Hey Suz.
It is snowing and close to 14 degrees. Just hoping that the two inches we will get tonight will cover up old ugly snow (uh, like a foot of horrible curb snow).
They need to make sure there is no wiggle room…… that the CEO can’t make the janitor staff the execs and label themselves the janitor staff getting paid billions with big bonus & stock options……
Oh I am sure that there will be over site… unlike our former dear leader… he didn’t know what over site is. Except maybe looking over the edge of a cliff!
Laugh-In was very specific to that time and opened up television to a lot, instead of the uptight Mrs Cleaver and Father knows best type shows…… It also launched so many comedians just as SNL did later on.
Hm, a new media format that breaks the longstanding mainstream control over the content that gets disseminated over that medium… huh, no wonder we internutters liked it!
I’m trying not to feel broken.
Sometimes it seems the forces are so much bigger than me.
Our Wa. state senate voice-voted to applaud Israel’s Democracy, interest in Human Rights and support of the New War on Terror on Jan. 21, 2009. Resolution 8602 3008-10. wa.gov.
The senate leaders{dems} say it’s no big deal…like any of their Resolutions. Just a thing they all do, like supporting the Post Office or whatever.
I say Resolution 8602 2001-02 supporting Martin Luther King was less horrific.
But our senate thinks these Resolutions don’t matter. Even though 8602 2009-10 was sent to the Israel Knessett. Something our state officials were unaware of until I pointed it out as a citizen. Oh,well.
Tomorrow I call the majority floor leader-person, Lisa Brown, and see what we can do to ubdo this.
“Sometimes I fell like a motherless child..”.
I still remember the night I was watching Laugh In and, without warning, Richard Nixon appeared on camera and said, “Sock it to me?”
I think that was when he was running for president in 1968 and it seemed out of character for him to appear on a comedy show. On the other hand, he had made a political career out of playing the victim, so it seemed kind of fitting in that sense…
Groucho said the teevee lafftrack would destroy comedy in America. The jury’s still out. I loved Laugh-In but it sucked. We didn’t say sucked back then.
mine too. My maternal grandma, Helen Gunderson, was born in Norway. She would sometimes cry during the program, and start speaking softly in Norwegian. She’d keep watching, though.
Laugh In was ruined for me for two reasons. The first episode I watched was right after I found out a close friend in the Army had been killed outside of Can Tho. Second reason – my first wife’s weird, somewhat dysfunctioal family LOVED IT. The program lasted about 2X as long as my first marriage.
Judy Carne was often tricked into saying “Sock it to me”, which led to her being doused with water or otherwise assaulted. “Sock it to me” also became a catchphrase. During the September 16, 1968 episode, Richard Nixon, running for president, appeared for a few seconds with a disbelieving vocal inflection, asking “Sock it to me?” Nixon was not doused or assaulted. An invitation was extended to Nixon’s opponent, Vice-President Hubert Humphrey, but he declined. According to George Schlatter, the show’s creator, “Humphrey later said that not doing it may have cost him the election.”
Growing up my artistic/academic parents refused to have TV n the house.
So we had a family date to do dinner with our friends every week for Laugh-in and This Was the Week That Was.
During the the Leave it to Beaver/I Love Lucy era, so much squawking about censorship. Married couples having to occupy twin beds, etc.
Pro-censorship folks made so much noise, all the kids started asking questions. Idiots. Like the McCarthy hearings. Still remember my parents trying to explain that..
It’s pretty fun to go through the Way Back Machine sometimes. We were watching old episodes of Get Smart and the production was sooooo simple (my kids would say “lame”) compared to now. The phones you dial, the pinch pleat curtains, the stick furniture. Really spare. We watched Laugh In after that and again, the production was like a huge stage with very very simple props.
Seeing Sammy Davis Jr in the shorts reminded me that the R&M show featured a thing called “The Flying Fickle of Fate.” That reminded me that Sammy was in the BW Musical from which R&M stole that term – “fickle finger of fate.” “Sweet Charity.” Here’s Sammy in Rhythm of Life from the movie.
Thank you. Whenever I feel this beat down, I do feel beat down…..I just want to either lay down or get up and kick some ass.
Guess lay down is not an option…!
Look that up in your F&W was a stock line that Dick Martin would say whenever Rowan gave him a story with a long word in it or whatever. Now we have to sock it to you.
Flip? No, I’m thinking of Pryor’s network show (late 70s?) being cancelled over censorship disputes. My recollection is that he and Lily collaborated. They were boils on mainstream asses.
thinking back, i think laugh in was the only teevee show that my whole family agreed to watch. we had a system for hard choices (i.e., sun nite was contentious faced with watching either ed sullivan show or the fbi so we alternated each week) but i don’t remember anyone ever saying they wanted to watch something else.
my dad liked goldie and her bikini and his vote was equal to the rest of the family.
I just wish there was a sanity break. Cripes!! The whole world was taking a breath on Jan 21, but not our Dem majority senate. THEY were busy caving to to the ultra-right in a voice vote to recognize the legality of War Crimes!! FUCK!!!
Now they say that may have been a mstake, maybe there should be a new Resolution.
Okay. Let’s do that. What would the new Resolution say to the victims in Palestine? Or do they recognize the extent of their faux pas???
FUCK!! If I wasn’t a homeschool mom I would never have the time to hold our officials accountable. But I am. And I do. It’s actually a WEIRD status. How many of you have the cell phone numbers of your elected officials? I do. And their staffers recognize my voice, and I very much like their staffers.
No matter what you hear about “homeschool”, never under estimate the power of hands-on civic duty training. In our world the Constitution is a Living Document. We are involved as a family in civic issues.
Which is exhausting.
Hi, guys. Showing our age tonight, are we?
Y’all have covered about everything I remember best about Laugh-In, but you know, during that sketch where Ruth Buzzi and Joanne Worley kept breaking up, I kept noticing Ruth’s dress, and thinking, “Damn, did I really wear dresses like that?” And answering, oh, yes, I did. Even shorter and with even weirder prints.
Suzanne – since you’re diving I guess your horrible cold has finally gone? Glad to hear it.
Wow. How old-fashioned – one teevee for the whole family????
Sometimes I think that was very educational = having to make those negotiations with the rest of the family. Now everyone has their own tv – kids, parents – and get their own way all the time (as to what to watch).
Not necessarily a good thing in the long run.
LOL! I worked in low-level office jobs in those days – I remember stooping to the bottom file drawer verrrry carefully. Pants to work weren’t really an option at the time.
Too true!
Thanks for the laughs and nostalgia trip – hadn’t seen any Laugh-in for a long time. How is it that I remember all the cast members name instantly upon seeing them?
Oh, well. Time for this elderly teevee viewer to call it a night. Thanks, Suzanne.
Well, the kids are now 20 and 18. Which means nothing they do can come back on their father and I legally. They’re healthy, thriving and have “preferred member” status on their credit cards.
We are out of the woods. And have a very close relationship. With their freinds, as well. Which doesn’t mean we are in complete agreement in every aspect of their new “adult” choices. Just that we can still have conversations about life. And their responsibilities to their own futures.
Sweet dreams. Thanks for a fun night. I was laughing out loud,my son wanted to know why……………..
Laughter is the best medicine! Not to discount Knowledge. Just not so giggly fun as LOL.
Well, one could say good job. However, I spent a day 2 weeks ago,
where I traveled down to ” the big city” to protest the horrible destruction of Gaza with the youngbloods driving. The youngbloods were outraged after I alerted them, but I was actually the informed citizen saying,”We should do this” They agreed.
So we got pulled over twice by very nice, very young cops. Nothing like traveling with a couple of mohawks to bring out the police action!!! Shit.
When you hear talk of police profiling…..try traveling with a couple of mohawks!!!!!
I felt so old, the “mum” in the back seat of the sporty red car…….
suz!
Hey Suz. How’s that flu?

Looks like they just might have to hand out Crying Towels at the announcement tomorrow…. OOhh I can’t wait to see the fallout!!
ooooooh, time to grab the popcorn
this is gonna be fun (but watch out for exploding corporate heads – i hear their remnants are toxic to the environment)
Laugh-In sucked.
One layer of fleece, one silk scarf (always) and a “nice” pin of gold or silver…or maybe an artist’s creation. Extra socks and moc slippers…
sorry – can’t please all the people all the time yanno
They need to make sure there is no wiggle room…… that the CEO can’t make the janitor staff the execs and label themselves the janitor staff getting paid billions with big bonus & stock options……

Thanks Suzanne,
Who knows what is popular? I can’t help but think about Northern Exposure.
Hey! You’ll take my Arte Johnson when you pry it from my cold, dead hands!
Oh I am sure that there will be over site… unlike our former dear leader… he didn’t know what over site is. Except maybe looking over the edge of a cliff!
Laugh-In was very specific to that time and opened up television to a lot, instead of the uptight Mrs Cleaver and Father knows best type shows…… It also launched so many comedians just as SNL did later on.
but but do you “Remember Mama”??
Ladies and gentlemen, Miss Lily Tomlin.
between laughin and the smothers brothers, television changed huge.
both were constantly pushing the censors envelopes
Well here is a link to Mama
i remember mama
Well kids….. just ate my handful of chocolate covered ginger and head off to sleep…..
Hm, a new media format that breaks the longstanding mainstream control over the content that gets disseminated over that medium… huh, no wonder we internutters liked it!

tw3 was a great show but it was not a comedy
I’m trying not to feel broken.
Sometimes it seems the forces are so much bigger than me.

Was at our also. we all sat on the floor and watched on the B&W TV.
I can remember watching Laughin as a teenager and my father adored Goldie Hawn so we never missed a week.
btw I am reading Nixonland by Rick Perlstein. It brings back a lot of memories as well as shedding light on some things I did not know.
don’t give up hope openhope. we all get down, ya just gotta get back up and fight some more
is what we all gotta do
man, I hate typos. Sorry.
Groucho said the teevee lafftrack would destroy comedy in America. The jury’s still out. I loved Laugh-In but it sucked. We didn’t say sucked back then.
sometimes the way to reach those whom can not (or will not) listen to serious talk about serious things is to use comedy.
i think that was the true genius of laugh in
Damn those House marathons……. and the nice folks here …… need to get off the sofa and turn off the computer…… need a push….. ok ok I’m going….

It never ends. There is always more work to do. That’s just our lot in this life. At least we have one another for fun and strength.
thanks! where is that quote from?
I can still remember the song for Laugh In Looks at the News. doodley atta doodley atta doot doot doo!
sorry I didn’t link. from the wiki~
I would hate to think that made the difference, but on the other hand the election was very close…
Growing up my artistic/academic parents refused to have TV n the house.
So we had a family date to do dinner with our friends every week for Laugh-in and This Was the Week That Was.
Rest easy in knowing that you have made a difference, openhope. That’s more than most people can ever say in a lifetime. ((openhope))
I just checked the index in Perlstein’s book and did not see Laugh In listed in the index. A significant omission, in my opinion.
Hey Suz hippies aren’t main stream, they never have been and never will! They all just dance to a different drummer.

I’ve got mixed feelings about Sweet Charity, but there are a few really good songs. Big Spender, Rhythm of Life, where am I Going…
Whole world full o’ deserving asses to kick in the morning!
‘Fair’? Sir, we don’t have to be fair. We’re the phone company.
That wasn’t in the clip! Genius. She and Pryor got canned, we got screwed. I stopped watching teevee when they went off.

Hate to correct you, but the devil made me do it!
look it up in your funk and wagnall was a tagline on the show

Look that up in your F&W was a stock line that Dick Martin would say whenever Rowan gave him a story with a long word in it or whatever. Now we have to sock it to you.
… and that’s the truth.
Thx, I’ve always been a contemporary culture dolt. Pitiful.

glory days. well, that’s it for me. say good night, dick!
hell, it was 40 forking years ago – i’m surprised i remember as much of it as i do
Flip? No, I’m thinking of Pryor’s network show (late 70s?) being cancelled over censorship disputes. My recollection is that he and Lily collaborated. They were boils on mainstream asses.
g’nite dick
You can use another of Dick’s lines.
nite!
not only that, but Lily Tomlin bridged the gap, she appeared as a guest host on SNL more than once
Perfect. thx

i like to think of late late nite as our sanity break. sometimes ya just gotta laugh or else ya do cry
i know i had dresses shorter than hers and i was thinking the same thing. every time she sat down (laughing)
so far so good. my neighbor downstairs is on antibiotics – turned into a bad case of bronchitis.
Wow. How old-fashioned – one teevee for the whole family????

but, we always watch the batman.
Laughter is the BEST medicine. Oh, yeah!!!
errr.. the batman show. its been a long day.
I respect what you’re doing enormously. Home schooling done right is a huge job and must be exhausting. How many years have you been doing it?
Well, the kids are now 20 and 18. Which means nothing they do can come back on their father and I legally. They’re healthy, thriving and have “preferred member” status on their credit cards.
