As Jane once wrote, nothing like a Republican catfight.
…certain individuals continue to perpetuate negative stereotypes about Republicans. Especially Republican women. Who do I feel is the biggest culprit? Ann Coulter. I straight up don’t understand this woman or her popularity. I find her offensive, radical, insulting, and confusing all at the same time.
If she doesn’t understand Coulter’s popularity, Megan clearly hasn’t been paying much attention to the Republican Party.
But no matter how much you or I disagree with her, the cult that follows Coulter cannot be denied. She is a New York Times best-selling author and one of the most notable female members of the Republican Party. She was one of the headliners at the recent CPAC conference (but when your competition is a teenager who has a dream about the Republican Party and Stephen Baldwin, it’s not really saying that much).
I have to admit. That’s some pretty good snark.
She goes on to lament just how wingnutty the GOP has become (no, she hasn’t been paying attention), and there’s some cringe-inducing lines in there about how wrong it is to call Obama a "Muslim" (oy).
Then she calls out W.
Where has our extreme thinking gotten us? President Bush will go down as one the least popular presidents in history.
Maybe Megan should ask her Dad why he so slavishly supported, lovingly praised and helped re-elect such an unpopular extremist.

Heh, how long before McMegan apologizes?
Is slapping Coulter less dangerous than slapping Limpy Limbaugh?
oh Blue Texan, what a lovely little bouquet for us this Monday -
firedogs – read the comments in the “Republican Catfight” link . . . so many goopers yearning to breathe free – bwaaahaaahaaa
If the GOP doesn’t realize that young people like Megan McCain are its hope for a future party, it will soon be as extinct as the Whigs. Glad she spoke out; hope she too isn’t forced to apologize like Michael Steele and every other Republican who criticizes one of the sacred conservative haters. Once the GOP and Dems could disagree without rancor, realizing that collegial debate was not only possible, but essential to a democracy. Now the conservative haters don’t even want that dialogue. They must not want a democracy; Rush himself said he wanted the GOP to “clean their clock.” As Jon Stewart said, “That’s occupation,” NOT democracy.
Ask Dad!? Whoa, hold on there, if she’s thinking of jumping to the other side she should talk to this guy first, see what Daddy did to him when questioned so rudely… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pQii1L8fGk
dunno-
both have an evil ‘reach-around’. coulter has longer arms and nails. but rush has minions, like jabba de hut.
bbl.
The girl is sane? Except where her Dad is concerned which seems pretty normal to me. At this rate she should go Dem pretty soon especially if Ann or Rush respond to her comments with their usual hate filled vile rants.
I wonder if John McCain will bail on protecting another kid from the GOP and tell Ann that he is sorry for what his daughter said.
After all John hugged Bush after what the Bush campaign said about John’s adopted daughter really being John’s kid.
Whatever happened to that Twitter Facebook idea thingy Ken Blackwell and the other GOopers had? Shouldn’t they be reaching out to disaffected types like McMegan with new tecnnology?
Will St. McCain back up his daughter? Since he sold his soul to the Bush family, I tend to believe that he will join Rush and Coulter in trashing Megan.
Ms McCain is not going to apologize. and I expect Ann to go after her hammer and tongs – a la The Jersey Girls – prolly some bitchy catty remarks about the child’s weight. And then a sitting US Senator will be the least of Ann’s problems when Cindy unleashes her mama lion
707!
Its good to hear, but the rethugs are the ones that the MSM is promoting. Always no nothing shouters show up on the talking head programs along with pundits who have been proven wrong.
HOWEVER, as has been proven over the years, the big lie works. As long as irresponsible “journalists” continue to “report” “facts” that they should know are out and out lies, the sheeple will follow the lies. Currently, it is the rethuglician party who have mastered and improved what Gobbels came up with back in the 1930s. They will, with the willing participation of the MSM, continue to insure that america remains the most ignorant polity in the “free” world.
I doubt it, especially since Coulter said she’d vote for Hillary over McSame.
Tomorrow this will be a democratic party instigated fight so that attention can be drawn away from serious issues.
I think Megan not Joe the Plumber, Rick Santelli, Rush, Newt, Ann is the latest GOP media creation with the most chance at winning a majority of votes someday.
However all the rest of the GOP even the new plants like Joe and Rick will try and stop her.
She needs to cross over from the Dark Side.
Love these catfights.
Well, she is a McCain, so it runs in the family.

The real Ann Coulter.
Maybe it’s not the Republican Party…it’s just the people that belong to it.
Heh! How long before young Miss McCain does a “Michael Steele?” Knees to the floor, palms to the floor, forehead to the floor a few times, followed by Chinese Communist-style “self-criticism?”
C’mon Ann! Prove to us you’re as potent as the Republican Party’s other obergruppenfuhrer!
I think people are writing the GOP obituary waaaaay prematurely. they’ll be back. Unfortunately. But that’s the way politics is.
Yes just like the controversy over Rush Limbaugh being the new head of the GOP. We did not crown him I think he crowned himself or the MSM did. Making Steele say sorry though confirmed it.
And yes is Rush is your leader the Left will have problems with you that should be a given.
don’t know taht she will. she’s really not beholden to anybody in the GOP. Except Daddy.
Agreed
while meghan mccain disagrees with coulter’s tone, i’m not sure to what extent she disagrees with coulter’s message. after all, meghan mccain is all for war and belligerence when it comes to foreign policy. i’d think she could handle a little local belligerence, especially since coulter isn’t shooting people (yet).
i don’t think so. i recall her writing elsewhere that she voted kerry.
two has beens whose 15 minutes are up. next.
I think she should go out on a limb and trash Rush (since any legitimate criticism of Coultergeist could easily be applied to the Party Chairman), and then sit back and watch the fireworks. Perhaps even daddy would be required by the party apparatchiks to throw her under the bus.
Republicans and related ditto heads cannot exist without Rushann Coulterbaughs.
“Maybe Megan should ask her Dad why he so slavishly supported, lovingly praised and helped re-elect such an unpopular extremist.”
why not cut her some slack, since she supported kerry in 2004, is pro-gay right and pro-stem cell research. maybe WE should be asking “what does it take to flip this young woman to our column?”
The fact that someone raiseed in John McCain’s family came out swinging against ann coulter is a mark in her favor.
“She goes on to lament just how wingnutty the GOP has become (no, she hasn’t been paying attention), and there’s some cringe-inducing lines in there about how wrong it is to call Obama a “Muslim” (oy).”
again, i’m cutting her slack. when i met my g/f 3 years ago, she was 25, just like MM is now. and believe me some of the stuff that came out of my then-not-too-politically-aware g/f’s mouth was stunning, and not in the good way. Not everyone can be as perceptive as Jonathan Krohn.
@whatarehteysmoking: “i’m not sure to what extent she disagrees with coulter’s message. meghan mccain is all for war and belligerence when it comes to foreign policy”
So are a lot of democrats, including Barack Obama, who does not oppose all wars.
cut her a little slack, she’s doing our job for us.
Or Annush Loulter. She runs AIPAC.
Interesting that Megan McCain and Bristol Palin have both felt the need to distance themselves (slightly) from the POV held by their parents. There seems to be a precedent in Republican families, one of the Nixon daughters, two of the Reagan kids. Can’t think of a similar example on the Dem side, although there have probably been some.
She spent 2 years to get her Dad elected President, which is understandable, but to now all of a sudden say, “OMG! Look how extremist Bush was!” — while her Dad embraced him and his policies — is a tad much. Also, she was at those rallies where they were screaming “Traitor!” so the pearl-clutching over Coulter is somewhat irritating as well.
I give her props for it.
Good point Megan has a lot to answer for.
Live visit from Jameel Jaffer of the ACLU over at Christy’s
do we really need on our side patrician socialite rethugs who would gladly stay rethug if it wasn’t for the fact that they’ve allowed their party to be hijacked by cross-burning yahoos in rusty pickup trucks and “heritage not hatred” bumperstickers (possibly with the “not hatred” etched out)? Should we extend the invite to the shrub twins? Maccaca Allen’s l’il ones? ;-P
I missed the bit about Bristol’s conversion. She’s allowed to have opinions? to use her vocal chords?
Also, she was at those rallies where they were screaming “Traitor!” so the pearl-clutching over Coulter is somewhat irritating as well.
yes, i know, and it is verrrrrrry serious: Meghan McCain was responsible for all those people screaming “traitor”, she booked the rallies, she told Sarah Palin what to say, and she wrote her dad’s speeches, right? So you’ll be blasting Chelsea Clinton any minute now because her mom said Obama couldn’t win among white, working class people in pennsylvania, right? Right? I’ll look forward to that one.
Gimme a break. Like the Obama’s kids, like Bush’s kids, like Clinton’s kid, MM was a campaign prop to boost her dad’s humanity (just like every other kid that appears with their politician parent).
some people just don’t know the meaning of the axiom “don’t look a gift horse in the mouth”.
Megan McCain is a gift?
any time a republican attacks another republican for being a radical nutball it’s a gift.
And it’s especially a gift when the republican in question happens to be the daughter of a GOP presidential candidate.
Both Rush and Coulter piled on the Old Navy Dive Bomber. Too much for the good of the R Party. It was hard for them to reverse direction and support McCain after the sliming they did. There should be no love lost between John McCain and those two defacto party leaders.
If the McCain camp can take down Coulter, it will give them some street cred. John McCain is likely jockeying for the role of R Party King Maker. Obama should have metaphorically kneecapped McCain instead of giving him the arm chair photo op. McCain is still politically viable as a warmonger advocate for the Military Industrial Complex. Lest we forget, the chief criticism levied agin him by Rush/Coulter was the complete bullshit (very helpful to him now) liberal/bipartisan label. Likewise, Obama gave McCain crediblity instead of stepping metaphorically on his throat.
Megan is following Daddy’s orders.
I think this may be more about the escalating discomfort level among the well-bred scions of the patrician/fiscalist camp of the rethug party, with the direction of the party as a whole. These Dan Quayleish heirs cannot be comfortable being in the same big tent with their Joe Wurzelbacher creations. Frankenstein’s monsters have taken over the castle and the good doctor (himself a trust fund baby, if I recall) is hiding under the furniture.
Wow, Meghan has cranked things up a notch here. I’ve read her blog and her Daily Beast posts. Gotta say the girl has got herself noticed. And maybe that was the point of joining her dad’s campaign for a couple of years, writing about Henry K’s shoes, doing fun stuff like jumping on hotel beds and licking the frosting off her birthday cake, and giving tours of the straight talk express to dozens of boy scouts.
Meghan has NEVER said why she switched from being a registered independent to being a republican other than as a father’s day present to dear ol’ pop. She has chastised the GOP for not being toobz savvy. As if posting her playlist makes up for their ideology. Smacking down Coulter is an interesting step. But is there more to it than headline grabbing? Gotta say she certainly knows how to take advantage of her moments in the limelight. Lucky little rich kid that she is. I’d love to see her talk about real issues that affect people, but I think she may be just doing this to get attention for herself.
yes, that too.
Uh, yeah — that’s why I’m posting this.
Do I want Megan to be a spokesperson for the Democratic Party? Not so much.
Absolutely. There’s a lot of jockeying for position going on right now. Chaos abounds. Newt is breaking furniture. Steele was a huge blunder. The idiot (maybe he was just pretending to be an idiot) Booby Jindall sank them further. Cantor sucks for them. Boner is trying to stay sober. Palin’s got the cue from Jesus to bust thru that crack in the door. The Plumber. Desperate times.
.. and with some luck, their trust funds were all invested with Madoff….
ding!
And rememember, McCain will always be a War Hero, and Megan, the daughter of a War Hero.
nail hit head.
[emphasis added by me]
This is another example of Republics wearing blinders. The presidency isn’t a popularity contest. That Dubya Bush will go down in history as having public approval levels that rivaled Nixon is irrelevant.
Bush is going to go down as one of the worst presidents in the history of this nation. Sometimes you’re unpopular because the public doesn’t understand what you’re trying to do (think Truman here). Sometimes you’re unpopular because the public has finally figured out what you’re trying to do (think Nixon here).
Dubya Bush falls in the group. And Megan, if you happen to be reading, take it from this member of the Democratic Party: that’s what’s important, not his unpopularity.
Megan should watch her dad beat up MIA activist Dolores Alfond.

Do I want Megan to be a spokesperson for the Democratic Party? Not so much.
nor did i suggest such a thing (although it’d be great optics to watch mccain’s kid publicly renounce the republicans because of rush, coulter, etc.)
My gripe was that MM’s taking some potshots at people we dislike and that she’s young enough not to know better vis her dad’s support for Bush. If she’s 25 now, that makes her about 17 in 2000 and 20 or 21 in 2004, which falls very much into the “not paying attention” years.
shit, I used to party with Phil Gramm’s son jeff back in those days, and that guy barely knew what day it was, never mind what his dad was up to (although the guns and guitars story still cracks me up).
what it boils down to is that I felt the last line of your post was unnecessarily harsh. From what i’ve read of her dad (one article among 337,000 google results), if she was to ask him why he “slavishly supported, lovingly praised and helped re-elect such an unpopular extremist”, he’d probably go ballistic on her. If she feels compelled to lob attacks at Man Coultergeist, don’t broadside the young lady, EGG HER ON!!
I only think that Limbaugh and Coulter changed their position on McCain for two reasons
1) they are opportunists, above all – once they saw that everything they did to sabotage the McCain candiacy wasn’t going to change things – they shifted, without apologizing- to accepting the Republican nominee. There was no way in the world that they’d really support Clinton against McCain. That was pure posturing. They actually wanted Hillary to be the Democratic nominee so they could constantly attack her.
2) McCain kowtowed to them by selecting Palin as his running mate. It demonstrated that he was more than capable of being manipulated by the right wing media and swing to the extreme when he could have veered to the middle and perhaps won.
“Ms McCain is not going to apologize. and I expect Ann to go after her hammer and tongs – a la The Jersey Girls – prolly some bitchy catty remarks about the child’s weight.”
I hope so! I don’t think that very many Republican women are in the skeletor end of the BMI scale.
I’m afraid it is a popularity contest for MM. If you want something bad enough and you marry a woman rich enough to hire someone to make you popular enough, you should be able to attain your life’s dream. Right?
brendanscalling, the GOPers are doing fine fighting among themselves. Wurzelbacher (Joe the Plumber) is going after Steele. Ha! Ha! I’d laugh all the way to the bank, except, well, the banks are trying to figure out what to do about trillions of dollars in worthless derivatives and I’m not in a laughing mood.
MM, Michael Steele, Joe the Plumber- all diversions. What the GOP doesn’t want is for people to draw a straight line from their policies to the economic morass we are in. I hear people calling Obama a socialist. We ought to be sure the pitchforks are aimed right at the real source of the problems, the deregulation of the banks.
Well, in that case, Megan’s properly placed in the Republic Party, just another member of the mindless collection of dittoheads.
Methinks that Megan McCain may have gotten most of the brains in the family. This is the second time I’ve read where she has stepped on Republican toes. If only the “Maverick” would have the same sense that Ms. McCain does.
