I never ever understood how they could hoodwink everyone into not saying… but hey, when you all got in, THAT is when there was a successful terrorist attack on our country. When YOU were in charge that happened. When YOU were in charge people died in the Katrina hurricane needlessly. When YOU were in charge terrorism had it’s best recruiting decade ever.

If you make cookies or anything else baked out of peanut butter, it could have been swimming in Salmonella spp., but it will be ok out of the oven. The bacteria don’t tolerate temperatures even half of what it takes to bake something. Just don’t contaminate it with fresh peanut butter afterwards.

For that matter, raw organic vegetables that are grown close to the ground (lettuce, any root crop, tomatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, etc.) are a bit more likely to be contaminated with fecal bacteria because organic growing makes more use of manure as fertilizer. Washing just doesn’t do it because not only are the bacteria in cracks and crevices on the plant, but recent research has shown that the bacteria can also penetrate into the leaves and fruit themselves so that even disinfectants don’t reach them. If you are seriously paranoid about Salmonella spp. in your diet, then you need to cook everything.

I may be cynical, but if there isn’t another major attack, then I suspect that Cheney and his people will bring one about somehow. They left enough moles in the federal bureaucracy to do something. And whatever it is, if it doesn’t kill at least 4,200 Americans and directly cost almost $1 trillion, then it won’t be as bad as the Iraq war.

But Cheney has a long history of being just nasty. Remember that he opposed the SALT talks because he badly miscalculated the Soviet Union’s intentions. Why should he be taken seriously now?

Oh, well you should look for external signs of wear and tear, of course. A TV that’s had the crap beaten out of it will probably be unreliable, too.

My usual rule of thumb is - turn it on, see if it will pick up a signal, and then check the picture. If it’s dim and you can’t make it bright enough with the dimmer knob, don’t buy it. Most TVs made in the last couple of decades should last a long time. The only exceptions are ones, like the dreaded Sony models I mentioned above, that have some reliability issue. In that case you’re screwed anyway. Other than that, I think the CRTs and the high voltage circuits are usually the first things to go. If they’re about to go, the picture is often dim, hence my selection process.

In general, if it has settings for tuning cable, it’s fairly new (less than twenty years old, IOW). That’s about the only thing I can think of that distinguishes them. Perhaps someone here remembers when they started making the 125 channel ones, but I don’t offhand. It was relatively recently, though.

I think it’s a plot between manufacturers of these insanely complicated gadgets and some organization that’s devoted to providing jobs for people who know how to make them work. A communist plot, I tell ya!

I have 2 jars of peanut butter. A creamy that I’ve never opened but was there in case… And a chunky which I bought to make peanut butter cookies for Christmas. As no one has reported getting sick eating them (myself included), I guess it’s safe. Family qua guinea pigs.
