Today’s global rate cuts have reduced the risk of a market crash, but won’t resolve the underlying crisis, says NYU economist Nouriel Roubini of RGE Monitor.

But the financial market crisis has unfolded even quicker than Roubini expected (which is saying something), and the economist now thinks the Dow and S&P will suffer 50% declines from last October’s peak vs. 40% previously.

In other words, the Dow is going to 7,000, but over the course of months vs. days if Roubini is right, as — unfortunately for bulls — he mostly has been for the past two years.

“The policy response is going to become more aggressive [but] a steady flow of bad financial and macro economic news is going to push down equity markets,” he says, forecasting a real bottom won’t be hit until “sometime next year.”

Because of growing slack in the global economy, Roubini says deflation is going to become a much bigger threat in the next six months vs. inflation. In such an environment, cash, Treasuries and gold are the only safe bets he says — provided your holdings are within the FDIC’s new $250,000 insurance cap.

It has been five months and the Dow is now below 7,000. His prophetic accuracy is why they call him, Dr. Doom.

Was brutally cold here as well. Can’t make or tend a fire with one bad arm, so I stayed close to the space heater!

We have these little heaters on wheels that are oil filled. Man, they do crank out the heat. We love them, but will wait until the temps go above 20 or so to open the fireplace damper. Spring, my love, please arrive!

A year ago Roubini was forecasting an 18-month recession with a U-shaped recovery; now, he’s now expecting the downturn to last at least 24 months and possibly 36-months. He also sees rising risks of a Japanese-style L-shaped stagnation, i.e. a prolonged period with little or no economic growth.

The rain doesn’t bother me anymore, I’m not living here and can go back to my sunshine and warm days.

We did go to the big show to see “International” — Clive Owen was great, and it was very thrilling (but also very violent). Love the movies.

So far as I can tell, the world economy is in a death spiral: demand is down, so people are being laid off, so demand decreases yet further. Eventually, it has to turn around, since by definition demand can’t go below zero.

The Obama administration is simply followin’ the accepted custom and practice of followin’ positions taken before the courts on matters by previous administrations and passin’ the buck to the courts to determine the propriety of the interpretation and application of the law. This is the Kabuki dance that passes for “rule of law” in this country and we shouldn’t be hammerin’ Obama because his administration doesn’t want to get whipsawed by a corrupt court system by takin a contrary position to the previous executive in matters of “state security” only to have the courts smack ‘em down makin’ the Obamas look like they are not keepin’ the country safe.

We have NEVER had a “rule of law” in this country, only a set of customs and practices that enforce the laws passed on behalf of those who own the country and make the wars. Obama is NOT stupid and is puttin’ the buck back where it belongs, on the “independent judiciary” to interperet the meaning and application of the law under the Consitution. If the courts give his administration the same powers that have been taken by the fascist Bush administration then we have two options, wait to see if Obama uses these authoritarian, non-democratic powers or hit the streets and bring down the elected anti-fascist government.

ES the safety net “a chicken in every pot” has been dismantled over the last four decades. Food banks have been short of demand since the 1998 recution in food stamps by $30 million. Bring in that pool of folks with no way out has to be disconcerting at the least.

Repspectfully dear but that’s nonsense…Obama is pushin’ the Bush line to the next level and forcin’ the courts to make the determination that what has been advanced as lawful is, in fact unlawful and unconstitutional. Obama is followin’ precedent and practice to not reverse positions of constitutional relevance that have been presented to the court by previous administrations. Think for a moment…what if Obama reverses the Bush position and is nonetheless smacked down by a “conversative court”. Well then, the Constitution is shambles and Obama is food for the jackels. Ok now what if the “conservative court” doesn’t want to give a “liberal administration” authoritarian powers…well, that court upholds the Constitution and Obama will be held to behavior he was gunna follow anyways. Now, what if the court upholds the Bush-fascist power grab, Obama can either follow the behavior of the fascists or he can choose to follow the constitution anyway but he is not in the position of breakin’ the law in so doin’…or he can become worse than Bush( and if ya believe that, well then the whole thing is fucked anyway).
