In the wake of finding out that a detainee has suffered multiple attacks upon his genitals with a scalpel, and that incidents of detainee abuse have INCREASED since December, Long Island Congressman Peter King has found a new scandal [spew alert].
Detainees at Guantanamo are treated far better than most American prisoners in the US jails and prisons I’ve inspected over the years. The unfounded accusations that are so regularly and cavalierly made about Guantanamo are a slander against the brave men and women of our armed forces, who perform their duties at that facility so professionally and under such duress.
If there’s any scandal at Guantanamo, it is that the detainees are treated too well.
I hate to give the New York Post the traffic, but you gotta read this piece of fantasy. He equates being a Gitmo detainee with being a retiree in Palm Beach–I kid you not. This is his quote:
It was particularly galling to observe a vicious terrorist reclining in the sun like a Palm Beach retiree.
I don’t know what kind of information blackout or fantasy world Congressman King is living in, or whether he has simply lost all of his humanity and ability to empathize with the suffering of fellow humans, but people kidnapped and sold to the CIA by rival tribesman, held for years without trial or due process, not convicted of any crimes, are not equivalent to convicted felons incarcerated in US prisons. Though Congressman King seems to think detainees have the Life of Riley compared to felons in the US.
"Detainees at Guantanamo are treated far better than most American prisoners in the US jails and prisons I’ve inspected over the years." Here’s the scoop, Mr. King: You don’t know, and I don’t know, that any of the detainees in Gitmo ever commited any crime or act of war or aggression against the US or any of our citizens. Do you understand why we don’t KNOW that? Because there have’t been trials to establish that with competent evidence.
Now you may BELIEVE that, as an act of some kind of jingoistic faith, but you don’t actually know that. Nobody knows that until there are legitimate trials. Until then, these are simply people held in captivity without due process of law. That is inhumane.

This is disgusting. But then . . . oh, you know.
One vote here for ”his humanity”
LHP, due process of law is situational. Didn’t you know that?
vote two
Repugs get woodies thinking about Fantasy Island.
GET OFF MY FOOKIN’ BEACH!
Both, and how much company does he have? Too much, I’m afraid.

Thanks lhp.
I see nothing mutually exclusive between the two choices of King having lost his mind and his humanity so I vote for Yes as the correct answer.
Recent medical research has determined that flying only on your right wing can cause hallucinatory episodes. The medical term is LindseygrahamcrackersJohnBoehnerJindalism.

You ought to ask King if that means he approves of the treatment of Sean Baker, a Kentucky soldier, at GITMO
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/f…..A9629C8B63
Did he undergo “frequent flier” treatment while he was there, or observe it? Did he undergo complete isolation for months? Was he put on a dog leash and made to do tricks? Did anyone put King in a Palestinian hanging for 18 hours or so before his press conf to let him “share the experience?”
Did he “do lunch” with the hungerstrike victims? Did he talk to the ICRC? Review medical records?
Did anyone threaten to have the women in his family kidnapped and raped? I guess the kicker would be finding out just how many times King was anally penetrated during his tour.
It’s such a joke – I guess his view is that people doing bad things will wait for him to show up and do them in front of him and if they don’t, then that means no bad things are going on.
Kind of explains a lot – from financial and food supply failures, to Bush getting to run amok, to a never ending war that someone seems to keep going on even though John McCain and Lindsey Graham were able to go buy carpets in the bazars.
I second the “yes” vote.
Boy the wing-nut comments on Gitmo are getting fast and furious. Makes me think something big could be coming…
This is an old Republican narrative that detainees are being held in a country club. It is another example of the big lie. It has no basis in reality but that’s not the point. It is to meant to redirect the parameters of the how we talk about Guantanamo. The discussion shifts from is Guantanamo bad or very bad to “some say Guantanamo is a stain on our honor but others say it is a country club.”
LHP, your question implies that he had a mind and a shred of humanity to lose. I would guess he never lost what he never had.
If Congressman King wishes to retire to Guantanamo I see little reason not deny him that privilege.
well now there’s a most excellent suggestion.
I’d like to see him asked if that’s where he would like to retire, or even vacation.
Well, after all, their buddy Rush does call it Club Gitmo…
Along the lines of what I wrote in #14, the NewsHour is talking about the budget so they have Holtz-Eakin, McCain’s nutcase economics adviser on as one of two “experts” to discuss it. The real conversation should be between progressives and Obamites. Instead we get one Obama cheerleader and one divorced from reality cheerleader for massively failed Republican policies.

You know, in a more perfect world, he’d be the winner of the dumbest, least compassionate motherfucker in Congress. Unfortuntaely, I’m not sure he’s even in the to 10 to 20.
But, he’s still a dumb, evil motherfucker. If I were his mother, I’d come back from the dead and beat his ass until he cried like the little punk girl that he is. Unfortunately, he probably got his cruel streak from his mother, ala GWB.
Gutless people are often cruel. Look in the mirror, Congressthing!
Its a smokes screen he claims that we are blaming the troops for torture. Which sure we are if they did it and thats for a trial to decide.
But then he claims the troops didn’t torture and we can’t have trials because that insults the troops and is unpatriotic.
Behind the smokesscreen he never mentions Bush should be First Up for a trial on torture.
He leaves us with the unstated implication that to put Bush on trial is unpatriotic.
Now then on Vets issues like funding VA hospitals just what is Peter King’s record?
Does he Really Care about the Troops?
They are pushing back on any of this seeing the light of day. King is too ignorant a sonofabitch to have any idea what is going on: he’s just performing his duties as a mouthpiece. They probably don’t even have to tell him to tee up, he’s probably on autopilot. I hope he gets his comeuppance too on these matters. To be shown to be the utter evil incompetent ridiculous fool he is that should never be elected to be dogcatcher.
Oh, and they know these are all ”the worst of the worst” because Cheney told them so. spit.
Oh, yes, something’s up. GitMo is out of control. In spite of Obama’s EO which puts all these out of control service members there at extreme risk imo. Obama told them all that is done: they didn’t listen. There will be hell to pay, I have NO doubt.
They have issued their Pentagon report of coverup lies and they have given Holder a brainwashing tour. Heaven knows what they are telling Obama.
It’s deeply shocking. But it won’t hold. This scandal is getting bigger and bigger all the time.
That’s what you get for having a congressman who’s a cross between Paulie Walnuts and Big P*ssy
Like I should talk – we have Arnold

King is doing this outrageous posturing for the publicity. He’s trying to get the Republicans in NY to back him for a run at a Senate seat.

Disabled American Vet’s rating 66 is D+ where I come from of course its better than McCain’s score.
The EU people are coming for a talk about GitMo releasees next week: they are wondering (among many other things) if these people are innocent (not implying they aren’t) then why can’t the US just take them????
Oh, yes indeedy that is a good question isn’t it mateys. A very uncomfortable question. Because these people should be our responsibility now. If you think about it there’s no good reason why someone else should have to take them. Why don’t we take care of our responsibilities?
These evils have many more repercussions we haven’t even thought of.
Can anyone find Obama’s old score?
Duh. Just another one of those upside down Qs in the U.S. war of terror. I’ll even bet there are some Muslim communities here who would be willing to take them.
wow
you NAILED this one, lhp.
EXCELLENT post, and brilliant points made eloquently!
not that that’s unusual, just this one would hit home to ANYONE with half a brain!

Obama should stop the torture now heck give the prisoners to the UN and if we have a case we can prosecute some of them.
Obama should either have a truth commission for low level troops to rat out the higher ups who in turn will rat out the Bushies who in turn will rat out Bush.
Or we can and I feel we should prosecute Bush first because the Buck Should Start at the White House.
Prosecuting troops first thats a GOP smokescreen.
ya know, these rethugs may have I point. Clearly the terrist threat is growing and I appreciate a government that is prepared to take tough measures to fight threats like these:

Oh, I’m sorry. Those are rethug party members.
When where and how often LHP has Peter been to Gitmo or a local Prison or Jail?
For a Law and Order GOPer to visit a prison and talk with inmates when the guards are not around (the only way to get the truth) seems Unlikely
I want to see some valid proof that yes he went to Gitmo and a Local Jail or Prison and that he did not fall for a Potemkin Village snowjob from the warden and the guards who do have vested interests.
At Gitmo the guards want to stay out of international war crimes jail.
American Prison guards are safe from that so they talk about the problems at the jail.
Why? Because the want more funding!
Peter to lead men please try and learn their motivations good and bad your getting Played.
Tell me Pete did we not investigate Watergate because G.Gordon Liddy was a Vet? I’m Guessing Nixon wishes he thought of that one.
If a crime like torture has been committed we investigate who did it. In a place like Gitmo where the prisoners every move is or should be regulated then any torture that happens IS THE GUARDS FAULT!
Its like when priests sleep with alter boys Pete.
Scratch that when guys like you hide guys like Bush’s ordering torture its like the Pope hiding Cardinal Law from testifying about protecting child abusing Priests.

They are also saying that they want stuff like full files, including classified info, if they take detainees and oh yeah – Bagram (and other environs) is on the table. They seem to think that moving the location of the problem isn’t the same as fixing the problem.
Thanks for the link at -12- I hadn’t known about that.
39- sometimes I think that I beat the same dead horses too much, but I also think that sometimes some things are new information for people who haven’t been here forever or who only check in on a few topics, now and then, or who don’t really have the time to bother with lots of comments.
So I’m glad you clicked on it and that it was some new inforamtion. It was very frustrating at the time, when they tried to even deny his disability as arising from the beating that caused him to be life flighted off the base.
ohwell
King, another Rethug cockroach coming out into the light before scurrying back into the cracks in the wall. These people are incredible.
You know, what surprises me aboiut all this is why there haven’t been more ’suicides’ at gitmo — you know, kind of a ‘final solution’.
If you can keep cleaning up after your horses, you can keep putting things in my head.
Keep shoveling.
The DSM manual needs to be updated to account for the peculiar version of white collar sociopathic indifference to human suffering that Peter King embodies.
Suggestions, anyone?
Let’s stipulate that everything King says about the cushy conditions at Gitmo is true. Doesn’t he realize how little that matters?
Our former La. Governor Edwin Edwards is in prison on a corruption conviction. (Don’t get me started on the current one, Kenneth.) It was a white collar crime, and he’s in his 80s, so you can bet wherever he’s been put is a lot more comfy than Gitmo. But it still punishment, because he cannot leave at will. Even a comfortable prison is still a prison, but he’s still better off than the Gitmo guys as he knows when he’ll be let out, if he lives that long.
If King had spent even an hour behind bars, which I doubt he has, he might have a tenth of a clue. I haven’t either, frankly, but at least I have a little imagination.
