In the wake of finding out that a detainee has suffered multiple attacks upon his genitals with a scalpel, that incidents of detainee abuse have INCREASED since December, Long Island Congressman Peter King, has found a new scandel (spew alert).Detainees at Guantanamo are treated far better than most American prisoners in the US jails and prisons I’ve inspected over the years.

| By: masaccio Thursday February 26, 2009 3:15 pm |
There has been a lot of loose talk about nationalizing banks. How can that happen? And if it did, what will happen to stakeholders?

For some reason (and I don’t know what my motivation was) I jumped onto the Cato Institutes live-blogging of Our Great and Glorious Socialist Leader’s Edict To The Masses.
Employee Free Choice: Beware of the Big Lie Bill |
| By: Tula Connell Thursday February 26, 2009 1:35 pm |
Opponents of the Employee Free Choice Act in Congress made their Big Lie into a bill Wednesday, when Republicans John DeMint (S.C.) and Mike Enzi (Wyo.) introduced the so-called Secret Ballot Protection Act.
Before we go further, let’s clear up the bill’s false implication right now:
The Employee Free Choice Act would not—repeat after me—would not, take away the secret ballot National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election process if workers seeking to form a union wanted to use it.

| By: Stirling Newberry Thursday February 26, 2009 12:46 pm |
The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) 10 year budget projection, which is a high level view of spending plans, is focused on first providing honesty to the numbers, second on addressing the costs of health care as the single largest fiscal challenge, and third raising revenue primarily on corporations and upper income individuals to pay for lower income tax cuts and moderate investments in new technology. The Annual Wingnut Convention is underway, and for those interested in taking in the hilarity as it unfolds, Clownhall has a live feed.
The comments on the right side of the page are also fascinating to watch — a seemingly endless scroll of racism, nativism and ignorance, all badly misspelled.
Right now, Bay Buchanan is babbling about how conservatives believe in keeping the government “off our backs” (guess she didn’t read Rover this morning) and “states’ rights.” It will always be 1964 for these crazies.

| By: looseheadprop Thursday February 26, 2009 9:45 am |
GW law Professor Jonathan Turley has been saying for a while now that President Obama would have only a short period of time to initiate investigations fo wars crimes before Obama himself became complicit. A lawyer for detainees alleges that torture and abuse has actually INCREASED since Obama was elected. This puts Obama in a box, he has to act or else share in Bush’s war crimes fate.
Qwest CEO Nacchio, Who Refused to Wiretap Illegally, is Off to Jail |
| By: emptywheel Thursday February 26, 2009 9:05 am |
Now, it’s likely that Nacchio will appeal to SCOTUS. Which means the Roberts Court will probably be refusing cert for Nacchio at about the time they overrule Vaughn Walker’s impending decision that retroactive immunity for telecoms–you know, the guys who broke the law when they cooperated with Dick Cheney’s illegal wiretap program?–is illegal.
