I watched Oprah today. The show was about the homeless in Sacramento. I live here and didn’t know it was so bad. There are 6000 to 7000 kids attending the Sac schools who have no home to go to at night and most of the shelters are full. Why did I not know this? I knew about the tent cities but they have grown so in the past months. Houses are standing empty and children are sleeping in tents in the rain. Open the houses back up. Turn on the heat. Send in groceries. Take the money back from the CEOs. Give it to those that really count. It will have to come to this.

I can’t help but wonder how sincere she was about no commissions. Want to know more now about the report due out this summer? Who’s writing and researching the report info?

You know, I’m kinda mixed between hte Leahy and Pelosi views. Of course I want prosecutions for everyone guilty, but I could live with some people getting off with shame as long as the perpetrators of the carnage are imprisoned.

Plus, Leahy is getting old, and has worked his ass off for this country. He deserves to KNOW wtf has gone on, present it to the American people, and “finish” this chapter.

Criminal prosecutions take so long he may never (and many people like him may never) get to see what really happened.

Lots of crooks get let off because of good attorneys, and if a lot of people get immunized, a more complete story may well be told.

She also claimed to be concerned about the flaws in the FISA amendments act, but she was the one who allowed it to be railroaded through the house in a matter of just a few hours. To make matters worse, when the Protect America Act passed, she was immediately on NPR wringing her hands about what an awful bill it was but there was a lack of time before recess, etc. She pitched herself as a dyed-in-the-wool civil libertarian, but when the next chance came along, she blew it. So generally, I think she talks out of both sides of her face.

Another point, i guess, is that immunity would not extend to the ICC. Any discovery could be used by the ICC.

We have always had this dichotomy between the homeless and what to do with them.

Back in the early 90s, an architect in San Francisco proposed a small secure shelter that could be built for about %50 using 3 sheets of plywood. It would have provided shelter from the rain/wind/fog of the area, and also a way for the person inhabiting it to secure their belongings without having to carry everything they own with them in a shopping cart.

Several people offered the use of their properties to situate these little shelters on them, and others were offering donations to get started building them.

Then some group supposedly advocating for the homeless filed a lawsuit to stop them because they ‘looked like a doghouse’ and they didn’t conform to their idea of what a ‘house’ was supposed to look like.

End of project.

In Sacramento a couple of years later, they proposed housing the homeless in the barracks at an abandoned military base. The people would be given clothing, food, personal items, then classes on resume writing and interview skills, and provided daily transportation back and forth from the base to look for work and access other social services.

Then some group supposedly advocating for the homeless filed a lawsuit to stop this because the people were being housed in a barracks (you know, bunk beds in a row in a big room – the kind military people stay in all the time) with communal showers etc.

End of project.

Everytime someone comes up with some kind of temporary (better in my view than a tent or a cardboard box) someone claiming to advocate for the homeless files a lawsuit and gets it stopped because it is violating their civil liberties.

So they continue in tents and cardboard boxes. Everyone moans. But every halfway constructive solution gets sued out of existence.

I am not hopeful.

I don’tknow, maybe. It Either way it’s just sickness… and if they are not court-martialed tomorrow it’s a very bad sign on all accounts.

Pelosi discussed the laws barring those included in Top Secret briefings from disclosing to anyone – anyone – the contents of those briefings, and possible changes to those laws. Presidents, and not just Chimpy, have used that cloak a lot.

But I can’t help but think that it protects the Critters and Senators, as well as the instigators. If she really gets these changes (Hell, if she is sincere about this), things will be very, very different.

I think that anyone not following Obama’s directives right now should be Court Marshalled. Tomorrow morning.

In the late 1990s in Humboldt County, and encampment of the homeless was being offered some jobs through an agreement with the local County Supervisor and a large industrial employer (happened to be a bulb farm). This employer was always looking for workers – and I am sure usually wound up hiring a lot of illegals (which they paid well, gave them ESL classes and took care of their medical issues).

Anyway, long story short – when the Supe and the Personnel guy showed up at the homeless camp – a bunch of ‘advocates for the homeless’ had a huge protest thing going that they were trying to get these people for ’slave labor’ and prevented the Supe and the Personnel guy from coming into the camp. Later they claimed that the Supe and the Personnel guy were just spying on the homeless in order to take their kids away (there were 42 kids living in the camp at the time).

Anyway, shortly after that, the County sued the landowner who had allowed the encampment on his property and forced them to move.

That worked out well for all concerned.

marc andersen was on charlie rose last. he gave a little recount about how the guy that made twitter got vc money for a different startup he was working on, twitter was just a side project, and he saw that the startup was going no where and that twitter was taking off virally. Some small though notable changes in U.S. policy towards Israel 1/3 of the way down the page

I get a few free txt messages with my 1500 minutes, and it can be very useful. I don’t spend nearly as much time jawing on the phone now, and when I get a txt while driving, I don’t have to answer, but I still get the data.

WEnt to the doctor yesterday. He took one look at the x-ray and said to me, “Whatever you are doing, you are doing it exactly right.” Surprised me since I can’t tell any difference when looking at the x-ray. We can safely say barring a blunder surgery is no longer on the table. And that is a huge relief.

He told me to start straightening out my arm! That freaks me completely out since I can still feel the broken parts rubbing against each other… but stretch it I must.

So it’s as good as can be expected at this point, Sunny.

I may be fading fast too. I’m getting ready to start planting my first batches of arugula and meusclin at the end of next week.

I’ve gotta get a lot in – including painting and roof patching – before my scheduled thumb joint rebuild on May 15th. It will put me in one cast or another for three months, then another long rehab period. Playing all the piano music I can now, in case the operation doesn’t really work.
