Life’s little certitudes. Red Sox fans will mock Alex Rodriguez as "A-Royd"; Lou Dobbs will not be parading on Cinco de Mayo; and conservatives will go into the sewer and praise intolerance and censorship as glorious "free speech".
Meet the new hero of the Right in America. I hope Malkin can get him an appropriately-tasteful placard.
Geert Wilders—who has publicly compared the Koran to "Mein Kampf"—is scheduled to make public appearances in Washington next week, including a Feb. 27 press conference at the National Press Club. Wilders is seeking to promote his movie "Fitna," an incendiary short documentary film that depicts Islam as a religion of terrorists.
The chief sponsor of Wilders’s National Press Club event is Frank Gaffney, a former Reagan administration Pentagon official who now runs the Center for Security Policy, a prominent neoconservative think tank. Others who hope to meet with Wilders include David Horowitz, a well-known conservative activist who promotes campaigns to fight Islamic extremism.
Yes, espousing that not just a few Muslims are "terrorists" — but ALL of Islam is. KKKlassy. And what a nice group to hang out with, Frank Gaffney and David Horowitz. Well Geert, I’d say that’s Allah’s judgment right there and "the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether."

PVV and GOP — two great tastes that taste great together.
This doesn’t sound helpful. Is it even legal?
Good morning, pups. It’s MoDo and Friedman today. In “Cheney and the Goat Devil” MoDo says one of the great mysteries of the Bush presidency is whether W. ever had an epiphany when he realized that he had been manipulated by Dick Cheney, and if it ever hit him that he trusted the wrong father figure. Probably not, I’d guess, and we mustn’t forget that W had some serious Daddy issues… Mr. Friedman, writing from New Delhi, in “No Way, No How, Not Here,” says the defiance of Islamist terrorists by Indian Muslims stands out against a dismal landscape of Sunni Muslim suicide murderers who have been treated by Arab media as “martyrs.”
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got a selection of bagels with cream cheese. It looks like I’m not the only one who overslept… I’ve got to dash or I’ll be late for work. Have a great day.
Thanks, ‘turk -
Now I have to go take another shower.
Fixed it for ya.
Why is free speech in scare quotes? Look, you are either for free speech or you are against it. It’s really simple. You don’t have to endorse the message or messenger to believe that the person has a right to say what they believe.
Isn’t the left supposed to be in defense of free speech and the political right the guys that run around trying to censor things? So hard to keep up.

Because in the moral relativistic universe of David Horowitz
and his ilk, free speech is in the eye of the beholder.
Coming from someone who teleported from the hard left to
the hard right, Horowitz’ intolerence is hardly a surprise.
Never trust anyone who switches sides. That includes the neocons, but also John Dean.
The guy wants to BAN the Koran — yet portrays himself as being restricted from exercising his free speech — when he hasn’t been — that’s why.
He’s a gigantic hypocrite as well as a bigot.
Grrenspan sez nationalize the banks.
Lindsey Graham sez nationalize the banks.
Well, I suppose those connected to Ronald Reagan’s administration would know terrorism and it makes sense that they would make a film pointing in the opposite direction away from themselves.
Hello
a bit freezy here, with or without the Koran

Raygun’s foreign policy was incoherent.
What would be the effect of that? For example, would all those hidden fees on credit cards disappear? Would they be forced to charge a reasonable interest rate rather than 28%? If so, sounds like a money maker. Everyone would trade all their dept. store cards to nationalized ones? What is the downside (other than the scary notion of socialism)?
eCAHN,
did you watch Frontline last night?
it’s almost as if this mess all came down to a staredown between Paulson v Fuld
Smaller banks get “nationalized” every week.
But if you’re a preening, velvet voiced CEO at Shiti or DoA,
you think that’s only for the little people.
The major banks are bankrupt. The only way out, for better or worse, is nationalization. Of course, not under the stewardship of Obama’s economics team, which was responsible for the mess to begin with. The downside is irrelevant for now because TINA (there is no alternative). Interesting that the radical right is coming around to the idea before those, like Obama’s team, who want to preserve their jobs and reputations.
No, I didn’t. Is there a replay?
It was full of death squads, you know, no different than al-Qaida. ;-)
What?
Plus, they were arming America’s enemies while at the same time trying to project themselves off to be sweet innocent people.
I beg to differ. I’ll bet U.S. has killed a lot more innocents than AQ.

I thought it was good, and learned a lot about how it went down, focus on Bear Stearns and Lehman’s
In a speech in NYC yesterday, apparently, according to cspan.
I didn’t realize how Geithner was part of it last year.
Geithner made a great speech in something like 06 or 07, but did nothing in his regulatory role. The man’s an idiot.
I don’t know why people insist on calling right wing “think tanks.” They are “belief tanks.” All of their so called research is twisted like a pretzel to fit their preconceived ideology. Saying they are “think tanks” gives them a veneer of intellectual honesty that they do no deserve.
i’ve been trying to think my way through the various ways nationalization could be done (just for the biggies like citi). biggest questions is what happens to the depositors. any insights?
Morning all,
Nationalize the banks and while we are at it health care too!
good point. and good morning all.
you’re right. Belief Tanks, not think tanks
Depositers will be protected. FDIC.
It seems so OBVIOUS
and also the way of least pain in both spheres
True, that!
What, you don’t like Do It Yourself Healthcare?
Thought Frontline did a good job of laying out the timeline of the economic meltdown but they didn’t touch the underlying causes of the crisis. Nothing on Greenspan, Phil Gramm, the religion of the free market and deregulation. Guess they thought America couldn’t handle the truth.
maybe not such a great speech? hugh’s diary: Did Timothy Geithner predict the financial meltdown?
IRT nationalizing the banks, how would that be done? Congress would have to approve it? Or Obama orders it?
Is that a dumb question?
Propoganda tanks might be more appropriate.
citi has operations in something like 100 countries.
my head is going to explode.
Good point. Death squads have different levels of expertise many of which got lots of training during the Reagan years. ;-) No wonder Ronnie got Alzheimer’s and lived with the disease for 20 years, because it’s better to forget than to face criminal charges!
school of the americas is still going strong, although under a different name.
yeah I’d like to see more on that aspect. It WAS only an hour tho focused on the meltdown
there are no dumb questions
or should I say
Are there dumb questions?
and I can’t answer yours
Belief implies it is based on faith alone which is impervious to facts. There could be left wing propaganda tanks whose propaganda is based on facts. Right wing belief tanks will never let facts get in the way of their faith.

From TPM:
My husband was raised in the Southern Baptist Church. He has terrible childhood memories of being forced to watch movies about the Soviet Union and the “culture of evil festering in the USSR”. This was back in the 60’s and 70’s. Followed by preaching frenzies to get the church members whipped into frothing hate. He saw the contradiction spiritually as a child.
Some of the content was totally bogus and filled with lies but was effective in spiraling fear and hate (except in my husband). He felt what he was exposed to was a form of child abuse and he was aware of that as a child.
Geert’s work is no different from my husband’s childhood experience, just a bigger media format to splash the abuse of lies into the larger masses.
“They” (power craved evangelicals who control church members and cause divisiveness through dysfunctional behavior that incites fear) stay the same, says Mr. Klynn.
Religious right wing dysfuctional, lying propaganda non-profits.
No tanks.
if it’s a dumb question you have company in asking it. (see mine @30). i agree on the need to take over the banks – but think it needs to be done with massive international cooperation to coordinate something like a world wide bank holiday. if we do it on our own wo thinking through the global implications, imo we risk sending the world’s economy (which btw is also ours) deeper into a tailspin.
Geert Wilders is a fool. The man is a hate-mongerer. In a couple of weeks he will be judged by Dutch court for hate-mongering. Last week the British government kicked him out of the country for being a hate-mongerer. His electorate are poor educated county folks and underclass workers who blame others for their own miserable lives. The guy talks about muslims as nazi’s talk about jews and kkk’ers talk about black folks, it’s pathetic and very simple-minded. His party, the PVV (Party for Liberty, no joke) dwells on fear, hate and stupidity. For the time he will be in the USA, please scrutinize everything he has to say, but don’t be surprised if he tries to offend the ones who ask smart questions, that’s his way; Hate-mongering and offending everyone who tries to put things in perspective.
I wish you people success with Geert Wilders, maybe you can keep him, that would be nice…
Is Horowitz still on his crusade to rid all colleges of libruls?
The Bush righwing nutjobs barred Cat Stevens from entering the United States. Yet, we are allowing this neocon rightwing nutjobber Geert to freely visit this country. This is truly 1984. “War is Peace.” “Hate is Love.” Sometimes I feel like I’m in bizarro world.
Yes. Only went there to see what his points of view on the issues were, then discovered his racists views. That did it for me, plus the Obama bashing.
