Republicans lie about everything, big and small. They just do. This week was filled with examples given to us by Andy Card, Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney, Mitch McConnell, and Tony Blankley. In fact, if a prominent Republican was flapping his or her gums this week, it was very likely that a lie is what popped out from between them.
Taking the liars in order:
– Former Bush Chief of Staff Andy Card took pot shots at Obama for not wearing a jacket in the Oval Office like Card’s ex-boss George W. Bush always did. Except, of course, that he didn’t. Neither did any of his immediate predecessors. But trust Card, who had no problem with his boss invading Iraq and murdering hundreds of thousands of persons (and breaking the Treasury to do it), to try and make up a lie about cheap symbolism over actual substance.
– When he wasn’t using lies to inflame his listeners into flooding Capitol Hill switchboards over the stimulus package, Rush Limbaugh was lying about Guantanamo.
– Speaking of lying about Gitmo, guess what Dick Cheney was doing, with an assist from The Politico? He lied so badly and blatantly that he nearly drove the normally-phlegmatic Lawrence O’Donnell to rage on Countdown Wednesday night.
– Know how guys like Mitch McConnell and Tony Blankley have been citing what they say are Congressional Budget Office claims that the stimulus package won’t do any good? Guess what — they’re lying. Here’s what CBO Director Douglas Elmendorf actually told Congress recently about the stimulus package: "In CBO’s judgment, H.R. 1 would provide a substantial boost to economic activity over the next several years relative to what would occur without any legislation."
Spread the word, everyone. Tell all your friends and rellies: Republicans lie about everything. Everything.

That’s because, as I’ve said before, they have very poor vocabularies and do not know the difference in definition between ‘truth’ and ‘lie’.
Rather climb a tree to tell a lie than stand on the ground and tell the truth.
Of course, I could be completely wrong, and they know exactly what they are doing when they do it.
As Ive said before: That distinction = the test for competency. Guess what? THey Fail.
I’m so glad that Sensible Centrists™ Joe Lieberman and Susan Collins
have saved America from Head Start and the National Science Foundation.
Rush Limbaugh lie? Are you sure?
So now that it looks like a really dogshit “stimulus” package is what’s going to end up passing, we’d better start thinking about what we do when it fails…because it will. Personally, I’m thinking of relocating to somewhere quiet…like Mars. I hear they’ve discovered water there…
their behavior seems to be getting worse with each passing week too. Based on yesterday’s congressional demonstration alone I’m really starting to despair that the coutry will survive the pathetic depravities of these degenerates. Limbaugh is their lyin’ chief strategist, and Cheney’s their lyin’ moral conscience. Palin’s their lyin’ mascot.
Rs have to lie because the truth would finish them – and it’s apparent that the lies are no longer working. Was just reading an article that Rush has a 21% approval rating ! The leader of their party has about the same rating as Bush did. Love it.
Obviously by design. No principles (claims to the contrary notwithstanding) and most definitely no shame. The right-winger end game is to take back power, no matter how many people get hurt in the process. The defensive / offensive posture right now should be to start calling these bastards “unamerican”, and find a few high-profile, shock-type talking points to explain why. Push them hard anywhere and everywhere an opening is seen.
in a country where a full quarter of children go hungry regularly, they appear to have problems with children’s nutrition Programs as well (also cut from the package). ’cause there’s no obvious relationship between malnourished children and depravation caused by the Bush Recession we need to stimulate ourselves out of, and ’cause starving children is the rethug way. I’m beyond disgusted and feeling a bit helpless. How do we end this racket of a party?
I started thinking about the big whoppers R’s told in just the last week starting with Lindsey Graham ‘Americans just don’t want this spending bill’ but I quickly lost count. Lies trip easily off their tongues every time they open their mouths. Much easier to count how many times they tell the truth which is probably close to zero.
So, I was watching Rachel last night as she went into a “Bullpucky” riff (which was brilliant, by the way) and I was left with the dead sucking feeling in my gut that I think PW must be addressing. They LIE! They LIE! They LIE!
But the meme I came away from Rachel with was a question of when? When, oh when will it actually become ok to respond to those liars, “Hey, you’re a freakin’ liar. You have been for years and there are real consequences to the problem that many stupid people believe your lies. It’s gotten us, in a large part, to where we are today.”
The media has long abdicated its job as arbiter of the truth on these matters, but I just hope to hell that some of the more ethical souls will rise to Rachel’s call to arms and find enough moral fiber to call “Bullpucky” when the usual flow of misinformation starts from the Right wing dittoheads. It’s not like you can’t see it coming–or smell it for that matter–it always has the same shape and feel and usually ends with, “Brown people are bad for business; if you love God save the business and screw the brown folk.”
The new media mantra has to be, “I’m sorry Senator, you’re entitled to your own opinion, but you’re not entitled to your own facts. We’ll be correcting your misstatements as we air your Bullpucky. Thanks for your time. Bye bye now.”
Go Rache!
RE earlier thread about the most vulnerable among us, please be sure to catch this one. I felt a little verklempt after viewing.
I’m guessing I won’t even get through five fingers on that one.
It’s tragic, isn’t it?
Remember, one of the basic philosophical underpinnings of the GOP and the Right Wing is this: Poor people are that way because they are either a) bad, b) stupid or a combination of the two. They do believe that. So, therefore, QED, having programs that benefit that group or their children is wasted money.
They lie because the corporate media provides them a platform for spreading the lies unfiltered and the Democrats lack the courage of their convictions to call them out.
It should be mandatory for all rethugs to take remedial arithmetic before they are sworn in. Maybe then they would realize that Iraq wouldn’t pay for itself, that UAW workers don’t make $73 per hour, that 61 released detainees have not returned to the battlefield, and that there is going to be a difference in the interest payment on balances of 780 billion and 940 billion which McConnell said would be the same last night.
Since Arizona brand new Republican Gov and heavily loaded legislature plan to cut 40% across the board K->University on the education budget ….. We can thank them that from being 49th in the state in education we will 101….. after many African nations and Afghanistan…..
Yup. Hence, my suggestion to start calling them “unamerican”, and find a few high-powered, unassailable talking points to explain why. If the phrases are concise and catchy, they might just have some impact. If anybody has any other ideas, I’m open. The point is, we’d better do something…and do it fast.
So far I haven’t thought of one unless someone slipped & unintentionally said something true.
yeah, but that 21% are the Session’s taliban fanatics, who are perfectly happy to hold the other 81% hostage to achieve their vision of paradise with the umpteen virgins (presumably, the permanent orgy in Rush’s Palm Beach “compound”)
Certainly not by giving money to the DSCC or DCCC.
this is a terrific post, check out this link from crooks;
Something kinda like Pete Sessions was spouting the other day?
oops 79%… I really can add ;-)
Mark Twain – “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.”
The statement refers to the persuasive power of numbers, the use of statistics to bolster weak arguments, and the tendency of people to disparage statistics that do not support their positions.
Wing nuts have a fixed world view and cherry pick their facts to justify their world view…..
In the spirit of “bipartanship” the Republicans were allowed to water down the bill so that now 42% is tax cuts. And how many Republicans signed on? 3. This is a tremendous victory for the Republicans. They have manipulated their plutocratic colleagues in the Democratic party to craft a fatally flawed bill that most sane economists warn has too little stimulus. They can then say they were oppposed to the bill in the first place. Obama and the Democrats will be blamed for the failure. The plutocrats will slap their colleagues on the back demonstrating that the system really works. For the plutocrats yes, for the people, no.
Let’s face it…the lies work. They’re all debunked within 24hrs but it’s too late, the lie is out there and people are believing it.
and this link; is right on topic;
it’s not only that people believe it, here’s the real problem;
they have learned that all they have to do is repeat their propaganda and that propaganda becomes “a fair ipinion”
Everyone knows that the NSF is communist-backed. And head start? Clearly Al-Qaeda. Lieberman swoops in to save us. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m certainly relieved.
That’s a fact! Perhaps by donating to the Progressive Democrats of America? They would save us the trouble of starting from scratch as they have a ground game in place and they support what we (I) support.
Did I post the latest questions Zogby is asking here? It’s so heavily skewed to the right (even for Zogby) it’s practically a push-poll.
And that’s why I continue to say that going on the offense will require a few indisputable, zingy talking points, widely circulated.
We can expect the Republicans to successfully block any meaningful health care reform. They have a proven tactic and they will use it as effectively as used on the stimulus bill. The Democrats, most, lacking principles will go along in the spirit of plutocratic bipartanship. Once again the plutocrats win and the people lose.
I had lunch yesterday with a County Supervisor. He hopes to get teh new governor up to the reservations to see how people live and what is reality for them. He just can’t understand why the Republican legislators are so blind.
OMG. That’s so revealing, isn’t it, of his inner soul if he has one.
That’s the endgame, alright. Hence, the reason I’m moving to Mars.
IMHO, they simply have no reverence for the truth. When they say these things they don’t think of themselves as lying, because they felt in their gut that it was true. And if you present them with evidence that they lied and call them liars, they’ll feel righteous indignation because they thought it was true when they said it.
So, technically speaking they aren’t lying. Rather, they are full of shit.
I’m still holding out some hope that Rahm’s gonna show up and gleefully do gratuitously cruel things to ‘em. Oh where are you Rahm??? We need your inborn nastiness now.
Not only can’t they confirm that anyone released from Gitmo has returned to a life of terror, they can’t even prove that any of them were ever terrorists in the first place. Nor can they prove the existence of one Osama Bin Laden, but that doesn’t prevent EVERY talking head and politician in the United States from dutifully stating that he’s alive and well, or at least implying as much, every single time they mention his name.
Assume literally everything is a lie:
– William Casey, CIA Director (from first staff meeting, 1981)
Did you think he was just kidding?
We have a funky old van in the driveway that my husband drove in the 70’s to haul his instrument to gigs. The license plate reads They Lie. I call it theyliemoblie. Well, one time I was driving it when my car was out of commission and some guy came up to me in a parkinglot and asked, who? Who lies? All men? Is that what you really think? Uh, dude…get a grip. Funny how that works, isn’t it? But, but, but.
Surreal moment on NPR this morning:
Joe Scarborough, being interviewed by Scott Simon,
quotes AP headline “Obama shows GOP a clenched fist on stimulus bill” .
A perfect storm of media circle I-can’t-say-it-but-it-rhymes-with working.
As long as the plutocracy has a monopoly on the media nothing will change. The internet is not an alternative to the corporate media where most peoples opinions are shaped. The plutocrats know that and as long as they have that monopoly the game is rigged.
Note who the CIA perceives “the enemy” to be?
It’s you and me.
When will Obama direct his energy away from criminal republicans? Aren’t Republican lobbyists our enemy? Look at this at a bailout gathering

and look who is in the picture, the one and only John Engler, destroyer of Michigan economy and President of the National Association of Manufactures, a one man crime spree.

Mr Obama..if you lie down with dogs you get the fleas, right?
You can get to Rachel’s commentary here.
There continues to be ongoing protests against the Education cuts….. and yes a huge number of ASU students took the light rail to the capital to join that protest…..
The AZ Repug party did a concerted effort in the last 4 years to mow over any moderate Republicans. I know two in my district and one ran as a state senator….. He was a PC in the GOP and they actually kicked him out for speaking out about what they were doing……. So we are stuck with the Russell Pierce and JD Hayworth types……
REALLY hoping that the DOJ & Conyers are going to investigate Sheriff Joe……
Remember that one of the reasons the bill has so much tax relief is that the Senate added a fix to the alternative minimum tax, which is going to pass separately on the assertion (untested by truth-tellers) that it unintentionally affects middle class people. I think it is given a figure of $70bn.
They are blind because they choose to be so. It may be a cliche but “there are none so blind as those who will not see.”
They do not want to see what and where things are bad. I call it being willfully obtuse.
The hope that was garnered by Obama’s victory is rapidly fading. Republicans have demonstrated they still control the narative, the media and the legislative process. The Democrats remain weak willed, unfocused and unprincipled. The stage has been set for a catastrophe for the people. The plutocrats of both parties will be just fine, the people not so much.
Here is what Sen Isakson of GA sent his “people”, ie citizens of the state, this morning–see if you can find a scintilla of truth!!:
Dear Friends,
Last night the Senate announced an agreement on an economic stimulus bill that would cost anywhere between $780 billion and $1.1 trillion. Debate is scheduled to continue through the weekend with a vote to cut off debate on Monday.
While proponents of the legislation claim it will stimulate the nation’s economy, I firmly believe it does not do enough to confront the problems causing America’s economic downturn. As a result, I will vote against cutting off debate on Monday.
This legislation is yet another example of Congress throwing money at the symptoms but not getting to the root of the problem. While there are some good provisions in this bill, it is primarily spending money on programs that should not be categorized as stimulus and will not do anything to help our economy.
While I am pleased the Senate agreed unanimously to add my homebuyer tax credit to this bill, I am disappointed the Senate was not able to eliminate the wasteful spending and make meaningful steps towards restoring our nation’s economy.
Sincerely,
Johnny Isakson
That would be nice. It is on the radar screen with the NYT’s editorial against Joke.
I work for UA Cooperative Extension and was to talking with a county director the other day and she told me they might have funds for salary but none for operations.
Now with Brewer warning about bigger cuts next year I fear we might start losing faculty in the universities. The students are going to need longer to graduate now with course cutbacks looming. That will cost mom and dad more. What it takes to get people really fed up in Arizona I don’t know. We have so many dinosaurs in this state.
Nicely stated. Depressing, but true. There are a few bright spots (relatively speaking). Maddow and Olbermann come to mind. But their effect is like spitting in the ocean compared to the magnitude of the propaganda machine out there…
I fear you are right.

Since 1996, the task of the CIA to coopt the mass media has been made much simpler. Less than two dozen corporations now control or own over 90% of the nearly 10,000 newspapers, magazines, and radio and TV stations in America.

Digg it.
The blind ones in Phoenix make the Texas legislature look very moderate. This is the Utopia that the Red State Strike Force has wet dreams about. If people really want to understand how stupid Republican ideology is then watch Arizona for the next 2 years.
Thanks for opening that. I dugg.
Linky no worky.
Rachel Maddow is awesome. Thanks for posting that clip–it’s a must watch.
Ooops that was for noonan @ 48.
I also heard that the Gov ordered the closing of the Polytechnical campus of ASU which can be the future of AZ….. I don’t get it……
Me sorry msmolly

Engler very bad man..in my opinion.
The only hope for getting better legislation from this congress is to cut the pukes out of the debate altogether. The Blue Dogs represent their ideas anyway, making the pukes redundant.
If those Blue Dogs do not work with their own party in a time of crisis, the Blue Dogs must go. Or, the party that accomodates the Blue Dogs must go.
The only people who believe Rush, are the ones to whom he speaks what they want to hear, and the illiterate who
don’t know any better!Rachel,on the other hand can document each and eveyry topic she chooses to discuss, and
Rupert Merdock recently stated, quote”Fox news has never relied on facts in broadcasting”,who knew?
Time to man the pitchforks and storm the Senate, says I. 80 to 90 percent of them need to go.
I saw a graph the other day, rush is hated almost as much as bush, it is bizarre they pay him anything at all, he is one of the reasons the republican party is reviled
you got that right.
well, they did call themselves the taliban. The Afghan version was opposed to all progress as being a threat to orthodoxy, and they shut down all the schools save centers of religious indoctrination. There are some eerie points of similarity here.
I lived in Michigan during the Engler years, and I agree totally!
I agree totally. In my view’Blue Dogs are nothing but closet Republicans.-This comes from a Yellow Dog Democrat.
I think some mayors and city council folks are getting upset. Idon’t know if Brewer order the campus closed, I think that would have to be an ASU and Board of Regents decision. If Brewer doesn’t think that education is necesary then she can defund all the schools. Maybe the University of Phoenix is good enough for her.
Amazing isn’t it? Someone like Limpballs who has been so wrong for so long, not to mention so inflammatory and insulting, gets all kinds of exposure in the MSM to spew dangerously truthless conservative talking points.
Stupid is good for the rethug party. Why would they want to erode their base by educating people?
How about a HUGE tax on beer in AZ. If beer sales are hurt, a prominant Arizonian might begin to see things differently.
To be able to lie, you first have to know the truth….so you can twist the lies around it. Now that maxim does not apply to the sheeple who wouldn’t know a lie from the truth if it smacked them up upside the head…all *they* know how to do is regurgitate the lies generated by the people who *do* know the truth but choose to lie about it.
Does that make any sense at all?
Did you notice that they’ve been successful in mocking protest marches as ineffectual to the point that no one bothers. I don’t know who ‘they’ are, I only know that somehow, someway, it is now seen as a waste of time and energy to protest. It’s also seen as a tool for only the most extreme and somehow uncool. I even saw Jon Stewart make fun of a group who went to DC to protest the war. A bunch of losers wasting their time.
As long as it is not brew pub beers!
Tax cuts put money into people’s hands immediately. Government spending takes 25% for administrative costs off the top immediately and mostly are drags on the economy because they produce nothing.
Well we need a dogfight…YellowDogs v. BlueDogs. The party needs to reach some kind of consensus about its values.
Think you are absolutely right. The Rs in DC know the truth but they have one agenda and the truth would keep them from obtaining their goals. You have to give them credit for never taking their eyes off the ball. Dems could take lessons.
Happy News from Raw Story:US Attorney probed RNC chairman for financial fraud
What idiots!
cruel for the beer drinkers, tho
I personally believe that the reason that Republicans always cut education funding, is that they feel if they can
keep the american people dumbed down enough, they will have a better chance to promote their agenda.
Yep. One thing about the Dems…the multiplicity of voices in an inclusive party makes organizing difficult. Still, we should all be able to agree that spending on Head Start is better than throwing money at the Pentagon. Isn’t that a basic?
From TPM: You Won’t Believe Who’s Helping Push the Anti-Solis Campaign
Yellow dog Democrat from WIki
It seems that we need a little more sophistication here
Yeah, I know. Protest and marches don’t seeem to have much effect these days. A change in tactics is needed. Perhaps stage civil disobedience outside the Capitol, blocking the road as Senators try to leave in their limos, with signs “Get back in there and do your jobs” “Do right by working Americans” and such. I don’t know, it would need to be something provocative to draw media coverage.
Oh, that liberal media! Jonathan Alter was on the Ron Reagan show yesterday, and at 71 minutes into it, they were talking about whom Obama might appoint to replace Justice Ginzberg. Per Alter:
Calllers to C-Span’s Washington Journal make it more evident with each passing day: the FCC MUST reinstate the Fairness Doctrine.
Hound these bastards where they feel the safest. Hound them in their home states, hound them at restaurants, hound them wherever they congregate.
hehe. Let’s hope that document wasn’t quite sent “accidentally.”. I think the president needs to embrace a scorched earn policy – either the rethugs come back to the reservation and start working for the president’s agenda or he directs the DOJ to focus on investigating and prosecuting shrubco and congressional rethugs. If we’re all going to be spending the next 4 yrs hungry and cold, at least he’ll be able to keep us entertained this way. The president must be prepared to define the limits of bipartisanship and post-demonstrate and demonstrate clearly and brutally what he can do to those who exceed those limits. A fee rethugs in orange jumpsuits should communicate this message quite nicely.
I thought the part removed re spousal abuse was very important, too, but I guess Rs are really into that.
I had just read that wiki entry before posting. What I meant was that the party loyals who would never vote for a puke ought to be calling the shots of the party instead of the odious Blue Dogs.
Blue Dogs have no problem voting with the R’s on vital legistlation like the stimulus. They gotta go.

we need a bit more outspoken language, and less soft spoken language to accomplish our agenda!!
Hear hear!
I have an idea…why not offer up a document to every employee of Fox and Limbaugh’s company, and the Republican staffers, etc. that they will give over an equivalent amount from their paychecks to their employers that would have been the equivalent of the “payroll tax” vacation.
Quite simple. Since payroll taxes cover Unemployment, SSI, and Medicare contributions…and those are deferred benefits to employees…if they become unemployed, retire, get ill, etc. then the employees that support McCain, Boehner, and others should simply deduct an equivalent amount from their paychecks and give it to their bosses who are paying this money (eventually to them). That would obviously stimulate the economy, probably help their employers stay in business (I heard NewsCorp is bleeding with those huge contracts to their “top talent”), and create a bigger Conservative media.
Lemme see, those deductions would be about 20% of my paycheck. I’m sure that would be nothing to those that work for Limbaugh! Plus it’s all voluntary…if you didn’t like doing this you could quit!
Maybe it could be expanded into a lot of other areas…like corporate taxes that go to schools. Republicans could take that amount out of their salary and give it directly to their bosses to compensate them for those Federal and State taxes…this could be so efficient tin helping business owners that employees might have no wages at all…but a nice, secure job! In fact, business might be so good that they’d be asked to do overtime!
But…but…I heard he ran as a “Steele, Democrat” then! So what do you expect ;-)
Sounds like someone sent the document out a bit before Obama became President. But maybe it happened after the election when the DOJ staff realized that they might not face retaliation for exposing an investigatory cover-up.
It’s almost humorous that the RNC has been screaming bloody hell about ACORN “independent contractors” who actually ripped off ACORN itself with fake names that would never have been used to actually vote….when the embezzlement and voter fraud by their own runs to the very highest levels. The Steele spokesmans response is “who would trust a convicted felon”…except that Fabian is the guy that was Steele’s Campaign Finance Director!
Apparently that unauthorized transfer was disclosed not only by Fabian, but confirmed by other Maryland Republicans and Steele staffers in the 2006 Campaign. Why it was not investigated by the DOJ becomes a matter of some importance in potential criminal investigations of influence brokering of former US Atty Generals appointed by the Bush Administration.
And I always thought that “Brown Sugar” was a reference to sex with a black woman…apparently the term has changed meaning since the 60’s and 70’s…now it means something like “Screwing Contributors and the Public, Unlimited”.
I’m reminded of the Seinfeld episode in which Jerry asks George to help him beat a lie detector test. George’s advice: “remember Jerry, it’s not a lie if you believe it”.
This is why I think all this talk of post-partisanship or bipartisanship is just drivel. You can’t have a substantive debate to reach a productive compromise with people who are so impervious to evidence contradicting their position that they will say that the sky is green (and convince themselves that it’s true) if they think it would support their argument.
An intellectually honesty argument about some legitimately debatable point should be a non-negotiable pre-condition for any concessions to the purveyors of the ideology and practices that have made a stimulus bill necessary. What Obama has done in this entire process is provide affirmative action for not only bad ideas but ideas that have in practice proved to be dangerous in a Quixotic search for support from those who will never give it to him.
Let’s face it. If the “New New Deal” succeeds it will remove the last thin shreds of support for the trickle-down, voodoo, debt-fueled ownership society that the right wing has foisted on us since the days of Ronny Raygun. That’s why the Republicans are reduced to arguing that they sky is green. If only Obama and the Dems would realize this they would understand that they have the upper hand here. Yeah, a cornered animal fighting for its survival is dangerous, but it’s still, you know, cornered and fighting for its survival.
OTOH The Republicans seem AWFULLY concerned over ACORN’s threat to prevent the eviction of people who are living in foreclosed properties. I suspect that this is because it has the potential of getting thousands in local communities quite aware and active…and result in the local law enforcement either suspending enforcement of the Republican-backed attacks on the poor and middle class. I think they also fear that this will spread to their own District offices in the “Red Counties”.
There was a recent article in the Sacramento Bee about the disproportionate effects of the California State Budget cuts. Turns out that the biggest impacts are not in Coastal “blue” urban areas, but in the “Red” rural and Central Valley counties and districts that have limited alternative community resources and have had higher unemployment rates. Add that to the fact that the Republicans in Congress and State have been very poor legislators in obtaining economic development and social support for their districts and these areas are facing a tsunami of homelessness, foreclosures, bankruptcies, closures of clinics, diminished public transportation, job losses, etc. The rise in complaints about their local representatives who have done little “constituent service” except for the wealthy. Many of these areas were living high on the industries of “Real Estate, Retirees, and Recreation” (with some big box and auto-malls thrown in for good measure). All of that has been impacted severely. The core of Republican support has been hit with a hammer. They are really under-going cognitive dissonance…with their “system” of what they have been told for decades as best, failing around them. The danger is that some really do go insane if they cannot resolve emotional and objective contradictions.
RE: “Republicans lie about everything, big and small.”
PERHAPS IT’S PART OF THEIR “CREATING REALITY”.
Tax cuts might put money into people’s hands immediately, but they actually have to spend that money for it to generate a stimulative effect. Hence, any tax cuts must be targeted to low and slightly higher income individuals for it to work. High-income individuals will not spend the money. And capital gains tax cuts? What capital gains? In case you haven’t been keeping up with current events, there’s nothing but a sea of capital losses out there.
What color is the sky in your world?
