As a member of a family blessed with a bird-name, it’s likely birding is in my blood. My grandpa was a birder, and so was Dad. I’m a more casual birder, being a city dweller. My sister-in-law is pretty serious about it, having acquired her name in marriage — converts tend to be more rigorous, right?
So when I see a new bird name pop up as frequently as this Superb Owl has in my email, and on the internets, this week, I tend to want to find out what it is. And I’ve had a devil of a time. There are Horned Owls, Striped Owls, and Great Horned Owls.
I’ve discovered, in my research, as mentions of this Superb Owl rocketed upwards, that there are Barn Owls and Barred Owls, Boreal Owls and Screech Owls. Two Owls are Great: the Gray and the Horned.
But no Superb can I find.
There’s owls with ears, both Short- and Long-. There’s two Northern Owls, the Hawk and the Saw-whet. There’s an Eastern Owl, too: the Screech. Of Screech Owls, there are Western, Balsas, Pacific, Oaxaca, Whiskered and Spotted. There’s Screech Owls that are Tropical, Peruvian, Bare-Shanked, Bearded, Columbian, and Rufescent.
There’s even an all-white Owl, the Snowy.
But I cannot find this Superb Owl.
There are Sooty Owls, both Greater and Lesser. There’s lots of Masked Owls: the Taliabu, Minihassa, Sula Island, Lesser, New Britain, Australian, Tasmanian, and Sulawesi. Enough Masked Owls for a masquerade ball! But no Superb Owl.
There’s a Laughing Owl and a Fearful Owl; a Barking Owl and a Winking Owl. Even a Powerful Owl!
There are Little Owls, and Owlets. Pygmy Owls and Elf Owls. Crested Owls, Maned Owls, and Mottled Owls. Even an Unspotted Owl!
But this Superb Owl eludes me.

NEVER MIND! :-p
hahahahaha took me a minute to get it teddy
very well played dood
I hate the Steelers.
Heh. Indeed.
Teddy!
But it was a tremendous game, very tight finish – if it wasn’t SF, all you can hope for is a real contest.
And I did not hear one peep about God being in the mix.
Happy day.
Eludes me too. *Good fun article.*
Ditto, ThatGuy! It was a good game tho…! ;-)
Aloha, Suz! And, newt and…! *g*
Honestly do not understand all this fuss over a silly bird at all. Been all over my TV, the intertubes, and everywhere.
Hey cTut!
Good day in FLA.
Oh, Teddy, you are such a charmer! Love this.
So I have a real bird question. I thought I saw an acorn woodpecker today. I didn’t have binoculars but after I saw it on a tree trunk it flew onto a branch and sat there while I noted it’s features. When I got back the house, I looked it up, and that’s the only woodpecker that’s close to what I saw. Only trouble is, it’s a western bird and I’m in the east. Any bird experts around to advise?
A pretty difficult needle to thread, this post, Teddy. Well done.
haven’t had my tv on – sounds like i missed one heck of a bird.
Learned A LOT about owls writing this one, I’ll tell you that.
Hello.
The last minute of that game sure was amazing! I never understand why it lasts 20 minutes, though. (Superb Owl exemption for THIS thread tonight….)
I hear the Superb Owl has a penchant for roasted Cardinal.
Aww, CE, such flattery will get ya everywhere…! ;-)
heard from es today.
he slipped and fell, breaking his left arm. he has an appt tuesday with an orthopedic surgeon.
he could use some warm, healing postive thoughts – still no power at his place. he is staying at a temporary location for the time being.
You’re in Florida? For the game?
i was rooting for the steelers only because of mean joe green – i still love that coke commercial.
What is this Superb Owl?!
In spirit only. When my guys aren’t involved, I just hope it’s not a horrendous blowout.
ouch
That totally bites Suz! (((ES))) I hope ya heal fast…! *g*
Probably a downy woodpecker, which looks very similar.
Damn!
(((ES)))
Oh, dear. How do we contact him?
I like Joe Namath.
Let’s not forget the elusive burrowing owl.
That looks a lot like a woodpecker I’ve seen on a couple occasions here in Central Illinois. Perhaps he was in transit to your neck of the woods?
I’ve had a lot of birds drop into my backyard for refueling that were out of their documented territory. Don’t know how to explain it except that loss of habitat might be messing with their traditional migration patterns.
I love owls — they are so mysterious. But, heh heh…
i can’t believe ES is missing teddy’s superb owl exception tonight.
the last 2:30 of the game had me screaming and yelling so much i scared token away from his food dish – poor little guy thought he did something wrong.
Who’s winning, and why isn’t it over already?
Ouch! One of my colleagues took a header on the ice here over break and broke his leg in two places.
Damn, sorry to hear that. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, ES.
he said he may try to show up in the comments tonight – but it is dayam hard to type one handed
ES!! ((Hugs)) Talk to Suz about broken bones, she is an expert in recovering from orthopedic stuff.
I suspect Joe has graduated to control-top pantyhose by now…
Obviously a Bush appointee.
Ended an hour ago.
Steelers (AFC owls) won.
Definitely not a downy, which had striped wings. This one had solid black wings. It was also larger than a downy. I’m very familiar with downies, so if it had been that, I’d have recognized it. It was a bird I’d never seen before. I also chased a woodpecker off of one of my wooden shutters last week. I didn’t get a good look, but it was larger than a downy & smaller than a pileated, and might have had black wings.
Probably a full girdle.
Suzanne, that is terrible! I’ve been thinking about all the people without power, in the cold. Best to es.
I think Joe Namath liked working his way through the crowd, with all of them trying to touch his ball.
I sent an email to the Cornell site I linked to, so we’ll see if they respond. Interesting that you have seen a similar bird in central IL.
LOL
I imagine so.
I went to my local pizza joint tonight to have a pint and finish editing a document I’m working on – and there in the lounge they had the Superb Owl on – and I surprised myself by enjoying it. I have generally no interest in sports, live without a TV, and haven’t seen a game in year. But I have to admit that in spite of being American football, it was pretty dams good.
Rural electric always takes longer to get power restored as well. Hope he is well set where he is.
Hairy woodpecker is like a big twin to the downy; was it one of those?
Hey, where’s the love?
Dude is royalty in those circles, pantyhose, fir coats, a little drunk on camera at times, or otherwise. :-)
Nope. Both hairy & downy have striped wings.
too bad you did not get a picture of it ecahn
I’d be interested to hear what you find out.
One of the most unexpected and beautiful birds that has dropped by was a rose-breasted grosbeak that stayed for a couple weeks about 3 years back. I don’t think we were really out of their normal range but I don’t think they venture into towns very often. First one I had seen anyway.
The Sioux believe that when an owl hangs around a place that it is a precursor of someone dying.
Heh, ES is one Southern Country boy that will survive…! No matter what… *g*
I didn’t have either a camera or binoculars with. I was planning on walking across the river, as the temp has been below freezing for long enough to make the ice solid, but still didn’t want to take stuff with, just in case. However, I had a large poker with and kept testing the ice in front of me. At one point it went thru, so I changed my plans and just walked along the edge instead.
I can’t figure out who es is.
Oh, I have had one or two rose-breasted grosbeaks on my feeder. A rare and beautiful sight.
in that case, its a good thing you brought the poker instead
eureka springs, host of late late nite (he and i share the honors)
Many cultures I’ve experienced have portended an owl as a good omen…
The ice was still about an inch thick and probably would have held, but I’m alone and I don’t take changes like that. Oh, and the river’s only about 3-4 feet deep where I was crossing, but still …
That is a common belief among many tribes. Among Southeastern tribes it is the whippoorwill. For them owls hooting outside your house for several nights or several of them at once means witches are after you.
BTW, are you well? I hope you have recovered.
I actually caught a glimpse of a giant freaking Barn owl that lives at my Aunt and Uncles place on my Birthday.
Way cool.
As Suz states… ES is our frequent Late, late host and astute commenter too…! *g*
i’ve always associated death and birds with ravens
today was the first day that i was able to eat and not get queasy at all (happy dance)
I bought an artificial owl to hang on my back porch so the barn swallows wouldn’t build a nest there.
Thanks. He’s a good guy. Get Well Soon, ES.
Yay!!! (((Suzanne)))
A common European association. Many tribes also associate ravens with death, as well. For the Cherokees, the chief war priest, whose job it is to magically kill their enemies, is called the Raven.
A veritable ’scarecrow’, eh? ;-)
Scareswallow, more like it.
January 29th was the 164th anniversary of the first publication of Poe’s “The Raven.” Almost posted a comment about it at the time but you know I’m not one to venture off topic…:-)
Off to sleep. Gnite all.
Many people in SF have owl mannequins at the peak of their roofs, probably to scare pigeons (futilely, I’m quite sure)
Night.
g’nite, eCAHN
From what I have read and heard, they do not seem terribly effective at that task.
No topic is off-topic this late, rattie.
Among other things, doesn’t SF have flocks of wild parrots now?
No digg love for the Superb Owl?
;~(
Best wishes to Eureka Springs.
Who gives a hoot about owls? Who? Who?
Aloha, eCAHN!
g’nite ecahn
The late Stiller announcer Myron Cope developed a hybrid Terra Built Owl (which he rhymed with ‘vile’ sounding like ‘vowel’).
The Digg it be open.
dugg and thanks to ratfood for opening the digg
Yes! And parakeets, too. Along Dolores Street, in the palm trees, there are many flocks of escaped parakeets that have gone feral, bred, and made homes. But there is a movie about the Parrots of Telegraph Hill, as well. They were endangered recently when a landowner sought to remove a tree that had grown into his view (much prized in that neighborhood, as you can imagine).
But I think the parrots, or their lawyerly fans, won the day in court and kept the tree intact.
I do too, but I can’t let my little doggie out by herself at night because we have the barn owl here.
Yes. Hard to do much of anything one handed.
Suzanne, what made you unwell? I missed that adventure. Glad you are feeling better!
I usually can’t hear the owls for the coyotes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xx7lBVd5Ufo
I read about the parrots and then saw the film. How wonderful.
i think you remember correctly teddy – the birds won with overwhelming public support
Good for you! You’re a good sport.
Yay, parrots!
Oh, no! That is pretty scary.
had a bug i was fighting for several days – if i had come down with it, i probably wudda only been sick for one day and not feeling queasy for 4
Beats cougars, which we occasionally get in neighborhoods on the edge of town. A colleague had a cougar take down a deer in her backyard a few years ago. She lives across the street from an elementary school.
I’m sure you’ve gotten word by now, but es is Eureka Springs. A fantastic part of our late night line-up!
In the Pets & Animals category! Superb indeed.
I love finding otherwise appropriate Digg categories for FDL posts. I try to post all the Rush threads in Celebrities.
My little Badger didn’t like to ride in the convertible we used to have up near Bodega Bay for the same reason, like Tippy Hedren.
Do they have categories for toxic waste, garbage, or sewage?
That would have been pretty exciting. I prefer to see my nature documentaries on TV. I have to chase hawks away from my bird feeders, though. Sometimes I find a spot in the backyard where it looks like a dove exploded and know I missed one.
I’m out, have a splendid evening everyone.
Super Bowl Owl…the watch bird watching football
Black bears are a pretty common nuisance (get into trash cans) in those neighborhoods. Even had a couple darted by animal control a couple of blocks from me in the past four years and I live in the middle of town.
Not the Comic threads as KO assigns him as…? ;-) “Comedian Rush…” *g*
i like my nature viewing via my living room window
g’nite ratfood
Check out http://identify.whatbird.com/o…..ecker.aspx
On the left-hand side of the page it has “related birds” and perhaps you’ll see the bird.
Aloha, ratfood!
Night, rf.
teddy, what kinda animal was your badger?
I need to head out as well. Take care all.
g’nite dr (pause) dick
Aloha, Dr. D…!
Badger is the fiance’s name of nick.
and nick is… a small dog?
Actually, until the 4th q, it was a screwup game. Refs were horrible, too.
Glad the Cards at least made a game of it. I was worried when they scored with 2:35 left. Too much time for a good team. Oh well.
The Steelers STILL trail the Niners by a half game in Super bowl standings. 5-0 > 6-1. :-D
Yes, I take great pride at that shiny “0″ at the end.
great post, teddy! I would gladly watch owls of any type, any day or night. Bowls, not so much.
OT — Can’t help it, laughing my ass off at HBO’s Flight of the Conchords.
me too… i was torn between wanting the steelers to lose so they did not get 6 and my mean joe green love for the steelers
I’m with you — just give me owls and hightlights of SB commercials.
I’ll come in again…. Badger is Patrick’s nickname.
Nice site…Teddy a thoughtfully pleasant break from hardcore politic. Much appreciated to hear talk about the wonders of nature. On my daily row I met up with harbor seals and otters while flocks of ducks and geese gagle in conversation…much like we do here, Hunting season is about over. The birds are spooky except the seagulls who get feed a lot. Every area has their wildlife. Blackjack, my buddy fo almost 15 years loved riding in the row boat and the seal pups liked to check him out…me not so much, The birds of the bay really make the place. Nice post. We have some Perigrine falcons…the fastest bird alive and occassional Osprey that like to mast sit. Lots of Turkey vultures. When the spotted owls were listed I lost my house…but then there are other places maybe better. Owls are great at keeping the mice and rats from overunning us.
Good post more like this I would not mind a bit. Can you do one on snakes…owls think they are delicious and their are a lot of them.
Yes, the alternative post was about bowels. Somehow, it didn’t have the charm of owls. But there were some fun places to go….
never mind
I liked the young coach’s interview with Olbermann, so if I was rooting for any owls, it was the superb steel owls.
yes, commercial highlights are good. I just don’t have the patience to sit through all the other stuff that surrounds the actual commercials.
The museum had a Canada goose problem in the front lagoon, one that meant too many were landing there in the water (too much guano on the walking paths). It was a real problem. He floated plastic “dead goose” decoys in the lagoon, and they took off. It was creepy, but it worked.
My bird story.
said, of course, in my best emily
well, certainly bowels could be very appropriate for anything about the Rethugs, and this is a (mostly) political blog.
stephanie (baby girl) had a summer with the job corp in our town in ca and spent 6 weeks cleaning the guano off of bird island in the middle of the park’s lagoon.
she earned a trip to dizzyland but… i shudda gotten one too just for doing the laundry
oooo! a wisconsin boy! *blinks innocently*
it was called the teen corp instead of job corp
We used to have Canada geese at my grandparents’ house at Cape Cod, on a fresh water lake. The least fun grandchild chore was to swim out to the floating dock in the morning with a heavy broom to clean it off. And sometimes the geese were very aggressive; one time, one bit my little brother, who seemed to get bit by lots of things growing up.
Shoulda been called Mom Corp. That’s some scummy laundry.
tech crew advises we may go down for a short bit (no more than 5 minutes) due to their doing something or other.
Badger is this guy’s nom de guerre too…! ;-)
Teddy,
I lived at the Hagley Museum for years between 16 and marriage in 1975. We had gaggles of geese just shitting up the place every year. My brother and I both worked on the 250 acres of museum, and walked to work with a plastic baseball bat. We never used them, but kept them at attention.
No, not geography, just a resemblance.
*** and we are back
hip hip hooray to the tech crew
My brother says it hurt, but he survived. He also survived being stung by a bee inside his lower lip as he ate buttered corn on the cob. Wow, did he look funny all swelled up.
Yea!
That was seamless!
You know, some sunny summer day, we really need to include old family photographs here. Wouldn’t it be so fun?
Well, I shall bid ya’ll a fond adieu! Aloha Oe!!!
Sounding like a teenager, sorry.
tech crew is teh awesome
aloha ct – but i gotta say, you are missing one hella video coming up for lln
Olympic historian says about Michael Phelps’ apology for “regrettable behavior that demonstrated bad judgment [being photographed using a bong]” that “He probably will take some hit with this.”
Yeah, dude.
And I’m always so grateful — thanks FDL crew.
Dugg, and thanks ratfood.
hahahaha
Hmmm… Sounds interesting, however, I’m calling it a nite…! Back to the literal trenches in the morrow…! *g*
Heck, if the IOC cared about pot, there wouldn’t be a snow board team on the planet that could pass muster.
ES, take care and for accelerating the healing process:
Horsetail (Western herb)
Fo-ti (Chinese herb)
Vitamin C
Calcium
the mold owl?
late late nite upstairs
Monty Pythonish version:
What was on the telly today?
It was a Superb Owl.
Oh, why was it superb?
It killed some Cardinals.
Well, at least George Bush isn’t president any more!
Awww Teddy! Good one! Putt putt-ing things in perspective is a good thing.
Would you now please tackle golf? It’s gotten totally outta hand when 3 out of 4 major networks are tensely whispering about the next dang green.
Meanwhile, as we await further progress…. for the enjoyment of the hard-core birders among us, I present the
Ornate Hawk Eagle
Head south. Rein in yer horses at Ecuador, and look up. Yes. We’ve seen one. Partridges might want to visit with extreme caution and preferably disguised as inedible objects.
Or, if your focus is politics, perhaps one of the Tody Tyrants would be more appropriate.
Where in the east?
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker???
Red-headed Woodpecker???
Keep in mind, plumage might not be exactly as in some books unles they’re very thorough in their inclusion of pictures of all phases including age and sex differences, seasonal changes.
