Oh, oh, ohhhh! The Senate Republicans, along with drama-queening Democrats Bill Nelson and Bob Menendez (who are apparently looking to grab some time in the spotlight), are holding up the budget bill for fiscal year 2009 — a bill that funds the government through September 30 of calendar year 2009. Much chest-thumping and manliness is on display — ooooh, we’re gonna show that Obama, aren’t we? — but a closer reading shows that this is all hissy kabuki on the GOP’s part:
Although Republicans were glad to needle the Democrats by delaying the bill, there are reasons not to scuttle it. Doing so would result in a $8.4 million budget cut for Senate Republican committees, forcing staff layoffs.
Also, Republicans, like Democrats, would lose the home-state projects, or earmarks, totaling more than $7 billion in the bill.
Which is of course why the Republicans allowed a stopgap spending bill to go through to keep the government going for another five days so they can do some more hissy kabuki before they actually sign the thing. The last time they tried to actually shut down the government, it came back to bite them in the ass in the 1996 elections.
So what’s on your mind today?

About Firedoglake
Morning, PW. I think the Rs are going to do this dance on every single bill that comes up. Their one aim in life is to see that things are as difficult for the Ds as possible. Tiny little minds.
A-yep. At least until Al Franken is sworn in. (And if Jim Bunning finally gets sick of being shoved to the side by Miss McConnell, he could always carry out his threat to resign and allow KY’s Democratic governor to appoint a Democratic replacement.)
Tiny little minds and one big fat idiot.
Yep, that sums up the republican party of today.
I am having a hard time have ‘christian’ feelings for the republican party.I don’t know many republicans any more, either they have left their party, or have become so right wing that i can not bear to listen to them talk
(Remember my former friend that said we should kill all the Arabs before they kill us?).
I don’t know what the answers are. I had hoped that my anger at the republican party would have abated after Pres. Obama’s election, but it hasn’t. I don’t like this anger feeling, I can’t imagine what the insides of Hannity and limbaugh are like.
So, this Lent season I am working on my anger and dislike of right wing republicans. I would do so much better if Rush would take a long vacation to the DR with a couple of bottles of Viagra.
Speaking of crazies, Fred Phelp’s family came to my city yesterday. I did not go, that kind of slimyness is beyond me right now. This is a 2nd appearance of the Phelps nuts. It must mean that our city is doing something right against hate.
Ah well Spring is coming. I can see some changes even though the ground is covered with snow. The birds are more energetic and there are more of them that need to be fed often.
Have a nice weekend everyone!!!
Either that or Spector desides that if he is going to have a future in the senate it would be as a dem. The rethug base has already announced a candidate to primary him that can probably beat him.
We have enough lightening storms around here today, so after a brief shake of the finger at the bad kids in D.C., I decided to enjoy my day thinking of Sasha and Malia having fun with their new swing set.
What wonderful, thoughtful parents these sweet little girls have, even if their gorgeous mom chooses to
horrifytickle the pugnicans little egos by going sleeveless some times, and others wearing a knockout pantsuit. Here’s to the Obama family having a wonderful weekend.
What I like most is the idea that the girls will be playing within view of the Oval Office. Daddy can help watch them while he works.
eek! there’s an edit function, just right there on the page. askeered to touch it yet, but THANK YOU dear Techies!!!
That occurred to me as soon as its arrival was announced. Life doesn’t get much sweeter than that. ;->

Now, if someone could just find a cute little “rescue” Portuguese water dog/puppy. Honestly, parents-Obama, it doesn’t just HAVE to be a rescue. How about just getting the pup from a reliable breeder, and then sponsoring some rescues. Wouldn’t that be o.k.? I’m on the kids’ side on this one. Do you have any idea how hard it is to be so good during a whole long long campaign and then have to wait for that puppy? I know, I know. Wouldn’t wanna spoil them. sigh. I think the country has experienced “spoiled” recently enough that we know the difference. Follow your inner guides, dear parents. They appear not to have failed you up to this point.
yum,serve one up mam

household DRUDGERY awaits…no not eggman……….g
wow. no kidding. bless their hearts. the trubble they’ve seen. *snerk*
Helping out pet rescue places now would be a good thing. Also, I’d like to see spring up all across the country methods for people to donate/sponsor pet food so that people could keep their pets instead of having to surrender [or worse, abandon] them.
Food banks for pets. Because that’s no frivolous matter. Katrina should have taught us that.
The Sunshine family can attest to how invaluable in the role of friends/therapy/comforters our pets become.
We could call it the Mickey Rourke plan.
My daughter works for the SPCA and told me the other day that they had 230 dogs in their place. Isn’t that awful ! Many of them, of course, never make it out because they are mean and dangerous.
play trivia to give free kibble to shelters and rescues
note, there’s one for doggies as well
Is Hello Kitty diminished
or are the Republicans enhanced
by the association?
I ponder the question
Such is the power of Hello Kitty.
PW. Could you be a sweetie and repeat that link to the Gail Collins column? I can’t even find what diary you’re talking about. *pounding forehead*
I love her stuff. She’d fit in here really well, wouldn’t she?! Mornin’, Prairie.
Meow!
Here’s the link to Prairie’s diary
Hey! Mornin’ to you, too.
I’ve read times are getting so hard, many people are abandoning, neglecting, or turning in their animals to shelters, not bothering to license them, etc. They simply can’t afford them. So the shelters are bursting at the seams. So sad….
I heard David Brooks yesterday playing concern troll, insisting Obama is in danger of spreading himself too thin, and neglecting the “important” problems by trying to cover too much territory at once. I was afraid for the telly’s safety, so did not listen to his take on just which problem was worthy of attention.
Not all idiots are stupid, but they insult real, true blindness. What keeps these haughty naughties floating so high above the rest of the world that they DARE even hint at such nonsense in public?! Methinks those French air-head-stocracy cake crumbs are getting pretty stale.
I invite David Brooks and brethren to go back to school, serving in soup kitchens and homeless shelters by day, then slopping out dog runs and cat boxes in the animal shelters by night. I’d give him 2 hrs. at such a job before he broke and ran. Come to think of it, he already has, without learning a thing. Amazing, bone-headed, graceless, whooo brie can do that to some of the weaker links in society.
Concern-Troll is an old niche, long-ago shunned in our society. Shame! David! Yes, YOU! David Brooks! Open thine eyes and look upon thine own “branding”. It is not a pretty sight.
Thanks PW. digg is open.
Thanks much! ;->
Great. just fucking great. I can’t get away from these guys. I’m from NJ. Bob Menendez. Scumbag who votes the right way. So he can stay. Well, usually votes the right way. He’s a Toricelli who speaks Spanish. Look asshole, when you were a Congressman and represented a district that was 98% Cuban, it was fine to vote like this. You’re a Senator now, dickweed. You represent the whole state. Get how that works? And ya know something? Outside your old district? People in NJ? What they think about US policy towards Cuba? Know what? “Who gives a shit?” That’s what they think.
So I move to the Sunshine State (still waiting for my special edition “Don’t Tase Me Bro’” license plate. Or tags as they call them here. Hey Florida! Dogs have tags. Cars have plates. And could we use some of that stimulus moolah to get some plates for the front of the car?). So i have Bill “Lost in Space” Nelson, an alleged Democrat, for a Senator. I mentioned this yesterday but for those of you who don’t know…… You know what the results of one test they did on Nelson in space showed? For the first time we learned of such thing as “negative charisma”. Not no charisma. Nelson has a charisma deficit. He had an easy job on the space shuttle. Didn’t do anything. Because nobody even noticed he was there!
And Mel Martinez……. well, he wasn’t quite as bad a chairman of the RNC as Michael Steele. But he’s a R so I expect him to be an asshole and he rarely disappoints.
Jeez. I just can’t get away from these guys. Menendez! Nelson! Next time we want your opinion, we’ll tell you what it is.
Bunnings gonna bean McConnell with fastball if McConnell doesn’t watch out.
Or he could just switch sides if he didn’t want to resign. I wonder whether Reid has had a chat with him.
Ohhhh. Thanks again, Ellie (28) and especially PW for the treat.
I hadn’t read any Gail Collins before(see link at Ellie’s 28). Now she’ll enter my list of “must-reads”. One delicious zinger after another. Just what the doc ordered. heh.
A message so meaningless and trite and false on its face suggests either the speaker or his audience is severely limited. Think of the Repugnants and their sitdown strike to prevent adjournment until their little Drill Baby ditty was honored, then taking credit for a temporary drop in fuel prices. Think of, in fact, any suggestion they have made in the past decade and longer. Now they’ve fixed on the Spending Freeze mantra, although not a single one of them can explain economically why Hoover’s old Depression enabler should work this time.
But let’s not forget there is a Democrat or two ready to ride that simpleton saga. Hillary was more than willing to match the old reboot in playing to the downhome galleries with her gas tax gambit and insults of “elitism” and race baiting. The Repugs are not a serious entity, but remember there are other opportunists with less scruple than ambition on our side of the aisle as well.
Not so sure I want Senator “if I only had a brain” Bunning in out party. Would drop the IQ of the entire group.
you’re welcome Adie, and that’s PS’s post ;)
.
Peterr’s up on the bull market in bank failures
Tempting as it may seem, we do NOT want Bunning as Democrat. He’s the broken clock that gets to be correct twice a day. He’d immediately go to the top of the “Most Reactionary Dem in the last 40 years” list. That is, he’d make Pryor, Lincoln, Bayh, both Nelsons, Landreiu and Short Ride all seem to be the epitome of progressives.
Oops! That yer comment just conjured up an ancient memory of comedian Tim Conway’s old-coot character. Heh.
That was funny enuf, but i wouldn’t want to upset anyone with inappropriate
link even tho i are an old biddy, so try this better one he had on elephants. Guaranteed to brighten yer day, unless yer a repug.
OH! T’would be best if ya set down beverage before playing the clip, ahem.

Thing’s are getting tough. Last year my sister bred her English Sheepdog. There was a long list of potential buyers. This year the breeder told them not to bother. No one is buying.
gonna look at it right now. ws just thinking of tim conway the other day. and a skit he did on Carol Burnett where he was a lighthouse keeper and didn’t talk but just made noises like boats.
LOL!. funny stuff. he usually was good at keeping a straight face while everyone around him cracked up. but even he lost it there. vicky lawrence did a good pretty good job of keeping it together.
Thanks for the TPM link re: Nelson (of Florida). I dashed off the following e-mail to him (thinking to myself–we NEED more GOOD Dems):
Please don’t patronize me and other of your constituents by seeking to explain the issue as ‘complicated.’ Pursuing failed policies with non-product sticktuitiveness is one of the reasons our economic well-being now teeters on the brink of disaster. I offer the following link from TPM and suggest you carefully consider just who your constituents are: http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsme…..ellent.php
“This is the same sort of circular firing squad nonsense that Democrats did throughout the Bush Administration. We have no time for parliamentary games – especially from our side of the table.”
That was wonderful. Haven’t laughed like that in a long time. Always loved that show. thanks
Great comment! I know I’m epu-ed, had to duck away for a while. Thanks for putting my link in the thread, Elliot.
For late readers here, Fargo also has donation bins at pet stores, at least 3 pet rescue organizations. But I want to see a concerted effort to keep pets in their homes, with their owners, hence the thought of some sort of pet food bank/ or shelf at the human food banks, maybe.
Kind of like prevent treatment rather than waiting for dire Stage 4 straits of cancer.
VERY much in agreement with you! They aren’t “mere pets”. They are members of families who need their company desperately and vv in today’s hard times.
Remember the articles about people abandoning their horses because they couldn’t afford to stable and feed them. Horses are more expensive than our house pets…but I saw that as a harbinger of what was coming.
i can’t do that here. we’re all filled up. there’s no room at the inn of our house.
lol
i’d get 3 more if i could.
somehow, i don’t think the Obama parents KNOW that whatever you get, once you get it, you fall deeply in love with it, so it really doesn’t matter where your pet comes from.
they’re overthinking something that’s beautifully simple.
just DO IT!
