Step One: Release Binyam Mohamed. What About Step Two?

Binyam Mohamed, on returning to the United Kingdom after being freed from the US prison camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba:

"I hope you will understand that after everything I have been through I am neither physically nor mentally capable of facing the media on the moment of my arrival back to Britain," he said. "I have been through an experience that I never thought to encounter in my darkest nightmares.

"Before this ordeal, torture was an abstract word to me. I could never have imagined that I would be its victim. It is still difficult for me to believe that I was abducted, hauled from one country to the next, and tortured in medieval ways – all orchestrated by the United States government.

"While I want to recover, and put it all as far in the past as I can, I also know I have an obligation to the people who still remain in those torture chambers. My own despair was greatest when I thought that everyone had abandoned me. I have a duty to make sure that nobody else is forgotten."

Is Mr. Mohamed Captain Dreyfus? Possibly not. But Mr. Bush has offered no proof that would support the lawfulness of his detention or treatment at the hands of the United States — our hands. There is evidence of his frequent abuse and torture by the United States and its allies, which constitute federal and international crimes.

Mr. Obama, you revere an earlier African American leader who often quoted this verse from John 8:32, "…and the truth shall make you free." On your watch, will you make that aspiration a reality or relegate it to the pages of school textbooks and children’s biographies?

As a guide, Mr. Bush ignored questions he didn’t want to answer, or asked himself a question he did, a kind of Kobayashi Maru meets political Twister game. His handlers would supply a counter-quote, "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them." (Matthew 18:20) He would then substitute in his mind the NSA or Mr. Cheney for "I". Thus, he gave us a heartfelt answer to the frequency with which he spied on friend and foe alike, while appearing to tell us about keeping promises to others as you would to God. In other words, he refused to answer. What will you do?
