This paragraph really sticks out to me, because it involves a false premise that is the foundation of the the entire revisionist construct:
As it happens, Gingrich is also the only guy alive who can actually claim to have led a beleaguered Republican House minority back to power. During the years when Tom DeLay and Karl Rove ruled Washington, conservatives wondered what they had to learn from a has-been who had been forced from power; now they wonder if he might have just a little more magic left under that schoolboy shock of white hair. “If you said to me that I could only consult with one individual, and my job was to bring the party back, Newt Gingrich would be the guy,” says Frank Luntz, the pollster who has worked with Gingrich going back to the 1994 Contract With America, the 10-point agenda that Republicans waved around on their way to the majority. “This guy would be the perfect ‘Behind the Music’ story, because he was on top, and then he lost it all, and now he’s back and bigger than ever. It’s perfect.”
[emphasis added]
OK, lets remember how Newt got to be Speaker of the House shall we? Simple, he took over GOPAC and transformed it. He went around raising money from big corporations, promising them that he could deliver reliable votes on matters that were important to them (kind like an uberlobbyist) and then he went out and recruited candidates who promised to adhere to his commands — he made them sign his "Contract with America"– but were too weak to run unassisted. He gave them messaging, candidate training, staff, and most of all MONEY from GOPAC.
They were elected to Congress, producing that famous GOP majority, but they were utterly dependent on Newt for the re-election that was only 2 years away, and he never hesitated to remind them of that. He owned their asses.
Newt didn’t win a majority in the House because of the strength of his policy ideas or political views; he won because of a dubious fundraising system and a cynical marketing strategy.
The documents are striking for showing how a group whose aim was transforming the Republicans into the majority party focused far more on strategy and marketing than on the substance of ideas. Gopac members did grapple at length with how to define their political philosophy. At one point, Mr. Gingrich conceded that it was only "70 percent" conservative.
If the GOP is turning to Newt again, it is a sign of just how bankrupt of ideas and very desperate they are.

About Firedoglake
i almost thought for a sec there that you were writing about rahm emanuel.
This post is pretty funny to me, personally, bc this happened at my house last night.
My mother, your basic ultra conservative Dem (born in W VA, lived in KY and So. IN) who still has been so disgusted with Bush for so long that she made me take her out and get her registered (she had moved back to KY about 5 years ago and never got around to it) so she could vote for Obama -
anyway, she was walking through the room and a talking head was on talking about Gingrich as the intellectual genius of the Republican party – I had tuned it out, but she caught it and from the noises, I thought I should look up a medical definition of apoplexy and see if I needed to worry.
You never saw three 90+ lb German Shepherds run and hide so fast – it was like watching young Republicans scatter before a recruiting officer approaching them with a pen in hand.
I think I need to check with her doctor before I let her in on Joe the Plumber’s take on how in the olden days, when someone said soemthing you didn’t like, someone would just shoot them and it was ok, cuz everyone understood.
And a character reference from the clearly disinterested and unbiased Frank Luntz! — who’s made millions crafting opinions you should have, on Newt’s behalf.
Newt Gingrich is a slimy creature who should crawl back under his rock.
newt is part and parcel of the corrupt, paid-off governing class. We have to see if OB can help the old-timers in the DEMS escape from that swamp.
Newt is part of the gooper meme that attacks the stimulus plan and the new OB bgt as class warfare, and the new line that we are hurting our children and our grandchildren by saddling them with debt.
Do the goopers think that it is better to have your parents and your grandparents lose their jobs, their house, declare bankruptcy and get sick without access to healthcare?
Do the goopers think that our children and grandchildren are better off with no preventive health care, with fewer teachers, dirtier air, serving in unnecessary wars to preserve access to mideast oil, losing their homes, living in a long-running recession?
yes
He goes by “Newt”. A semi-aquatic lizard.
That should tell you everything about the man.
Newt, another Republican vampire who refuses to die no matter how many times he is discredited. So is the Newter going to usher in another era of “bipartisanship” like the last time he had any power? Or will we have to wait for the return of Tom Delay for that?
Here’s one of Newt’s recent brilliant ideas.
In the first four years after F.D.R. took over from Hoover, the already decimated ranks of Republicans in Congress fell from 36 to 16 in the Senate and from 117 to 88 in the House.
So yeah, a Depression does have a silver lining.
If only it had been the NYTimes that ceased publishing yesterday rather than the Rocky Mountain Times. NYTimes is a rag.
For those who signed Newt’s contract, why are they still in office? The contract contained term limits. There is nothing to stop someone from self-limiting their term. Seems like an ad campaign featuring these signers is in order.
So Newt is the savior of the rethugs? DeLay-still another indited criminal-at cpac said that all rethugs should hope for a total failure of the dems and Obama. Do these people listen to themselves? Are they just running their mouths without engaging their brains first? palin is a leader of the conservatives, she blames “the media” for showing us her incredible lack of anything intelligent-Tina Fey is her total downfall, she turned palin into a national joke, yet palin is still a big fav-if palin or jindal is ever elected, then I would have to revise my thinking about the future. I think it would only be 10-20 years to a theocratic facist dictatorship, or a total facist takeover-since the rethugs under newt already allowed the corps into the house, they are, I believe, the ones to really watch out for. They will do anything to stop Obama and to keep the taxpayer giving them their no bid cost plus contracts. And going by what I have seen lately, palin and jinal would be great patsies and fronts to cover looting the treasury and taking over the country. If this is the only talent that the rethugs have-and they seem to believe that these 2 are the greatest things since sliced bread-then the corporations have indeed taken over the authoritarian movement that is growing ever larger within the rethug party. Corruption rules! rules are only made for idiots to follow! the rethugs are in fact rush robots and dittoheads who have fallen under what Goebbels could only have dreamed of, groupthink. and strict belief in their Authoritarian Leaders who can say 7 impossible and totally contradictory things every day, yet their followers will totally believe the last thing that was said. God help us.
Seems appropriate to spell it “Noot”.
In a word, YES
They are a joke.
Their MSM is a joke.
More clear to everyone every day.
The next right wing blogging phenomenon from the south, should there ever be one: the NootRhetts.
frankly, dear, I don’t give a damn.
Geez I always thought it was short for neutered !
That “Steve” guy, the Democratic strategist who appears on Hardball, waxed eloquent about Newt being the only GOP with an intellect, his wonderful ideas, and how articulate he is about presenting them. Democratic strategists really shouldn’t sully their own credibility by building up this corrupt adulterous has-been.
Unless we want to run against him in 2012?
Great minds think alike: so did I!!
Anyone know why he changed his name from McPherson to Gingrich?
“Democratic strategist?”
Sigh.
Didn’t see it – I try not to watch Tweety.
I can’t believe we have to defeat Newt again.

And their souls, as well.
Thx for this background; there were several years in the 90s when I was so busy with other things that I didn’t read a newspaper or magazine for months on end, so I’d not realized this was the history.
Illuminating, to say the least.
” After Barack Obama’s win in the 2008 US Presidential Election, Gingrich was rumored to be interested in chairing the Republican National Committee.[48] He has since publicly stated that he is not seeking the position, but is considering running for President in 2012.[49] “
