Yesterday, Newsweek published an abjectly ridiculous article, quoting "anonymous sources" inside the White House and claiming that Nancy Pelosi fast tracked the stimulus bill over President Obama’s objections. . . resulting in the tragic loss of the Charlie Dent vote:
Dent says he wanted to talk about some of his concerns, but Democratic leaders ignored him. Pelosi didn’t share the president’s dream of brotherly love breaking out in the Capitol. She was in charge, this was her bill and she would decide what was in it. To the ire of Republicans, and some Democrats, Pelosi maneuvered to put the stimulus package on an emergency fast track, cutting short debate on the bill and cutting Republicans out of the discussion. "I believe the president was absolutely sincere in looking for a bipartisan outcome," Dent says. "But the White House lost control of the process when the bill was outsourced to Pelosi."
So, even though Obama asked for the stimulus bill to be on his desk by President’s Day, he was somehow miffed because Pelosi fast tracked it? And the GOP leadership did not threaten to crush Bucky Dent’s head like a grape if he voted for the bill, unlike say Joseph Cao, who is facing potential recall because he did so? Obama just hands Dent a hot dog, and he’d be willing to commit political suicide within the Republican party and destroy Eric Cantor’s "united front" but he doesn’t because Nancy Pelosi was mean to him? Seriously?
I asked Speaker Pelosi about the assertion that the administration objected to her use of fast track this morning at an on-the-record meeting with new media representatives. "It couldn’t be further from the truth," she said. Pelosi indicated that she could have moved it through much faster, but didn’t. "We did it in one week and one day," she said. "We didn’t start on inauguration day." She indicated that there had been committee hearings where Republicans had input, and it was silly to think that their objections would have been overcome by a longer process which would have resulted in delays that the White House expressly did not want.
The Speaker also responded to the anonymous "administration official" who said Pelosi made it clear she wanted to be informed any time the White House spoke to a House member. "I never said you can only talk to members before you talk to me — I don’t have that kind of time," she said. Pelosi encouraged them to be in free communication with members of the House and the Caucus. "They have a lot of ideas you should talk to them on," she indicated.
Pelosi also denied that she had an "enemies list," as the Politico indicated yesterday. I asked her how she would respond to the assertion in the Newsweek article by a Senior Obama Official who said that "dealing with Democrats has been tougher than dealing with Republicans." She said that we would continue to see a lot of these kinds of articles, and that it was serving someone’s interest to float these stories.
I wonder who she could possibly be talking about?

I guess some folks just don’t play well with others.
Thanks Jane! Maybe Nancy has a blackberry?
going back… that evan guy is a bum. good job w/that. Do they think you’re stupid? I mean, they wasted so much of your time you couldn’t get anything up about how things are looking kinda crummy for EFCA. sez HuffingtonPost yesterday.
is that the Bucky Dent? BTW, reggie jackson really hit the game winner.
THE bucky Dent, i meant.
how couild Newsweek make such a serious claim based on Bucky Dent’s whining that he was “frozen out.” there was no freeze out. never seen a prsident reach iout so much. BTW, it’s harder to work with Democrats because Republicans won’t work with you. There’s no woprk to be done.
who’s bucky dent?
You have a point.
LA Rep Cao not Gao I think. (quibbling)
Well, if he is the The Bucky Dent then he used to play for the Yankees. His is most famous as being the scrap hitter who hardly ever hit homeruns in the regular season, but managed to hit one vital one in, I believe it was 1978, in a playoff game against the Boston Redsox.
Had a short discussion yesterday with my Broder-type colleague, who styles himself a Conwservative Democrat (in opposition, I believe, to his mama, who was a raging Greenwich CT old school liberfal). Anyway, he positively hates Pelosi and all the libruls like us. Says we are oging to destroy the Democratic party by chasing away the moderates. He’s hopeless, but it goes to show that there are still quite a few of these blue dogs around, and not all of them in crackerland.
but who is this reference to? not that guy is it?
is it Charlie Dent ?
Why is Obama doing this to his own party? This continued backstabbing of Pelosi can’t be of help to building party solidarity to enact his desired laws. What does rahm have to gain out of destroying the Democratic majority unless he intends to convert the party to be the same as the rethugs. This will guarantee that Obama will fail and the rethugs can come back in 2012. Is rahm more comfortable in a minority party?
The ‘Dent’ of this article and post is Congressman Charlie Dent. As I learned from reading the article that Jane linked to.
Rep. Charlie Dent (R-Pa.), a centrist, said, “Obama has done an excellent job setting a proper bipartisan tone by reaching out to Republicans.”
tried to do that. my link didn’t work.
I don’t care that much for Rahm Emanuel either, but Jane, sometimes you talk like he’s the source of all evil. Yes, he’s a corporate Democrat, but he’s not an idiot; it’s his job to get Obama’s programs through Congress. I don’t think he’s the one who’s undermining Pelosi. It would be against his interest to do so at this stage.
My guess is that the sources of this anti-Pelosi stuff are the money guys, the Wall Streeters and Rubinites that Obama hired. They have the biggest incentive to stop Pelosi from moving things in a more progressive direction.
I had to laugh when I saw that Newsweek article and saw Dent claiming that he really really really wanted to vote for the bill but that Mean Ol’ Nancy Pelosi just wouldn’t let him.
And good for Madame Speaker in standing up and answering your questions ON THE RECORD! Enough of the “anonymous sources” hatchet jobs from the White House. It was not right in Bush years and it’s not right for Obama people either.
Yeah, Rahm, you can try to hide but your BS is too well known. Your fingerprints and MO are on file if you will.
Now for the record which “Senior White House Official” has the most (he thinks) to gain by under cutting the Speaker of the House and trying to make her look bad? And if you notice, the “anonymous sources” quoted in the Newsweek article are all variants on the “Senior White House Official” or “Senior Administration Official”
Who? Why none other than the brand new Authoritarian,New American Century, rethuglician party of Rush Limbaugh! The potty that wants the Obama govt to fail. They don’t seem to think beyond the “Obama govt fail” headline do they? If they did they might, maybe, possibly, understand that if Obama fails, then we will be in another great depression, which then means that if Obama were to fail and the rush rethugs win, then it would all be on them-and their only idea(TAX CUTS)-and when that failed and the people bring out the torchs and pitchforks. Then the country turns to corporate fascism and a theocratic dictatorship. Which is the endgame for all the rethug evangelicals-along with their belief in the “end of days”-whose current date is(dramatic pause) Dec 21, 2012. About 5 weeks after the next prez election. And when the world wakes up on Dec 22 2012 without the end of the world, then what will the rethugs do?
Hey, dakine! I’m willing to give Rahm the benefit, etc, especially since i am now reading “Family of Secrets” Russ Baker (Marcy is hosting salon Mar 14). As Joe Buck says, monied interests have no compunction in driving wedges.
It didn’t work the first time I tried it either. It went to a google link. Then I tried again and it worked.
Jane, I think you need to go easy on the sports analogies here. . .
But the articles Jane is linking to are not quoting “monied interests outside the White House”.
They are quoting “Senior White House Officials” and “Senior Administration Officials”.
And I have no hesitation in believing that Rahm would be carrying the water and attempting to drive the wedges for the monied interests. Think back to his recruitment of folks like Heath Shuler to run for Congress or the other folks he had switch from R to D to run (the guy who first replaced Mark Foley fer instance and the woman who ran for Kathryn Harris’ old seat). Or how he pushed folks to not talk against the Iraq Occupation or about Immigration reform.
Rahm may be Obama’s CoS but he is NOT on our side.
Geez, Rahm, just because Nancy doesn’t publicly thumb her nose at people doesn’t mean she’s not tough enough to make you look like an idiot.
C’mon, Rahmbo. Just because it’s ridiculously easy for you to play Steele and Rush off each other doesn’t mean you can roll Pelosi. She was in electoral politics when you were in diapers, kiddo.
This would make more sense the other way around. Or change before to after.
Does the White House want to sell chaos as its way of doing business?
Half the time the story is that the WH just wants to do the outline in broad brush strokes and leave the details to Congress. The other half, it’s that Congress in the person of Nancy Pelosi isn’t doing what they want.
Shouldn’t the WH be reacting more to Republicans not doing what they want?
We all remember how on message the Obama campaign was. This is no longer true. Perhaps it is because the Administration has imported so many loud-mouths from the Clinton era. But the result is that they are stepping all over their message.
Bucky Dent (born November 25, 1951), born Russell Earl O’Dey, Dent is widely remembered for hitting a three-run homer that gave the Yankees a 3-2 lead in the 1978 AL East division playoff game against the Boston Red Sox. It was notable because he was not known as a power hitter, having hit just 40 home runs in 12 years in the major leagues, and occupying the 9th spot in the batting order. The Yankees went on to win the game 5-4, securing the division title in the process.
After the devastating loss, Red Sox fans began referring to him as Bucky “Fucking” Dent. To this day he is still called that by most Boston fans. When he attended a recent game at Fenway Park he was introduced to the crowd as Bucky “Bleeping” Dent. He acknowledged this introduction with a smile and a wave to the crowd.
maybe he was the offspring of Anita O ‘Dey
Which is why it will be so rewarding to see him head back to Illinois with his tail between his legs — and no open congressional seat waiting.
I give him, oh, about a year. Tops.
Joe, love ya, that just isn’t how it works. It’s not a situation where anyone is guessing. While there’s plenty of reason not to trust the “money guys,” they don’t control messaging coming out of the White House and they’re not the ones leaking to the press. Nor are they wrestling with Pelosi to get legislation passed — they have nothing to do with what the article is talking about.
If you look back at the “no drama” Obama campaign, they never leaked. The minute Rahm shows up, it’s drama and leaks all over the place, and it never stopped. It isn’t just a couple of people saying this. Many of the tips I get come because people want to push information out, but they’re afraid of getting on Rahm’s bad side, and they trust we won’t rat them out.
Geithner and Summers may be powerful people, but this isn’t their turf.
I’m not sure that Jane used ‘Bucky’ on purpose because I don’t see anywhere in her post that she equated what’s happening to the Bucky Dent of baseball. I think she meant to say Charlie but she goofed. Maybe she’ll correct me or not.
Me think’s it be snark
yeah. i just googled the guy and found out who he was. he’s full of crap.
i mean, obama met with him, invited him to his Super Bowl party and what??? he blames Pelosi for alack of bipartisanship? eirther there was bipartisanship (or at least the effort) or tere wasn’t. there was. and what does he mean ‘outsourcing’ to pelosi the job of getting the bill passed? getting bills passed is the speaker’s job. full o’ crap, he is.
i think she was goofing on charlie. whatever.
“Fast track” isn’t a sports analogy, it’s a procedural move.
http://www.citizen.org/trade/fasttrack/
Maybe so, but if so, I don’t get it. No matter.
i meant the bucky dent refernence
Thanks Jane.
digg is open.
Don’t think he hit a home run this time. *g*
and he was very, very involved in the stimulus negotiations. who else could it have been? this sis kinda my point tho’. on another subject (social security reform?) jane was saying how important te process is. with the stimulus, i was so sick of hearing about process. you can’t blame pelosi about having a closed process when Rahm was there. Biden was involved too (and got trashed by Broder for not knowing how to deal with the HOuse). there was a process for these guys to participate in. nopt one to my liking. unfortuinately it was kinda snatched away from pelosi but that wasn’t her fault
maybe it sounds ass backwards, b ut that bill was too big not to fast track. sure, more time neded to read it and all that crap. butthat would have been like leaving an animal for buzzards. too much to pick at. more time and it would have been a carcas.
I still do not understand why the dems have not put up more of a defense on the fast tracking. The rethugs say more time was needed. How much time?
Congress was ready to adjourn. Did the rethugs want a week, two, three at a time when jobs are being shed at a rate of 150K per week.
What do they call Bill Buckner?
Billy Buck. . .I call him one of the best and toughest 1st basemen ever who should not have been in that game under those circumstances. I’m a Cub fan, don’t care about no stinkin American League.
Surprise, surprise! Rahm still wants the Speaker of the House as a fall back position in case Obama can him for his crap.
Pelosi’s feeling her oats and Rahm wants to play smack down. Let her know he’s still the man. What a guy!
Boston fans call Bucky Dent Bucky F’ing Dent not just because he hit that all important three run home run, but because he did it as a Yankee.
As for Buckner, he went to Fenway for the first time since ‘86 World Series game to throw out the first pitch of the home opener of the 2008 season. He was received with five minute standing ovation by the Boston fans. He said it was never the fans that gave him grief, it was the media. You know how them bastards can be.
If Ms. Pelosi does not have an enemies list, perhaps she should start one? I’m sure they’d not be missed.
