My first reaction upon hearing that Daschle had dropped out as HHS nominee: relief. Yeah, it’s a setback and an embarrassment for Obama and all that, but it’s not my fault his vetting staff can’t do a better job than John "It’s a Google" McCain’s. I know I’m supposed to be disappointed the Republicans got this great big win, but I’m just not feeling it.
For one thing, Daschle made $2.1 million over the last two years as a not-quite-a-lobbyist "senior strategist" for a healthcare industry lobbying firm, plus another $320,000 directly from the industry itself. He would have been navigating a conflict-of-interest minefield which would either destroy his credibility or force him to recuse himself right out of the ballgame.
For another, Daschle is the walking embodiment of the Democrats’ Culture Of Fail. The Incredible Folding Man who helped facilitate Shock & Awe was supposed to be the go-to guy to push something the GOP sees as an existential threat? Daschle’s connections and schmoozing skills may be superb, but he’s the last guy I’d pick for a fight.
I was a little worried when the Republicans started making noncommittal, judgment-reserving noises about Daschle’s tax problem rather than going insincerely ballistic like they did on Holder and Geithner. I thought maybe they realized that a folding milquetoast who made millions from the healthcare industry would be the perfect opponent, but in the end they just couldn’t control themselves.
Whether this is ultimately a net positive will of course depend on who Obama picks to replace Daschle. Will the president break precedent and choose a forceful, committed and squeaky-clean progressive with a good accountant? Or will he look for another Republican senator from a state with a moderate Democratic governor who promises to appoint a Republican replacement?
Come to think of it, maybe Obama does need someone Republicans trust, someone who can persuade them to vote in favor of Americans not dying…
You laugh, but David Brooks and/or Broder will be writing a Frist-for-HHS column before the week is out.

Don’t forget part of the reason most of the Rethugs didn’t appose Daschle. He’s one of them. Meaning of the “club” called the Senate. They treat each other with kid gloves when they have confirmation hearings for new jobs(see Hillary for a great example .. Cornyn’s crap notwithstanding)
Frist would be beyond horrible. I’m not laughing.
I think it’s terrific that the republican party has gone on record being for taxes by going after Daschle for not paying his. Love it! It’s a breakthrough in the republican party! They love and honor taxes now!
I’m hoping Obama takes an approach of “If you shoot down my bill/nominee, you’ll like the next one even less.”
i think the b boys will be braying it in tomorrow’s columns.
Thanks Eli.
digg
Daschle riding around in a chauffeured lobbyist limo undermines the image he had of public servant. Particularly in the time when Wall Street fat cats and greedy bankers are openly mocking the American taxpayers, Daschle’s image problem was much worse than the particulars of his tax issue.
Lobbying taints everyone involved. Regardless of how effective he may have been in the Obama administration, Daschle chose the money and this is a fitting consequence. He can make money, it’s the American way. But if we’re going to end the revolving-door lobbying in our government it’s just not compatible. Public service or crazy money, choose one.
I’d like to see that but fluffing the GOP appears to be an obsession for Obama.
Personally, I’d nominate Bat Boy for HHS. If we can’t have Bat Boy, this would be my second choice.
If Obama would hold the previous Administration to account…I’d be more impressed…
Daschle should have come out with the gloves on and said, “F your tax attack BS, why did I get ANTHRAX sent to me…you Mofos, we’re gonna find out which one of your cronies ordered it…right Leahy????”…
I would then be impressed….now…not so much.
Yawn.
He represents as most of Obi’s picks – change we can believe in – yeah right
OT
Odierno caved. Rachel reporting that he now has a plan for troop reductions in Iraq.
Current legislation requires something like 2 years before, using Lott as an example, he could lobby Congress. That’s useless. They can be hired as consultants, do speaking tours for interested parties, all kinds of stuff, networking the whole time. After 2 years he starts his own firm. I like the choose one idea. Work in the government for 2 years, lifetime ban on lobbying.
If Daschle had that persona, he wouldn’t have lost his Senate seat.
yep, me too eli, me too. i doubt we will see that but …
Bat Boy could be good. He’s surprisingly progressive, but his lack of language skills could be a problem.
The Dems should come out with ”Why did you not solve who was trying to KILL us?????”
Geez..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFYGkNfwV6Y
But Obi has a bunch of lobbyists on board already… and he has an economic team which are the criminals who brought you there aint no asset bubble I don’t love crowd.
Yeah, what he *should* do is unfortunately not a very good predictor of what he *will* do.
I hope Obama keeps an iron fist on these perpetual warmongers … they might just beat a stupid retreat and make him look like a dufus.
ha!!!
Oops … Eli !
I’m ecstatic (and unsurprised) he fucked himself .. good riddance to another colossally ineffectual pink-tutu nest-featherer ..was too happy to kiss him goodbye in the Senate (for that kickass Harry Reid – sigh), but of course our political class are the ultimate unkillable zombies such as no b-movie screenwriter ever dreamed of.
Go back to rolling around in benjamins with your wife in your limo, asshole. Your comfort zone.
sharkbabe!
Mayhaps the WH had a little chat with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and SecDef.
You know what the talking heads would say about that, right. Oh, no, no, no, no, no one would ever do govt work if they couldn’t pimp themselves out afterwards. While that is worth thinking about seriously, I tend to think that power (i.e., congress, administration) is enough of an aphrodesiac that you will still attract talented people.
Wait…so, if my rich friend has a limousine and a driver and offers them to me, but “they” are paying…I have to pay the tax on it????? WTF???
My friend has a great pick-up truck which we like to go out and party in/from…we go places in the truck…it costs gas, and sometimes she gives cigarettes to our friend who drives us (cause that person doesn’t drink..)…
Am I now a tax scofflaw????
WTF???
I’m sure he did but Obama has to be prepared for back stabbers here … he has enough Military advisers to tell him so.
Sharkbabe!
I didn’t mourn when Daschle got voted out either, and I won’t mourn when Harry is either. If enough of them get booted, maybe someday we’ll actually get a Majority (or Minority) Leader with a spine.
Although I have a theory that the Senate Democrats have ineffectual leaders because that’s what they want. They don’t want someone who pushes them to take a stand.
Based on his appearance, I’m more than half convinced Bat Boy sprang from the loins of James Carville and Mary Matalin.
I just learned that Matalin was born and raised in Illinois, as if Blagojevich wasn’t shame enough…
Petro!
This just in from Equity California:
Wouldya like some snow, huh ?
I’ve just had two tenants tell me they won’t be able to stay at the current price…
OMG
Yeah, like….do you want your job you piece of insubordinate popcorn….? Huh???
One can probably accurately imagine what the conversations were that we will never be privy to. Of course, Odierno & Petreus will be working behind the scenes to undermine Obama. Thank goodness they’re not as skilled at that as Cheney.
WWN is way ahead of you.
Simple mistake, it turned out Petraeus and Odierno were holding their chain of command diagrams upside down.
With publicly financed elections good people would run for office knowing they don’t have to play the money game. The power junky, however, is still an ever present dilemma.
Ruh, Roh.
… the loins of … I can’t even finish the quote.
Damn you ratfood for this visual … now I can’t eat dinner ! *g*
I agree. He’s been more than fair. If they still can’t go with it, screw them.
Question is how you get incumbents to vote for it.
I have no doubt that Cheney will continue to steer his well- placed minions against Obama, in every dep’t.
Wow, spot on. Oh well, I still hope to have an original thought some day.
Anyway, I imagine the news was a greater disappointment for Bat Boy than for Carville.
While I won’t defend Daschle as Senate majority leader, I do think it’s necessary to point out that Dick Gephardt screwed Daschle over by cutting his own deal with Bush over starting the war, behind Daschle’s back. Daschle may have caved too easily, but it was Gephardt who broke what resistance there was.
LOL. By the by, I noticed Betrayus did the coin toss on Sunday. Short little fuck. Napoleon syndrome.
He needs to really kiss some ass.
Yup !
Could happen to anyone. lol
Dinner wouldn’t happen to consist of ragin’ Cajun, would it?
Jeebus … LOL
Daschle believes in the sacred institution of marriage between a man and a woman. See, if your first wife and kids begin to bore you, dump that sacred bond and move on to the next sacred blonde.
It would have to start at the state level.
Although with a super majority in the House and Senate…
It could happen (in my best Judy Tenuta voice) *g*
Something reeks of dead fish about that news story…….compare and contrast the thread earlier today about odierno’s treasonous backstabbing and what was said on Rachel’s show.
Reaction?
Please excuse me for OT but do you know a good book that would help someone who is going through chemo and radiation treatment.
Daschle just epitomized weakness. I had forgotten about him until this nomination. And then flashbacks to the worst of Democratic cringing in the face of Bush bullying. It still is mind-boggling that they replaced Daschle with Harry Reid. The two are so similarly spineless and worthless as leaders in the Public Eye.
Good point. !
What’s most telling about Obama’s nomination of Daschle is that with all these problems Daschle was nominated at all.
It’s not like Daschle was some unknown quantity to the Obama camp – Daschle was an early and one of the most significant members of the Obama campaign. Obama and Daschle were together at the Bilderberg meeting in June, for f*ck’s sake.
What Daschle’s nomination tells us is what we need to know most – that the Obama camp didn’t think that Daschle’s choices and activities were a problem.
(And while I appreciate that Obama would admit he made a mistake, talk is cheap. I didn’t want someone who said “It doesn’t matter that I’m sleeping with that other person, get over it” (that would be Bush), and the change to “I’m sorry I’m sleeping with that other person, I’m human and I make mistakes” (Obama) isn’t really change at all, it’s just the switch in relationship from violence to seduction (though that is truly the change we can believe in). What I want is someone who behaves in a way that requires no apology.)
THAT or THEY are his nemesis…not Iran..not Iraq..not Afghanistan. He has stepped into the arena with them…He is with them..or against them. It is up to him…either he is the greatest chess player ever….could be..or not…He’s got me stymied and at the same time worried…I’ve always thought..either he is the bravest American…or he’s a player. I pray the he’s the bravest. Dunno yet.
No doubt. Though it seems appropriate to bring up my “oh die already list.” Devised by my son (before he became a wingnut) and I when we had to spend a lot of time together amongst people who didn’t speak English. It was in 01, and Cheney & Ashcroft were toward the top of the list. This is a list specifically devised for lefties who wouldn’t advocate anything violent against anyone.
Oooh, oooh. I’m blond. Want to know how to become a “sacred” blond. Suspect I’m way too old for starters.
Argh. You just reminded me of something I meant to stick in the post (although I have no idea where) – that the failure was not Daschle bowing out, the failure was Daschle being nominated in the first place.
I know a lot of smart people think very highly of him as a healthcare advocate, but between the fact that he’s *already* compromised and the fact that he would bring gumdrops to a knife fight, I just don’t see how he wouldn’t do more harm than good.
It has always amazed me how many people who break their marriage vows throw around the word “sacred” with depraved abandon.
I think incumbents have a 100% majority in both houses.
The internet is like heaven. We are all young and beautiful here.
Spew!!!!!!!
How about “bar blond”…
Hmmm. I interpreted exactly the opposite. Odierno has been speaking out against withdrawing troops for awhile (he’s the guy who said the SOFA was no problema, U.S. will just disregard it). So it seems as if Obama took him to the woodshed and he became contrite.
Do you think I’m falling into the naive trap again?
This from a guy who thinks it his duty to deny marital bliss to others. What an asshole is Daschle. His kids were quite young too.
I resemble that.
Now that you mention it, I’ll scrub all the photo sites just to be sure.
Speaking of marriage, the Christian reichwingnuts in FL are working on getting a state constitutional amendment on the ballot that would make it extremely difficult to get a divorce in FL. They want to preserve the sanctity of marriage or some shit. Their major complaint is too many people are getting divorced. You can’t make this shit up.
Yeah, here’s my self portrait:
http://pregame.com/forums/blog…..osters.jpg
Heh!!!
His smarmy voice is what always makes me throw up in my mouth.
I’m talking about a majority of progressives who support public financing. *g*
roflmao
BTW, I’m not into women, but you sure are gorgeous!
I think the concept of “marital bliss” has done more harm than good. Too many enter into it thinking it will be easy.
I had hoped for something like this, just as Bush replaced Miers with Alito, but given Obama’s Richardson/Gregg swap, it doesn’t seem likely.
We might have Democratic majorities in both houses, but we’re nowhere near progressive ones.
Had Obama gone another round, he’d have replaced Gregg with Karl Rove. /s
Gad, if he follows that formula again it might actually be Frist.
I’m in Daytona. I missed that news item. The Christian reichwingnuts aka the R Party will do wahtever they can to create a distraction from the disasters they have caused.
I’m a peace advocate and activist. Nobody called me to be SoS. And I don’t have any tax problems.
Ha! I wish…!!! Heh.
It’s amazing how *both* parties always tack to the right, isn’t it.
Daschle was voted out of the Senate in the same elecion Obama was
voted in. As the Democratic Leader in the Senate Daschle had an
experienced and well connected set of aides. A number of
these aides became key members of Obama’s Senate staff.
This led to the close relationship between Obama and Daschle.
Couple more rotations and we’d have Sean Hannity.
What a mean woman she turned into.
Of course. The prospect of War Crimes makes them…constipated and gassy.
Or Rush Limbaugh.
I highly recommend The Healing Journey by Dr. Simonton and also every Book or CD by Louise Hay, who in my humble opinion, is the greatest self help teacher of the past 100 years.
I know from my background in yoga/meditation that both are very helpful in easing the negative effects of chemo.
The right is where the money is. Follow the benjamins.
Maybe Obama should just appoint Jeb to something and get it over with.
Nice enough to animals, just treats people like crap.
Ding.
Hell, he probably asked W to do something important (didn’t W ask his father & Bill to do something important?) but W turned him down, being too lazy.
LOL … that’s great !
Thank you so much. Will get those. Sorry to have gone OT.
LS, I grapple with that same ‘not knowing’ daily . . . I’ve decided I can’t do anything about it either way, so I’m trying to hold on to hope and be happy that I think I know something others don’t.
Sometimes, when it’s dark and quiet, I can’t even fool myself. *G*
Time will tell, all we can do is hope, and complain like hell when we’re mad. *G*
Darlin’, you I would never classify as “naive”. *g* Tho’, maybe? in this case. ymmv
It almost needs a time line to know which was what was said when by whom. That article spooked the spit outta me with what sounded like a very definite case of military insubordination.
If by sacred, you mean spiritually evolved, I think you’re already there … not that I’m Deepak Chopra or anything …
The Rethugs have another in the works that would require folks to go to their local election supervisors office to sign any petition to change the constitution.
I meant to use parenthesis on “marital bliss”. If American society intends to keep marriage, then it should be open to any two (or more, perhaps) humans who desire it. Daschle is a stinking hypocrite. He used the words sacred bond to describe marriage. After he dumped his first wife and kids for the beauty pageant winner/lobbyist.
I think we’d settle for Six-Pack Chopra.
I should point out I didn’t laugh when Eli suggested Frist in the post ; )
Now that eCAHN mentioned Rove, I’m no longer breathing either ; )
Isn’t that a prerequisite for a job on the Hill?
My pleasure, I’m also on Facebook, if there’s anything else I can do.
Limbaugh & Hannity?!?! You two are on an alarming roll… How ’bout I just take back what I said, so I don’t have nightmares tonight ; )
And, yes, I did intend to write the sentence that way. Why do you ask? *G*
Yeah…they were all “cozy”…”touchy feely” when W left…
Believe me…W hates that he’s POTUS…W’s family hates that he’s POTUS…Cheeeeeeney hates that he’s POTUS..(I’m sure of that, because of their history).
Right now…PBO is a moving target for these goons….OR…he’s in on the game… Time will tell.
Just wanna add that I recommend Louise Hay’s CDs to every girl/woman I meet, not just those with
terminal health issues.
She is one of the greatest people I know, and that’s saying something.
Aloha, Eli and Ya’ll! Not, Sen. ‘I can make a medical prognosis by mere videotape’ Frist…! I like Tweety’s and Marcy’s suggestion for Dr. Dean as HHS…! ;-)
Some (not I) would marvel at Obama’s chess-like moves if he appointed JEB! to a cabinet post.
Mid-life crisis without the sports car.
I knew that you would know the answer for something on how to deal with all this since it is your profession.
Just how to relax a bit would be good.
I’m sure Obama could also make room in his cabinet for O’Reilly.
Frack … and I brought a 2-4 … mutters off to Beer Store …
There was some karma that resulted. Cheney had a heart attack shortly thereafter, and Ashcroft ended up in the hospital within a year or so.
Gawd. If Frist was to be nominated…impossible…but if he was…
REVOLUTION
LOL
That’s their idea of bipartisanship an everlasting dash to the right. Sigh.
Which? To be a hypocrite or to marry a beauty queen?
I too. Then he could fire him. Can’t he fire everybody he nominates??? Or not?
Secretary of Falafel Services
-G
Oh. Dear. God. Please NOOOOO!!!!!!!!
2-4? Is that a Canadian thing?
Both.
That’s why I mentioned that Odierno had been off the Obama reservation for months, and Rachel’s report came right after the Porter article. Not dispositive, but suggestive.
The Republicans will be holding out for Torquemada.
That Obama could bond so easily with Daschle shows what an Establishment guy Obama is. He preferred a politician and lobbyist on managing healthcare as an issue to somebody with real experience or expert knowledge of the field. He wanted a middle of the roader rather than a crusader or reformer.
((( CT )))
How’s it goin’, eh ?
i posted that thought first time i saw him with chimp
“At no period in American history has our democracy been in such peril or has the possibility of totalitarianism been as real. Our way of life is over. Our profligate consumption is finished. Our children will never have the standard of living we had. And poverty and despair will sweep across the landscape like a plague. This is the bleak future. There is nothing President Obama can do to stop it. It has been decades in the making. It cannot be undone with a trillion or two trillion dollars in bailout money. Our empire is dying. Our economy has collapsed.”
The definition of a bachelor is someone who never made the same mistake once. Unfortunately, I did not learn that (would have been bachelorette in my case) until after two failed marriages.
New post—>>
Good one. Felafel, loofah, whatever. O’Reilly just wants to rub it on Andrea Makris’ tight soapy body.
You laugh. Sunday I saw a guy prolly my age in a BMW Z4 Roadster with a young woman. Doin’ 25 in the inside lane in a 45 zone, had a death grip on the wheel. What a waste of a good car.
Aloha, CTut!
Dean will not be nominated for anything in the Obama administration while Rahm still breathes.
Not surprised at all … Western Medicine is just starting to understand the power of the thought. Dr. Simonton explains it medically, much better than I could, given his expertise and experience.
How about Soliciting General?
Well, Gregg accepted, no tax problems, yet, so we may not have to go to the reductio ad absurdum.
LOL — in this case more of a panic-stricken chuckle ; )
It’s a case of 24 Beers, instead of a 6-Pack, which is only for loners. *g*
Yep, but nobody gets fired. They are asked to submit their resignation. sniff Pass the Grey Poupon.
No. It ain’t easy for most of us.
Guess if I had to choose, I’d opt for a falafel or loofah over his waddle.
My feeling exactly. I’d say it’s very disappointing, but that would imply that I expected better. It very much makes me question the seriousness of Obama’s commitment to universal healthcare that he chose such a seriously flawed advocate for it.
Now we’ll see if he fixes the error or compounds it.
Is that a suggestion? ; )
To both of you”
XXX
Guess I owe ya an old drink.
I’m betting that BO has a very sick sense of humor and wants to use a Repub to smack the others around with …
Thought you should have provided a link to Torquemada.
I’m not feeling bad about this one at all. He’s bought and paid for by the health care industry, so he was a bad pick to begin with. But he didn’t know he had to pay more than $100,000 in taxes? Um, you used to be in charge of writing the damn laws! Next!
Back when I drank, 12-packs were for loners.
Home after another day in the trenches…! ;-)
Yes we have those too. The dash confused me.
Hey you … how’ve you been ?
you liaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar,that is me
Rahmbo despises Dean that much…?
LS !
Care for a chilled Leffe ?
An addition to my “oh die already” list?
Good observation. So much for that band of rivals thing.

Moi, Toi…La Meme…Les Femmes..ruuuullllle
I don’t mind them leaving it for 2010 … it would be a nice topic for the elections, getting the Repubs to tell regular folks why they don’t deserve affordable Health Care.
Couldn’t hurt ; )
Very well, just a li’l frozen with this continuous blast of winter.
Luckly, we have Grand Marnier & Single Malt Scotch … *g*

Now I got it.
Oh, I see Waxman has called BS on that … should be interesting.
It takes a lot of work to get an ineffective stimulus package passed.
We’re currently at -12c and continuing downward with strong winds. I am really, really tired of winter.
me too,furnace blew yesstiddy,blizzard today…..fireplace real nnice
You in Canada too?
yea ,let us eat cake/shit
lina (I think) was on my case earlier today, pointing out that those with preexisting conditions were royally screwed in current system. I pointed out that there was nothing new about that, and doing it now might result in a bad bill, vs. waiting for medical economics to get even worse might result in a better bill. Still, the voices of the people suffering under the current system should be heard.
I saw that no one answered your question on Chemo & Radiation therapy. What I found is the websites for the specific cancer is a great source of information and also some of the message boards on careguide. I found the ginger for chemo nausea by just doing a google search of “chemo + nausea” and poof I found that a clinical trial is ongoing using ginger tea. The breast cancer website had the Chamomile elixir gargle for sore mouth.
Even the actual drug site can have useful information. Both the Interlukin and Sutent websites listed the side effects, things to look for and even the % of occurrence of each side effect.
My suggestion is to stay off the deep medical research papers especially from clinical trials as they are confusing AND can be very depressing.
It isn’t ineffective enough yet to pass but it will get there eventually. Oh, the joy of post-partisanship!
I’ve read that elsewhere, my humpty dance friend — why is that?
18d……snow 3 in….brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Isn’t Nancy the one who always takes everything off the table? (Seems strange for the stereotype of Italian overloaded tables.)
Central Illinois, just feels like Canada.
I thought that was a troll, but your point is correct, IMO.
Knew I could rely on you to put the snooze of the day into perspective!
She sometimes talks a good game, just never follows through. Unlike Harry, who doesn’t appear to do anything well.
Hey Eli.

Our furnace gave out a few days before Christmas. Luckily we have a Fireplace and found someone to fix it
the next day.
For one night though, we had 12 people sleeping in the Living room.
Rahm has a huge grudge over the whole 50-State Strategy, which he absolutely hated and tried to undermine or shut down. There’s a lot of bad blood there, and I’m pretty sure Rahm is the type to hold grudges.
Thanks, siri!
Having an historic house, I just luv me some fireplaces. And they have been practical in certain circumstances, just as u say.
sounds like good fun
stay warm and cuddle a lot
They appear to take turns. I think all the Dems are forced to share a single backbone, which was last checked out by Dennis Kucinich who forgot to return it.

heheheheheehehe
you on a roll
Thanks very much. This person has cancer of the tongue and now has a feeding tube so I don’t suppose he could drink or eat the ginger although I had mentioned it to him after you talked about it earlier. It
is going to be a long and difficult time for him. I appreciate your thoughtful answer.
Heh. Ds sharing a backbone. That explains everything.
Gloves! They also prevent getting bitten by mice and snakes that have nested in your woodpile.
My fav winter breaks ever were at an old Cottage on a Lake … had no insulation whatsoever but a gigantic fireplace.
So we would get a huge roaring Wood fire using Birch & Poplar and walk around (inside) in Beach Wear while watching the falling snow and Deer outside.
Katymine – also I hope that you are going well. Meant to say that in my other comment to you but I get so rattled talking about this. I think you have more strength than you ever imagined. Thumbs up !
… and make sure no one eats beans …
Thanks for the info, but this is very disturbing. It (the 50 state strategy) only led to Obama’s victory, giving him particular strength in caucus states, which were previously overlooked.
Those mice and snakes give the fire a nice aroma.
I found this website looking for the book the Petro mentioned ….
The Healing Journey Program

You’ll notice because of my tremendous respect for you I’m not talking NBA tonight.
This is Dr. Simonton’s website
I don’t know if the Princess Margaret offers the same program that he devised.

1964 was the last time a Cleveland team won anything, so I’m not getting too ballsy too soon.
A quick search of the Google says that between the Maple Leafs and the Blue Jays you’ve got me by three titles in that time, so I’ll be treading lightly.
It seems like an eternity since a Toronto team has had a winning record. The Raptors put on a half- assed effort on Sunday against the Magic. I couldn’t even bring myself to watch the game tonight.
Eli, I agree with your post 1000%!
I would add that if Daschle was the driver behind the decision to withdraw, he did Obama a huge favor. If Daschle was either a decent human being or a smart politician, he would have disclosed this tax issue to Obama and the vetting team three months ago, instead of last week. In short, Daschle’s attempt to game the process proved that he as neither decent nor smart.
Daschle betrayed Obama, both personally and in trying to subvert the high ethical standards that Obama (very likely) aspires to.
If Daschle had gone forward, (1) his hackneyed mind would have seriously screwed up the strategy for reforming health care – there are neither radical ideas nor concrete thoughts on strategy in his book, Critical; and (2) his non-existent ethics would have resulted in more than one more serious betrayals of Obama’s goals for healthcare reform long before the administration even got close to enacting a reform program.
Obama should have publicly repudiated the nomination the minute that Daschle belatedly disclosed the income tax problem, a problem that Daschle had apparently known about for at least four months before the November election.
One messaging principle that would enhance Obama’s performance greatly would be to stick to his guns on his principles for change in government. When his staff or nominees are discovered trying to deceive him about how they have violated his stated principles, Obama should reinforce his public support by asking for resignations/withdrawals. Obama should get the credit for being consistent. Particularly this is true with regard to nominees like Richardson and Daschle, both of whom apparently concealed their problems from Obama and his vetting staff.
Tom, your avarice, dishonesty, and vulgarity (who needs to have a car and driver, anyway?) have damaged our good President. Thanks a ton and good riddance.
Frist!
