Hey, remember when Rush said he hopes Obama fails?  And then said it again?  Or how about when religious righties like Gerson were saying that a depression might be spiritually good for us?  How about John Bolton killing at CPAC with his little "joke" about Chicago getting nuked?  Or all the other times a Republican has pined wistfully for another major terrorist attack on American soil (preferably someplace liberal like Chicago, San Francisco, or New York) to remind us all how foolish the rule of law is?

Or on a smaller scale, how about the Colorado state senator who opposes HIV testing for pregnant women because he wants their babies to have AIDS?

What I’m hoping is that, yes, that person may have AIDS, have it seriously as a baby and when they grow up, but the mother will begin to feel guilt as a result of that,” he said. “The family will see the negative consequences of that promiscuity and it may make a number of people over the coming years begin to realize that there are negative consequences and maybe they should adjust their behavior.

And let’s not forget the religious conservatives who attributed tragedies like Katrina, 9/11, and AIDS to divine vengeance for our wicked ways.

Republicans have no empathy, no sense of tragedy.  All they care about is whether other people’s catastrophes help them politically, or teach someone a lesson (preferaby both).  If Katrina had hit during the Obama administration, Rush would have been openly licking his chops, rooting for maximum casualties and destruction to show Americans that Democrats (and government in general) can’t keep them safe.

There’s a pragmatic old saying, "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst."  The Republicans may be the only people on Earth who hope for the worst and prepare for the best.

(On a lighter note, tonight marks my second anniversary as an FDL front-pager.  It’s been a great and unexpected ride, and you all have been absolutely fantastic.  Thanks so much for putting up with me.)
