Start with an anti-government, anti-regulation attitude in the Bush White House, then add eight years of shrinking the number of federal regulators, and here’s what you get (courtesy of Steve Vogel at the Washington Post):
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, charged with enforcing the nation’s job discrimination laws, is facing its largest caseload in at least a quarter-century with sharply diminished staffing and resources, according to commission and union officials. . . .
More than 95,400 charges of job bias in the private sector were filed in fiscal year 2008, up 15.2 percent from the previous year and up 26 percent from 2006. But the size of the EEOC staff, which is responsible for investigating the complaints, has steadily decreased in size and now numbers 2,192, down from approximately 2,850 in 2000.
File that under "No one could have anticipated . . ."
If the Congress is anxious to spend some stimulus money in ways that directly create jobs and have an immediate impact, increasing the funding to get rid of this backlog at the EEOC and similar government backlogs at the SEC, FDA, and the USDA’s food safety inspection service would be a big step in the right direction. Then there’s the immigration/naturalization paperwork processing, military transitioning from DOD to VA health benefits, . . .
Yes, the GOP will scream about making government bigger, so make the positions temporary, until the caseload matches the targets (the 180 days in the story above). But all this is right up Obama’s alley. Remember this from his inaugural address?
The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works — whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. . . . Those of us who manage the public’s dollars will be held to account to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.
Spend the money wisely and reform bad habits so that government can work. What a novel idea.

And now Obama has appointed/nominated Sen. Gredd who voted to abolish the Dept. of Commerce twice (reported by Matthews).
What position is the nomination – Sec of Commerce Dept of course.
Could that with some pay to play to ensure a Republican is appointed and some other winner votes like against 13 million for vets mental health care.
You have shown clearly that there is a job market for people to fill these roles in a government that the gop’s say is too large. What kind of jobs did the idiot dog boy and shooter show implement? They spent more than any government in history, and even though the percentage of bribery may not be as great as past administrations, the billions or trillions of dollars reaped, is.
The hypocrisy of the wingnuts….. whine and scream that welfare queens keep having babies to stay on welfare and get more money BUT when funding is put in a bill for Medicaid Contraception health care then they scream about that……
Low income women have a higher incident of high risk pregnancies…… they work long hours, a lot on their feet 10-12 hours. What a novel concept but how about giving these women the choice to plan their families……
Employment is created with adding doctors, nurse practitioners and nurses. Low income women are kept in the workforce (saving jobs) and there is reduced Medicaid expenses with caring avoiding high risk mothers and babies……
BUT hypocrisy is ok….. after all they scream about raising Medicaid costs, increasing numbers on welfare and where is that maid to clean my hotel room?
The lasting legacy of the Bush years (or at least one of the many legacies) will be:
And the answer will usually be:
When Hillary Clinton walked in the doors of the State Department on the morning after her swearing in, she was greeted with cheers by the career staff and it was televised live on at least a couple of the cable networks.
Other Obama appointees may not have had the applause and cameras, but they too have been greeted with sighs of relief by the folks who DID anticipate [fill in the blank] as a part of their jobs, only to have their expertise ignored because it didn’t fit the political agenda of the folks at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
There isn’t an agency in the government that GWB hasn’t managed to nearly destroy under his rapefest in DeeCee.
Yeah, they scream about killin’ the bebbies…but they have no problem starving them and keeping them from having medical care and edjikayshun.
I did this diary back in December when the WaPo0 was about half way through the review of the various Federal Agencies and the troubles facing them.
I would hope the career staff who actually do the work and believe in Government Service in the various agencies are all standing and cheering that they are now dealing with folks who will not denigrate their efforts and will support them moving forward.
Peterr,
so nice to see you posting. .)
It is going to be necessary to out all of Bush’s el destructo minions that have managed to burrow in
The mere existance of the Republican Party proves that there’s a lot more horses asses than there are horses…
and that’s the truth.
LOL
I think they will do a fine job of outing themselves. With proper supervision, however, they will be nowhere near as destructive as they have been in the past. “No, I will NOT sign off on that proposed regulation. I don’t care what your old boss said back in 2008.”
More “fine” examples of your government at work. How long will we need for significant improvement? Who knows, I guess.
From the friends, family members, and others I know who work for (or with) various federal agencies, there is a great deal of relief at having new bosses at the political levels — especially in science-based positions (Interior, Energy, EPA, NIH, CDC, etc.).
Is it possible that POB is lining up a bunch of people (by appointing them) that he can then fire at will as time goes on; thereby ridding us of them…
That sounds nuts…I know…just wishful thinking…
They are everywhere, the FAA supervisors who attempt to discipline inspectors doing their job, OSHA inspectors who have ceased inspecting, It will be a chore and take a while.
That is good news.

One distant relative who works in State told me in August that they could not wait for a new leader and new direction.
A group of them had just returned from Iraq and were saddened at the carnage wrought in the name of America and freedom.
man, it gets scarier and scarier, how many generations will pay the bills from the bush administration
Assuming the Republic lasts (which is a big assumption in itself), probably as many generations as the Republic has been in existence to date.
I thought the rethugs support the concept of employment discrimination, not merely the concept that there should be less regulation of employers. I can think several rethugs in my acquaintance who affirm the “fundamental right” of employers to employ whomever they want, under whatever terms they want.
Now that they’ve burrowed as career service employees they have to do as they’re told. Give them tasks that entail going against their ideology. They either do a proper job or ignore it/do a lousy job and pay the consequences. Either insubordination or a couple unsat performance evals and it’s buh-bye. Normally ya usually have to kill somebody to get fired from the govt but that doesn’t apply if the agency doesn’t want ya to begin with.

That one hand you year clappin behind the one parched voice you hear cheein’ is the last honest public servant leanin on her crutch swingin on her missin leg.

If you ever really wanted to comprehend how the global economy came to this point, and how everything REALLY works, you must listen to this lecture:
THE GLOBAL FINANCIAL CRISIS
The Great Depression of the 21st Century
with Michel Chossudovsky

How are you doing Norske ?
there really should be a personal liability clause in the exercise of presidential authority… we should be able to withhold a portion of his future earnings, take his homes and turn them into museums, put a liens on his daughters’ trust funds, etc, etc.
This was one of the things that I tried to document in my scandals list.
First, put someone to head an agency who is fundamentally opposed to its core mission.
Second, cut funds and staff.
Third, pass rules that weaken the core mission as much as possible
You can see this pattern in virtually every bureau, agency, and department in the government.
Unintended consequences usually aren’t unintended.
Sooner or later, President Obama must realize that he is going to have to draw the line on creeping Wingnutism and just say “no” to their unreasonable demands.
He famously said, “I won.” Now he needs to follow up: “…and therefore…”
certainly not the 2nd, 3rd, 4th,…. nth time.
that smarts
The DOJ hired back one of the fired attorneys from the AGAG era, so maybe there’s a possibility that you could get your wish.
At the very least, I’d love to see some “Where are they now?” stories about these folks who were voices in the wilderness.
yup, the entire purpose was to destroy our government
I have said from the start, if a novel were written with the decisions of this president, that novel would have been dismissed as trash, that the american public would allow a man so clearly determined to destroy this country would not be removed from office
there’s a chance (although probably small) that i could get some info from eric – i know someone in his family a little bit.
Here is a story that suggests that there may be bushies who have burrowed in that are deliberately trying to sabotage Obama

A question for the legal experts on this blog.
Would it be possible to investigate the banks and AIG for violations of the SOX and money laundering legislation? If they can’t assess the extent of their toxic assets, what has happened to due diligence, and transparency? A lot of legal jobs could be created.
Since we already have given TARP money; would the taxpayer be paying again for the same debt if aid is given to homeowners?
I’m all for helping individuals, but I want to be sure that we as taxpayers are not giving money to the banks twice for the same thing.
How are the banks applying the TARP money to assist homeowners?
“yup, the entire purpose was to destroy our government”
In most historical contexts such intent would have been deemed treasonous, methinks.
If you do get a positive answer from him, drop a note to Jane or put a comment in the threads.
A little confused here. Ian just had a nice post which disappeared and now “Never say die” Coleman is up again.
DUGG better late than not digging pups!
Left ya a Comment Neuro!
Great post Peterr!!! ya know, this is all ringing familiar, though it’s on a magnitude as of yet imagined. i remember when i was working for the feds during Carter’s administration, enter the GREAT now dead guy, and tons of us were RIF’d. It was suckage and remained suckage until Clinton got in and I returned on temp contract, eventually to be rehired and had a permanent stable job again.
My bad, I pulled it back for Coleman since Coleman has breaking news in it. I’ll put mine back up this evening.
My idea of a stimulus AND revamping of the entire financial system of the United States AND each individual state is elucidated in A Radical Plan for Funding a New Deal.
Read it, demand it, live it.
When do progressives wake up and smell the coffee? Tonight Obama’s interview with perky Katie Couric was a disaster. The corporate media has framed the debate and Obama looked rather weak. Who is really surprised? When do progressives realize that what is needed is a new party that is willing to take on entrenched interests? Don’t count on Obama to take on the plutocrats head on.
That’s “Senator Coleman”. Are you so naive to think the Republicans will ever concede defeat?
Texas Repukes pushing to rename a court house after him!! WTF after how Bush ignored the LAW. Just who does he think he is?? Maybe they should wait to see if he gets convicted of War Crimes.
It’s in the same spirit as naming a DC airport after the guy who fired the air traffic controllers.
As only Repukes love to do! How ironic two assholes getting things named for them that they did the most to destroy!
man, if I were obama I would really declare war on that type of crap, first thing I would do is UN name the hoover dam, and then begin to educate everyone for all the damage reagan did to this country
what we see today in this economy started with reagan and festered, what we see today is the boil not the disease, the disease was and is reagan’s depraved redistribution of middle class assets to the wealthiest people on the planet
