It was only a matter of time before Republicans made their favorite play – "feint to the left". From the DCCC’s blog:
Representative Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-09) – "Luetkemeyer said the project is considered ‘shovel ready’ and that’s what the economy needs. President Darrell Krueger and Luetkemeyer discussed the educational benefits of the economic stimulus package." [KTVO-TV, 2/17/09]
Representative Don Young (AK-AL) – "Alaskan Congressman Don Young won a victory for the Alaska Native contracting program and other Alaska small business owners> last night in H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. [Congressman Don Young's Press Release; 2/13/09]
Representative Ken Calvert (CA-44) – "All of us in the Inland Empire will do what we can to direct as much money as we can." [The Press Enterprise; 2/13/09]
Representative John Mica (FL-07) – "I applaud President Obama’s recognition that high-speed rail should be part of America’s future," [Congressman John Mica Press Release; 2/13/09]
In the past three weeks, House Republicans unanimously voted no on the very economic recovery investments that they are boasting about. [H.R.1, #46, 1/28/09], [H.R. 1, #70, 2/13/09]
And Think Progress reports that Kit Bond (R-MO.) can’t seem to recall whether the stimulus plan will create jobs or not.
You have to admire the ability to utter this shit with a straight face.

We need ads to remind voters about this on election day. Then we say like the Stimulus it would have been bigger if only Congressman Fill in the blank did not insist on money for tax cuts.
How lucky Republicans are not to have to operate under the constraints of reality, facts, consistency, integrity, an informed constituency, etc..
Just as Dana Perino never claimed we weren’t in recession,
the congressional Republicans never opposed the stimulus.
Move along, nothing to see.
Obama handed the jerks the tax cuts on a silver platter and still got jilted. Obama tried to work with Repugs and made a lousy bill loaded with tax cuts.
Didn’t really need the Rethugs. Shoulda made a good spending bill. This bill is Obama’s baby including the tax cuts that ruin its effectiveness. Like hopping around on one leg.
OT: One good thing about Sebelius getting tabbed for HHS is that we won’t have to suffer through another gubernatorial senate appointment.
Repukes can’t understand stimulus packages, but they sure as hell understand free money.
It sure would be funny if the Gov of a state where the congresscritter was bragging they brought home the beef rejected their portion of the stimulus…..
So Gov Goodhair is going to reject the TX portion of the stimulus …. isn’t he running for a new term now?
I was told there is a provision that says if the governor of a state refuses to do anything with the stimulus money in a set period (60 days?), then the state legislature can take over with a concurrent resolution or something and spend it.
If the Ds had any spine they’d put a provision in spending bills that any senator who doesn’t vote for it gives up 1/2 the amount that would otherwise go to his state.

I was on record quite some time ago saying that the first time Obama tried to “reach across the aisle”, he’d get punched right in the mouth
I’m counting that one as a correct prediction.
Now let’s see how smart a guy Obama really is…
Except how do you account for the states where the R Senator voted against but the D Representatives voted for?
Or the R Representative voted against and the D Senators voted for.
Once you get into punitive mode, where does it stop?
I’m still trying to figure out why the hell the Ds don’t force the Republicans to filibuster. That would put the Republicans on record as wanting the country to fail.
I don’t want to hear Boxer’s genteel “oh, we don’t do that here” excuse, either.
You have to admire their ability to
utter thisstand there with shitwith a straighton their face.Hear! Hear!
1/2 per senator. So if one voted for & one against, the state gets half. If both vote against the state gets nothing.
That’s what Rachel said tonight.
If you said it and I didn’t, I was sure thinkin’ it. That was one bit of common-sense-based knowledge that was floating around the liberal blogosphere. Yes, you were quite right indeed.
No, got that wrong. Rachel said they should get rid of the supermajority. Frank Rich said, no let the Rs filibuster, so the voters can see exactly how obstructionist they are. Like Gingrich closing down the govt.
I’d like to think GMTA, but I think it was just a coincidence. ;-)
Good point, IMO they elected a republic, the whole country should know better. Those who elected them must have similar views.
Don’t want to diminish your glory, but many of us thought he was nuts for trying.
It does seem to have gotten him some good will with the voters, though, and he’s peeling off some R govs, so there were some benefits for the effort. Not sure it was worth the cost, though.
I’m still trying to figure out why the hell the Ds don’t force the Republicans to filibuster.
Let’s see…. what’s that Senator’s name…. he’s from Searchlight, Nevada, and reputedly has some power in the Senate…
damned if I can remember the dweeb’s name.
But like I say, you are then punishing those states where the D Representatives are held hostage by the R senators. And surprisingly enough, there are a few situations like that. Kentucky for instance has D Reps for Louisville and Lexington but 2 R Senators.
but many of us thought he was nuts for trying.
Oh, I was in that group too. Never said that I thought it was a good idea, but since he kept campaigning on it, it seemed apropos to make said prediction….
“…force the Republicans to filibuster.”
Well, WT, if we say this often enough, since the need of doing this is likely to continue, it’s just ‘possible’ that the d’s will get the ‘message’.
‘Pollyticks’ being the (ahem!) ‘art of the possible’.
Of course, round about now, I’d even settle for a little ‘craft’ on the part of the d’s …
;~DW
It’s up to the voters to throw the bastard out. If not, they take the consequences.
So once we go into punitive mode, where does it stop? What happens if the Rs take back control and reverse the situation and punish the D states for having elected Dems? What then?
Where does it stop?
If it starts, then it will be ‘an eye for an eye’ and so on.
Better, as you clearly believe, not to start.
The ‘people’ beating on the ‘people’ is totally counterproductive, it’s bad enough that the politicians and the Rove-Limp-paw-Norquist crew are doing it.
watertiger has another post 2 flights up
Politics in America…what are ya gonna do?
Now, if some of those ‘Conservatives’ want to avoid spending stimulus money in their states (Bobby Jindal, you hear me?) they can send me about $100K and send the rest to California (they need it bad).
That’s a stimulus plan I could support.
