselves under scrutiny as the new team in Washington makes good on its pledge to restore American values and respect for the rights granted to all citizens under the Constitution of the United States.

Well, I posted a commentary about my first-hand knowledge of domestic torture via radiation weaponry, enabled by federal programs that fund and equip an irregular army of citizen vigilantes in every county in the U.S.

Now maybe the firedoglake people thought I was hijacking their thread. Or maybe the “G-men” got to somebody, or made it look like the story was posted when it was not. After what I have experienced as a journalist and an innocent “target” of this American Gestapo, anything is possible.

So let me just say that the story above, while interesting, does not begin to plumb the depths of American fascism and the torture of innocents with the most horrific hand-held weaponry in history.

Interesting, but not all that scarey.

Depleted uranium is the leftovers from uranium-enrichment processes and is mostly U238. It is less radioactive than naturally occurring uranium ore (pitchblende). The military uses it in weapons because it is heavier than lead, harder than steel, and easy to come by in the nuclear age–not because it is radioactive or explosive.

So if the wingnuts spend their time on DU instead of the ANFO that they used in Oklahoma, it is probably a good thing.

In fact, the analyses I’ve read online and old physics courses both indicate that even a real radiologic (”dirty”) bomb made with medical-grade cesium or strontium radioisotopes would be a lot less lethal than the ANFO.

So let’s not perpetuate the Bushco disinformation about WMDs that aren’t really weapons and are definitely incapable of anything approaching “mass destruction”. The terrorist weapons that are dangerous are the unsexy ones: fuel oil, fertilizer, and good, old NRA firearms.

I don’t have the link, but with $10 million a year income just about anything is possible. Various weapons manufacturers have stockpiles of depleted uranium, for instance. Wouldn’t be hard to buy or steal. Rightwingers inhabit the arms industry (and bio-weapons industry, etc, cough, cough, anthrax, cough). Plenty of them would be willing to provide it for a price. Your skepticism is appreciated but is a bit overwrought on this for some reason. Why are you not willing to believe it?

Exactly…DU is really dangerous because it is a heavy metal and can cause metal poisoning akin to lead-poisoning. Theoretically, if vaporized one might happen to get an active U-234 atom. But the exposure would have to be intense in quantity or longterm (as in shrapnel), and the effect of the radiogenic material is likely to be orders of magnitude less than simply having a heavy metal poisoning your blood. This material is probably the least dangerous of radioactive material that could be used in a dirty bomb. There are other medical radiogens that are out there that are far, far worse.

You could cause similar damage if you used powdered lead or chromium.

A “dirty bomb” is primarily effective because of the fear it instills in a population. People hear “Uranium” and they immediately think radiation.

Many of the medical radiogens are a lot more dangerous IF they are still undecayed and aren’t cleaned up. But they have such short half lives (days or weeks) that they would be ineffective unless obtained from an active reactor source just before an attack. In addition the people handling the material are more likely to die than those attacked unless the weapon packs an explosive wallop. And that would be what killed them.

Still “terrorism” is all about the psychology, not the actual actuarial statistics.

Real radiation sources (DU is *NOT* a particularly active source — I subscribe to the view that its dangers are primarily toxicological not radiological) are wickedly hard to get, and rightly so. From what I’ve read, his plot deserves to be described as more aspirational than operational; he lacked the “dirty” part of the dirty bomb and I have not seen evidence that he had a workable plan to rectify that lack.

Personally, I would like to see all of these half-baked plots, no matter who is hatching them, drop off the news radar. The publicity and political grandstanding surrounding them are making life really hard for the amateur scientist community.

Uranium is relatively easy to vaporize because, in powder form, it’s said to be pyrophoric by some sources (others just say highly flammable, and I don’t care to find out one way or the other myself). However, powdering it on a garage type of scale is not for the faint of heart or brain. It’s quite a soft metal, so cutting it up and throwing it in a ball mill is likely to result merely in coating the inside of the mill in a nice thin layer of uranium metal, not in uranium powder.

I find it interesting that everyone’s freaking out about his supply of uranium when by far the most dangerous thing found in his house was the beryllium. Powdered beryllium really is dangerous — see Wikipedia’s article on berylliosis. Nasty, nasty stuff.

So, in your proposed situation, how would the following issues be handled:

– How would the action level be set? Lots of innocous things (like, say, old watches, certain old plates, and granite sculptures) are naturally slightly radioactive, and that’s on top of significant background radiation.

– What kind of radiation would be used to trip the alarms? Not all radiation measuring instrements effectively measure all types of radiation equally well, or indeed at all. Radiation is one of those issues that while simple in the popular mind is really pretty complex once you break the surface.
